How to merge external RAW-files with iPhoto library?

Hi,
I have several (Aperture-) modified photos in iPhoto. When I click on any one of those photos in iPhoto (9.5.1) and then click on File -> Reveal in Finder -> Modified File – it reveals the location of a jpg-file inside my iPhoto Library. So far, so good.
However, when I choose File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original File it takes me to an external folder (located in my Home Picture library) and reveals the original RAW-file. I don't know why they are in a folder outside the iPhoto library but I suppose it has something to do with me editing them outside of iPhoto. And this is not a library but just a regular folder containing RAW-files.
How can I merge all my RAW-files so that they are, neat and tidy, all inside my iPhoto library?

I am glad you found the answer useful
What probably happened, was that you imported your original files as referenced. This feature is not recommended in iPhoto, since iPhoto does not support it well - or not at all. I did not want to point that out in the iPhoto forum. In Aperture it is very useful, however, if your library is so large, that it will not fit on one drive. Then you can store the originals on a different drive. Aperture handles referenced images very well.
For some background reading you may want to have a look at this manual page, just in case you may want to use this feature one day:

  • Opening RAW files with iPhoto 06- Nikon D200

    Is there any way to open RAW files with iPhoto 06 ? I have a Nikon D200.

    I'm puzzled - I cannot even open them in preview - it flashes and then says its unsupported. DOes it matterwhat type of RAW you choose?
    I open them fine in Photoshop Elements, would rather load them up in iPhoto for storage though.

  • How do you locate the file where iPhoto library is kept? I moved iPhoto library from hard drive to external dedicated photo drive.

    I am trying to restore some elements of my iPhoto library using time machine.
    Apple instructions call for locating the file where iPhoto library is kept, and tells you where it is on your hard drive. But I've recently moved my iPhoto library to a dedicated external hard drive, and copied my i photo library there. when i click on it, all the photos are there, but it's an iPhoto library, not a file.
    When I go into time machine and click on the date i would like to enter, most of my apps have a circle with a line through it, unaccessible. So: a related question, how would i retrieve a photo file from time machine's previous backup? thank you.

    Thank you!
    I am trying to retrieve photo uploads from my Android phone. When I last updated my OS, most of these vaporized, leaving only thumbnails. I have had two lengthy sessions with Apple phone support, but still haven't solved the problem.
    Apparently I can't go back to July '14 iPhoto in time machine and browse files; i have to copy the entire library.
    Which I just did, taking 2 hours.
    In order to open the iPhoto library from July '14, I had to first update iPhoto.
    When I went into the files, the same problem existed -- photo files gone, only thumbnails there. So now I'm thinking that it's the update that was the problem. This scares me to death, because when we're asked to update, we don't get a menu of preferences to make sure something has been unchecked, like the copy option i had enabled when opening photo files from my phone, which i store in a dropbox folder.
    No one at Apple could tell me why this happened, so I have no idea how to prevent it from happening in the future.
    That's why I'm trying to create better backups...but i can't figure out deja vu, because it won't open and sync the iPhoto library folder -- it wants me to find the file, and i don't know where it is on the external dedicated photo drive.
    I realize this is about six issues, not one. But I'm really appreciative of any help i can get!

    How cam I open RAW files ? I use PSE 12, the Olympus om-d em 10 and windows 7.

    Photoshop Elements 12 should be able to recognise raw files from the OM-D E-M10.
    Check which camera raw you currently have by loading the editor, going to the Help menu and selecting About plug-in -> Camera Raw
    If it not at version 8.5 then go to the Help menu and select Updates

    You can use Aperture to move the raw originals back into the iPhoto/Aperture library, if your iPhoto and Aperture versions are still compatible.
    Open your library in Aperture and select all photos with raw originals in the Browser and use the command "File > Consolidate Originals".
    You will be prompted, if you want to move the files or to copy them. Select "Move files".
    The reason they originals are outside the library is probably caused by the way you imported them. Check your import settings in Aperture.
    In the Import panel the option "Store files" should be set to "In the Aperture Library".
    And in iPhoto the "Advanced" preference for importing should be "Copy items to the iPhoto Library"

  • RAW files with iPhoto

    I shot some pics in RAW for the first time today and have some questions. I imported them into iPhoto and then sent them to Elements using the Edit in External Editor option. They landed nicely in the AdobeRAW conversion pane which I understood alright. I don't know what to do from here when I am satisfied with them or what to expect. I thought I had to change them to jpeg after conversion but when I click Open, it opens as a DNG file in the editor window. Also, if I Save As jpeg it disappears into the folder, leaving the DNG file in the iPhoto window. Can you tell me what I should be doing and what to expect? I somehow thought the DNG file would go off into the Originals folder and leave the jpeg in the iPhoto window. I use iPhoto as my organizational tool. Thanks.

    There are several ways to upload your photos without importing into iPhoto directly. You can use Image Capture to selectively upload your photos to a folder on your Desktop. If your camera mounts on the Desktop as an external drive then you can simply drag and drop in the Finder to get the files on your Mac. If your camera doesn't mount, then you can place the camera card into a USB card reader, which will mount on the Desktop, then drag and drop.
    Once imported into iPhoto, the RAW files are automatically given the keyword "RAW." (Likewise, videos are given a Movie keyword.) All you have to do to locate those files is click the RAW keyword, and they will pop right up. You could also create a Smart Album where "keyword is RAW" to catch them for you. If you like working in Events view then you could separate your RAW photos from your jpegs by creating Events for them.
    You'll have to decide if you want the RAW files in your iPhoto Library. A disadvantage is that your library will contain 2 separate sets of files for photos where you have RAW versions and have imported your edited jpegs. An advantage is you can quickly compare your edited jpegs to the RAW files, and as your editing skills become more proficient you can always edit your RAW files again.
    I don't have a camera that shoots in RAW, so I haven't had to make these decisions for myself. I'll tell you my thoughts based on what I have read and what I have learned from a PSE tutorial. I believe that the advantage is that the RAW file has not been processed by the camera, which allows you to process it on your computer to best suit every photo. For example, my camera may have under-exposed a backlit subject because I forgot to turn on the flash and set the exposure to spot-metered. I can fix it in Photoshop, but because the camera incorrectly processed that jpeg, my options are limited, and my subject will most likely be grainy. Take that same shot in RAW, and those exposure decisions aren't made by the camera. Now I could open it in the RAW workspace of Elements, and I could apply the correct settings to turn that photo into the perfect shot. Of course, that depends on my ability to use the RAW editor to make the best adjustments for that photo. RAW used to be primarily for professional and serious photographers, but as cameras have come down in price more casual photographers choose to shoot in RAW. Aperture handles RAW files better than iPhoto, because it is aimed more at the professional photographer, whereas iPhoto is a consumer-level application.
    One more question along my road to understanding. When I am finished in the RAW converter and Open in Elements I am able to do all the cropping etc. before I Save As. It still has the dng extension at this point so am I still working on the RAW file?
    I don't know for sure. I did play with the RAW workspace in Elements as I worked a tutorial that I bought. I am guessing that what you have after leaving the RAW space and opening in Elements is an Adobe Raw file. That is what I kept seeing. If I saved the file as Adobe Raw then iPhoto 6 was unable to import it.
    Sometimes Photoshop expert [Barbara Brundage|http://discussions.apple.com/profile.jspa?userID=38538] chimes in to answer this type of question here. OR you can ask on the [Adobe Photoshop Elements forums|http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.eeb4f8b>.

  • RAW files with iphoto 08

    Hi.
    I have a canon rebel xsi 450D and I'm using an Imac core duo 3.06 gz.
    I started taking pictures bought in RAW and JPEG formats, when I connect the camera to the computer the raw files appear BLACK, when I try to edit they are still black.
    I've read that my camera model is supported by iphoto.
    When I connect the camera to the computer I can see both files in the camera, when I import the files the raw files appear black in the event
    I would've expected to see the photo when the import was done...
    Anything I'm missing here?
    Thks

    Updating the camera firmware to version 1.0.9 fixed the problem for me. This allowed iPhoto to correctly import both the RAW and JPG files from the camera.
    My camera came with version 1.0.4 installed when it was delivered to me yesterday.
    A workaround for the problem, if for some reason you can't do the firmware update, is to read the files from the SD card using a USB card reader.

    I can't get an answer anywhere on this one so far, including from Apple.
    Can I download RAW files from a Panasonic FZ30 and LX1 using iPhoto 6?
    The list of supported cameras doesn't include either camera but does include the LC1.
    Have any of you had any experience with either of those cameras and iPhoto?
    Thanks.

  • How can i import raw files into iphoto from my Nikon D300?

    Just got a Nikon D300, and it will import jpg and tff, but not raw (nef) files-i prefer iphoto to their software- Nikon says to try talking to apple to find a way to do it- does anyone know any info that can help? I need to decide if I am keeping the camera-from other posts it doesn't look like buying aperture will help either- thanks.

    I would not ditch a camera because of this! If you like the camera, there will always be a way to import Canikon RAW files, though you may need to do some upgrading, and it may take some time for Apple to support a new camera.

    I have a .json file that I need to be included in a template (and also included in projects created from that template).
    The only way I found to do this is to add it as a script. The problem then is that all included "scripts" will be evaluated when the page is loaded, which will fail since it's a json file. External dependencies makes it impossible for me to change the format of the json file...

    Please help me ! Thank you!

    Hi CRay,
    You just need to call the main methods of the 2 classes according to "1" or "2" entered.
    It is better if the "multiplication" and "addition" are declared as methods rather than in main methods.
    Example:-
    public static void Addition()
    Then call
    Addition.addition();
    than
    Addition.main(new String[]{});
    as shown below.
    import javax.swing.JOptionPane; // import the class
    public class Test{
        public static void main(String[] args){
            // read which  operation to perform
            String operation = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Please enter which operation : ");
            if(operation.equals("1")){
                Addition.main(new String[]{});
            else{
                Multiplication5.main(new String[]{});
    }Rose

  • How to use external .tld files with uix

    Hey,
    I have a set of custom .tld files and that i was to use in my UIX pages. I got them to work correctly if I am using jsp files but for some reason it doesn't recognize the tags when they are in uix pages
    I far as I can tell, UIX actually requires xml schema definition of the tags and the just the .tld file is not sufficient.
    My question is, is this the correct conclusion?
    if so is there a easy way to either convert my tld file or create this xml schema file so that my tags will be visible to uix.
    or am I totally off the mark here...

    there is one utility in j2se jar and check the option also
    put that jar file in lib folder of yr application folder

  • When I move a RAW file from IPhoto to my desktop or Photoshop it changes to a jpeg and reduces in size. How can I get the Raw file across?

    When I move a RAW file from IPhoto on my macbook pro to desktop or Photoshop it changes to a jpeg and reduces in size. How can I get the Raw file to move across?

    I create separate folders based on the year and then the actual date of when I take images. You can make those folders anywhere on any hard drive that is connected to your Mac whether internal or external. I also use the Photoshop Photo Downloader that is included with Photoshop/Bridge and it will create the date folder so all I do is create a Year folder.
    Open Bridge or click on the Bridge icon in PS and in the File menu item in Bridge select "Get photos from Camera". It can be a camera connected to your Mac or a memory card from a camera. A window will open and you then select the camera or memory card. Set the location they will be downloaded to, just the folder and you can Browse to a folder that you created, then in the "Create  Subfolders drop down select what date stamp you want to use or or custom name or not to create subfolders at all.
    I've never cared for iPhoto one bit. I tried it but found it way to restrictive. It likes to have full control over how you interact with your images.

    By accident I have some raw-files in iPhoto. I want to open them in PS camera raw. How do i do that?!

    Export them back out: File -> Export, and set the Kind to Original
    Or,
    You can also process your Raw with a 3rd Party app like ACR or Photoshop. But iPhoto does not handle this gracefully and it's a bit of a kludge.
    First off set your preferred app as an external editor in iPhoto:
    Next: In the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, elect to use Raw with your External editor:
    Now when you go to edit the Raw it will be sent to your external editor.
    Now for the kludge:
    You cannot save a Raw. The work you do must be output to a new file, in a new format (jepg, tiff, whatever). However, as the External Editor is making this new file iPhoto has no knowledge of its existence. Therefore you must save it to the desktop and then import it back to iPhoto as a new file.
    This means that you will have your Original Raw and the processed version in iPhoto but they will not be recognised as version and original. iPhoto will see them as two separate shots.
