How to migrate iTunes Library from MacBook to MacMini?

I have a MacMini next to the TV and would like to "migrate" the iTunes library from my MacBook to the MacMini and play it there through my music system. What files need to be moved? or are there better ways? Thanks in advance. Cheers, Veit

I also have somewhat the same question. I will be going from a MS Windows platform to an IMAC. I hope I don't have to reload all of my CDs.

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the whole iTunes folder and all its subfolders and files intact to Home > Music on your computer. It will replace the one that may already be there and anything you have in it will be lost -- you could give the folder a different name just in case, and delete it yourself later.  Unplug the external and start iTunes.

If you need to recover the library from the iPad, there's some third party applications available for recovering content off a device. • How do i transfer my itunes library from macbook pro to my imac

how do i copy or transfer my itunes library from my macbook pro to my new imac, i would like to have the library on both computers

assuming all your media files are in the default location, do this:
reboot the MBP into target disk mode
connect MBP and iMac with a firewire cable
drag the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music - or media - folder) from ~/users/yourname/music on the MBP to ~/users/yourname/music on the iMac.
since an iTunes folder will be present there already, you will be prompted to confirm if you want to replace that with the one you're moving. click ok.

I am also trying to migrate my iTunes Library from my MacBook Pro to my iPad2.
I understand how to sync the device, but I want my iPad to be my "PRIMARY" iTunes source from now on. However, when I go to "preferences / advanced" to "Change iTunes Media Folder Location" the iPad does not show up for selection. How can I otherwise make my iPad my primary archive for iTunes assets?

  • New HDD - how to restore iTunes library from Time Machine

Installed a new HDD in my MacBook Pro, would now like to restore my iTunes library on the computer.
Searched & saw a post about "needing to use the Time Machine interface to restore the entire library".
What is this interface they are referring to and how do I find it?
I open Time Machine in preferences and see there is an "options" button, and you can add items to the restore window ... I'm hoping there is a document somewhere that details if this is the correct place to restore an iTunes library, if so, what files/directories need to be added for restore, etc...

  • How to restore itunes library from a faulty time machine backup?

    Hello,
I just bought a new macbook pro 15inch. I have a time machine backup but I wanted to start fresh so I didn't use the migration assistant to transfer my info. The only thing I want is my iTunes library with the playlists, ratings, artwork etc. But here's the problem... The computer knows that my external hard drive (it's a 1 TB toshiba) has a time machine back up, but it won't access it the usual way. I choose "browse other time machine disks", enter the time machine, then choose the external drive from there, and then I access my stuff. I copied the whole iTunes folder, changed the iTunes media folder location in preferences. Now all my playlists are gone, 400 songs are missing artist info and the library duplicated itself so now I have 12000 songs.
Is there a way for me to have my exact same iTunes library from my other computer?
Any help is appreciated. Thank you

All you need to do is copy the entire iTunes folder to /Music/.
    Then open iTunes.
This is all you need to do. Don't change any iTunes prefs.

  • Migrating iTunes library from a Windows PC to a Mac

    Hi.
If I previously have iTunes on a Windows PC and want to migrate the enitre library to a Mac, how do I do it? I've got all the files transfered over the traditional way - via an external hard drive - but I can't bring the playlists over. I'd hate to have to start creating playlists again.

  • How to Transfer iTunes Library from Windows to Mac

I'm having some trouble moving my iTunes library from my old Windows XP Dell to my new MacBook Pro. I used my iPod video on the Dell, but now that I have a Mac, I want all my songs to be moved over there. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to do this. I looked at the Apple Support pages, but none of them address this particular issue. Can someone guide me on how to do transfer my library?
    Thanks!

the ipod now showing up in my computer or wherever is probably because the ipod is not set for disk use. go to the ipod settings in itunes and fink the check box where it says "enable disk use" this should make the ipod show up. now you should be able to put the songs onto the ipod as a music file to transfer them. other methods of transfer could be an external hard drive, a travel drive, a usb cable, or the most convenient but frustrating way is to open the ipod folder in my computer... and nvm i cant remember how to do it and dont have a working ipod at the moment to find out. ill post that solution later. i will say it involves opening the folder where the music is saved on the ipod, copying them onto the computer and renaming every single file. this is convienient only because it doesnt require modification or movement of any songs to the ipod because it uses the ones on there. all the files renamed with random letters and numbers when put on the ipod so youll have to reorganize all songs

  • How to import itunes library from a mac book pro to a new mac air?

How do I go about accessing my itunes library from a new mac air?
CD's and downloads were originally used to create my library on a mac book pro. Can I now access this on my new mac air?

If there is space on the Air, you can use Migration Assistant to transfer the data. (Go into Applications/Utilities, and run Migration Assistant from there - it will tell you what options you have for data transfer). If you wish to keep both laptops, you might look at using iTunes Match, which will make all your music available on the Air but not necessarily download it.

  • How to move iTunes library from Mac to external HD

I have my wifes itunes music on a macbook pro, and my itunes music is on an old Desktop G4. I have just purchased a Lacie 1TB external hard drive and would like to move both sets of music onto this external hard drive, and delete the music from the Macbook pro.
Does anyone have any information on exactly how to do this without causing any problems?
    Many thanks, Ian

Thank you. I am guessing that I can then either import the music on the DVD's from one library onto the external hard drive with music from another library, and it will consolidate into one big library?
i should think so. the trick is to have iTunes authorized to the iTunes account(s) with which you and your wife purchased content. i'm guessing you have separate accounts ?
I have basically copied the iTunes library from the macbook pro onto the external hard drive. If I do the same with the G4 iTunes library, will they sync together in one complete single library?
you will have to to add the media files from the G4 library to the iTunes library that is now pointed to the external drive or iTunes won't know.
Would it be easier to import the music from the G4 library that is now backed up on DVD's onto the external hard drive?
i would do it like this:
connect G4 and MBP via firewire cable. start the G4 in target disk mode. in iTunes (pointing to the external drive and authorized to play purchased content from both accounts), choose +add to library+ from the file menu and navigate to the *iTunes music* folder on the G4.
my guess is you can also pop in the DVD but i haven't done it myself (don't trust DVDs), especially importing media files purchased with a different account, so i wouldn't be happy to give advice here.

  • Migrating iTunes library from external hard drive to new laptop

Hi there, I am wondering if anyone can help me please? I am a complete newbie to this forum thing, I am just getting into this cosmic sharing world but find myself utterly frustrated with iTunes and my new laptop - with little help on the Support pages, so i am venturing into the unkown and seeking help from anyone out there.........slightly scary for me, this really is my first post on a forum - so be gentle with me :0)
On my old steam driven laptop I had to move my iTunes library to an external hard drive, my 250MB hard drive just wasn't enough (I know pathetic wasn't it). All ok there and I have been using it no problem. I have now upgraded (finally!!) to a new wonderful laptop (with webcam and all sorts!)but I am at the end of my tether trying to get my iTunes library from my external hard drive to appear in the Library on the laptop. boo hoo.
I have tried changing the file location in the Advance section of preferences, i have tried choosing the library after holding down the shift key on start up (you see not a complete numpty). They all appear to work as i don't get any error messages, but the songs just don't appear in the library. Am i being a complete numb nuts here? what am i missing?
If anyone can help i would be really grateful as this is spoiling the euphoric feeling i have of my lovely new laptop!
    cheers Latte

Thank Chris I have just done that. How do I now get them in to Itunes ?
If you simply copy the iTUnes folder to /Music/ and launch iTUnes, everythign will be there. No need to import anything.
This will work the same with iPhoto.
Simply copy the Photo library to /Pictures/ folder and launch iPhoto.
