How to mirror imac with 1st gen apple tv

I have a new iMac and a first generation Apple TV. Imac is upstairs and Apple TV is downstairs connected by ethernet. PLaying media through iTunes is fine but how can I mirror my iMac? For example, I want to be able to watch streamed video from the internet on the TV rather than the iMac.

Unfortunately, the Apple TV 1 doesn't support AirPlay.

ITunes 12.1 not syncing TV Shows with 1st Gen Apple TV

I recently purchased season 2 of House of Cards via iTunes on my Mac. My 1st generation Apple TV and my 12.1 Version of iTunes syncs my music, pictures, movies, but not the TV shows. The setting are set to "Sync All Unwatched Shows". I reset my Apple TV to "Factory Settings" and reconfiged everything. Everything syncs except the TV Shows. I only have 2 Apple TV errors for 1080 movies that I know will not play on my Apple TV. I have download many TV Shows in the past and have had no problems syncing. This occurred since I upgraded to iTunes V12.1. I was traveling for 2 months and playing the TV shows directly from my MacBook Pro via HDMI cable. I updated iTunes in January and just returned home. This is the first time I tried to sync with iTunes 12.1 and Apple TV.

Yes, fix needed here or I'll have to start considering MS and Apple of the same breed. Software that does things for you that you don't want it to do is Microsofts design that caused me to move to Apple long ago, and releasing software that "Just doesn't work" isn't very Appley... Or is it now? Hmmm... Maps anyone?
That aside, my related problem is with the "Unwatched" sorting of TV shows which is very oddly messed up, not consistantly all have changed in one direction or another and they are oddly changing in the wrong direction in some cases without my touching the manual (Rightclick) setting.
With this issue, a major convenience of Apple TV and other devices is turned into an inconvenience.
Please fix.

New MacBook Pro cannot sync with 1st gen Apple TV

Hello,
just bought a new MacBook Pro and have linked it to my 1st generation Apple TV (160GB) but it will not sync.
I keep getting this error message (something about firewall blocking port 3689) but I don't have the firewall on. The support on the apple website doesn't really offer any other resolutions apart from changing the firewall to allow the connection but mine is already deactivated anyway.

Same problem here. Update hasn't helped. Both iPhone and iPad quite happily continue to remote control AppleTV. iTunes even allows airstreaming to the AppleTV. However it NEVER appears as a device in iTunes, whether or not I use the iPhone/iPad plugged in trick. Nor have recent updates helped.
AppleTV used to work fine with previous macbook from which I transferred all user info etc). I know Apple wants us to think of such devices as "stream targets" but I prefer to have the music collection on the AppleTV. Very frustrating waste of time that it doesn't work as it should.

How to read ebooks with 1st-gen iPad?

New owner of a 1st-gen iPad (gift from someone upgrading), who wiped her iPad clean before she gave it over.
I have some eBooks in my iTunes Library, but I can't seem to find a way to read them on the iPad. iTunes tells me I have to have iBooks, which requires iOS 7. Since the 1st-gen won't update past iOS 5.1.1, Kindle won't download below iOS 6, and Nook won't seem to read books already in the Library....
Oh, and how can I save PDFs onto this thing?

You can download both iBooks and Kindle (and other book readers) to iTunes on your computer. Once downloaded open the Purchased section in the App Store on the iPad and tap to download the apps. You will be prompted to download a compatible version.

Anyone had issues with iTunes 11.0.4 like me? Keep getting initial (post upgrade) tutorial screen when going into iTune and loss of sync with 1st Gen Apple TV (infuriating as have to re-connect and re-sync everything!!!)

Following upgrade to iTunes 11.0.4 I have had intermittent but numerous (at least 10 incidents) where I go into iTunes and I am presented again with the initial (post upgrade) registration/tutorial screen....as if I have just upgraded iTunes!
This is very frustrating as apart from having to keep re-setting my preferences (e.g. display side bar and menu bar), iTunes no longer recognises my Apple TV (1st generation) as a device. If I check on my Apple TV under 'Computers' my iTunes library is displayed but 'grayed out' indicating the Apple TV can no longer 'see' my iTunes Library. To resolve, I then have to disconnect the Apple TV from my iTunes Library then reconnect again (which works) but ou've guesses it...al the music and movies I have synced across to Apple TV needs to be synced across again....which takes time as we know.
I have re-installed (and re-downloaded) iTunes twice and ruled out any connectivity issues. I suspect some form of bug with iTunes.
Anyone else experienced this and any tips to fix this?

Yes stupid itunes 11.0.4 does not sync to my Apple TV. I tried resetting it and no luck.

How do I get Faces in iPhoto to appear on my 2ed gen Apple TV. The appear on my 1st gen Apple TV with Photos and Events.

How do I sync Faces in iphoto to iTunes and then to my 2ed gen Apple TV so I can show Events,Photos or Faces on my TV? On another TV which I have connected a 1st gen Apple TV all three appear, so some how the 1st gen is sync'ing with itunes but not so with the 2ed gen Apple TV as I ony get Events and Photos on the TV screen.

You can use Remote app on an iOS device, however it needs to have ben configured first and that would entail using an Apple Remote.
If you have lost or do not have an Apple remote the new silver remote works with all units.
Some 3rd party programmable remotes may also have codes to use with other devices like AppleTV.

I have a number of purchased tv programs from iTunes. I click "check for downloads" on a 1st gen apple tv but it doesn't find any of these programs.

Purchased content is re-downloadable from a special purchased section which is not available on the first generation Apple TV. The "Check for downloads" option is only for downloading purchases that have been made on the Apple TV itself.

I have a house guest that I have set up a separate login account for on my Mac. I have already setup my iTunes library so they have access to it, but no purchase rights, while on the machine. I have 2 1st Gen Apple TVs associated with my library. How can I enable the apple tvs so he can watch movies or listen to music from his side of the Mac?

My Apple TV and my iTunes got along just fine until I downloaded the latest version of iTunes. Now Edit > Preferences > Apple TV no longer exists so it's hard to check "Look for Apple TVs". The Apple TV device doesn't show up in iTunes.
I, too, am afraid I'm going to lose stuff I bought with Apple TV that hasn't been synced with my iTunes library.

Is iTunes 11 compatible with 1st generation Apple TV?

I just did the update for iTunes. This new version (11) doesn't seem to be compatible with my 1st gen Apple TV. It only shows a sync for photos but not music. Even the photo sync doesn't seem to work.

Same problem here. Some people are finding no problems while others this same problem. When I right click on the Apple TV in the sidebar, the only options are "Turn Off Streaming" and "Copy Serial Number". No sync option. The movies I had on my Apple TV before are still there from iTunes 10 but I can't add or delete any as of now. Maybe I'll try restarting the Apple TV.

Music Gone from 1st Gen Apple TV after iTunes upgrade to 10.1.1 (4)

I use a 1st Gen Apple TV to store and play all my music throughout my home. It's perfect for that because I don't have to stream from my computer (as with 2nd Gen Apple TV) and can control the music from all over the house from the Remote App on my iPad and iPhone. After I upgraded to iTunes 10.1.1 this week I synced my Apple TV with my computer to add some new music to it from iTunes. All of my music promptly disappeared from my Apple TV. It may have still been there, but didn't show in iTunes on my computer or on my iPad or iPhone remote apps.
My first thought was that I might have to do a restore on the Apple TV and then re-sync with my computer's iTunes. Before doing that, however, I simply re-synced all of my music to the Apple TV from my computer. It worked and now all of the music is available again.

let it do it's restart and clear synced data
set it up to link with the same computer once more
and let it sync the data once more
haven't have issues since
but described the solution to many in this forum who had the same issue

I was actually wondering about iTunes updates, not Apple TV. The problem is that iTunes does not show tabs for syncing my 1st Gen. Apple TV. I wonder if the problem is in iTunes.
My Apple TV does still remember music and photos that were previously synced, but I can't re-sync to add new music and photos.
I am worried that if I unlink and re-sync, I won't be able to get anything back, and will be limited only to streaming.
Thoughts?

1st gen apple tv.

I have a 1st gen apple tv. I have always and only streamed from my 1T TC. What has heppened is: it follows menus to the selected movie and when i select the movie, the 1st 1 second of video plays and then freezes. The audio continues for i don't know how long because i stop it. I have tried to sync a movie to it (wirelessly) and it tells me i have to open port 336(?)
1. Anyone know how i can fix the streaming? or how to open a port so i can try syncing...
I'd rather stream as i have 100's of movies to stream

Applications>Utilities>Terminal
sudo ipfw add allow ip from 336 to 336
sudo reboot
If this does not work, try connecting the Apple TV to the Time Capsule via ethernet.
WARNING
Before entering sudo reboot, save any open files. You will lose all changes during the reboot.
You will need an admin password. The characters will not show when entering the password.
Also, you could go to Settings>Computers>Your Library.
Then go to Settings>Computers>Add iTunes Library. A code will be displayed. In iTunes, go to iTunes>Prefrences>Apple TV>Remove.
After that, restart iTunes. Your Apple TV should appear under Devices. Select it and enter the code.
If that doesn't work, I don't know what will.

Looks like Apple sent out a Bad Easter Egg for us 1st gen'rs, but they appear to be working on it. At the very least they are aware of the issue. I doubt it was deliberate as there was no official notice of discontinuation of support.
