How to monitor ASM and RAC

Hi, bodies:
Our initial goal is to integrate the monitoring into the EMS system which at this point would require the monitoring of a specific service. What service is running with ASM? What services would we monitor for RAC?
thanks a lot.

Do not understand your question. What do you imply by "a specific service"?
There are numerous "layers" to a RAC. The voting disk for the CRS daemons. If this is OCFS, then there is the ocfs kernel module underneath this and the mount that needs to be performed. Then there is the ASM instance. The RAC instance. Per node.
Each RAC instance have register different services that are "published" via the the listener. Oh yeah - a listener service on each node.
There is also the Interconnect that can be monitored. Never mind the o/s of each node ito resource utilisation (memory, CPU and network).
Nor should we forget that ASM itself runs on top of some shared storage mechanism (e.g. SAN drivers) which also can be monitored.
So to determine WHAT you want to monitor, you first need to know WHY you want to monitor.
What is the purpose? The business goal or requirement that you're trying to achieve?
And no - performance management is not drawing a bunch of pretty graphs with dips and spikes and not having the faintest clue what that is saying.

  • Oracle 10g ASM and RAC configuration

    Hi all,
I want to ask to everybody something about Oracle 10g RAC and ASm configuration. We plan to migrate to Oracle 10g from 9i, and we will begin configuring oracle but we have to decide which configuration are the best.
    Our materials are bellow:
    Hardware: RP 3440 (HP)
    OS : HPUX 11i Ver 1
Storage: EVA 4000 (eva disk group)
    The problem is:
Our supplier recommand us to use HP serviguard + HP serviceguard extension for RAC+ RAc and Raw device as configuration.
But we want to use Oracekl Clusterware + RAC + ASM
My question is if anybody know what is the best configuration, we want to use ASm.
    Can HP serviguard use ASM.
Some documentations or link explain oracle RAC and ASM configuration will be appreciate.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,
I want to use RAC for clustering. My shared disk is a NetApp Filer FS250 that can only be mounted throught NFS. RAW devices have to be excluded, alsi OCFS i think works similar to raw devices and need to see phisical disk to create partition. ASM instead can work on an NFS mount?

  • How to monitor traffic and associations per AP with WCS?

    Hi,
is there a way to get traffic and client access/associations data with WCS for each AP of a centrally managed WLAN?
    I manage a campus WLAN with a 4402 WLC (software version 6.0.188.0) and a WCS version 6.0.170.0 .
WCS provides me detailed information on a client basis: I'm able to know the association history of each client currently
connected, both which AP the client has connected to, and how much traffic the client has generated/received for each connection.
I hadn't find a way to get the same information on an AP basis. Namely, which clients have been connected, and how much traffic
has been transmitted per time slot.
I suppose this is just a matter of making a different query to the WCS database, since the data are the same used for providing
the information on the client association and traffic history. Though, I haven't find a way on WCS to get this information.
Thanks a lot in advance for any help, cheers,

  • How to monitor / shutdown processes and users?

    Hi,
As you can see in my previous post i'm totally new to Arch and fairly new to Linux...
Here's one thing that bothers me: I don't know how to keep track of all running processes (and end them if needed... I guess you need to 'kill' them but you first need to know their name, right...) and logged on users (even though that's only me, heh...)
How can you do that in Linux? (something like task manager or another admin tool - or a command line version)
Another thing... I think a wiki page 'securing the default Arch install' would be helpful...
(flame me if there already is one, but I didn't find it )
    greetings,

(I think Arch is going to be the one Linux distro to break the record of 1 month installation on my pc... woohoo!!!)

I really don't know how that ended up in my post especially because I use semicolon, bracket instead of colon, wink, colon for my smiley...
but as relates to securing Arch, of course I mean against network based attacks. The way you would try to secure Windows. I know how to own windows computers when I have physical access to them, and I guess it's the same thing with Linux pc's... but I want to feel secure that nobody from the internet is going to appropriate my box for illegal or other things, on those few occasions that i'm not behind a router/firewall (which I am not sure I trust either... it's a Linksys wireless/wired router with integrated firewall capability. How secure is that? I don't know!)
Is there no way to deny all other pc's access to this pc? It's a laptop, not a server, so nobody has business accessing it remotely anyway... Actually, this is one of the reasons I had an eye on openBSD secure as hell...
EDIT: since we're at it... another thing I don't find is how I can find out at what speed my cpu is running... is it going down to 600 MHz when Idle or isn't it? etc... That stuff is pretty easy to see in windows... must be feasible at least in Linux hey

  • ASM and DB on different machine

    Hi,
Have one question, we are given 2 VM's on which ASM and Oracle DB is installed. We are asked to start both machine in sequence, after starting Machine-1 we need to start Machine-2 then only DB (orcl) on Machine-2 can be opened.
If we miss sequence it gives does not come up and gives error like:
    SQL> startup;
ORA-01078: failure in processing system parameters
ORA-01565: error in identifying file '+DATA/orcl/spfileorcl.ora'
    ORA-17503: ksfdopn:2 Failed to open file +DATA/orcl/spfileorcl.ora
ORA-29701: unable to connect to Cluster Synchronization Service
The initorcl.ora on Machine-2 has following entry:
    SPFILE='+DATA/orcl/spfileorcl.ora'
Can someone please suggest how this two machines would be configured, what entries on Machine-2 are pointing to ASM instance on Machine-1.
    Please suggest..

    Where can I see that?
Regards! What is your database & ASM version?
    Are you using Grid?
My first post explanation is specific to any ASM & RDBMS instance on server.
Describe more how these two servers configured.
    you can check by
    $crsctl check cssd
Or let's say how can we tell CSS service where is ASM instance located..It will be handled by CSSD process.
    read this manual http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/asm-10gr2-bestpractices.pdf
Since CSS provides cluster management and node monitor management, it inherently monitors ASM and
its shared storage components (disks and diskgroups). Upon startup, ASM will register itself and all
diskgroups it has mounted, with CSS. This allows CSS across all RAC nodes to keep diskgroup metadata
in-sync. Any new diskgroups that are created are also dynamically registered and broadcasted to other
    nodes in the cluster.
As with the database, internode communication is used to synchronize activities in ASM instances. CSS is
used to heartbeat the health of the ASM instances. ASM internode messages are initiated by structural
changes that require synchronization; e.g. adding a disk. Thus, ASM uses the same integrated lock
management infrastructure that is used by the database for efficient synchronization.

  • How to monitor idoc in PI

    Hi Gurus,
how to monitor idoc and how many IDOC s come to in XI /PI ?
    Regards
    sreeni

    Hi Sreeni,
    How to monitor the idocs:
To monitor the idocs we have many transactions in R/3
we02: Gives the list of idocs based on your selection criteria
we05: Gives the list of idocs based on your selection criteria
BD87: List of idocs which are ready to be sent out of R3
SM58: If the idocs are sent out of R3 but still in the TRFC queue
    Coming to XI/PI:
You can check the idoc in trnsaction IDX5 which is the idoc mionitoring tool.
How to check the count of idocs in XI/PI:
The direction of the IDOCs which are sent out of R3 is always 1. Hence if you can go to transaction we02 and give the appropriate selection parameters and select direction as 1 you would get all the IDOCs sent out of R3 to respective receivers.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to create redlog and control file at ASM in linux RAC

    Hi Experts,
I will to maintance a oracle 10g database at ASM as RAC iin linux red hat.
i am a new person with some question.
nornally speaking, oracle recommadition for oracle 10g database as
create 3 copy fills for control file
create at least 2 redo log with mirror files in system.
    However, I checked find
redlog file is at FRA place +FLSdisk1 and no mirror
control file is at FRA place--+FLSDISK1/
    datebase file at ‘+DATA1/
There are no mirror for relog.
Go to EM, I also could not find place to enter file name.
We use ASM to hold database to support RAC.
Do i need to create redlog file as
    ALTER DATABASE ADD LOGFILE GROUP 1 ('+FLSdisk1/sale/onlinelog/REDO01.LOG','+FLSdisk1/sale/onlinelog/REDO01_mirror.LOG') SIZE 1000M reuse;
my boss told me that ASM is reliable.
Do you need to creat more directory to arrange redlog and control files in ASM for RAC system?
FRA is a good place to store control file and redlog file ?
    Thanks
    JIM
    Edited by: user589812 on Jul 3, 2009 3:03 PM

ASM is reliable but a smart DBA is very careful. If ASM is doing mirroring this is like RAID doing mirroring. What happens if you accidentally delete one copy ... the other one disappears instantly. Not a good idea.
With respect to redo logs you need a minimum of three groups, two members, and one thread per instance. So a 2 node cluster should, at a minimum have 12 physical files.
Not mirroring the redo logs, assuming multiple members, is not as critical.

    Sri,
This could be done multiple ways. Simplest for you is to use DBCA:

  • How to monitor OSD TS failure and get alert or report?

How to monitor OSD TS failure and get some alert or generate an report?
    We have SCCM 2012 R2 CU1 with MDT 2013.
I have checked the OSD reports in SCCM and everyone is emty, where do SCCM get data to the what to activate?
(I thinking of "Task Sequence - Deployment Status" reports)
I am not sure people read report manually or lock at the MDT monitor view. So best I think that generate an email or incident in Service Manager when an TS fails.
We do have SCOM, SCSM, SCO.
Is there anyone that can point what way or what option I have?
    /SaiTech

Specifically you could use this Status Message Query syntax to monitor your Task Sequences for errors:
    select stat.*, ins.*, att1.*, att1.AttributeTime from SMS_StatusMessage as stat left join SMS_StatMsgInsStrings as ins on stat.RecordID = ins.RecordID left join SMS_StatMsgAttributes as att1 on stat.RecordID = att1.RecordID inner join SMS_StatMsgAttributes
    as att2 on stat.RecordID = att2.RecordID where att2.AttributeID = 401 and att2.AttributeValue = "DOJ200A1" and stat.SiteCode = "DOJ" and att2.AttributeTime >= ##PRM:SMS_StatMsgAttributes.AttributeTime## order by att1.AttributeTime desc
Just replace DOJ200A1 with the Deployment ID of your Task Sequence and DOJ with your SiteCode.
If you want to generate an alert if the TS fails then you could run a script that calls a utility (or similar) which sends a pre-configured email to a specified address (as an alternative to Torten's response). This could be placed in the built in error
logging section of the SCCM integrated MDT Task Sequence when it fails which I assume you are using (right at the bottom, called Gather Logs and StateStore on failure).
There are heaps of ways of generating an email from a TS and controlling error logging just do a search - as you have Service Manager you could even use your instance of Orchestrator and call a run book in your TS which does the email?

  • In 26.0, how do I put Download, Bookmarks, History, and Tags into separate windows? I have multi-monitor system and place these different windows . . .

    Hello,
I recently, decided to upgrade from 19.0b to the current (26.0) version, as "Tab Utilities" now supports 26, but am finding one of the visual changes counter productive. My two workstations have multiple monitors. One has 2 monitors (2560x1600) and the other one has 4 monitors (2560x1600). On both workstations, I'll place the various Firefox informational windows off the "main monitor" (the one directly in front of me). This way they're available to me at a glance.
(Side note: I refer to my monitors, as 2L, 1 2R and the 4th as "auxiliary.") The one thing I miss most is being able size these Firefox windows independently and in different positions.
I mean I'm used to seeing "Download" on monitor 2R on the right side (1/8 of screen) behind Microsoft Process Explorer's System Information. While the History will be on monitor 2L on the right side at 1/4 of the screen). I'm used to glancing out my right eye at the downloads and when needing something from the past, it's right next to the main monitor #1. This way I can access history quickly.
I can see why a developer (with one monitor say 1920 x 1080) would love seeing one window, but why can't Firefox support both single and multiple monitor users at the same?
Anyway, is there a way to get 26.0 to place at least "Download" and "History" in separate sizable windows?
(I'm not jumping up and down to go back to 19.0b or to try 25, but would like to stay current.)

    Hello,
Thank you for your very quick reply. Before I read your reply completely, let me see if I can answer your first concern.
    > Maybe I am missing your point.
Maybe I'm not making the point properly. Honestly, I never explained the issue from how it is directly affecting me.
OK, let's do a real world example of what I'm seeing on my two monitor system. I'll first describe what I experienced with 19.0b and earlier, which is IMHO how it should work in 26 and beyond ('''''as an option'''''). Next, I'll review what I'm seeing in 26.0. Hopefully this will help you understand what changed, from a practical perspective.
In 19.0b (and how I like working) for a multiple monitor system:
On the main monitor, I'm running Firefox. It is 1920 x 1080 and is in the lower right hand corner.
On the the monitor to my right (2R), I have the Download Manager list of downloading and downloaded file. It is in the upper right hand corner and takes up about 300 x 1500 pixels.
For a two monitor system, I have the History List running beside Firefox in the lower right hand corner and it is 600 x 1080.
For a three (plus) monitor system, I have the History List running on my left (2L) monitor. It is in the lower right hand corner and is 600 x 1080 pixels big.
For 26.0: I'm seeing the following:
On the main monitor, I'm running Firefox. It is 1920 x 1080 and is in the lower right hand corner. (This is the SAME as with 19.0b.)
When I start the Download Manager and have it set up as I do for 19.0b, it looks OK. It is on monitor 2R and is 450 x 1500 pixels (because of the new navigation side bar).
'''''The problem STARTS NOW (when I start the History List).'''''
When starting the History List, it replaces the Download Manger on the 2R monitor in the 450 x 1500 pixel window. This doesn't work for me because:
    1) It is too far away to see. (NOTE: I put it on the 2L monitor in the lower right hand corner. so I can see it easier for the 3+ monitor. In the case of the 2 monitor, I put it beside Firefox again to see it easier.)
Some might ask, but the Download Manager is on the 2R and right side, why can't the History List be there too? Good question, and I can only reply saying:
    1) Personal choice.
    2) The Download Manager is NOT as busy as the History List and I find it easy to read.
    3) The History List is a lot busier and the font size looks to be smaller (might be the same, but it looks smaller to my eyes). I need it closer to me / Firefox.
What I'm saying is this . . . The Download Manager and History List have <ul>''valid reasons to be visible to the user at the same time''.</ul> They also need to be independent of one another for (at least) size and location.
Combining them together is OK for some people, but NOT for everyone. Please make it an option to combine (as in 26) and separate (25 and earlier).
I'm not sure this is the best way to put it, but here goes. Allow users to collapse or expand these various lists by using multiple windows. One window is the collapse view and multiple independent windows is the expand view.
I'll read and comment on the rest of your reply, soon. Thanks for allowing me hopefully to explain my point in a better manner. :-)

Yesterday we had one of the ASM instance on our 10-node cluster hang with a latch "ASM file allocation latch". Oracle support has stated we are hitting a bug with is fixed in the latest PSU.
What I am trying to understand is how a latch on one ASM instance caused all 10 ASM instances to hang?
Oracle Supports explanation still does not answer how all 10 ASM instance were affected other then the faulty code that the patch fixes. Bellow is info out of the SAR.
    Data Guard Site:
    ================
ARC1 PID 21508 reports ORA-240 'control file enqueue held for more than 120 seconds' at Thu Oct 28 11:35:54 2010. This message means ARC1 PID 21508 was holding the enqueue past the maximum tine limit of 120 seconds.
Next ARC0 PID 17398 reports ORA-16146: 'control file enqueue unavailable' at Thu Oct 28 11:36:52 2010. This means ARC0 PID 17398 tried to access the controlfile and it could get the lock.
    ARC1 PID 21508 is then killed at Thu Oct 28 11:49:57 2010.
Killing enqueue blocker (pid=21508) on resource CF-00000000-00000000 by (pid=23078) by killing session 5.3
We see that RSM has been restarted by Broker. This matches to the alert.log and messages showing RSM being restarted several time. i.e. RSM0 started with pid=84, OS id=27915
Since this started happening around 11:14, the problem may have really started then instead of w/ the CF enqueue block.
The primary appears to be shipping redo to the standby using asynchronous mode. Unless there was a gap, I do no know if ARC1 should have been doing any remote network I/O. Because a log switch to thread 1 sequence 5235 had just happened at 11:33am, I suspect it was a local disk I/O that was started at least. The ORA-240 is reported at 11:35, exactly 120 sec (or 2min) from this log switch. Notice also the entry to show the log thread 1 sequence 5234 was registered to the controlfile didn't happen yet.
    ASM Side:
    ============
From the systemstate dump on ASM, multiple processes are waiting on 'ASM file allocation latch' and we are kind of stuck on stack:
    ksedsts()+461<-ksdxfstk()+32<-ksdxcb()+1782<-sspuser()+112<-0000003218E0C5B0<-kfuhInsert()+175<-kffilCreate()+601<-kfnsUFG()+3691<-kfnsBackground()+4382<-kfnDispatch()+527<-opiodr()+1149<-ttcpip()+1251<-opitsk()+1633<-opiino()+958<-opiodr()+1149<-opidrv()+570<-sou2o()+103<-opimai_real()+133<-ssthrdmain()+214<-main()+201<-__libc_start_main()+219
This caused the hang on the ASM side and hence ASM was not responding to the database. The CF Enqueue issue on the database was a side effect of this.
This is a direct <BUG:9232266> which is a duplicate of <BUG:8974548>

    Thanks Murali,
I was little reluctent to open a tar since my experince says that its better to troubleshoot the issue yourself instead of spending time with the Oracle support :)
Well, I got some more information on this : the sql for the process id of ASM instance is :
    Alter Diskgroup mount all;
It looks like it is unable to mount the diskgroup and get hunged at that point , is it due to the new disk added to the system or do we missed something after adding the new disk.
Also, the ASM process can not be killed from unix box while the ASM is down.
Will appreciate your time if we can move in any directions from here ..
    Thanks ,
