How to monitor my shared network connection

Hi,
I have a mac mini server which I'm using (among other things) to share my internet network connection (from the ethernet adapter) with other wireless clients through the wireless adapter. This works fine.
My question is: how do I monitor how many clients are attached to the wireless network?
Thanks!

The answer to your question also depends on whether you want to monitor which of your friends etc. is online, or whether you want to monitor for malicious users/attackers.
In the first case the DHCP client list ist quite ok, in the second case it wouldn't help you: An attacker would probably not query your DHCP server, he would just listen to some traffic and could then (a) choose a seemingly free IP from the network, (b) hijack an existing IP and MAC address (or of course (c) decide to use the DHCP server after all).
You can use tools like TCPDUMP, ETHEREAL or KISMAC to scan the traffic on your WLAN, but since an attacker that has cracked the WEP key could change his MAC address to that of one of the other computers, intrusion detection is difficult. With respect to protection the best advice probably is the one about using more secure methods than WEP...

  • How to deal with a shared network connection when installing 10 EX

I am in the process of setting up a Virtual PC XP environment on my Vista Business machine to load Oracle EX in the virtual environment. I am having an issue of receiving a shared network connection with my broadband wireless card within the virtual XP SP3 environment, which Internet access is required for the Oracle EX installation. I checked out a couple tech sites and could not find a solution. I might have to get an Internet access at home from TWC.
How to resolve this conflict? Thanks.

I am not sure how +"I am having an issue of receiving a shared network connection with my broadband wireless card within the virtual XP SP3 environment"+ can be resolved on an Oracle forum? There are probalby Windows experts on the forum but I would personally aim for a Windows forum.
You may want to double check if Oracle XE is even running in a Virtual PC environment before starting this exercise.

  • Problems with internet sharing/network connection/ethernet and XBOX 360

So basically I have a sent my Mac Book Pro 13" (Snow Leopard) away to be fixed, and in return I got a loan Mac Book Pro 15" (Lion). In the two weeks my Mac book was away getting fixed I purchased an XBOX 360, because of my location I am unable to use wireless on my XBOX, so instead I connect the loan Mac Book to the XBOX 360 via network cable.
This worked fine and I could now connect to XBOX Live and be on the Mac Book at the same time.
So today my Mac Book (13") is returned, I connect everything up exactly the same also changing the settings on internet sharing making sure that it can be used to send the connection to other devices via ethernet.
    But it just wont connect.
The XBOX doesnt find the connection like it did before, and it also doesnt register on the MAC Book either.
I've tried different cables, the same cable I used where it worked before.
I've tried turning of Virus protection.
Both still at both ends it is not registering a connection, I have used this Mac Book before through a network cable so I dont think there is a problem there, to my knowledge everything is the same as I did on the other Mac Book but this one does work.
Have you any advice or tips on how to get this to work?
    Thanks for your time.

What I did to get my network running again (although I still haven't found out why DHCP has stopped working):
    1. Open the Control Panel of the computer that's trying to connect to the network (not the computer sharing the internet connection)
    2. Go to 'Network' panel, and select the AirPort connection
    3. Under the 'TCP/IP' tab, change 'Configure IPv4' pull-down menu from 'Using DHCP' to 'Manually'.
    4. Enter an IP address between 10.0.2.2 and 10.0.2.256 (I randomly chose 10.0.2.40), a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0, and enter 10.0.2.1 in the Router box.
    5. Click "Apply now"
The computer should now be connected to the network, and able to access the internet. If not, you may need to manually enter a DNS server - put '4.2.2.1' (or an IP for a DNS server provided by your ISP) into the 'DNS Servers' box.
You need to do that process for each computer you're trying to connect to the shared network, making sure you enter a different IP Address for each.

  • How do i maintain a network connection between 2 computers

From time to time I can share my network connection between my iMac and my MacBook Air but frequently the connection is lost. How do I reconnect once the connection is lost?
Is the only choice to restart each computer?
Is it necessary that both computers remain active (not go into sleep mode)?
    Any help?

If you are really sure that you want to map a network drive using Labview then the easiest way to achieve it is probably to use the System Exec.vi.
    Use the NET USE command
    e.g.
    NET USE K: \\server\sharename password /USER:mydomain\username
    Command syntax
    "NET USE
    [devicename | *] [\\computername\sharename[\volume] [password | *]]
            [/USER:[domainname\]username]
            [/USER:[dotted domain name\]username]
            [/USER:[username@dotted domain name]
            [/SMARTCARD]
            [/SAVECRED]
            [[/DELETE] | [/PERSISTENT:{YES | NO}]]
    NET USE {devicename | *} [password | *] /HOME
    NET USE [/PERSISTENT:{YES | NO}]"
Using this command you can then map a network drive using a username and password of your choice to map a drive as you require.
Note also that the user profile used to access the share can be an alternate to the local account (I am thinking domain / cross domain usage here) which is also very handy as you can use, for example, an increased security level for your LabVIEW accessing account!

  • Home Sharing/Network Connections

I am immensely frustrated with this new Apple TV. The streaming feature is unreliable. The network connectivity also is unreliable. I have good wifi signal, and a very fast connection. All of my wireless devices connect just fine. I've opened the firewall channels on my router (which, by the way, required more technical knowledge than any end-user product should). I've updated the software, rebooted, reset, rebooted again, turned on and off home sharing, and rebooted again. It still does not work reliably. It will for a while, then it stops. Short of opening all incoming connections in my firewall (which seems stupid) or running ethernet cable through my walls to see if that does it, I'm fresh out of ideas. My old Apple TV never had these problems. Ever. If it did, it was masked by everything being stored locally and not relying on complicated network settings or requiring your computer to be awake to access music. Boo. If it doesn't get remedied, I'm going with the competition.

If possible... connect the ATV2 to your router via ethernet and see if any of the issues still exist. If all of your problems are wireless related they should go away when you do this.
Go back to wireless after that but try different locations for the ATV2.
Change the wireless channel. You would need to do this on the router, ATV2 and any other devices you want present for testing on the wireless network.
Try a different brand wireless router.

  • How to deactivate Kerberos for Network connections?

    Hello!
How can I deactivate Kerberos for Network connections?
    Greetings

    Tim Haigh wrote:
I am not sure why you would want to do that?
    The problem is as following:
When I connect to my iMac I type in my username and password and can access the sharepoints.
When I click on Disconnect it seems to disconnect but when I close the Finder window and open it again and click on my iMac icon I am connected although I clicked disconnect!
And I read on a German Mac Forum that this isn't a bug but a feature called Kerberos, so Kerberos is responsible for this.
And when I click disconnect I expect that the system is really disconnecting me and is not holding some kind of secret card in the background.
    Thank you

    Hi,
If you're in a domain, then as S Guna siad, you should guarantee appropriate permissions to users.
If you're not in a domain, then you can use "Password protected sharing", but this setting doesn't have effect on computers in a homegroup
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings, All networks, turn on "Password protected sharing"

    Hello everyone!
I want to view the Network Connection Log on my MacBook. I know the Console.app is the app to view the system log but I do not have any idea where is exactly showing when I connect to the network by using the Wi-Fi networking or the Ethernet.

  • How can I stop the network connections popup?

In our house we have 4 macs...two of them are new and I set them up by restoring from TimeMachine rather than with the migration tool as I have done in the past. This was recommended to me as a "cleaner" way to set up new machines (at least on an alternating basis).
On these two new machines I get a popup "Do you the application "microsoft word.app" to accept incoming network connections (this is also for excel or any office product). I'm still using Office for Mac 2008.
The only way I can find to stop these annoying popups is to turn off the fire wall, which I do not want to do (and which I have not done on the 2 mac books and they work fine).
Is there some setting or script I can run to fix this?
    thanks,
    tom

    Linc-
I'm taking your advice because I've seen many other great answers from you...but not without some trepidation :-)
This is so weird ... I've set the mac books next to the iMacs and looked at every setting on them...all the same, yet one gets the popup and the other doesn't. I found that it doesn't matter whether I set the firewall to allow or not-allow, the popup is there in both cases.
Do you have any advice on airport settings that I should be changing the defaults to? (other than a good WPA2personal password which I have)?
    thanks again,

  • How do I delete old network connections?

I'm adding some new computers to my network and have discovered a mess of old connections in the network preferences. I'd like to delete the old ones in order to keep things a neat and tidy as I can.
However, I can't seem to find a way to delete them individually.
Is there some way to see all your network connections in a list or something and delete those outdated or no longer needed? I can find them individually using network preferences, but even then there does not seem to be a delete feature.
    G5 Dual 1.8   Mac OS X (10.4)

    Hi--
You can delete locations in the Network Preferences. From the "Location" menu, choose "Edit Locations..." and you'll get a little box with your locations. There's a "Delete" button there. If the "Edit Locations..." menu item is greyed out, just click the little lock in the lower left of the pane to open it, supply your password, and you should be in business.

  • Strange name under my shared Network connections!

    Hello all,
today I encountered a very strange thing on my iMac running Leopard.
Under the shared section in my sidebar of my harddrive window I see a computer screen icon with the name "-7ea1". Please see a screenshot here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/superfrunny/3419224364
When I right click and view info - it says that this is a PC-Server and has an icon from an old PC Monitor with a Bluescreen. See here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/superfrunny/3419239210
I first thought it is a something with Paralells that I use but it is not. I am not able to unmount it or to connect to it. Sometimes this computer appears when I start Mail but not all the time. Sometimes it disapears after some minutes. This is visible since 1 or 2 days and my Leopard install is one week old.
I have no other computer in my network and no wi-fi is active or any other device that could show up here.
Anybody else saw that or has an idea what this could be? I am a bit scared
    Thanks for any hint!

Because for better or worse the Finder doesn't update the list of machines in real time.
For example, if you connect to a network with shared PCs those PCs will remain listed in the sidebar even after you've disconnected and have connected to another network.
    Bug? Feature?
I couldn't tell you, but it is a bit annoying at times, and I couldn't find a way to get rid of the "phantom" hosts other than by rebooting.
