How to motion track footage onto other footage

not sure if my title is worded right but I have footage of a bus driving by with an advertisement on the side.. I want to take some footage I have of myself and put it on the bus advertisement in the other footage using motion tracking.

Any normal corner pin tutorial will explain it and in fact one of the basic tutorials for mocha AE covers tracking a poster onto a London city bus...

  • Motion tracking to create paralax in 3D environments

I'm going to be shooting footage on green-screen and I have looked at the Motion tutorial DVD which shows how to motion track where you would overlay an image onto the source footage (it's the one with the sat nav screen in the car). What I want to do is take a person shot on green-screen and composite them into a 3D environment but lock the environment to markers on the green screen so that it moves with the markers hence creating the illusion that the person is in the 3D space. Does Motion have that capability? Also, any tips for removing the markers (since they won't be green) would be appreciated as well.
    Thanks in advance.

    Howdy,
Sliding the ground plane around until it stays put is a bit too trial-and-error for me, so I usually pick a feature that is on the ground (a green point, i.e. has a high confidence value) and stick the plane to that. To do this, move the mouse over the desired feature, press the spacebar and select "Move Origin to Feature" in the menu that appears. This will snap the ground plane's origin to that feature, which makes positioning stuff in Motion a lot easier.
As for the export, I think there is a bug, of sorts. If you choose to export a Motion project, it creates a project with the footage and camera already in place. The ground plane is lined up with Motion's ground grid and the camera starts off in whatever relative position (X=100, Y=55, Z=-60). If you export a Motion camera file, the camera has the same relative movement, but it's starting position is (0,0,0), which means that the imaginary ground plane for the shot and the ground grid in Motion aren't aligned, and you're back to the trial-and-error when positioning objects.
So here's what I recommend: use the Motion project export. If you already have a project and just want the camera, copy the camera out of the exported project and paste it into your already-existing project, which will keep all the camera values A-OK.
Another thing that is critical: the project settings must be identical. PFHoe bases the tracking values on the resolution, frame-rate and aspect ratio of the footage. So if you track a shot that PFHoe thinks runs at 24fps with a square aspect ratio and and you bring that camera into a 30fps project with DV (non-square) aspect ratio, things won't line up, time-wise or spatially.
As some encouragement, here's a screencap of a simple track used in Motion.

  • Motion Tracking a Dolly Shot

I'm having a little trouble figuring this out. Thought someone on here might have done something similar.
The shot: A person walks down a sidewalk. The camera dollies parallel to them so it sees a wide of their profile. The person disappears and reappears in the shot as the camera dollies.
Is there a good way to pull off a poor man's motion tracking effect like this? Certain plug-ins to use to get it right?
A somewhat similar effect occurs a few (brief) times in this video: http://vimeo.com/24569304
Happy to clarify if that doesn't make sense. Thanks in advance!

Here's what I'd do. I'd shoot a clean take of the actor with a dolly shot with the dolly on track if possible and the camera locked off. Have an assistant keep track of the time.
Once you have a clean take, roll back and take another shot.
If you don't have a dolly and track then do the best you can to keep the shot as close as you can to the "good" take.
Now you need to track both shots in Mocha. There a re tutorials on how to track a moving shot available. You would stabilize both shots, lay the clean plate over the plate with the actor and crop it with a soft edge mask big enough to cover the actor. Did you get that? You want to lay the clean plate over just the area where the actor is. Make any adjustments necessary to the timing of the shot to keep things lined up by using time remap on the clean plate.
once you have the composited shots looking like there's no actor in the shot , then you can use transitions, fades, or other effects to bring in your actor by eliminating the top clean portion.
Once this is all set up, remove the stabilization on the actor plate making sure that the clean plate is tied to it by parenting.
Don't expect to be able to hold this hide the actor effect for more than a few seconds without dolly track. If you carefully watch the reference  video you'll see that there's not a lot of exact frame matching going on. There just kitschy transitions between takes. The first one is especially awkward and there's a big jump that's hidden fairly well by the transition. In fact, I can't see anything except the distortions of the sidewalk and the overlays that probably used motion tracking.

  • Exporting Motion Tracking (Becomes Out Of Position)

Exactly like the title says, I am motion tracking a logo out of my clip by using simple motion tracking.  The shot is a bit shakey but the tracker does a pretty good job, then afterwards to be certian I am going through frame by frame to ensure the entire logo is blurred out.  (Its fairly big). And doing minor adjustments if need be.
After rendering the clip in my composition window and watching it, its plays through nicely, exacly how I want it.
The I hit (Command M) to "Make Movie" and render my clip out.  I use "Best Settings" and render it out, the issue here is that when it is rendering, my blur becomes out of place and does NOT follow the logo like it should be.  It jumps around, it dosent completely leave the logo, and jump all over the screen, but it makes the logo clealy visible. But it somewhat follows the logo across the screen in a horizintal matter, but does not stay in place like how the motion tracker/I set it to be.
This is weird to me because I have blurred out several things in the film using the same method already, and for some reason this one is just not working.
I am on MAC OSX 10.9.2
    Running Creative Suite CS5
    Any ideas!?
    Thanks Much
    Dayln Girard

If you use MP rendering, turn it off, especially if you have linked tracking positions via expressions. Otehrwise you may wish to check what you actualyl adjusted - the search region or the feature center. Mixing them up may mess with how the coordinates are calculated.

  • I have a great number of Hi8 video tapes and I would like to burn them onto CDs through MacBook Pro (ME665LL/A), but I do not know how to transfer those footage into Mac. What would you recommend?

Hello everybody! My question is; my parents and I have a great number of video tapes (Hi8 and mini DV) and since I purchased a MacBook Pro (ME665LL/A) I would like to burn them onto CDs, but I do not know how to transfer those footage into Mac. What would you recommend(it can be a software, a hardware or combination of both)? By the way, I also purchased an external DVD-RW(Asus SDRW-08D2S) separately.

Just Google "convert hi8 to dvd" and you'll find a number of software/hardware combinations that will allow you to do what you want. One important piece of the puzzle is whether or not you still have access to the video recorder(s) that the movies were shot on.
    Good luck,

  • How do I motion track a facehugger?

    Hi guys, girls, anyone else,
I've made video footage of me shaking around like I have a facehugger on me. I also have a facehugger model in maya. I've heard about motion tracker software and I'm happy to incorporate it, so anyway I was wondering if anyone had any quick tips or advice on getting the facehugger composited correctly onto my face. I was thinking about first attaching the facehugger to a model head and then painting it green to remove in AE later. My main reason for thinking this was that (as well as a front shot) i have a side view shot of me being attacked by it, so in the side shot i don't the legs furthest away showing...
I'm a total newbie to after effects so any help would be appreciated
    Thanks
    Rory

That's not an easy task, especially for someone just starting out. It involves motion tracking, possibly 3D camera tracking, bringing the motion of the camera into Maya and occluding any parts of the mask that would be hidden by your face, then composite the two together. This is not something that can be covered in a single post. This would be more like a 10 page white paper. Basically, you track the face, import the tracking data into Maya, mimic the lighting in the shot in Maya, and then overlay your rendered mask with your footage.
First, you must get very familiar with AE Basics. Go through as much as you can. Then you need to read up and watch tutorials on motion tracking in AE and Mocha. There are lots of Mocha tutorials on the Imagineer site. You need to learn all about how Mocha tracking integrates with AE, how to track, how to mask or do roto. You'll also need to learn a lot about After Effects motion tracking to understand the process . Once you get a handle on that you can start doing some basic compositing. Look at tutorials like this one on Face Replacement or this one on eye replacement. Those should get you started.
Get to the point where you can do something like either one of the last two tutorials and then start poking around the Maya forums to learn how to insert a head in your mask and render only the front side (facing the camera view), add motion tracking data from AE or Mocha, or any of a dozen other tracking programs, to Maya, and then you'll be ready to start working on your actual project. I'd guess 10 to 20 hours minimum of research and experimentation and you will be ready start on your project. If a client came to me with this kind of project I would tell them it would take about two days in post per 10 seconds of footage to pull off a believable shot like the one I think you want to do. VFX of this kind are not and never will be a simple 1 click 1 plug-in solution.

  • How do I Import footage from Premier Pro CS3 to After Effects?

    Hi
As the subject says, how do I import footage from premier pro cs3 into after effects. I'm getting rather frustrated trying to figure this out.
Via copy & paste I can copy into after effects but this copys the whole of the track on the timeline, where as I just want 10 seconds copied. The 10 seconds I want to copy is a segment & was highlighted when I clicked copy.
Also when the full track gets copied, all my edits aren't copied & I get the raw track copied???
I've googled this, tried the "Add Dynamic Link" but all I want is to copy 10 seconds of footage from premier into after effects, add my effect & then copy it back, and I can't figure out how to do this simple thing
    Any help
    Thanks.

I am still not getting this.
I highlight the selection I want to copy into after effects. I copy & paste it & it pastes my entire footage without any off the edits I have made.
Having searched loads for this I can find no other answer than copy & paste.
Please please could you guy be more specific with your answers as I just can't figure this one?

  • How to I motion track between changing scenes

Hi i want to motion track heads on to people but the camera keeps changing back and forth scenes.  i would like to do this in motion, but i do have FCPX and Adobe After Effects if there is a way to do it there.

I'm not sure what you mean by "changing back and forth scenes", does it cut between scenes or pan back and forth?  Since we can't see your footage, it's hard to give specifics, but here are some ideas:
-Break the shot up. Use in and out selections and anlyze in sections.
-Use the offset track option.  After you track a "good" section, when the tracker fail (or you stop it) check the Offset checkbox in the Inspector. then find something that has similar horizontal or vertical movement from your subject, which should be at about the same distance as your subject, repostion the tracker and continue to analyze.
I would really suggest reviewing the documentation on using the tracker.  If you can be more specfic about your shot, or post a sample, we might be able to give you better suggestions.

  • How do I motion track just like the Plugin CameraTracker 1.0?

On the plugin CameraTracker, it automatically detects points that can be motion tracked, and it does it very well. What got me thinking, is that it also carries on tracking when a tracking point goes out of screen.
    Here's an example:
I am using CameraTracker. As you see, this is the beginning of the clip, and what happens in this scene, is that the camera just fly towards the jungle.
If you see "Hehe", there's a green cross, and that is where the "Hehe" is tracked to. That red box is the null object.
Okay, so when the camera is flying towards the jungle, it passes that green point. And as it passes, it does not stuff the "Hehe". That "Hehe" stays in place as if it was in this Minecraft world.
It says in place, even though the cross has gone out of place.
BUT, if I use the Adobe After Effects built in motion tracking, and just want to select that point where the "Hehe" is, and I begin tracking, it goes pass then green cross, then that tracking box goes everywhere.
How do I do this so it's like CameraTracker? I want to do this using the default After Effects Motion Tracker.
If you cannot understand what I'm trying to explain, let me know what part you don't understand.
    thanks.

Could you give me an example of "where you stop the track then move the track point to another spot in the image", using my picture?
What's the difference between CS6 Camera Tracker, and CS6 Motion Tracker?
And for the Camera Tracker plugin, I can only seem to track ONE part. If you see the image, the words are like in one part of the scene. If i were to put a word in a tree, it would look stuffed up. The word wouldn't be tracked onto the tree. It would be tracked on the sand instead.

  • How do I track motion on a video with inconsistent track points?

I have a video of a teacher in front of a chalk board. There is one camera motion when the teacher walks from one side of the chalk board to the other. I want to add graphics on the chalk board and make it look like they are pinned on the board. What's the most accurate way to track this motion for my graphics? I'm a real newb to motion tracking and actually haven't been successful at it so this one may take some extra explaining for me.
One think I tried was using the motion tracking behavior and I placed three track points at the bottom left, top left, and top right of the chalk board. I couldn't ad one on the top right because the teacher was in the way and at one point, the teacher walks in front of the bottom left motion track point, confusing it and loosing focus on what it's tracking. Am I making this harder than it has to be or can it be done accurately?
Here are a couple frames to show the (simple) panning from the right of the chalk board to the left. Other than this pan, the rest of the footage is still.

I don't do MAC's, but have you contacted their tech support?
I had this same problem on a PC notebook (TOSHIBA) which didn't have the TILDE key. One program I had needed the TILDE key for a major, often used function. The issue never got resolved.

  • How do I restore footage recorded at sea to the horizontal? It is 30 degrees from the horizontal.

How do I restore footage to the horizontal? It was recorded at sea and is 30 degrees from the horizontal.

Edit your clip to the timeline. Once it is on the timeline, double-click on the clip in the timeline so that it opens in the Viewer.
In Viewer, click on the Motion Tab.
In the Basic Motion pane, adjust the rotation of your image until the horizon line become usable. If you know it was 30 degrees off, you can enter 30 (to rotate clockwise) or -30 (to rotate counterclockwise) to the rotation setting and see your result in the canvas.
You will probably see areas of the screen that now have no picture because of the rotation. You can use the Scale control to enlarge the picture so that the rotated picture now fills frame. Keep in mind that scaling the image larger will result in image quality dropping, so scale carefully.
Depending on the horsepower of your computer, you may need to render to see the rotated image playback properly.

  • How to get the footage's current frame number in expression?

There are 2 layers. One is text layer, one is sequence layer.
Footage has begun from the 20th frame.
Therefore, the number of composition's current frame number and footage's frame number has shifted.
I want to show footage's frame number in text layer . not composition's frame number.
How to get the footage's current frame number in expression?
    Tatsuya

    >Footage has begun from the 20th frame.
Do you mean that the footage layer has been trimmed (so that the start of the footage lines up with the start of the comp, but the first 19 frames are not visible), or moved to the left (so that frame 20 lines up with the comp's frame 0), or that the sequence actually begins with the 20th frame (at frame 0 of the comp), or something else?
Are the frame rates of the comp and the footage the same?

  • How to get Motion Tracking Mode to work?

How do I get "Motion Tracking Mode" to work?  I click the icon and nothing happens, its like greyed out.

    scouterbsa
Here is my check list for you to review regarding using Motion Tracking Mode in Premiere Elements 10 on Windows 7 64 bit.
    1. You need a video and with enough motion in the object in it to track it. Color contrast between the object and its background can be important to success.
I created a DV AVI 4:3 in which I have a circle moving, and I have used a butterfly Clip Art from Premiere Elements 10 to track to track the circle as it moves in the video. In this example, you see the object only at 0 time.
    2. Select/highlight the clip on the Timeline. And then click on the Motion Tracking Mode icon above the Timeline.
You should next see the following Motion Tracking dialog asking for a Yes or No to the question "Run
Auto-Analyzer to track moving objects?" Click No.
    3. At this point, you will see a bounding box on screen. That bounding box should be placed using the mouse cursor on the object
that is going to be tracked, in this case, the circle. Resize and position the bounding box accordingly.
    4. Once you have the bounding box on the object and resized, click on Track Object at the top right of the monitor.
The screenshot below shows only the before clicking Track Object at the top right of the monitor.
When that action is finished the bound box edges will be an orange yellow color. I have skipped over a screenshot
    for the latter.
    5. With the orangel yellow bounding box in place, next drag the Clip Art (in this case, Butterfly 02) from the Clip Art display area toward and into the orange yellow bounding box frame. The orange yellow bounding box frame will turn blue. That is the first sign of success.
Hit the Enter key of the computer main keyboard and watch the results. The Butterfly should track the circle's
movement in the clip. The duration of the clip and the continuity of the object's motion in the clip can be  other factors.
If you do not succeed, try again with a different video clip (one with more movement and color contrast.
The above is a best case scenario. If it is speech bubbles that you are having problems with as well, we will deal with them next.
Right now it seems like you are having problems getting started rather than having a problem with a specific Clip Art that you are
using to track the object in your video.
We will be watching for your results.

  • Probably Stupid question, but - how to remove motion tracking from a clip?

I've been playing around with the motion tracking feature, and think I may have come up with a way to make it work to highlight my now infamous "football"
However, I need to delete the motion tracking effect (s) that I've added to the clip so that I can start fresh.  I cannot for the life of me figure out how to delete it!
This may be a very elemental question - and I apologize, but I cannot find the answer.  I just cannot delete the original yellow tracking boxes -
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Kim

To remove the Motion Tracking, just delete the graphic you attached to it. There's no need to remove the Tracking Object itself.
Although you can if you'd like. Just click to select the clip and then click on the Motion Tracking tool. Then right-click on the blue or yellow squares and select Delete.

  • How to use a webcam with Labview8,Vision 8 in motion tracking?

I have a webcam and Labview 8, Vision Assistant Module 8, NI IMAQ for USB Cameras. What I concern is how to use a webcam in motion tracking? Should I just use Vision assistant or use it in combination with Labview? Do I need any other support?

    4,
Thanks for your post.  Vision Assistant is a good software package to prototype your system, but it does not give you access to all Vision methods.  LabVIEW is much more powerful allowing full access to Vision.  You may want to use Vision Assistant to play with the algorithms (you can use your mouse to set regions of interest, etc) and then once you find the methods and parameters that work, implement the code in LabVIEW.
