I have a MacPro and Powerbook G4 on my gigbit ethernet network at home. I can use the finder on MacPro to locate my Powerbook and connect as a registered uder no problem. However I would like the MacPro to mount the Powerbook automaticall on start up or login... so I don't have to manually configure it everytime..
Any clues on how to do this ?

how can i use iphoto pics on another mac A across the home network for the screen saver on Mac B?

That's exactly what I tried to do, but the iPhoto librry doesn't show up in the pulldown menu. If I click "Choose Folder", the iPhoto library is greyed out and unable to be selected.
For some reason, iPhoto is an option in the pulldown library on my older iMac but not on my MacBook Pro. What gives?

  • 10.6.8 -- how to auotmatically mount `shared` Macs on network

Does anyone have a link to an explanation of how to automatically mount other Macs on the network, or if not, then post an explanation here on how to accomplish that objective?
For example, my Mac Pro tower has 4 disks and when I boot up all 4 disks are mounted.  Then, when I turn on my Macbook Air and turn on my MacBook Pro, those laptops show up in Finder as shared.  The Macbook Pro is partitioned, so it would be nice if I could specify which disk to mount in Finder.

    Hi lawlist,
If you wish to mount shared network volumes automatically soon as you log in, you need to place those items in your startup items. Use the procedure in this article -
OS X Mountain Lion: Open items automatically when you log in
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11177
The article title says it is for Mountain Lion users but the procedure is the same for Snow Leopard.
Note that you will want to manually mount the volume before doing this, so you will be able to find it when you try to add it.
Make items open automatically when you log in
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Users & Groups.
Select your user account, and then click Login Items.
Click Add below the list on the right.
Select an app, document, folder, or disk, and then click Add.
If you don’t want an item’s windows to be visible after login, click the Hide checkbox next to it. If you select a server (disk) to connect to automatically, the Hide option has no effect. Server connections always appear in the Finder after login.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,

  • How can view another macs screen without asking for permission

I just recently upgraded all 4 of our macbook pros to mountain lion.  So far no problems until I wanted to look at my sons screen to make sure he was doing homework and not playing minecraft.  I went to "Network", chose his computer on our network, then chose Share screen.  I get two choices "ask for Permission" or "Log in".   I have screen sharing enabled on his computer and I have myself as a registered user.  I have tried turning on and off the Back to my Mac setting in iCloud on both computers.    I want to be able to see his screen without it asking for his permission.  Kind of defeats my purpose for screen sharing if it gives him time to quit minecraft before he answers my request.
The other choice "Log In"  is beyond useless.  I have not idea what the purpose would be to be logged in on someones computer and only be able to see your own screen.
Before I upgraded to Mtn. Lion, I was able to screen share and see any computer without it asking for permission because I was a registered user on their computer.  I home school my kids and need to be able to see/control their screens from another room.
Any ideas on how to get this to work?
    Thanks,
    Jennifer

Nope, it shows me a log in screen with my daughter/son's pic but won't let me type anything in the password box.

  • How to mount home mac HD drive from remote?

I would like to be able to access my home mac from the road as i will be away. Ideally i would like to be able to mount any of the drives on my home computer so they appear on my desktop. How do i set this up and then how do i test it?
I do not have a mobileme subscription. The home computer is running 10.6 but the machine i will be accessing it from afar will be running 10.7.
I am not so interested in being able to control my home screen, I just would like to be able to view, open, copy the files on that machine.
I am thinking, is there a way to use the 'connect to server' feature? If so, what do I type there?
    Any suggestions much appreciated.
    Thx
    Felix

I am thinking, is there a way to use the 'connect to server' feature? If so, what do I type there?
The problem here is 2 fold.  First you have to find your home computer, as your ISP most likely uses DHCP dynamically assigned IP addresses, so one day you could a.b.c.d address, and the next you could be q.r.s.t address.  This can be worked around using a dynamic DNS name from a service such as No-IP.com or DynDNS.org.
Second, you have to get through your home router.  That involves configuring it for port forwarding of port 5900 for Screen Sharing and 548 for file sharing to your home Mac <http://portforward.com>
Once you get that all working, you would use  Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server...
    vnc://dyn.dns.name.or.ip.address.of.you.home.mac
    afp://dyn.dns.name.or.ip.address.of.you.home.mac
    VNC for screen sharing
    AFP for file sharing.
NOTE:  This connection is NOT secure.  You can encrypt your screen sharing connection, after you make your first screen sharing connection by changing the Screen Sharing -> Preferences -> Encrpt all network data.
However, I do not think the is an option for encrypting your file system data via the afp://address method.
Oh yea, and since this now exposes well known ports directly to the internet, you should make sure you have a very secure password on your home system.  Longer is better. <https://www.grc.com/haystack.htm>

  • Can't copy files to another Mac on network (Yosemite to Yosemite)

For years I've had no trouble copying files back and forth across my home network, but after recently upgrading (via fresh install) to Yosemite on my desktop, I can no longer copy files to my MacBook Pro. This is a simple drag-and-drop to a mounted network drive.
Specifically, the copy dialog box appears, but as it finishes, I get an error message and the transfer is cancelled.
I've tried changing the permissions, making the destination a Shared Folder, and messing around in every way I can think of. I've never had this problem with any other version of OS X or with any other computers. This is a major disruption to my workflow — has anyone experienced this lately?
My workaround for the moment is to copy to a NAS device, and then copy down from the other computer. But this transfer is much slower and requires me to touch both computers to make it happen. That, at least, proves that both systems are capable of copying files via network, just not from desktop to laptop in this instance.
    Please help!

For whatever reason, the problem seems to have righted itself. From what I can tell, I did four things:
Delete all `.DS_store` files on both computers.
Run DiskWarrior on both computers, booking from the USB thumb drive and performing operations on the system drives.
Mount both volumes on opposing computers. Don't attempt any copy or move actions until both systems are connected to one another.
(The one which I feel worked) Enable *both* SMB and AFP networking formats. Both computers should have both options checked. Screenshot below
If it's not one of those above options, I have no idea why, but it works for now.

  • Backing up to external drive connected to another mac on network

My sister has an external drive connected to her iMac which she backs up her Mac to using Time Machine. I have a Mac Mini downstairs that I would also like to back up to the drive (also using Time Machine.) Is there any way to mount the drive on the Mac Mini downstairs over the network and use Time Machine to back it up?
    Thanks in advance!

In System Preferences/Sharing, check to File Sharing, on her machine. It should show up as a choice, when you connect to her. Then, once mounted, drag it's icon to the right side of the dock. Just click that next time you need to connect.

  • Can't Connect To Another Mac On Network

I am not sure what is going on. When I first used my new MBP a week ago in the side bar under Shared there were 2 computers listed. Tony Johansen's Computer and tony-johansens-computer. The first connected to my eMac (running Panther) without a problem, the second showed connection failure.
Now, a week later and after migrating all files to the MBP Tony Johansen's Computer no longer is there in Shared and tony-johansens-computer still gives connection failure.
I do not know how to troubleshoot this. The eMac has file sharing enabled When I go to Network there I can see the alias for the MBP which is called Tony Johansen's Computer (2) but I cannot connect to it (just get a spinng ball) There is a 3rd computer on the network (an old iMac) but it is turned off and should not be causing any problem therefore.
    Any suggestions?

  • How do I control my mac from another mac not in the same network?

How do I control my mac from another mac not in the same network? Thanks

You can do it manually, but it is much simpler if you use a tool such as Back To My Mac, LogMeIn, or something like that. Those programs enable you to connect to your computer through your router without you having to adjust the router settings manually.

  • How to Move a Shared Time Machine disk to another Mac?

    Hi,
I have a network with three macs. Initially, I had a Time Machine disk connected via USB to Mac A. Mac A and Mac B used that disk for TM backups.
Now I have coupled the Time Machine disk (via Firewire if that matters) to Mac C.
Mac B can't find the Time Machine disk anymore (as well as Mac A I guess), although the TM disk itself has still the same name. When I explicitly open the TM disk on Mac C in the Finder on Mac B, Mac B does not recognise it as its original TM disk.
After I clicked Change Disk in the Time Machine preferences on Mac B, I was able to reselect the TM disk. However, it doesn't see that there is already a long history present from Mac B and Time Machine plans to back up from scratch.
How can I tell Mac A and Mac B that the TM disk that is now connected to Mac C is still the same disk?
Thanks a lot for your help.

I want to do the same thing but i have a BW database (SAP) and i want to move the datafile form one mount poitn to another due to space constraint, but i want to use BR*TOOLS utility to do this, so can anyone help me out on this on how to do this, what are the precaution need to be undertaken.

  • Networking with another Mac - FTP?

O.k. I don't know much about networking our 2 computers. Just enough to be able to work. I sometimes mount one of the two hardrives on the other computer to work on docs, etc. usually it works. In Finder, I choose Network in the Go menu, click on the other computer and log in.
Latelythough when I do this, it doesn't give me a chance to log-in and automatically mounts only the desktop of the other computer and I can't access the hard drives. One time I got a message about it being an FTP server (the other MAC)? It did this once before I and fiddled my way out of it by tinkering with the machines.
This time, I can't seem to tinker my way back into getting them to work.
Can anyone help me know what is going on or what to check?
    Thanks in advance.

How can I get the files I need off the drive before I reinstall the OS?
Connect it to another Mac with a FireWire cable and start it up with the T key held down.

  • How do I transfer an imovie project on one mac to another mac?

I need to get an iMovie HD project from another Mac onto my machine to continue editing in iMovie HD 6 - some sound issues that need resolving. How can I transfer the project? The original project is too large to fit on a DVD (Dual layer). Will I have to connect both machines via ethernet and physically transfer it? If so, how do I do this - I need to have an exact clone of the project (all titles, separated audio etc...). Please help!

'til vers6, an iM project is a 'solid' package, a single file you can easily transfer from one Mac to another.. establish a local network (ethernet, firewire or wlan/airport), allow one machine access to the other and simply drag'n drop project file (has a star as icon) onto other Mac ...
I like the socalled 'Target Mode', MacOs allows: connect both machines by firewire, launch one Mac and hold the T key .. now, Mac is a firewire-drive, you can access as 'external harddrive' by other Mac .

  • How to look at a Mac hard drive using another Mac

The motherboard in my G5 iMac recently bit the dust, so I removed the hard drive and installed it in my external inclosure. When I access the old hard drive from a newer Mac to retrieve the information I didn't have backed up, it sends me to the file on the "new" Mac, {If I try to go to "Documents" on the old hard drive, it takes me to "Documents" on the new Mac} If I click on the External "Mac HD" in Finder, then select "Applications" - it deselects the External "Mac HD" & shows the "Applications" folder on the external hard drive {I have some apps on the old one that aren't on the new one} but when I click on iPhoto, it takes me to iPhoto on the new Mac - How do I access the files on the old hard drive?

If you have an external hard drive connected to your Mac, it should show up in the sidebar of your Finder window, just like a mounted server on a network. So if you select that external drive, it should show you the contents of the drive, including all folders and files that aren't normally invisible. From that starting point, you should be able to navigate to whatever folder or file you want on the external drive.
Don't be fooled into thinking you can click on the folders or files listed in the normal Finder window and expect them to take you where you want to go, or do what you want to do.

  • How to mount network share on lion permanently

I want to know how to mount a network share from my NAS on mountian lion.
I have seen and tried the suggestions about using command+k or the "go connect to server" and mounting that way so the password for the share is put into the keychain, then dragging the now mounted share to the system preferences user login items.
However this isn't satisfactory. It causes windows to pop up for each share that I have when logging in.
What I Want is for the share to appear as a mounted hard drive in the left navigation column of the finder window. I'd also like to be able to make a shortcut to the share on my desktop (or put it in my dock bar). If it shows up under devices that is perfection okay too, just so it's there somewhere logical.
The pop up windows simply clutter up the desktop, and if they are closed, then the share is closed too, and then there is a manual process of having to use the very tedious command+k or go connect to server method to connect again.
I need them to be able to click and open the share. I don't need them wasting time putting in share paswords and the link over and over.. the share should just be there for them as they work through the day. And if they close the folder/window, then it should be easy to get back to it.
This is possible on windows and I want these mounts to work the same way.
    note: my NAS uses smb

That should work. You could try deleting the passwords in Keychain associated with it and try it again.
    Another route: Create Applescript:
Select the network drive and get info on it. Copy the server address. Open up Applescript Editor in the Utilities folder and create a new script. Type in mount volume, add space, "paste server address within quotations", and save as application to your documents. Run it from within applescript editor to verify it works. When it asks for a passwork, save it in Keychain.
Under system preferences/accounts/login items, click the + sign to add and select the saved application.
