How to mount my startup HD
My startup HD always appeared in desktop.
But since I formatted it and installed Leopard again it doesn't mount automatically in desktop.
How do I do to mount it in desktop?
click on finder the mac desk top, click preferences, click sidebar, click HD, and that should restore it to your esktop

How to keep an internal drive from being mounted on startup?
Other than opening the box and disconnecting them physically, how do I keep an internal drive from being mounted at startup? I have two problems:
1) despite having an SSD drive marked as the startup drive, I think one of my other drives is being considered first - startup takes a long time and it shows the gray circle with a line through it, before acquiescing into booting (rapidly and nicely) from the SSD drive. How do I make it ignore the other drives and go right for this?
2) when the system boots up, if I don't immediately dismount the internal drives (which I don't need most of the time), Time Machine and Spotlight begin going over them.
other than physically removing them, anything I can do in some OS X boot script to keep those drives from being mounted?Ok, I followed your directions (including de-seleccting and re-selecting the SSD as boot disk from System Preferences). Console: there was nothing under System Diagnostic Reports, but here's what the All Messages logs said after the Boot_Time that demonstrated my issue (3 min wait, then gray circle with a line through it, then finally rapid boot off the SSD). Is there anything here that shows what the heck it's doing before it actually boots off the SSD?

How to mount one of two external drives on startup without login
I have a Mac Mini that runs as a server on my network. It has two external USB drives attached: one contains documents, and the other is a TimeMachine backup of the server. Neither disk mounts on a machine on the network until a user interactively logs in, but I would like one of them to be mounted at startup of a MacBook Pro on the network running OS X Mavericks 10.9.3.
The following script was suggested at <https://discussions.apple.com/message/5770284#5770284> in response to a desire to mount all external FireWire drives running under OS X 10.5 Leopard:
You can do this with the following command (note: it will ask for your admin password):
sudo cat >/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/autodiskmount.plist <<"EOF"
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>AutomountDisksWithoutUserLogin</key><true/>
</dict>
</plist>
EOF
I have two questions about this command:
1. Is it valid for OS X Mavericks 10.9.3?
2. Can it be modified to mount only one of the external disks attached to the server (the one containing documents)?
Thanks in advance for your kind assistance with these questions.
Best wishes,
Stuart

<Email Edited by Host>I can now confirm this file
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/autodiskmount.plist
does automatically get created on Mavericks Servers but not on non-Server Mavericks machines. It is possible to create it on non-Server Mavericks machines and reports are this works as expected.
Obviously the fact it is created automatically by Server.app on Mavericks servers means Mavericks still supports this.
Rather than hand-editing the file as per the original tip the following will achieve the same goal but will result in a binary format plist file which is what Server.app would create.
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/autodiskmount AutomountDisksWithoutUserLogin -bool true -
USB disk won't mount on startup (have tried everything)
Hi!
I'm having big problems getting my USB disk to mount on startup.:(
It used to work perfectly by having 'mount /dev/sdc1 /media/disk' in rc.local (and umount in local.shutdown) but recently it started saying that 'filesystem type must be defined' (or something like that). So I changed the line to 'mount -t ext3 /dev/sdc1 /media/disk' but now I get a message that '/dev/sdc1 does not exist'.
So I decided to get this fixed in fstab once and for all.
I checked the designations of the disks with 'fdisk -l' and noticed that the USB disk would alternate between /dev/sdc, /dev/sde and /dev/sdd quite random on every reboot. In other words I couldn't mount it in fstab by using one of those paths cause I'd get the same problem with '/dev/sdc or -e or -d does not exist'. I figured the sollution must be to mount the disk by using UUID. I checked the uuid's and got the following (as you can see the USB disk is on this reboot registered as '/dev/sde'):
bash-3.2$ ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 2009-02-07 11:56 6cf5e803-429a-44c3-bcf9-0f007df623f3 -> ../../sda1

I other words the UUID of the disk should be '94911fb3-def7-4440-b6a5-5e09f91b19f6' so I added that to the fstab file, but I still get the same error that the disk doesn't exist. How is this possible? Isn't the UUID supposed to be the same no matter what? When the disk is clearly labeled with this UUID every time I check it why can't it be used in fstab??
Here's my fstab (I've commented out the lines that I've been trying out):
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
# <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
/dev/dvd /mnt/dvd udf ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
/dev/sda1 /boot ext2 defaults 0 1
/dev/sda2 / ext3 defaults 0 1
/dev/sda3 /var reiserfs defaults 0 1
/dev/sda4 /home ext3 defaults 0 1
/dev/sdb1 /extra ext3 defaults 0 1
#/dev/sdc1 /media/disk defaults 0 0
#UUID=94911fb3-def7-4440-b6a5-5e09f91b19f6 /media/disk defaults 0 0
What am I doing wrong here? I've also tried to use different options like 'rw,auto, exec' but it won't work.It seems I'm able to mount the disk from the terminal by doing '# sudo mount UUID=94911fb3-def7-4440-b6a5-5e09f91b19f6 /media/disk'.
But this only works when I do it manually. Adding 'mount UUID=94911fb3-def7-4440-b6a5-5e09f91b19f6 /media/disk' to rc.local only gives the error that filesystem must be defined and when it's defined I get the error that device is not found.
How can it work manually, but not in fstab or rc.local?
Here's my dmesg:

Prevent internal drive from mounting at startup
How do I easily prevent an internal hard drive from mounting at startup?
The machine has two internal drives and I want the upper drive to not mount unless needed. Both are bootable but lower is chosen as the startup drive.
Thanks for any help.
G5 dual 2.5 ghz Mac OS X (10.4.8)Take it out and put it in a removable FW + SATA case.
There is little need or reason to have it not mount. If it is backup or emergency drive, external would be preferable... and put internal drive bay to some other use. -
WD hard drive not mounting on startup...
Grrr! This is driving me nuts! I have a WD MyBook Essential 2.0T USB hard drive connected to my iMac 27" i7, and every time I reboot the iMac, the drive fails to remount. Disk Utility doesn't recognize it, either. My only option is to disconnect the USB cable and then reconnect it. The drive then shows up. But pulling a cable is so very not an acceptable solution! Don't think data can be corrupted if the drive hasn't mounted, but still....
I have four other, older WD drives and none do this. I had a more recent WD MyBook Essential drive that also wouldn't mount on startup on my old MacBook Pro, wouldn't take the updated firmware, and kept corrupting files, and I ultimately replaced it with this new 2.0T drive shortly after getting the new iMac. But even with a new drive, new iMac, and different cable, I still can't get the WD drive to mount upon reboot. Arrggghh!
Has Western Digital done something different with these newer drives? How can I get this thing to mount after a reboot?
Thanks!Steve Porritt wrote:

Thanks!
Western Digital has been playing with their firmwares for years. They keep trying to maximize power efficiency to anticipate when the computer will use the drive and shut it down when it's not required. This isn't really a good thing for Time Machine, and I don't want any vendor to constantly change their firmware for their purposes. Many other companies seem to be able to build drives that just work.
I've updated the firmwares on many of these drives for clients because they performed so flakey with both USB and Firewire. I think there are problems with the firmwares being designed to maximize power consumption at the cost of not being always ready for Time Machine. Some of the WD firmware is actually on the drive itself, not the interface chipset, so problems return when you swap out the drives in the cases...
In addition, I have no need for all of the freeware/backup programs and other features they junk up these drives with. I just want reliable drives for backing up files, without having to uninstall their embedded programs. I found this review that pretty much sums it up for me: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1FBX79QK9IR9N/ref=cmcr_prviewpnt#R1FBX79QK9IR9N
Looks like you've been burned twice by their eager, innovative engineers.
I buy all of my external hard drives from OWC at http://www.macsales.com -

How to mount a volume on an Ubuntu server in Finder?
I am a newbe in such advanced functions, but I like to find solutions and it is hard for me to give up.
I have a MacBook 13,3 and an Ubuntu server. I have managed to connect to the a USB printer connected to the server. But I have not found out how to mount the server in Finder, so that I can use an external disk connected with USB as a Time Machine disk.
Can anyone help me, and please as simple and basic as possible :-)?so i'll admit that I haven't done this but it would seem that since Ubuntu includes Samba you could, from 'Finder' click cmd-k and type in smb://[the path to the share]
that said I found this on the web:http://www.kremalicious.com/2008/06/ubuntu-as-mac-file-server-and-time-machine-v olume/
instead of mounting the disk via Samba, it tries to use a more native approach.....that said, this definitely looks more involved. -
How to mount a sharepoint server from the finder
Can anyone help me with how to mount a microsoft sharepoint services server from the finder. I need to do this because I want to use the collaboration features in Acrobat 8. In order to create a shared review I need to be able to open the document from the sharepoint site with the full version of acrobat and I cannot do that from the web browser. From a PC I would choose to add a network location and the wizard creates a network location in the explorer, then I can access the sharepoint site (across the internet) like another file folder on my local network. I cannot seem to figure out how to accomplish the same thing on the mac. When I put in the URL for the share point site in the connect dialog from the finder it opens a webdave dialog box asking for a domain name and I have no idea what that is and it tells me the password or user name is not correct. Any help would be appreciated
You might want to pose this question in the networking forum too.

Internal hard drives not mounting on startup
Problem: I recently did a clean install of Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion on my Early 2008 Mac Pro. Since then, one or more of my four internal hard drives will not mount at startup, and it's seemingly random which ones will or won't mount; it differs from one startup to the next. Obviously, the boot drive starts up, but the remaining three drives are hit-or-miss.
Troubleshooting So Far: I can open Disk Utility and mount the disk(s) manually, and when I click Verify Disk, the hardware checks out okay. After my most recent startup, I brought up the System Log in Terminal (sudo syslog -B) and found this entry for one disk ("Media 1") that did not mount:
Apr 25 10:40:09 new-host-2.home fseventsd[48] <Critical>: event logs in /Volumes/Media 1/.fseventsd out of sync with volume. destroying old logs. (454 0 68038)

There were no entries for the disks that mounted correctly. Can anyone make sense of this for me? The system jargon is a little beyond me.
Thanks for your help!Is "Media 1" the name of the volume, or is it just "Media"?

How to mount USB & CDROM drives from single user mode - Solaris boot disk?
Hi All,
I need to carry out ufsrestore on a single newly replaced system disk (no redundancy / mirroring) from either USB or CDROM drives from the following steps:
( i ) GRUB => e, e, cdrom –s, Enter, b (boot from Solaris 10 x86 media).
( ii ) Choose menu 1 for Install Solaris Interactive Mode to reach single user mode.Below are the commands that I have tried in single user mode without success:
mount –r –F pcfs /dev/dsk/c1t0d0p0 /cdrom (after unmount Solaris CD)
mount: /dev/dsk/c1t0d0p0 is not a DOS filesystem.
svcadm –v enable smserver
svcadm: Pattern ‘smserver’ doesn’t match any instances
svcadm enable autofs
svcadm: Pattern ‘autofs’ doesn’t match any instances
devfsadm
devfsadm: mkdir failed for /dev 0s1ed: Read-only file system
mkdir /mnt
mkdir: Failed to make directory “/mnt”; Read-only file systemPart of the problem is due to the current READ ONLY filesystems which does not allow the creation of mount point such as /mnt.
I have been able to create both / root (/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0) and /export/home (/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0) filesystems with newfs that are awaiting for restore using ufsrestore.
The only option I am left with is to attach a secondary disk to install Solaris 10 on either of them before bring the system to multi-user mode so that service such as volmgt, autofs, volfs are available to access USB & CDROM drives.
Any suggestion on how to resolve this issue?
Many thanks,
JackHi JKGN,
Is the directory a located under the root filesystem. ie /a? Are there any other mount point for say USB drive as well? I am not in a position to try it out right now but will get back
to you soon on whether /a exist or not.
Btw, the last thing I managed to do on this system at the time was added a secondary 1TB internal disk with the intention to restore both / and /export/home data onto this disk while
making use of all the disk device management services such as the following services only available in a fully installed Solaris system (both single & multi-user modes) installed on the
primary disk:
# svcs smserver
STATE STIME FMRI
online Jun_08 svc:/network/rpc/smserver:default
# svcs autofs
STATE STIME FMRI
online Jun_08 svc:/system/filesystem/autofs:default
# devfsadm
# iostat -En

As a result, I am left with no option but the need to rebuild this system with only a single primary disk while in single user mode. However, the single user mode that I am in is the
one from Solaris installation disk with restrictive (_cannot create folder for mount point or running disk management utilities_) capability such as those services just covered, compared to one from a completed Solaris installation system with full access to all filesystems and utilities / commands in general.
I would very much value your assistance on how to mount both CD & USB in this restrictive limited Read Only OS (assume that it is running from memory) in order to get complete access to
the blank primary disk so that full restore with ufsrestore could take place.
Thanks in advance,
Jack

Hello again Arch-Linux users,
I always search google very hard and for months (off and on) I search for how to mount a USB Flash Drive. Nothing ever work so I give up than try again months latter. I don't want to give up anymore and that is why I join this forum.
Here are some of the code I found on the net. Some of these commands will only re-mount the entire Arch-Linux running system in /mnt/usbstick.
sudo mount -o rw,noauto,async,user,umask=1000 /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbstick
... don't work it only re-mount the entire system
/dev/sda15 /mnt/usbstick vfat user,noauto,unhide 0 0
... don't work... I found nothing inside /mnt/usbstick
mount -t vfat -o rw,nosuid,nodev,quiet,shortname=mixed,uid=1001,gid=100,umask=077,iocharset=utf8 /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbstick
... don't work... here is the error i get:
mount: /dev/sda1 already mounted or /mnt/usbstick busy
mount: according to mtab, /dev/sda1 is mounted on /
It strange that most USB mount commands use the operating system partition itself- example: /dev/sda1 as the device for USB device, while others use /dev/cdrom for cd - /dev/dvd for dvd and /dev/fd0 for floppy.
Could someone post the code that will easily mount a usb device under Arch_Linux.
I'm using Arch-Linux core-64 (08-2009)
Thanks in advance

I needed a rapid reply because I been wasting too much time not getting anything done because I needed to get pass this flash-drive thing. I can now have a secure back-up in my pocket on USB to go. Arch-Linux does it better for what I seen while just dd'ing on disk.

Thanks demian,
sdb is the location for my single hard-drive machine. I saw it before in my list above but I changed it to sda1 because I knew no better. I had no clue it represent a 2nd hard-drive for LINUX if one is not already present.
This did it for me

How to silence the startup sound?
My MacPro emits the startup chord, loundly, from the internal speaker. All other sounds come from the external speakers. When I get home late it's like to wake the dead if I turn on my Mac.
This did not work this way before, the startup sound played through the external speakers and I could turn them down.
Any ideas how to kill the startup sound or make it play through the external speakers?
Thanks.Well, you know that's a funny thing, because I didn't actually intend to mute the startup chime. I just wanted it routed to the external speakers where I could control the volume properly, like the first poster. But the chime doesn't sound out of my external speakers. I don't hear it at all.
And I don't care. If my Mac fails some test, it isn't going to work right, I'll find out about it anyway. I also don't care because in 20 years of owning Macs, if there was a problem with my Mac I can't remember any of them being due to a failed self test, it was usually a hard disk failure or something on the motherboard while I still got the normal startup chime. The power on self test does not, for example, tell PowerBook G4 owners about the widespread problem that their lower RAM slot has failed. I just haven't found the chime to be useful, while many users find it to be extremely annoying. Apple could just flash the front panel LED differently.
The only time I've ever heard the failed self test tones is when I've played them back from some web page or utility that tells you what they mean. -
Being new to iMac and connecting four external drives I need to know how to mount and dismount them
noondaywitch
Thanks for your help and I've followed your reply and yes I can see how to mount and eject drives.
Probably it would have helped if I had told you that my drives are all USB.
All connected to a small four way hub which is then connected to one USB socket in back of computer.
One - I use as a music drive and is a 160 gb iomega
Two - is a partitioned drive for Photoshop use 340 gb WD
Three - is a drive which has all my ex-Windows computer files and is one TB WD
Four - is a Video and Film drive of one TB WD
Five - is my dedicated auto backup drive which is of one TB WD and is connected directly to a USB socket of computer.
I normally set my computer to sleep until the next time I'm using it, then when I do go to use it, I get the warning message regarding drive was not ejected. Didn't have problems like this on PC so I became worried that in time I'm going to loose files and or the complete drive. Which one is giving me this message is also a bit of trial and error problem. Like suck it and see.....lol.
Anything else you can help me with this query would be most helpful and appreciated. Like do I have to eject all drives before leaving computer and then mount all the drives again for next session.

How to mounted oracle database automatically in oracle version 8.1.7?
i want to know, how to mounted oracle database automatically in oracle version 8.1.7?
Does this mean you are not using the WIndows operating system, or you doi not want to do this 'manually' using some point and click method?
If this means, "do it automatically for reboots" and you are using the Windows OS, you need to set up a service and set it to automatic at reboot. Or, again in a Windows environment but at commnand line, use "net start {service name}" - as described in the manual.
