How to mount RAID disk with target mode

Hi,
On my Mac Pro I have 2x2TB HHD which I use as RAID 1.
For maintenance I need now to access the HHD content from my macbook via FIreWIre target mode. On the macbook however I see the two HHD unmounted as two independent units, not as RAID 1.
How can I safely mount my RAID 1 disk?

I don't think you'll need another computer or eight hours of downtime. You didn't mention the size of your internal drive but I'd assume the 300gb external will hold it all. I'll also assume the external is a firewire drive, if it's not none of this will work.
This is what I would do:
1. Download Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to clone your remaining raid slice to the external 300gb drive, and make sure to check the "make bootable" box.
2. In System Preferences set your startup disk to the external.
3. Restart from the external.
4. Run disk Utility to reformat your internal drive. At this point you're going to need to decide wether or not to set it up as a raid again. I don't think I would.
5. Use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to clone the external back onto your internal drive.
6. System Prefs again to reset the startup drive to your internal.
7. Restart and you should be good to go, and you've got your first backup done on your external.
8. Devise and impliment a backup strategy. Do you need daily/weekly/monthly backups? You'll have to decide how much you can afford to lose if your main drive goes belly up. There are several programs that are easy to set up a backup schedule on, the above mentioned CCC and SuperDuper and a little app called Deja Vu which runs as a system preference pane, is very easy to set up and if I remember is free.
Now, I say all of this not knowing what you do with your external drive to begin with. I am guessing that the raid was set up as a mirror to be a backup if the drive had problems....which is exactly where you are. Personally I would just format it as one drive and backup to the external. If the internal does actually fail you'll still have all your stuff and can run from the external until you replace the internal.
Make sense? I know I rambled a bit but it's really easy.

  • How to set permissions in firewire target mode?

I have a 12" PowerBook that's running Leopard and a 15" MacBook Pro also running Leopard. The 12" machine won't boot, so I'm about to wipe the hard drive, reinstall Leopard, and try to reload from the time capsule.
But since I don't really know for sure that Time Machine has been running, I'd like to make a backup first. I connected the machines with firewire cable and booted the 12" machine in target mode. It shows up in the Finder on the 15". But when I open the Users folder, it doesn't show anything. I'm guessing that there's a Permissions problem that I don't know how to overcome. How can I make a disk image of the current disk before I start the restore procedure?
    Chuck

You can grab a utility named "SuperDuper!" ( http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html ) which is able to create clones of hard drives.
If all you want to do is have it clone your hard drive then they allow you to use it free. They charge to unlock all of it's more advanced features -- but for what you need to do (make one simple clone of your hard drive before wiping it and re-installing) it's free.
Incidently, did you try booting from your Leopard install disk to attempt a repair? Pop in the Leopard install media & boot from it. You'll need to select your language on that first screen, but once you do you'll notice a menubar appears at the top of the screen (that most people don't notice) and there's a pull-down menu that'll let you launch Disk Utility. Since you booted from external media (and not your internal disk) it will let you run a "Repair Disk" on the internal boot drive. It may be able to repair it without your needing to reformat and re-install.

  • Leopard doesn't mount the disk with time machine backup!

Hi friends. It's my first time in this forum, and I'm sorry by now for my poor english.
My problem: One week ago I had some problem with hard disk, but after a visit to an Apple center and after a replacement of my disk the problem was solved.
Now I want to restore all my file and my system preference from an external hard disk (USB LaCie 500GB) when have made a complete backup with time machine.
But Leopard doesn't mount the disk in finder or in Utility Disco. I see it only in System Profiler. I try with my old iBook with Tiger and it mount correctly the disk! It's amazing! Please Help me, I need my file on my iMac for work!
    Thanks and merry Christmas!!!

Similar thing for me as well. I however haven't made a backup using Time Machine.
In preparation for Leopard, I reformatted my laptop's hard drive and installed Mac OS X 10.5.1 fresh. As soon as I plugged in my trusty 500GB external WD MyBook Pro (trying both Firewire 400 and 800 on my MacBook Pro 17"), I get the following alert:
    "Disk Repair
The disk "500GB" was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality. you must back up your data and reformat the disk as soon as possible. OK"
Keep in mind, I run Disk Utility and "Repair Disk" and "Repair Permissions" religiously every week and have had no issues while running under Mac OS X 10.4.11. My other laptop running the 10.4.11 doesn't report any issues with the drive at all - only when I plug it into this one running 10.5.1.
Is there a firmware update for this drive? Is this Apple's issue? I have another LaCie Firewire drive and it works flawlessly even under 10.5.1.
Right now, I can't even use the drive as it's Read Only (due to the error).
    In system logs:

The drive is reported to be "Ok" when running Disk Repair on other machines not running Leopard. As a test, I just "upgraded" my wife's laptop to Leopard and now I have the same issue on that machine.
    Help.

  • Can't mount USB disk with the atribute of  fix and read-only

    Hello All,
I have a usb disk which is set as fix(non-removalbe) and read-only. I tried to connect it to Macbook version 10.4.11 ,but it failed to mount the disk. However, connecting to 10.5.X and windows XP work fine. I am wondering is it a bug specifically in 10.4.11 only ? Could I get any patch for this problem ?
    Thanks,
    Ying

HI Ying and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
    Try repairing disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Re-install Tiger with target mode - how to boot to second disk?

I am resurrecting a friend's macbook. In the process of upgrading to Snow Leopard, the DVD drive quit. The install never finished and on boot it was showing the grey and black "please restart your mac" screen.
I used disk utility to repair the disk but it still booted to the error message. I erased the HD and was able to get it to boot using an install on a firewire drive, but I haven't been able to install it on the macbook HD.
I created disk images for each disk and put them on separate partitions on the firewire drive. I was able to install Tiger on her HD all the way to the "insert second disk" message, but don't know how to switch to the other partition where the disk 2 install is.
The original Tiger install is on the two disks that came with her computer. The Snow Leopard is the retail version on one DVD.
    Any ideas?
    thanks in advance

Unless you can boot your computer from Tiger then you cannot install Tiger via Target Disk Mode onto the other computer. You need to get an external DVD drive for the non-working computer or you can clone the installer DVD to an 8 GB flash drive and boot the computer using the flash drive via OPTION boot.
You can put both DVDs on a 16 GB flash drive that has been partitioned into two volumes.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the flash drive. Source means the installer DVD. If you wish to put both DVDs on a 16 GB partitioned flash drive, then the destinations will be a volume on the flash drive.

  • How to mount NAS 200 with journaled formated disk into normal system

Sorry if someone already post it, i had NAS 200 and it worked fine from last couple weeks, but suddenly due to some power failure, NAS 200 is unable to run, i had very important data in it and want to recover it asap.
Thanks in advance and i am looking forward to your replies.

If I understand correctly, you want to connect your disk from the NAS200 to a PC and access your files. You can do this with SystemRescueCD (see link in my signature).
Download the .ISO image file from the SystemRescueCD website and burn it to a CD-ROM using one of the many ISO burner programs you can find via Google.
Then boot your PC from the CD-ROM while the NAS disk is attached to one of the SATA ports of your PC. It can also be attached with a USB to SATA converter available from electronics stores.
SystemRescueCD will automatically recognize the disk from your NAS as well as the Windows hard disks in your system. The NAS disks have 3 partitions: one with data, one with configuration files and one that's used for swapping. You only need the first partition.
You can copy the files from the first partition of your NAS disk to one of your Windows hard disks by using Linux commands. The exact commands are different for each system so I can't give them here.

    Frequent NAS200 Answers:
    1. DISABLE the "convert failed logins to guest logins" option to fix permission problems.
    2. NEVER insert or remove hard disks while the power is on. NAS200 doesn't support hot swapping.
    3. ALWAYS use the power button to turn the NAS200 off, don't just unplug it.
    4. Don't trust RAID. Make BACKUPS!
    5. To ACCESS the disks directly, you will need ext2 and/or XFS file systems. I recommend using SystemRescueCD.
    6. Disks will get HOT with standard fan, use "green" disks or consider replacing the fan.
    7. FTP server is insecure and doesn't work behind a NAT router. Use my firmware and SCP instead.
    8. MY FIRMWARE supports SSH shell prompt and SCP for secure file access, and allows running other software.

  • Can not mount USB disks with Disk utulity

Today I received finally received the new Airport Extreme. I had no problems installing it in my WDS wireless net and combining it with the Airport Express.
BUT... mounting disk does not work.
I have 3 USB 2.0 Disk: 2 x Maxtor and one WD. All of them are seen by the Airport utility, but do not show up in the Disk Utilty on none of my Macs.
    I realy tried everything:
    - connecting them all at the same time using a USB 2.0 hub,
    - connecting them one by one using an USB cable,
    - reformating on my mac using Mac OS Extended (journaled) and connecting them,
    - renaming the names of the disk to simple names: no space, no numbers,
    - renaming the BaseStation.
No result, the onlything I see apearing in the Disk Utility Menu is the name of the BaseStation. If I click on this, a "Login" dialog box is displayed, if I try to login (all options tested) no result, and after a long time-out sometimes a message is displayed Not able to mount "drive-name.
Is there somebody who knows what to do?
    Regards, Marc
    2 x iMac G5; 2 x MacBook, iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

After you reformatted did you by chance add any files while directly attached to your mac.
Network drives won't show in disk utility, use airport disk utility to find them and have them mounted or use the network list in your finder.

  • How to repair backup disk with disk utility

My Time Capsule is suddenly telling me
"The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk."
It then goes on to say use Disk Utility to repair it, but how do I do that?
When I start up Disk Utility I cannot see the backup disk anywhere.
    Thanks

Suggest that you start with #C3 in Pondini's excellent reference document Time Machine - Troubleshooting

  • How to connect Hard Disk with my MacBookPro

    Hello Everyone,
I have recently bought MacBookPro, But i am unable to transfer the data from MAcBook to Hard Disk... Can anyone please help??

How is the external drive formatted? If NTFS, the Windows New Technology File System (NTFS), then you need to format it the Mac format, Mac extended (Journaled), using Disk Utility.

  • Is a clean install with target mode better than upgrade?

Hi, is it better to do a clean install of Leopard and then transfer my files through an external fw drive or do just doing a plain upgrade? I ask because I know how much smoother and snappier a system is with a clean install but I do need to transfer all my files somehow. Thanks

I haven't gone to Leopard yet (my copy is allegedly due here sometime today or tomorrow) but I did an upgrade install on my home Macs for every new version of the OS since, well, forever. In the past there have been times when there was a problem, but few of them, and all cured by an archive install. I have never done an erase install.
    YMMV.

  • How to reinstall a disk--with no serial number

My Photosop Elements 9 program recently has been sending me "disk error" messages.  Today I uninstalled it, planning to reinstall it.  i have the disk, in a clear case--with absolutly no information about a serial number.  Unfortunately, I apparently did not register the disk.  Now, to reinstall, I need a serial number.  What's the process now of being able to reinstall?

you'll probably need to contact adobe support but i'm not sure they can help you, http://www.adobe.com/support/chat/ivrchat.html
here's help for where to check for your serial, but i'm not sure this will help you either, http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/find-serial-number.html

  • How to use recovery disk with external ODD?

    Hello,
I need to recover my Toshiba laptop using original Toshiba recovery dvd, but my internal dvd ram doesn't work, so how I set my pc to look for external dvd ram when the windows is starting? I followed the instructions and hold the C button when started computer, but when I press F12 doesn't matter which drive for boot I select, my pc just starts windows...
Thanks for your help. J. Hlavsa

    Hello
What notebook model you have exactly?
Normally you can restore the factory settings from Toshiba recovery disk or if you use the HDD recovery option. To use the HDD recovery option you have to go in advanced boot menu (F8) and select Repair My Computer and follow the screen instructions.
If you can boot from external CD/DVD drive is depending on your notebook model that you have. Normally you can find more information in user manual about this.

  • How can I "repair disk" with Repair disk grayed out?

My external back-up has been complaining of late, Time Machine can no longer access it, and now, after trying Verify Disk, it stopped that process and told me to use Repair Disk.
Repair Disk is grayed out. But my WD unit isn't even six months old.
    Where do I turn?

I found a Grab of part of the response from Verify Disk.
If that's impossible to read, (1) blame Apple and (2) let me know -- I'll punch it up.
