How to mount SATA Ntfs Partitions on Arch Linux

Please help me mounting sata ntfs partitions.
Here is my fdisk -l :

As far as I know, the sata ntfs partitions are those with (sdb#).
I tried mounting one of them but this is what it shows:
[kaola@ArchHost ~]$ sudo mount /dev/sdb6
mount: can't find /dev/sdb6 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
Please help me, this is very annoying compared to ubuntu which does do the job pretty well.  By the way, I'm using kde as my DE.  Dolphin sees the partitions but cant access.
It says:
An error occured while accessing 'Backup2 HD2', the system responded:
org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.UnknownFailure: TODO:
have to rethink extra options
Reading some tutorials on ntfs-3g wiki, I've modified my fstab.  Still, I can't read the partitions...Please help me, this is my fstab:

Now that did the trick!!!!!

Any idea how to automate this? I want it to be automatically mounted so that it would be easy to transfer files...Pleasssseeeeee.....Thanks

  • I am unable to mount my NTFS partition after the last update

I usually mounted my NTFS partition with the "gnome-disk" utility. It works no longer, only if I start it with "sudo". But in this case the mount point will be in a directory called "root" and this cause several problems, eg.: old hardcoded paths stop working in scripts. What can I do to make the gnome-disk utility work as an ordinary user.

Thx, maybe I could use the fstab to mount the partition, am I right? But I don't know how to do it properly, because when I tried it in the past native hungarian characters iny the file and directory names always caused problems. If I somehow could capture the command sequence which the gnome-disk utility passes to the kernel / bash, would be helpful.

example, if i download a file in FF to the desktop, the file isn't there, if i want to see the file i must open thunar->desktop
    thanks (y)
Do you have "fam" listed in DAEMONS in rc.conf? xfdesktop and thunar use fam to refresh folder views.

Every option I use to mount the phone no longer works. MTP is not an option as the phone isn't recognized (only works for version 3+). I've tried jmtpfs which does not work. I realize this is an old phone, but I don't currently have the option to upgrade to a newer one. Obviously it's the file system that isn't being identified properly, but other filesystems come up with the same error.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I just tried mounting the phone using the vfat filesystem (all others seemed to fail), and that seems to have worked. I think the problem might be due to the memory card. I can only read half of the folders, while the other half reports "No such file or directory" even though I can see them in the root directory.
I'll work on it today and tonight (time permitting) and see if I can come to some sort of resolution.

  • [SOLVED]How to build debian package source in Arch Linux?

I'm porting openssl for sh4 arch.
If I use Arch Linux PKGBUILD, it built failed. (I guess that's caused by there is no asm code for sh4 cpu).
So, I decide use debian's source.
But, is there any one know how to porting debian's package into Arch Linux?
I can apt-get source openssl from other machine.  But I don't know what's the correct step to build it into Arch Linux' structure.
    Solution: refer brebs's PKGBUILD hint.

The source is not hard to find. Look on Debian packages - each package has 2 files, the ".orig", and Debian's diff (which is sometimes not a diff, these days, thankfully because just having a simple "debian/patches" subdirectory available is a little bit easier for us).
Edit: Here ya go, convenient links:
    http://packages.debian.org/sid/openssl

  • How to mount second ntfs HDD?

I have two HDD in my PC, one for operating systems and the other for all the large files which is formatted with NTFS (for Windows compatibility). I already have ntfs-3g installed and can mount my other operating system partition, but I have no clue how to mount my second HDD in my PC.

Assuming you only have these 2 drives hooked up (no external drives etc), your second drive is likely /dev/sdb. You can get a partition list by doing as root:
    fdisk -l /dev/sdb
Then run ntfs-3g /dev/sdbX where X is the partition number you want to mount.

  • [SOLVED] How to defragment an NTFS partition in Linux?

Hello, I want to defragment an NTFS partition (which contains Windows XP) from Linux especially because when doing that under Windows is not possible to move system files, so I guess from Linux it will offer better results.
Is there any tool that could do it, like fsck?
    I've tried this command:
    fsck -t ntfs --kerneldefrag /dev/sda1
but it does nothing, it only shows this message:
    fsck de util-linux 2.20
Is there any way to do it?
    Thanks in advance!

jakobm wrote:Please be sure to use the bbs search: Defragment a NTFS partition from LINUX
That thread has absolutely no information other than a list of motivations to use Windows to defrag it... and a link to a buggy Python defragger.
Here's the only bulletproof way to defrag NTFS under Linux:
Make a new partition of the same size (or bigger), and format it to NTFS and mount it at /defragged
Mount your fragged partition at /fragged
    rsync -av /fragged /defragged
Wha-la. /defragged is now your fragged partition, defragged. Reformat /fragged and rsync it back if you really must.
Drives get fragmented if you do multiple copies at the same time, so don't do anything else on the drive while it's syninc.

When I tried to install Windows XP on my Macmini BootCamp created NTFS partition. You know it was a bad idea because XP killed MacOS

Hi Warder, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Disk Utility cannot unpartition a drive without erasing the entire drive. There are some utilities that can unpartition on the fly DriveGenius is one. (I'm not sure if it is Universal yet) Prosoft is a trusted software vendor but I would still do this "at your own risk".

  • How to get patches to official/mainline arch linux kernel?

    Hi,
I'm maintainer of compcache PKGBUILD (compcache is ~ compressed virtual swap disk).
For proper work it needs to apply some patches to kernel....
I know there is an alternative to create another PKGBUILD for a custom kernel, but this seems to me an overkill.
I would like to include these patches directly into mainline arch linux kernel....
Is this good idea? How should I proceed then?
    Tibor

    Wintervenom,
I did not know about zen kernel at all, but though it would not be very good solution, it could be the best one. So I will post an recommendation to aur to compcache, that to get proper function of compcache one should use zen kernel...
But I 'm not going to install this kernel as compcache is not so important to me to replace mainline kernel...
    tomk,
It seems that compcache will not be completely included in linux vanila kernel before 2.6.34, so that means about six months... In the meantime, compcache will not be usable with mainline arch linux kernel...
And can you please advice me how can I submit such feature request?

  • A huge issue with a shared ntfs partition between Arch and Win8.1

    Dear Community,
I've recently had to install 8.1 in order for my CAD/CAM software to work. I've a PC with two drives, a 64G OCZ SSD and a 300G HDD. The motherboard is BIOS based, and both filesystems are MBR. I've had Arch rootfs on the SSD for a long time, thus I've created three partitions on the 300G drive, one for windows, one for ext4-/home and one for ntfs-/dropbox, which is designed to be a ntfs-3g filesystem that is supposed to be shared between the operating systems. I've already done the same thing on my laptop, but the difference is that it was done on a single drive. And now the catch - Windows Explorer does not see the /dropbox partition, however it is visible in the management software (right click on my computer, then manage, and then drives or something alike).  Plus, using the drive manager, I cannot assign the drive a name - the option is blacked out. I've noticed that the drives were visible on the first launch of Windows, afterwards I've launched linux in order to set up Dropbox, afterwards the drives were not visible in windows anymore. I shall post screens of the situation and the partition table as soon as I get back home.
I don't really know what logs or info should I post here in order to properly diagnose the issue, so I'd like a helping hand. I've noticed that similair issues are widespread within the ubuntu community, however, none of the resources I've found yielded a working solution. I'd like to methodically get to the bottom of this. Thanks in advance!

    Sure thing,
The problem is that Linux sees the shared partition, and windows is "blind" to the partition. Blind in the sense that I cannot access or see the partition from Windows Explorer, but the partition is visible but not manageable in the Drive Manager of Windows. As soon as I get back home I'll be able to upload some actual screenshots.
Sorry for the aux info, it's kinda of  walk in the dark for me.

    /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1 ext3 auto,users,rw 0 0

i created the folder /media/sda1, and i mouted it with this parameters
    /dev/hda1 /media/hda1 ntfs defaults,nls=utf8,umask=007,gid=46 0 1
but then i had the problem of
file mounting system busy, wich i solved removing the line on my fstab
    well, that's all
    thanks

Did you mean /dev/sda1 instead of /dev/hda1 ?
I would also mount it under /mnt/sda1 instead of /media/sda1 because /media/ stuff seams to be mounted by other stuff automatically...

  • Bootarchive corrupt, how to mount SATA root disk in failsafe?

I have a HP DL385 with 4 SATA drives, the machine crashed today for unknown reason and rebooting was not possible since the boot-archive got corrupted.
I booted into failsafe, I get a prompt but I also get
    "No installed OS instances found".
Apparently the SATA driver I loaded from a separate disk during the installation is not part of the failsafe kernel.
How do I get the boot-archive repaired? Is there any way?
    Any hints are very appreciated.
    Markus

This is sort of a guess:
Maybe the SATA driver might be loaded if you boot from the
Solaris installation CDs or DVD. Then maybe you could exit
to a shell prompt, and try running:
    bootadm update-archive

  • How to implement bundle-like mechanism in Arch Linux

I like Chakra's bundle system and I want to make it in Arch.
I heard that bundle system is just a separate file system(like loop? I am not sure).
    Can you give some details?
However, I think there must be some reasons that Arch does not implement such a convenient tool as bundle system.
I want to hear about these reasons.
    Thank you.

If you go back more in the history behind Chakra, how it came to live, you might know, it started bc of a desire to do another split.  That one was for KDE, resulting in KDEmod, which was fully accepted by Arch, a few years after, and is currently the way KDE is build in Arch too (KDE being split in multiple packages).
While Chakra was just Arch + KDEmod, more and more users stated, there was a desire to split toolkits too.  Have a system that was either based on GTK, and for Chakra users, a system base on just Qt/KDE.  When the late Chakra founder Jan Mette called the meeting in February 2010 the discuss the plans for a full split from Arch, this desire expressed by many users was one of the driving factors for his decision.
To have a fully functioning distro, and doing something this different, the discussion included finding some MacOS way of including some of the most well known, and revered Linux apps, that were GTK based.  That is how the idea of bundles came to fruit.
At the start, a few hundred packages had either makedeps  or full dependency to gtk2, so it was left up to the user to install those apps, though the ISO's were gtk free.
Once the bundles became more functional, and included all those most well known and revered Linux apps, the majority of the gtk apps were removed (slowly) from all repo's.  Plus in the good 2 years since, many apps/libs have been stripped of gtk, since many apps are build to function on both gtk and qt based systems, though they do not need the gtk libs at all to work just fine on a qt based system.  To remove gtk libs/functions from one app, makes very little difference, for ten, it is not a big difference, but you repeat it over a hundred times.....
GTK is still in the repo's, and probably will stay there.  Users who do not want to stay gtk free have added many such apps in ccr, and as a service to them, it is nice to not have to compile gtk.  Plus there is no real solid substitute yet for flash, again as a service, it is still an option.  The bundle buildsystem also draws from the repo's, if a certain lib/app is set to draw from there during the bundle process, that is another reason gtk/gtk-apps are still in the repo's.
As Allan states, downloading multiple bundles, will download multiple instance of a highly compressed gtk (or other lib/app).  This is ofc a draw back for bundles, but again, a well thought out, and chosen draw back.  Users who need more then 4-5 bundles, should really rethink using a distro that made the choice to see if a distro can be fully functional, when splitting toolkits.  Those users can install their needed apps from ccr, or perhaps should choose another distro.  But to have an application not needing a rebuild/break bc of a .so update is a big plus.  When libreoffice was not stripped of it's gtk deps, it was one of those bundles.  It included all, and one such bundle still runs perfectly on one of my installs, it was build February 2011 (granted, I'm using this one as a test case for bundle longevity).
For those who do not need but 3-5 bundles, there is no gtk installed (takes more room, then downloading it in compressed form a few times).  And many bundles do contain more then one gtk app (GIMP bundle includes xsane for example, chromium includes flash, google-talkplugin, pdf plugin), so as an example in my case, I run one bundle almost all the time, and it brings me the only 3 gtk apps I need and I my installs are gtk free.  Btw, all bundled browser include the flashplugin.
But bundles are not just for gtk, Skype is another example for bundle use.  This app brings in about 50 lib32 packages, if you are on x86_64, why install all those for just one app?  Some will state, it makes no difference, don't care to have a lot of extra libs installed, some will prefer to keep a more "clean" system.  Chakra goes with the latter.
Since the bundle process can draw from the repo's, or build all needed packages in that system, in any setting chosen, any security update is no extra work, then any other rebuild.  That security update was either done in the regular repo's, all needed then is rebundle all included apps (the final bundle process, squash them, etc, takes about 40 secs), or if the apps is not in the repo's, just that one is rebuild/adjusted in the bundle system, and again, bundled with the rest of the existing packages included in that particular bundle.
To address as a final note, the point made, you can't be bleeding edge bc of bundles.  I'll give the example of the gimp-dev bundle.  It needed the latest babl, gegl, much newer glib2, gtk2 (and more from that stack) then was in the repo's.  All those were updated in the bundle system (though not a visible repo, the bundle build system has some 200-250 packages at most times), tested and ran successfully for many users, and always making the latest dev version available for gimp, until the final release this week.  Since all glib2 updates were tested in this bundle for quite some time, when it was time for this update in the regular repo's, it was a simple and quick update for the whole stack.
Bundles are not perfect at this stage, far from it, there are still many plans to improve on the whole system, but for something that is in use just 1 1/2 years, it truly is a viable option to have a system running on a single tooolkit.
To address a question posted while writing this.  Chakra uses testing repo's a lot too.  Bundles are fully rolling, always the latest available, just like the apps and games repo in Chakra.

All I have installed now is the base system; I haven't been able to install any graphical environment yet because I can't download anything from the repository. Any help here? I really need this working!

I had this problem also. A quick fix is to go to network settings under the arch virtual machine entry, and select bridged adapter instead of NAT. That should fix everything up
