How to move catalog in PSE6 / work from external drive?

Hi, I've just moved my PSE6 catalog to an external hard drive to free up PC memory / improve performance. I've tried a LaCie 2-big 1Tb drive (RAID1) connected via ethernet to my PC with a seperate drive to back that up connected via USB. Moving the catalog's worked fine and it has kept all my keywords too etc Ok too. However, I now have 2 issues:
1) Many of the raw files (.CR2) are now not showing properly in the organiser and instead show as a grey box with zigzag line through it. These files open up ok in editor, so they are still there and catalog abviously still knows how to find them. This doesn't seem to have affected all raw files strangely, only recent ones. PSD files are unaffectedand all show up fine. I've tried changing/updating adobe camera raw several times but hasn't helped.
2) PSE doesn't work as fast as I'd hoped having moved images to an external drive - eg takes quite a while refreshing thumbnails and opening images to edit etc. Is this just something you can't avoid when working off files located on external drives? does anyone have any solutions? I'm moving into commercial phiotography and can eaily take 10-20gb of RAW files every shoot, so couldn't carry on saving to my C drive!
Comments/ideas appreciated!

A couple of comments here. First, moving stuff to an external hard drive does not free up PC memory. If you thought that would happen, you are mistaken.
Raw files not appearing properly in the Organizer is probably a PSE6 bug; see http://www.adobe.com/go/kb403728
I think the speed problems you are noticing might be due to having the catalog file(s) on a networked drive; please read: http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_Storing_the_catalog

  • Work from external drive

I would like to work from an external drive. How can I reset the path so that it saves and works from an external hard drive? I'd like to set it up as a scratch disc

    Yes. Very easy.
Just drag your current iMovie project to the properly formatted external drive. It will be copied to that drive. Put it into a folder that you name 'Movies.'
Leave the iMovie 6 app on your computer's drive. Then, open the project by clicking on its icon on the external drive. Next time you open iMovie from the dock (if you have it there), it will automatically open the project on the external drive. When you create a new project, the 'Movies' folder on the external drive should appear as an option for the 'Save' location.
I copy my iMovies from drive to drive frequently. If I am working on a particularly complicated movie, I copy it to another external drive (I have four) after major editing. That way, if a disastrous problem occurs with a drive, I will have a recent version so I will not have to recreate the movie from scratch.
You can presume that I have experienced some drive failures in the past

  • How to move an iMovie project to an external drive ?

Hi I need to move my iMovie project to an external drive, to free some space, please help. if it's possible.....

To make sure that all required media is in the library contain the project you need to "Consolidate media"  see:  http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov882dee351
You can then copy the library to your laptop with the Finder and open it with the same version of iMovie.  The last phrase is important since Apple has made changes in the project format several times even between minor updates of iMovie 10.  Earlier versions may not be able to read the library and later versions (not possible in this case) may cause the project to be updated so that it is no longer readable by the desktop version.   iMovie on the laptop will not at first find the copied library - you will have either to double click on it or File - Open library - Other and navigate to its location.

    Hello Surya,
    > I Need to move the mirrlogA and mirrlogB directories from C drive to D drive do i need to make any modifications to the configuration files.
If you do not modify any oracle "settings" .. you have to do 2 things.
    1) Change the entry in the pfile / spfile for the control files
    2) Rename the redo log files to the new location with the ALTER DATABASE RENAME command after you have shutdown your database
For more information how to rename a file take a look at:

  • HT1349 Hello, how to move the iTunes master file from C drive to an external drive and them iTunes stick with the external drive after on an on going basic?

My desktop C drive is full HD of 1 TB, I would like to move the current iTunes master file to an external 4TB drive and then iTunes stick with the external drive
Could this be done, if yes how to do it?
    Thank you for your help
    Henri

If it's the same as with a PC, the procedure would be to:
    (a) Plug in the new external drive,
    (b) Set your iTunes preferences such that the iTunes Music Folder is on the new drive,
    (c) Use the iTunes "Consolidate Library" utility to copy your library to the new location.
    (d) When the transfer is complete, check "Get Info" on some songs to verify their location.
The original files will remain on the old drive, so you'll have a way to recover should there be a problem. You may need to manually copy any iPhone/Touch Apps to the new drive since I'm not sure those are transferred with the Consolidate utility.

  • How do you direct EXS24 to read from External drive?

my logic pro EXS24 is not reading from My external drive. How do i create a path??

    Hi Nastushka
Glad you liked the website, it's my intention to keep updating over time and I hope people continue to find it useful. I was very lucky when I started out that lots of very smart people helped me out, so it's nice to continue the tradition.
    In answer to your question.
To the best of my knowledge there's no way to have the actual .exs files on an external drive and have Logic still see them. My understanding is that Logic performs a number of "scans" on start up, during this process it checks a number of preset locations and then adds the files it finds to your available tools.
The good news is that the .exs files are relatively small, so they shouldn't eat in to your hard drive space too much. It's the audio ( wav or aiff ) that takes up all the space.
For example I have Pure E-Basses on my laptop ( from which I'm typing ) and the whole folder of .exs files is 6.5meg the related samples folder is 2.52gig.
Ok, moving into speculative mode, _I haven't tried this myself_, if you absolutely must have the .exs files on an external drive I can think of no logical reason this couldn't be achieved with the judicious use of an Alias. So you'd create an Alias of the .exs files and put these in the correct location for Logic to scan and point these Aliases to the original files on your external HD.
Unfortunately I'm not in a position to test this at the moment.
Maybe somebody could chip in if they've tried it ?
I'd also suggest that if you don't have enough room on you internal HD for the .exs files you may have bigger problems down the line. All HDs ( in my experience ) need a reasonable percentage of free space to work at their best.
I'll copy this into the other thread, it may be sensible to continue this discussion in one thread from now on.

  • Best way to move small subset of music from external drive to laptop?

I have all my music on an external harddrive. I want however, a small subset of that music to be on my laptop, so if I'm away from my external drive, I can listen to a few things. What's the best way to do each of these: moving one song, a playlist of songs or a random selection of songs.
    Thanks,
    JONATHON
    I have a powerbook G4, OS/X: 10.4.11, i-tunes 9.1.1

Can you direct me to your solution?
I recently consolidated all of my 130GB of media onto an external hard drive [EHD}.  Now I want to remove a remaining subset of 70GB still remaining on my laptop. Although attaching the external drive to laptop works well for listening to music,  slightly more convenient would be to have a very small subset of music on my laptop. Most convenient, would be 10 or 20 of my favorite playlists, in sum, perhaps 1,000 mp3s.  If I completely delete itunes [libraries and files] from the laptop, i think i understand how to transfer such playlists from the EHD to the laptop. However, I am not crystal clear as to  the most efficient way to selectively 'copy' only the corresponding  1,000 mp3s from the EHD  [comprising 130GB worth!] to the laptop? Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Really appreciate it.

  • How do I transfer library and playlists from external drive to PC?

My old PC with iTunes died for good. Luckily library and playlists were save on and external hard drive. How do I transfer my library and playlists from that drive to another PC (Windows XP) and are the arrangement of tracks within the playlists included?

Correction to my last post (in bold): I'll try to explain what I did originally, not knowing everything that would be required to transfer, so you can better understand my situation. Just before my first computer died I saved my Music folder containing iTunes, Library, and Playlists folders to an external drive, so I no longer have programs, sub-folders or other information rooted in my first computer. I then downloaded iTunes to my second computer (Dell Vostro 1520, WindowsXP). I then dragged my Music folder from the external drive to iTunes 11.1.5.5 music tab and near as I can tell the library was transferred because in the Songs tab, the tracks are there in duplicate, one with the exclamation at the left and one that functions playback. (However, my total song number is doubled and that can be addressed later if it doesn't impede anything). In individual playlists each track within has a “not connected” mark. I have an extensive playlist catalogue so I would rather not have to reconnect them one by one. Can you think of a solution where I don't have to do that? Would you like more info? Aragorn

    Hi,
The Canon S100 wasn't supported until version 6.6 of camera raw and that isn't supported by pse 8.
You options are to either upgrade to pse version 10 or use the DNG converter

  • How to restore my backup in laptop from external drive

How to restore my backup in my macbookpro from external drive

    Hello Jayrajjpatel,
It sounds like you have a Time Machine backup on an external drive that you would like to use to restore your computer. The following article will help you get that done, named:
OS X Mavericks: Recover your entire system
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14185
If you’re restoring your system because of a problem with your startup disk, repair or replace the disk before following these instructions.
Make sure your Time Machine backup disk is connected and turned on. If your disk is on a network, make sure your Mac is on the same network.
Choose Apple menu > Restart. Once your Mac restarts (and the gray screen appears), hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys.
Select “Restore from a Time Machine Backup,” then click Continue.
    Do one of the following:
External backup disk: Select it, then click Continue.
Time Capsule: Choose your network from the AirPort menu on the right side of the menu bar, and then select your Time Capsule and click “Connect to Remote Disk.”
Network backup disk: Select it, then click “Connect to Remote Disk.”
If necessary, enter the name and password you use to connect to your backup disk, then click Connect.
Select the date and time of the backup you want to restore, then follow the onscreen instructions.
After you restore your system, Time Machine may perform a full backup at the next scheduled backup time. This is normal. Time Machine resumes incremental backups after the full backup is completed.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Edit in photoshop not working from external drive

The command works fine on files stored on my internal drive, however, for files on my external photoshop just opens but the file does not appear. Lightroom 5 - any ideas? (On a mac)

Every camera model has to be profiled and programmed for specifically since the sensors are generally different as that is a key thing the manufacturers are working on to improve, so if your version of software is older than the camera then the software won't know how to deal with the raw data.
You haven't answered the question what versions of what software are you using?  You can use Help / About Photoshop or Help / About Lightroom or Help / About Plug-ins / Camera Raw or About Plug-ins / Camera Raw depending on what version of what software you're trying to determine the version of.
The other thing to know is that Adobe doesn't update older versions of their software for newer cameras--they only update whatever the current selling version is at the time, so if you have, for example, PS-CS5 or Lightroom 4.x then those obsolete software versions would never be updated to handle cameras that were new to market, this year, since the current versions of software are LR 5.x, PS-CS6 and PS-CC..

  • How to move lrcatb back to internal drivefrom ext drive

how do i move lrcat 5.3 file from external drive back to macbook pro internal drive and  keep all photos on external drive where they are now, my mackbook pro keeps shutting down, with maverick and seagate ext drive, i am thinking if  i move lrcat back to internal drive, it may help, i want to do this all thru lr of course, please advise

Just drag it n' drop it (just the lrcat file itself may be all that is required, but it would probably be best to drag the folder it's in instead, so that everything that's associated with the catalog comes along too, e.g. previews). Location of catalog bears no relation to the location of photo files in said catalog..
