How to move files between users on a mac

i have just brought a new mac
set myself and partner up as two sepertae users
how can i send music from my itunes over to his itunes?
i undertsand i cant go directly into his user account, but believe there is somewhere i can send them?

Open another Finder window by pressing the key combination command-N. In that window, navigate to the items you want to copy, then drag them to the other window.

How to move files between folders within Lightroom 3?

I would like to move a file from one folder to another within Lightroom 3 (let's not discuss why). I searched the threads but couldn't find the answer (maybe I missed it). When I click on a photo within grid view then drag and drop that file onto a different folder in the folder panel (to do the move), a little plus sign (copy) appears and a copy of the file is placed in the second folder. If I try to delete the photo from the original folder (to get the move), both copies of the file are removed. I've tried holding down all sorts of keys on the imac but cannot get the move to work. Ideally, I'd like to move a group of photos but cannot even move one. Does anyone know how to move files between folders in Lightroom 3?

Try selecting the photos, right-clicking the target folder and choosing

I am also interested in this post. The FB ARCHIVFILE_SERVER_TO_SERVER workes fine for copying the file, however I also need to remove the file from its original location.
Does anybody have a sugestion on how I can do that (in coding).

How to share files between user accounts

I have used the shared folder but I must duplicate the file every time - how can I get it to use 1 file on both users and saving it to the shared folder?

When you say "Shared folder", do you mean /Users/Shared, or the public folder of your user, or some folder you are file sharing?
If the file is read-only (for the other user), then that's why you're getting the Duplication request.
I would put the files in /Users/Shared, and that should work.

I'm the administator on my computer and want to switch some stuff - from Itunes and Iphoto mainly - to standard accounts set up for other users, namely my sons. When I try to drag stuff into their folders, they are marked with a Red No Entry sign and I get a message telling me that I dont have enough privilages. I've tried the Shared folder, but although I can drag stuff, it cant be opened via the user accounts: there is the same No Entry sign and message. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong.

Hi. I've never had any trouble dropping things in the other user's Public Folder > Drop box. That one should be available to you.

When I move files between mac the creation date changes, I want to keep the original dates.

When I move files between a couple of Macs the creation date etc chnges to the time I'm moving them.
I need to keep the original details.

Well it now looks like it has sorted it's self out, all working fine now.

My husband and I share an iMac. I have a MBA for traveling and my husband a PC laptop (though he rarely uses for private stuff). We both have iPhones.
We are looking for a way to:
- Share our photos (we don't use iPhoto) and some files. We would like to have this in one shared folder, that we can access from both accounts in the iMac, the MBA and ideally (though not a must) the PC and iPhones. We would both need to have admin rights to edit documents, etc.
- Have access to all the information in my account on the iMac from the MBA. Ideally, same thing for his and the PC.
- Have access to all the data remotely when traveling.
- Have all the data backed up locally (we already have a cloud backup, but we'd like to have a local backup too as it's easier and quicker to access)
We have read a lot about configuration, NAS, time capsule... but we get more and more confused, as we are obviously no tech experts.
Dropbox is not our preferred choice. We already have a cloud backup system. We'd rather have the files stored and accessed locally for everyday use.
Using a NAS to store shared folders and backup the rest sounds good, but they either seem very complicated to set up, or they have mixed reviews in terms of stability, especially to access files remotely.
Timecapsule seems easier and more straightforward, but I'm not sure it would solve the "sharing files between users and macs with admin rights"? It seems to be more focused on backing up the main drive and then providing access to the backed up files. (Though I might be completely mistaken!)
We just can't manage to have one shared folder between both accounts in the iMac. We need to grant admin rights document by document. We don't manage to make it work automatically so we both have one folder to access with full rights for all the contents inside it. And this seems to me like something that should easily be done...?
Any help, advice, proposals... would be greatly appreciated!!!

Move any file you want to the other user to access to the Shared Folder. Anything you put in that folder is available to all users.

Best way to share files between users?

New to the Mac World and trying to set things up for all our users. We have 5 (2adults,3kids) and I'm keen to be able to share some files with other members of my family and would like to know the easiest way in doing this.
A couple of things to note;
- The two adults are the admin's
- Would like to share some photos between users (family photos are usually organised by my wife so I don't get to see them)
- I'd like to let my kids view some of my videos that I've downloaded but not all of them

Please try this first. If you want to share certain files between users like pictures or music or even documents, apple has provided an easy way to do so. The first step is to decide what to share. For this example I will do pictures. Open up Finder and go to the Macintosh HD, then click on "Users". Here you will see a list of the users. Your account will look like a house instead of a folder because it is the account in use. Click on your account and then right click (secondary click) on the pictures folder.
NOTE: From this point on you can do the same thing to any folder, such as music, documents, etc. or any file, such as a specific document in your documents folder. But I will keep explaining pictures.
After right clicking on the pictures folder, a new window will open up. Near the bottom you will see "Sharing & Permissions:" This is where you decide which users can access your folders/files and whether they can just read them or read and write them. For example, if you want your wife and kids to have access to your iphoto library, just press the "+" button and add each one of them. Under "Privilege" you had better give your wife the ability to "Read & Write" or you may get in trouble . By doing this, any pictures she adds, deletes, or edits will be added, deleted, or edited in your iphoto too (and vice versa). Lets say you don't want your kids to have editing abilities, then you just give them the "Read Only" privilege. They can look at all the pictures, but they cannot change, add, or delete them.
When your wife opens iPhoto for the first time, it will ask which library she wants to use. (If not, you can do it through the menu bar). Make sure you choose the iPhoto library under YOUR user account, not your wife's (it's empty). It will no longer have a little red minus sign next to it. That is the last time it will ask. Every time your wife opens her iPhoto, it will use that library. Same for the kiddos.
Again, you can do this with any folder or file. This is how Apple intended users to share content without duplicating files or using external hard drives. This way each user has their own icloud account but can access the families shared content.

How can I share iPhoto library between users on same mac. External hard drive has not worked.

I need to share and edit photos between users on one mac. I have tried sharing the file on an external drive but this has caused all sorts of problems with photos disappearing and/or not being able to be edited. I was hoping iCloud sharing or family would work but being on the same machine I need the main iCloud account active at all times. This is a workplace so the second user has minimal access permissions.

okay I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but i just imitated the same scenario on my mac and it seems to work fine. I made sure to change permissions of the shared folder AND the the actual photo library. I gave everyone access to everything (as far as the folder & library was concerned). I uploaded & viewed from both accounts. You might want to view permissions of your entire disk in disk utility to make sure there isn't an error.. Make a backup first though.
The permissions will not stick. Earlier iPhoto versions did allow this, because iPhoto did not write to an iPhoto Library if you only wanted to browse it, but with iPhoto '11 the behaviour changed. Opening an iPhoto Library from a different account will write files with changed ownership right into the library, and that will cause problems if you edit or tag photos from a second account. Shouldn't the System property "user.home" reference to that directory on windows? So if you call System.getProperty("user.home");, I think it should return that path at least up to <User Name>. I never really tried it on Windows though.

The only way is to create separate accounts under either AIM or Jabber (for example Googletalk). Then everybody logs into iChat with a different user and you can have full iChat functionality (except encryption which works only if you have different .mac accounts). If some members of your family have already a gmail/googlemail account then they can use this account information to log into iChat if you create a Jabber account with the gmail user information. Otherwise go to www.aim.com, request a screen name and use this user information to create an AIM account in iChat.

I would like to use FireWire to move files between 2 iBook G3's.

I would like to use FireWire to move files between 2 iBook G3's but the disk icon for the target disk computer does not show on the other. I've tried using 3 different iBooks and 2 different Firewire cables. Are there any other settings I should use? Any ideas?

Check the settings in the General tab of the Finder's preferences, and whether or not the drive appears in the Disk Utility.
