How to move files from external drive to main drive WITH keywords?

On a recent trip, I uploaded several thousand images onto an external hardrive that I was using with my laptop.I keyworded and edited these files while on the road.
Back home, I want to move the files (keywords and all) to my permanent LR library which resides on a different hard drive. How can I make this transfer without losing keywords?
Thank you in advance.

Hi Jessica,
There seems to be a confusion of terms here: the catalog is where LR stores all its information (what your referred to as LR's library in your original post).
While you were on the road, did you use LR to add keywords to the photos, or did you use some other tool? If you used LR, than you already have a catalog on the laptop, which you can then import into your main LR catalog (using the Import from Catalog option from the File menu). Let us know if you get stuck anywhere.

  • How do I move files from external drive to Itunes on computer?

    I am doing a system recovery and have saved my Itunes folder on an external drive.  How do I get the data back into Itunes?

    Install iTunes, the same version you had when you saved your music folder.
    When done, don't run iTunes.
    Copy the content of your itunes folder (iTunes Media, iTunes library...) from your external HD to /user/music/itunes
    Run iTunes. You should see your content and playlists.
    Bye

  • How do I restore from external drive, with outdated back-up  software?

    I mistakenly kept using my LaCie external drive's Silver keeper softerware after upgrading my Mac OS. My SilverKeeper version is 1.1.2, which I now know is incompatible with my Mac 10.4.6. (Maybe that is why I got an error report when I
    ran the Mac diagnostic disk on the LaCie.) In any event, after suffering a major crash (Kernal attack, and resulting reformat of the hard drive), I am wondering how to attempt a restore from the LaCie. Should I try it with the software that actually created the LaCie back up that I have; or should I reinstall the appropriate version of SilverKeeper first?
    I have been plugging along with some CD back-ups of the LaCie, but this is quite frustrating since it has to be done manually. Is it possible to download an upgrade to the back-up disk directly? And if so, would this really help matters?
    As you can see, I'm really a bit of an idiot about these matters; so any ANY help will be most appreciated.

    My own opinion is that you should install the later appropriate version of Silverkeeper. That said, I would in fact recommend if you can wait a few days for an answer, that you email the La Cie Silverkeeper backup team via the email link on the site at http://www.lacie.com/silverkeeper/
    They are careful to say they are not officially providing a backup service, but when I emailed them with a query regarding usage about a year ago after downloading Silverkeeper for myself, I got a reply within a couple of days that cleared up my question.

  • Retrieve iPhoto files from external drive with Time Machine

    I can retrieve all other files with Time Machine (including photos in Pictures) but not my iPhoto pics. Have read a few suggestions but having trouble following.
    Thanks in anticipation, Ernest.

    If you are trying to restore individual photos saved in iPhoto, you cannot do that. Instead, you need to restore the whole iPhoto library.
    To prevent the lose of the most recent photos, go to the folder where you have got your iPhoto library (by default, Pictures) and copy it to another folder. Then, in that folder, open the Time Machine app (in /Applications/Utilities), navigate through your backups and restore the iPhoto library you need

    Best way to move files to external drive in LR 5. Drag and drop or export, if drag and drop can I put all the dated folders into one single folder

    Drag and drop should do the job. Or move the files (or folders) in your operating system and then re-link via http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm
    Yes, you can put all the dated folders into a single folder (but if you plan to do this, then don't try move the files using your operating system and re-link)
    Export most definitely isn't the solution.

    It's likely that the drive is malfunctioning or that there is an internal hardware fault, but to confirm, see below.
    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • How to move files from one folder to another folder in webdynpro java for sap portal

    Dear Experts,
    I wan to move files from one folder to another folder in SAP portal 7.3 programmatically in webdynpro java.
    My requirement is in my portal 1000 transport packages is their. Now i want to move 1 to 200 TP's into Archive folder.
    Can you please help me how to do in through portal or wd java ...
    Regards

    Hello,
    Do you know what the difference between copying a file this way :
    ** Fast & simple file copy. */
    public static void copy(File source, File dest) throws IOException {
    FileChannel in = null, out = null;
    try {
    in = new FileInputStream(source).getChannel();
    out = new FileOutputStream(dest).getChannel();
    long size = in.size();
    MappedByteBuffer buf = in.map(FileChannel.MapMode.READ_ONLY, 0, size);
    out.write(buf);
    } finally {
    if (in != null) in.close();
    if (out != null) out.close();
    ================SECOND WAY============
    AND THIS WAY:
    // Move file (src) to File/directory dest.
    public static synchronized void move(File src, File dest) throws FileNotFoundException, IOException {
    copy(src, dest);
    src.delete();
    // Copy file (src) to File/directory dest.
    public static synchronized void copy(File src, File dest) throws IOException {
    InputStream in = new FileInputStream(src);
    OutputStream out = new FileOutputStream(dest);
    // Transfer bytes from in to out
    byte[] buf = new byte[1024];
    int len;
    while ((len = in.read(buf)) > 0) {
    out.write(buf, 0, len);
    in.close();
    out.close();
    And which is better? I read up on what each kind of does but still a bit unclear as to when it is good to use which.
    Thanks in advance,
    JavaGirl

I posted tho same message as a 'Reply' to the Leone/Diane posts but then was worried it would not show up since that was some time ago so I decided I should post it as new.  Apologies if it comes through twice.   I am having trouble as indicated below:
    I found this response to the question about Aperture and external hard drives from last May.  I bought a WD My Book 4TB and need to back up photos I have in Aperture (many!) to free up space.  I am a photographer and need to be able to plug the external drive in as needed, pull a photo out from the WD and back into Aperture to work on it if needed.
    I read your directions to Diane and have the external drive formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  I read the two ways you suggest to move part or all of my library to an external drive and still be able to use it in Aperture with all the metadata saved, as I need to continue to work with the images.  I am not completely clear about the advantage of the 'referenced' method but decided to go with the Split Library because it sounded like the Referenced method would still keep originals (and take space) in Aperture.  I'm not sure about this, but that was what I chose.
    I have backed up my computer, formatted the drive then went to Aperture to begin.  I do the 'Export' and it shows the external drive it will go to but when I click 'OK', it says "EXPORT LIBRARY FAILED - Library could not be create because the file system of the destination volume is not supported."  I doubled checked to be sure the drive was Journaled which it was.  I did call WD and talk to them but they told me this was outside their area.
    Also, in Aperture, I have my photos in Projects by yymmdd.  Is it possible to transfer Projects into the ext. drive without having to break them out of the Projects?
    Any direction anyone might give would be greatly appreciated, Sandy

    Hi Sandy,
    I suggest taking a week or two to get to know Aperture better before proceeding.  Aperture can do many things, and can do what you want.  It's important to be specific about what you want, however.  From what you've said, it appears that you don't yet know.

    [1] A back-up is a copy of digital files stores on a separate device.  A back-up is recommended because drives fail, and humans make mistakes.  A back-up is not used to free up storage space.
    [2] Aperture can be set up in many equally-usable ways.  The program files reside (almost always) on your system drive.  The data files can be anywhere you want them, as long as they are on locally-mounted drive(s).  The main data file is your Library.  The best place for it is on the drive that has the fastest throughput to your logic board.  This is, in nearly 100% of machines, the system drive.  But Aperture functions well with Libraries of secondary drives — internal or external — with sufficient throughput.  USB-3 and Thunderbolt I (& II) provide sufficient throughput for using an Aperture Library on a secondary drive.
    Nearly all photographers will fill whatever storage space is available (making data is what photographers do).  The question is: what do you do when your Library no longer fits on your system drive?  (And remember, you should leave at least 10% (I recommend 20% for heavy users of Aperture) of your system drive free.)  The answer depends, primarily, on whether your computer is portable or fixed in location.
    If fixed, just buy a more-than-large-enough secondary drive of USB-3 or faster throughput, mount it permanently, and move (using Finder) your Library to it.
    If your computer is portable (and you can't increase the on-board storage), you have to select the best from several confusing alternatives:
    • Put your Library on an external drive with throughput at least as fast as USB-3
    — Pros:  Easy to maintain and back-up.
    — Cons:  Must have drive with you in order to use your Library.
    • Leave your Library on your system drive, but relocate your Images' Originals to an external drive.
    — Pros:  You can work on your Library without having the external drive available.
    — Cons:  You can't export (except Previews), Print, or make adjustments until your external drive is mounted.  Significantly more difficult to administer, especially importing and backing-up.
    • Leave your Library and and _some_ of your Images' Originals on your system drive, and relocate most of your Image's Originals to an external drive.
    — Pros: You can do any work on those Images whose Originals are stored in the Library regardless of where the external drive is.
    — Cons: Yet another level more difficult to administer.
    If you are comfortable with the administrative overhead, the third set-up will be the most rewarding.  Keep all _current_ Images Originals inside your Library, and routinely relocate the Originals of Images no longer current to the external drive.
    In no case is it recommended that you at any time remove from your Library an Image (not the Original — the Image in Aperture) that you expect to ever use again.

  • External Drive with Time Machine, booting from external drive with utilitie

    I'm using Time Machine now with
    a LaCie 1TB external hard drive.
    Everything works fine.
    But, I've been wondering:
    Can I place a program like TechTool
    on the external drive (that Time Machine uses)
    and boot from that external drive.
    I would like to be able to do that,
    because diagnostics and repair programs
    only works properly and fully when they run from
    external drives. Anything on the internal drive can be repaired
    and examine. Impossible to do if Techtool is on the same
    drive that's been examined.
    Any thoughts as to what I should do?
    Thanks
    iMac, Leopard, Time Machine, Lacie Quadra 1TB drive.
    P.S. Stupid question: If my computer crashes, and I reboot from Time Machine
    (from the external drive) how does the computer know which backup to take ?!?
    Isn't there many versions of the OS on the Time Machine backup taken at different times?

    As V.K. says, you can't boot from TM backups.
    But you can restore your entire system from any one of them, per the procedure in #14 of the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
    You can also selectively restore from them, while running normally. See #15 in the FAQ Tip.

  • How to move files from an external hard drive to a time capsule that is part of an extended network

    What are the steps for copying or transferring 235 GB of files (primarily .mts movie files) that are on a Western Digital external hard drive to a 500 GB Time Capsule that I want to use as an external hard drive?  After the files have been moved, I will be returning the Western Digital external hard drive to my son's coach and will be using iMovie to access the 500 GB Time Capsule to create a highlight video.
    Currently, I have a 1TB Time Capsule that is serving as the wireless router for my network and for Time Machine backups to two Macs.  The 500GB Time Capsule is set up as an extended part of the 1TB Time Capsule's network.
    I can copy and paste files from the Western Digital exernal hard drive to the Desktop of my iMac but when I try to move a file from the Western Digitial external hard drive to the empty 500 GB Time Capsule, the following error message pops up:
        "The item “filename” can’t be moved because “Linda's Time Capsule (2)” can’t be modified."
    Thank you.  Linda

    Click anywhere on the open desktop so that the Finder menus are displayed at the top of the screen.
    Click Go > Network
    Double click the Time Capsule icon, then double click the icon representing the drive to mount it on the Mac's desktop. It is named "Data" unless you have changed it
    You can drag/drop files to the "Data" icon on the desktop
    235 GB is going to take forever if you try to do this using wireless. If at all possible, connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule.
    Even using Ethernet, you are probably looking at 10-12 hours for the file transfer.  All bets are off with wireless only, but a guess would be several days....or even more.
