How to move files from mac to external drive

I need to free up storage on my macbook pro, I bought an external drive and have copied the files over.  Then in finder after transfer I moved the files to trash off of my MacBook.  However, when I check the storage it still shows the same amount of storage space taken up.  What are the steps after transferring files to external drive to clear storage on harddisk?

Slightly surprised this has been asked several times before - "More Like This" on the right.

    Drag and drop should work with the movie files.  Use these instructions for iPhoto library:

    Consider making a new library with the events you want or move the library and then edit it leaving the events you want to remain.

  • Transfer files from Mac formatted external drive to PC formatted drive

    i need to transfer quicktime files (that were captured from video with FCP) to a PC formatted external drive (for editing them in after effects on a PC). the files can be transfered by burning them on a DVD, but that will take a very long time and waste many DVDs because i have 60 GB of material... can this be done (without having to purchase expensive software)?

    thanx tom,
    first of, i like that you made the link appear as one word. how did you do that? it's really cool!
    i downloaded the program, but i'm not sure how to use it... reading the guide just made me more confused... if i understand correctly, it will automatically reformat ALL my files to NTFS-3G ones, which are not as stable... i'm a little scared to install it... though i may have totally misunderstood what it says. i see mostly black when i try to read these kind of things...
    anyone out there have experience with this program?

  • Transfer image files from Mac to external drive?

    Can someone please help.? I'm a newbie and want to transfer image frile to an external drive...

    Well, if you are not doing a complete back up of your system, you can simply drag images to an external drive - that will create a copy there and leave the original in place.

    The simplest method would be to drag & drop the files you want to move to the external drive using the Finder. Just open both the source and destination locations in separate Finder windows.

  • How do i back up files from mac to external harddrive

    how do I back up files from mac to external harddrive not using time machine?

    First format the external as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    Connect via Firewire.
    If it is just a few files or folders you want to back up you can just drag and drop. Or you can use SyncTwoFolders to keep the backups up to date.
    If you want to back up your entire start-up disk use SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner, both of which can make a bootable clone of your entire start-up drive.
    You can Google for the download sites of these applications, or search here:

    ok - since you'll be sharing it with a PC - connect it to your windows pc - then format from there - instead of NTFS format - choose exFAT.
    or, you can read the link below on how to do it in dos mode.
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/how-can-i-forma t-external-drive-in-exfat-not-in/0f6bf19a-19d6-4470-ae05-53ddf26bb476?msgId=1860 eae3-3488-4eea-8326-f87b89d9851b
    once you've formatted it - you can now use it in both your macbook and windows computer.

  • How to transfer files from mac to ipad without using itunes

    how to transfer files from mac to ipad without using itunes ???
    as i want to use my ipad for official use as well...please suggest..

    well to be 100% technical, no you didn't but that aside, it good to know there are ways for people to transfer music into the default apps without iTunes, if they have a need.
    I tend to use 3rd party apps for documents, like your mentioned iExplorer etc, which are handy.
    I see from a search the two "apps" you mentioned are not iOS apps, which I had assumed, SyncPod and FreeSync are apps for your computer, that would explain their access to the default Music/Video apps.
    I had wondered how Apple had allowed iOS apps in the store that could get around the sandboxing in iOS of apps.

  • How to move iTunes from Mac to PC (via external drive)

    I would like to copy my iTunes library from my home iMac to a PC laptop (I know, don't ask, it's a work tool)
    - without clogging that work PC with all the music data, so I am thinking external drive.
    Here are my questions:
    first, how do I need to format that drive? MS-DOS (FAT) or else? (just purchased a LaCie mobile drive)
    second, what do I do, back up from within iTunes  or just move MyMusic folder over to external drive?
    Any help is highly appreciated, first week on PC here!

    Format the drive MS-DOS.
    Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from the iMac to the external.
    Plug the external into the Windows computer.
    Hold Shift and launch iTunes.
    Select Choose library.
    Select the iTunes folder on the external.
    That is all you need to do.

    Hello,
    Do you know what the difference between copying a file this way :
    ** Fast & simple file copy. */
    public static void copy(File source, File dest) throws IOException {
    FileChannel in = null, out = null;
    try {
    in = new FileInputStream(source).getChannel();
    out = new FileOutputStream(dest).getChannel();
    long size = in.size();
    MappedByteBuffer buf = in.map(FileChannel.MapMode.READ_ONLY, 0, size);
    out.write(buf);
    } finally {
    if (in != null) in.close();
    if (out != null) out.close();
    ================SECOND WAY============
    AND THIS WAY:
    // Move file (src) to File/directory dest.
    public static synchronized void move(File src, File dest) throws FileNotFoundException, IOException {
    copy(src, dest);
    src.delete();
    // Copy file (src) to File/directory dest.
    public static synchronized void copy(File src, File dest) throws IOException {
    InputStream in = new FileInputStream(src);
    OutputStream out = new FileOutputStream(dest);
    // Transfer bytes from in to out
    byte[] buf = new byte[1024];
    int len;
    while ((len = in.read(buf)) > 0) {
    out.write(buf, 0, len);
    in.close();
    out.close();
    And which is better? I read up on what each kind of does but still a bit unclear as to when it is good to use which.
    Thanks in advance,
    JavaGirl

  • I cannot open a .mov file from MAC on a PC

    I have a Mac Dual G5 with Mac Os X 10.4.8 and I was making a short HDV movie(only 4Giga) in FCExpress.
    I export the movie in H264 1920 X1080 in the QT Conversion window and save them in a .mov file (with blue QT label).
    After saving I can open and view the movie with the Mac, no problem.
    I make a copy on a DVD for mine friend.
    I will open the movie on his PC but it don't work.
    He had a Pentium Dual 840 3.2 Ghz Window XP Pro service pack 1 and 2, 2wDirectx9 2 giga Ram 256 nVidia Ge Force 6800
    On the PC we install also Quick Time Pro 7.1 for Windows with register number.
    When we activate the .mov file on the PC(.mov file from the Mac) we see the Quick Time window in black or white without image.
    We try many times but we cannot find a solution..
    To day we buy by the Apple Store QT MPEG 2-Playback Component for PC.
    After installation we have every time the same problem, no image in the QT windown.
    What can I do?
    Thanks for assistance

    Dear Sir
    I find a solution for the problem.
    What you say is correct, it is a codex problem.
    I download a other program Cineform Aspect HD.199 U$.
    Now I can open easy everyone .mov file on the PC(.mov files from the MAC).
    Mine conclusion: QuickTime Pro for Windows don’t support H264 codex,
    and don’t support any .mov file from the MAC !
    Apple make big publicity on their website for QT Pro 7 for Windowns.
    They say “QT Pro 7 for Windows support H264 codex”.
    I try many days with Apple Support team, they don’t find a solution.
    Good evening and thank you for assistance,
    Rudy

  • How to recover data from non-mounting external drive?

    OK- here is the pinch:
    I have a Western Digital My Book 500GB Studio Edition which, though visible in Disk Utility, fails to mount, even when I try to do so via Disk Utility.  I have tried all the usual- unplugged, repowered-up, changed the order of Mac to external drive power-up/plug in etc etc.  It will not mount, end of.
    Then I changed the housing, in case the issue was with that.  No change.
    Then I had a friend use his PC's software to recover the data and he pulled off what appears to be ALL of it (it was close on being the 500GB as the drive was full) but it is not usuable and the Final Cut Pro and iMovie files I am needing to recover, appear to have been "downgraded" to MPEGs and MP4s (how IS that even possible?!) with a few MOVs of which the bulk are unreadable.  Oddly the clips are transitions only- no full three and a half minute (most of them are of music, songs of about that length) clips ever.
    So- is there any chance that I can get software which will let me recover the content of the drive in a format which my MacBook Pro can use/understand?  Or is it a lost cause?
    I had done some research on the topic here and found one thread which mentioned accessing the drive via the "Terminal" (sounds wonderful, if I knew what it was and how to use it) and correcting a read and write setting, copying its content over to the hard drive (well- that is not possible as I have a smaller internal than that drive is but no never mind) and getting the non-mounting drive to once more mount.
    Could that ^ be something worth pursuing?  I cannot ask on the thread as it is from 2006 and, obviously, archived.
    Hoping for some good news but am resigned almost.
    Thank you for reading!

    Did you try using a powered USB hub?
    Mac's now cut off port powered drives if they draw too much current.
    The external drive is a powered SATA, currently residing in a powered SATA to USB housing, no extensions.  No, the drive is actually just not supported anymore and was not mountable before.
    Also use the Mac version of Data Rescue for file recovery, it knows the Mac file formats better than PC file format recovery.
    I cannot recover anything with a Mac because the Mac will not read it.  It is not supported due to something my friend did with his PC:
    This is only since he had a go at recovery.  Before then it was supported and appeared fine- just not mountable.
    Obviously what happened is it took the MPEG portions of the Mac files as it understood that and discarded the rest.
    Yes, I gathered that and explained as much to him.  It discarded the entire 120GB FCPro project file I kind of would like to recover.
    Not sure what now...
    You had mentioned cloning/imaging etc. which you edited out.  Could that be something which can be done with a PC (I am not a PC user but I guess I could have a go) and then I use said image on the Mac to copy the bits I need to transfer to the Mac-formatted storage device?  Or- with a different Mac?  Not sure why that would make a difference but I am happy to try anything!
    Thank you to you both christopher rigby1 and ds store- means a lot not to be completely up the creek without a paddle.  I just wish that I had not been overwhelmed by the offer of assistance from a PC user and had had more of a go myself.  I suspect it would not be this difficult now.
