How to move iphone/ipad backups to a new macbook

I currently have a macbook (2009), on which I backup my iphone, my ipad and my wife's ipad. I bought a new macbook, and want to make my iphone and ipad backups on my new macbook, but leave my wife's ipad backups on the old macbook. Please advise on the best way to achieve this.

Use Time Machine and backup the original MacBook to an external HDD. Then go to the new MacBook and use Time Machine to restore the personal data. See this Apple KB article for more information: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427

I just bought a new Macbook Pro.  How do I transfer my Ipad contacts to my new Macbook Pro?

    One way is via iCloud.
With both using the same Apple ID:
On the iPad: Settings > iCloud > Contacts on
On the Mac: Apple Menu > System Preferences > iCloud > Contacts on

  • How do you recover your backup to a new MacBook?

Okay, so now my TC is connected and I have this great backup going on. I am mainly using this as a full machine backup and not really as an individual file recovery tool (its a nice bonus, but not a frequent need of mine). So, if my MacBook does crash, or get damaged or stolen, how would I actually use this TC backup?
I would likely buy a new MacBook (different processor) or a MacBook Air. Can I recover my entire HD structure to a new computer? Does it somehow recover everything but system files so I don't corrupt the OS? (the low level peripheral support would be different for a new machine).
Wondering if on a new machine the iTunes and iPhoto (my two heavy use applications) will recover effortlessly or if I'll be struggling to get those back up.
Figured it is good to ask now. Before it happens!
    Thanks!

Wow. That is a great article gglockner, thanks much for sharing it.
It addresses a real concern of mine which is that when I bought my MacBook, I was only able to get the 80GB hard drive...which is quickly filling up with myPhoto images. So, according to the article, I can just pop in a new hard drive, format it, and restore from my TC. That is a HUGE relief if it really works! (and if not, I'd have my old hard drive that I can put back in anyway) +While we're on this tangent, any idea what type of hard drive I should buy for my MacBook if I decide to upgrade its capacity?+
However, my initial question is still not addressed. What if I have to buy new hardware. The processor and some components will certainly be different on a newer MacBook then mine, or maybe even if I splurged for an Air or Pro. Can I restore to a new machine all together? (which is the MOST LIKELY scenario if my MacBook were to get stolen while traveling, for instance)
    Thanks!

  • How to move iMovie 08 files to my new MacBook?

Would anyone happen to know how I can move my iMovie 08 projects from my old Macbook pro to my brand new MacBook Pro?
(And my iPhoto files, too, for that matter!)
    Thanks-

On the iMac - Turn on Personal File Sharing
On the MacBook - In the Finder, click on "Go", then "Connect to Server...", then type in the address of the iMac (you can find this at the bottom of the "Personal File Sharing" window on the iMac).
Click on "Connect" and enter your account name and password for the iMac.
You should get a list of available items to access, at a minimum your home directory (you don't have to use the Public shared folder). If you use Admin credentials, you can mount the hard drive and access the programs you have on the iMac and run them from the MacBook - not all programs will work this way but most of the ones I use work.

  • How do I use Apple Backup with my new MacBook Pro?

I've been using Apple's Backup app from the old days of Mobile Me (remember when we had to pay to use Apple's cloud?). I've just bought a MacBook Pro and I transferred everything from my old iMac (early 2008 running Mavericks). Everything works fine, but my copy of Backup has reverted to demo mode, restricting me to just 100 MB per backup. It tells me that in 60 days, I will lose even that.
How do I transfer over my permissions to use this app?
    Thanks!

If you have everything on your new machine, set up an iCloud account. System preferences/iCloud.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4847
You may want to buy an external drive (they are cheap these days) and set up Time Machine on it.

  • How can I take my iPhone & iPad backups from my iMac at home with me while travelling using my Macbookair (128Gb SSD) with an ext. HD?

How can I take my iPhone & iPad backups from my iMac at home with me while travelling using my Macbookair (128Gb SSD) with an ext. HD? I want to continue to back up my devices including those of my wife while travelling without using the cloud and not returing home for several weeks.
    Any ideas or solutions?
    Thanks for your help.

You can use any Mac with a recent copy of iTunes to back up an iPhone or iPad. It doesn't have to be the one you usually synch with, so long as you don't let it try to do a synch.
Just take fresh backups on the MBA. As for how to get the backups onto the external drive, I'll have to leave that to others; I've never tried.

  • How do i transfer ipad backup to another computer

I'm having a new Mac soon to replace the current windows computer now. I have been syncing my iPad with this computer and wonder if I can transfer my iPad Backup to the new Mac so I can sync my ipad with it. Anyone has an idea?

This article is pretty easy to follow and contains the steps needed to transfer your iPad content to the new computer.

If you want to just transfer the iPad backup to new computer here is where it is located.
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
The information is from this article

This thread also discusses how to move the iPad content to another computer.

    Thanks Eric,
After inserting the original DVD I installed OSX and after reboot I had a working computer.
There was no opportunity to restore the TM backup. however when I rebooted from the
DVD again I saw that possibility from a menu of the install utility.
I ran through the restore over night (8 hours) and when I woke up, I had my computer back!
    Thanks for helping me out.

I updated to IOS 8 but my C drive is out of space i couldn't restore my data back; how could move itunes with backup to another drive
    or what could i do

There are two solutions . . . I run my iTunes Library off an external hard drive. However, this may limit the portability of your library. Though a La Cie Rugged external would help with that (I love mine, though I use it for diagnostics and repair, not for iTunes--but it does get around).
You can also upgrade your hard drive as was previously suggested. I've bought my recent hardware from: http://www.powerbookmedic.com
They have lots of parts and great manuals!
    Good luck!

How can I sync my iPad 2 with my new MacBook Pro when it is already synced with my old MacBook? I am getting a message on the new MacBook Pro that says I am not allowed to sync the iPad 2 because it is synced to another iTunes library.

    1) ensure iTunes is authorized for your iTunes store account(s)
    2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPad but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPad with it.
above works for purchases from the iTunes store. for everything else, check out this post by Zevoneer.
