How to move iTunes from a PC to a MAC when files are in a network drive

Warning! This is my first experience with a MAC!!!
All right, I am one of those guys who has been working with PCs since the beginning of times, but my wife finally convinced me to try a MAC. So far, so good (all right, I admit it...I kind of like it...) but I need some help with my Itunes library.
I had itunes setup in a network drive when using my PC. The Network drive and folder were Z:\Music\iTunes.
I want to use iTunes with my MAC now. I do not want to change the location of the files in my external drive.
I have managed to view the external hard drive folders with the MAC. However, the name of the folder is different "WORKGROUP;WD-NETCENTER/music/iTunes" when I look at the folder info.
What do I need to do to make this work?
Thanks in advance!

Move the iTunes library to a shared area and then into the desired location. If this isn’t the default one, launch iTunes with the Shift key held down and choose that library.

  • How to prevent itunes from automatically adding tunes to library?  These are tunes I select to play, but itunes inserts them in the library and then I have to go delete them.

If I select a tune to listen to, it opens in itunes and itunes adds it to the library.  I would like to stop itunes from doing this, but I can't find a control to do this or to let me make quicktime be the default player.  So I am constantly deleting stuff that it adds, PIA!

=Changing the application used to open all files of a certain kind=
    1) In a Finder window highlight a file of the kind you want to change the application to open that kind of file.
    2) While that file is highlighted, select File > Get Info or press command (apple or propeller icon) + i to get a file information window.
    3) In the lower part of the info window there is an "open with" menu with a list of applications.
    4) If your application is already in the box then it is the default application for opening that kind of file and you don't need to do anything more.  Close the get info window.
    5) If the application showing in the menu is not the one with which you wish to open the file then select a new application. If your application does not appear there then select the "other..." and track down the application (usually in the Applications folder at the main level of the computer).
    6) If you wish to change all files of this type to open with this application in future, make sure the "change all" button is selected.
    7) Close the get info window.
To open a file one time with an application, right click the file and Open With.

  • How to move iTunes from Mac to PC (via external drive)

I would like to copy my iTunes library from my home iMac to a PC laptop (I know, don't ask, it's a work tool)
    - without clogging that work PC with all the music data, so I am thinking external drive.
    Here are my questions:
first, how do I need to format that drive? MS-DOS (FAT) or else? (just purchased a LaCie mobile drive)
second, what do I do, back up from within iTunes  or just move MyMusic folder over to external drive?
Any help is highly appreciated, first week on PC here!

    Format the drive MS-DOS.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from the iMac to the external.
Plug the external into the Windows computer.
    Hold Shift and launch iTunes.
    Select Choose library.
Select the iTunes folder on the external.
That is all you need to do.

  • How to consolidate iTunes from MAC & PC on to a NAS box?

    === Background ===
I've got 2 MACs & 2 PCs (WinXP) and I want to get the iTunes data consolidated to the network.
I've got iTunes data (including purchased songs) on both MACs and 1 PC.
MACs have iTunes 8.02. PC has iTunes 7.4.3.1 (but I can upgrade if that helps).
All purchased songs have DRM and were bought using the same Apple ID.
All the machines are on the same 10/100 network.
I have a NAS box (BuffaloTech) that can be viewed from each machine.
    === Challenge ===
I'd like to move all the iTunes content to the NAS box so that:
    - all songs/playlists, etc are in 1 place
    - I can use iTunes on any machine MAC/PC to see/play the same libraries
    - I can use iTunes from any machine to buy/add more songs to the libraries
    === Questions ===
    How hard is all this?
Does the answer get more complex if some of the MACs have multiple accounts?
I'd like each account to be able to see all the songs.
I've read about moving iTunes to an external drive. I figure I can use the same process
to move iTunes from one machine to the NAS. I wasn't able to see much about merger the other iTunes libraries in with the first. Should I do this through my iPhone/USB rather than through the network 10/100?
Once I have the iTunes setup/consolidated on the NAS, how to I get the iTunes on each machine
to use the data on the NAS. Will I run into issues (e.g. file locking) when more than one machine uses the iTunes database at the same time?
What should I watch out for?
Any recommendations regarding this sort of configuration?
    Thanks for any advice,
    -Dave

    Hey u2sweetestallie,
Thanks for the question and detailed information. If your backup drive (in your example, drive A) included the iTunes Library files, you can open the library by following these steps:
iTunes: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589
If the hard drive did not include the iTunes Library files, but instead just the music, you may wish to re-link or re-import the music:

  • How to Move iTunes Library on an External Drive to Another Computer

How do you move your iTunes library (including all your playlists) if your iTunes media files—movies, TV shows, music, etc.—are housed on an external drive, rather than the local drive on your computer?
The usual advice concerns copying media files from one computer to the next, e.g.:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
But if your media is on an external device, you don’t want to copy it, just access it from a new device. You could plug the drive into your new computer and drag the media into iTunes, but then you would lose your playlists and other information.
Fortunately, you can transfer an entire iTunes Library using the Export/Import function. The essential information is found in an Apple support document, “iTunes: How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists”:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451
Using this information, we can create a procedure for transferring both the media files that are on an external drive and the iTunes Library that goes with it.
    Here is the procedure:
    1. On the old computer, Export the playlist, using File > Library > Export Library. Transfer the resulting file to the new computer.
    2. You might want to note the number of music files, TV shows, etc. you have on the old system. Select View > Show Status Bar, then choose the “List” view, and this information will be shown at the bottom of the iTunes window. Also disable sharing, etc.; you may want to deauthorize the computer as well.
    3. Close iTunes on the old computer, dismount and disconnect the external drive(s). (Yes, this will work with media on multiple drives).
    4. On the new computer, close iTunes and delete “iTunes Library.itl” in the iTunes folder.
    5. On the new computer, Connect and mount the external drive(s).
    6. Open iTunes on the new computer. Choose Preferences > Advanced. Deselect (uncheck) both “Keep iTunes Media Organized” (because it’s already organized on your external drive, right?) and “Copy files to iTunes Media folder” (because the files are on the external drive). Then set your iTunes Media folder location to your media folder on the external drive and click on “OK”. (Note: don’t close iTunes after this step, because it will automatically reset your media folder to your local machine rather than the external drive).
    7. Choose File > Library > Import Playlist and choose the file you exported from the old computer. This will import all the media you had on the old system into iTunes (no need to manually move anything from the external drive). The import will probably take some time.  (If you see that iTunes is copying files, you probably messed up Step 6; you can stop it and go back to Step 4 without harm).
    8. After the import, you can check the numbers you noted in Step 2; if there is a discrepancy that bothers you, check out the scripts “Music Folder Files Not Added” “List MIAs” and at http://dougscripts.com/itunes/.
    9. When everything is satisfactory, you can recheck “Keep iTunes Media Organized” and “Copy files to iTunes Media folder” in Preferences.
    10. You may now want to enable sharing, sync iOS devices, etc. Also be sure to set up your backup strategies on the new machine (you *do* have backups of your external drive(s), right?). If you already had some media on your new computer and you want to incorporate it into the external drive, choose File > Library > Consolidate.
    11. Oddities:
    * iTunes Extras must be manually imported.
    * Some of my movies & TV shows imported as “Home Video”.
    * Mobile applications did not import (presumably because no iOS device was synced).
    * Books that were once handled by iTunes are now handled by iBooks and will not import (to let iTunes see them again, you’ll need to add them manually to iBooks, then choose File > Move Books from iTunes). Audiobooks import okay, but you may have to authorize your Audible account.

    Or:
Copy the iTunes folder from the old computer to the same location in your user area on the new one.  Attach the external drive and start iTunes.  If you have put it in your Home > Music folder the application will automatically know to look for it there and becausse you are using the same library it will be configured to look for media on the external drive.

    Thanks for your reply.
I went to this page on the Apple Support site: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364
I followed its instructions and it didn't work. I tried it 5 or 6 times and then i took my PC to a shop and they tried it 5 or 6 times which cost me a fortune - and i still can't get it to work.
I've checked my iTunes preferences as you said and it is set to this:
    D:\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music
I've checked both folders and i've noticed both have the same information in them ie: C>USERS>CHRISMAY>MYMUSIC>iTUNES has exactly the same in it as D>MYDOCUMENTS>MYMUSIC>iTUNES - So there's a Library.xml file in each folder and a Library.itl file in each folder and an Album Artwork file in each folder etc etc. So in effect the both iTunes folders have exactly the same files in them apart from the 'iTunes Music' folder which is only located on the D Drive as this is where i want all the music to be stored.
The reason for that was that i could only get iTunes to work with my original library by copying everything from my external back up onto the C Drive. So i don't know if having duplicate folders in both iTunes folders on the C & D drive's will be causing any of the problems or not ??
Is there any chance you know why my iTunes is working on my PC and allowing me to upload music to it but it won't let my 2x iPod's or my iPhone sync with it ? If so are there any solutions i could try before i smash them all up in a fit of rage or all my hair falls out?
    Hope you can help................

  • Followed cnet direct. to move itunes from c drive to ext. drive, worked, deleted off c, still worked, now says AVFoundationCF.dll not found-reinstall, don't want to lose data

I recently followed cnet directions to move itunes from c drive on pc running xp pro, to external drive, for space reasons.  Process worked.  I tunes ran from e drive, verified data on e drive, deleted all apple applications on c drive so I could remove itunes and recover space.  Verified itunes still worked off of new short cut and and that target was e drive.  Now itunes won't open and get message "AVFoundationCF.dll not found - reinstall", or "not installed correctly Error 7 (windows error 126) - reinstall."  Tried download, install from apple.com for itunes on c drive, but message "library can't be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes."  How do I fix this without losing all of our "material" saved on the itunes program?

Thank you for the reply, but so far no go.  I tried through control panel and add remove programs with repair option as suggested but got error..."C:\programs......AppleAplicationSupport.msi cannot be found."  This was after I have done new download and install of itunes to the c drive.  I have not taken any steps to try use that down load or reload any material on it.  I changed path to external drive an folder, E:\ itunes and got the "error not valid installation package."  Still looking for answers...
