How to move iTunes Music Library from an external HD to another?

Yesterday I tried to move all my music from an external HD to a new bigger one.
Well, I encountered various problems, the most important one is that the “iTunes Music Library” file messed up.
I transferred all files and both “iTunes Music Library.xml” and the “iTunes Library” file in the new HD. I have to say that I didn't know so much about those two files and I thought that it was enough to move them in the new location; I discovered that those files included the information about where the music is located (among other infos), so it still redirects to the older HD.
However, now I’m trying to recreate the previous situation on the older HD, and I’m trying to “rebuild” the iTunes Library (I have a back-up of the xml file, even if it is not the running one).
This operation is very important for me because about two years ago I used (for a long time )an earlier version of iTunes that had a bug: even if wrote all the tag infos on an a mp3, the “artist name” and “album name” tags didn’t remained. But I still can see all the informations through the iTunes browser (thanks to the iTunes Music Library DB). So, I cannot recreate it from zero. I absolutely need to export the existing “iTunes Music Library” to the new HD, or at least to use the existing “iTunes Music Library”, leaving it where it already is and moving only the “iTunes Music folder” (even if I don’t want to use two external HDs, the older one holding the existing “iTunes Music Library” e “iTunes Library” files and the newer one holding the “itunes Music” folder I moved!).
As far as you know how can I move safely “iTunes Music Library” e “iTunes Library” files on the new HD applying them to the new “iTunes Music” folder??
I really need your help!
This article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307074 didn’t help.

Sorry, I wasn't responding to you, just the original poster. I didn't look at the date on that posting and didn't realize that you'd added a post that wasn't quite the same problem. In future, you'll find you get better answers if you start your own thread. You're issue really is a bit more complicated.
If iTunes currently recognizes all the music on both internal and the external drives, it should work. You have to make sure that both drives (old and new) are mounted. Make sure you have both "Keep iTunes music organized" (you probably already do) and "Copy files to iTunes..." (you probably don't) checked.
If not all of the music is currently in your iTunes library, perform the procedure with the music that is a part of the library and add the other stuff afterwards.
Best of luck.

  • How to move itunes music library from an old to new NAS?

I'm moving to a larger LaCie NAS and need to move my existing iTunes music files from the old LaCie to the new LaCie. My iTunes library files are on my mini, but the music files are on the NAS.
    I have 2 questions:
    1. Since I'm making this move, can I move all my iTunes files to the NAS (the whole iTunes folder in my user folder - library file, apps, artwork, etc.)? Are there advantages / disadvantages to this (e.g. for sharing with other MACs in the house)? (Currently only my music files are on the NAS - everything else is on the mini.)
    2. What is the best way to make this move? I assume I could copy the files manually, I could use iTunes organize / consolidate functions to do this, or maybe there are other options. I'm not exactly sure how to do any of the options...
    Thank you!

  • How to Move Music Library from one external HD to another

I had about 60GB of music on an external hard drive, nicely organized and "linked to" from iTunes (just upgraded to version 5). I recently purchased a larger external hard drive and basically copied the contents of my older external drive to the new one, preserving all folder structures from the root of the drives down (but the name of the drive itself is different.) I was hoping I could just do a search/replace of the "iTunes Music Library.xml" file in my Music/iTunes folder, to replace the name of the old drive (volume) with the new one. I did, and iTunes launches fine, preserving my playlists, song ratings, etc... but whenever I try to play any of the songs, it says it can't find it (I can manually point iTunes to it, but I don't want to do that for 15,000 songs...) Strange thing, though, is that if I quit out of iTunes and re-open the Library XML file, all the paths have been reset to their original location!! What am I missing? Thanks in advance,
    Jesse

I just want to add that the iTunes folder (with the library xml file and such) is on my local hard drive, in the typical Music/iTunes location. I don't want to simply re-import the songs 'cuz I'd lose playlist contents and ratings, and I don't want to "consolidate" the library because I want to keep my music folders and filenames as I currently have them. Basically, I just want iTunes to realize the songs have simply changed location from one external drive to another... thanks again.

  • How to move Startup Disk clone from one external drive to another?

I thought this would be a question easily answered on the WWW and easily found via search engines, but so far no luck, hence this question.
Prior to upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion I followed some very good instructions from Tom Nelson on ask.com (http://macs.about.com/od/backupsarchives/ss/diskbackup.htm) related to using Disk Utility to clone my internal Macintosh HD drive to an external hard drive, making it a bootable drive.  I cloned to a very nice LaCie external FW drive that had far more room than that needed for the clone.  This drive booted just fine as a startup disk, so mission accomplished:   I have now a bootable clone of my Lion system prior to upgrading to Mountain Lion.
The upgrade to Mountain Lion went well, and now, before I put any additional apps or much additional data on the original internal  Macintosh HD drive, I want to use Disk Utility again to clone the drive so I'll have a snapshot of the system right after the upgrade to Mountain Lion.
    Questions:
Is there any way to use the same LaCie drive that now holds the Lion startup disk clone to hold the yet-to-be-done Mountain Lion startup disk clone?
If not, how can I move the Lion startup disk clone from the oversized LaCie external drive to a drive more the size of the Lion clone (approx 140G)?   The LaCie drive is far too roomy and nice to have sitting gathering dust for only 140G to be used in an emergency restore.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

    Good info Csound1, and thanks.
So my final question (I think):  How does one move/copy a startup disk clone from one external drive to another, and still have it bootable on the new external drive?   I'm still considering freeing this LaCie drive up for more dynamic storage and getting another drive for the bootable startup disk clones IF I can move this Lion startup disk clone to a new external drive.
I guess the summary question is:   how does one clone a startup disk clone?  As I think about this, and recall the Disk Utility screens, couldn't I simply select the Lion clone on the LaCie FW external drive and do the same operation I did with the original internal Lion drive?  Basically the same steps as before but this time the source is the LaCie FW external and the destination is a new external drive?
Thanks again; wonderful forum here with very smart people.

  • How do I recover my iTunes music library from an external backup?

The bad news:  my iMac G5 died with my iTunes library on it.
The good news:  it was backed up to an external hard drive.
I'm not going to fix the iMac, so I need to retrieve the backup and put it on my MacBook.  How do I import from the external drive to my MacBook?
I also have the library on my iPod, but it appears that if I want to import form the iPod, I have to hook it to the old computer first to switch it to manual syn mode.  But the old iMac is out of service.
Thanks in advance for a pointer to an article or other tips.

what is backed up on the external ? the entire iTunes folder including media files and the library files or just the media files ?
if the former, just copy the iTunes folder from the external to <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on the new Mac.
if the latter, drag the folder containing the media files from the external to the automatically add to iTunes folder inside the iTunes folder on your new Mac.
all your playlists, ratings, playcounts, etc. are lost unless you can retrieve the iTunes library file from the iMac.

  • How to use one music library from one external hard drive on two different computers

I have 57 gigs of music in my itunes library on my laptop (Windows Vista).  I backed up the library onto an external hard drive.  I would like to play the music on a second computer (Windows XP) without putting the music on the second computer, just keeping it on the external hard drive.
I have the latest version of iTunes and Quicktime installed.  In iTunes on both computers, under Advanced Preferences I changed the iTunes media folder location to the folder on the external hard drive and checked the boxes for "Keep iTunes media folder organized" and "copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library".  Also under the File tab, "Organize Library", I clicked on "Consolidate Files" and "Reorganize Files in the folder itunes music".
On the second computer I tried holding SHIFT while launching iTunes until the prompt appears asking to create a new library or point to an existing library.  While attempting to point to the new location, I am only able to open the music folder, not set it as the location.  In advanced preferences when I click "change" for the itunes media folder location, I can locate the folder but the only button I can click on is "open" or "cancel".  "Open" will open the folder showing all my music.  I tried typing in the location.  It shows the correct location.
I was able to see the songs in the library in itunes on the second computer but it won't play the music.  There are no exclamation points next to the songs.  I am also able to see the playlists but there aren't any songs in the playlists.
There are no problems with itunes on the first computer.  Everything works as it should.
Ideally I would like to use the same folder on the external hard drive for both computers if possible.  But for now I want to at least get the music playing with the playlists on the second computer from the external hard drive.
    Please help.

  • I-Photo Library: How to move a Iphoto Library from 1 hard drive to another?

The hard drive that I have my I-Photo library on is running out of space and is my
start-up drive. I want to move the i-photo library from the start-up drive to my storage drive which has plenty of storage space. My Machine is G4 desktop having
OX10.5.8 operating system.I would like to know how to do this. I tried searching for i-photo library Manager but could not find it

    Simply:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the Other Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • How to play itunes music library from iMac using apple remote? Can only use my iPhone as a REMOTE to play on itunes to Apple TV!!

how can i how can I play itunes library on my IPHONE4 from IMAC using APPLE REMOTE? I can only use my iPhone 4 as a REMOTE to play itunes from IMac to APPLE TV.

You cannot.  The remote app is exclusively for remotely controlling an apple tv for playback of a library on your computer.  If you want to play your computer's music on your iPhone you just use home sharing on both devices and play the music in the Music app on your phone, not using the Remote app on your phone.

  • How do I move an iTunes library from one external drive to another?

I need to move my iTunes library from one external disk to another, because the original disk is about to fail. So, I went into iTunes Perferences --> Advanced, and set the library to a new, empty folder on the new drive.
Nothing changed. I expected all my music to vanish from iTunes, so that I would have to re-import it. However, all the music remained, still on the old disk. At this point, if I were to recreate the library on the new disk, I would have all of my music twice.
Is it possible to move an iTunes library from one external drive to another, or am I stuck with my original choice until I buy a new machine? If I can move it, can one of you clever folks explain how it could be done?

    Paul Seymour1 wrote:
However, those are all dealing with old versions of iTunes that still contained the Advanced --> Consolidate Library command which is no longer part of the app. (I'm on iTunes 10.6.1.)
Consolidate is still part of iTunes.
It is in iTunes menu File > Library > Manage library > Consolidate.
The article you linked to is old and it is (and was) a hacky way of doing it.
Just copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to new location, hold Option (Mac) or Shift (Windows) when launching iTunes.

    Home Sharing is option A.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3819
Option B is consolidating the library to an external HD.

Or you can use one of the other 8000 methods. I just prefer these two.

  • TS4062 Have lost itunes music library from my iPad

Cannot access my iTunes music library from my iPad3.  It was working fine until I installed iTunes on my netbook (windows 7) yesterday.  That seemed to result in losing my music library on the iPad.  I also have the iTunes account on a desktop pc.  Any suggestions as to what caused this and how to fix it?  Thanks!

iOS devices can only be synced to one iTunes library.
You probably allowed syncing of your iPad when you plug it to your Netbook which was previously synced with your PC (by the way, you posted on the iTunes for Mac forum).  It that time, you must have seen a popup warning telling you that your iPad is synchronized with another iTunes libray.
If you sync your iOS device with an empty iTunes library, it will result in deleting everything on it.  In you case, you should plug back your iPad in your PC and then, select to restore it from your latest backup.
