How to move my iMac?

I am going to be moving interstate.  Any suggestions on to safely move my iMac?  I do not have the original box.  Thanks to all.

Two possibilties: check with your local Apple store to see if they have a box they'll give you. You might be surprised.
When my neighbor's son went to college I picked up a wide roll of bubble wrap and wrapped it around his iMac until it looked like the Michelin man. Then I took a box cutter to a large cardboard box and used strapping tape to afix it to the front and back of the computer. He stood it up in the back seat of the car and strapped it in the the seatbelt.

  • How to move email folders from iMac to MacBook

I have an iMac which I use almost all the time. When I travel I use my MacBook. Both have the latest operating system etc. By connecting the two with a cable I have no trouble moving files from my iMac to my MacBook. However, I do not have a clue how to move my email file folders in which I put my incoming emails.  I believe the Library is hidden. So how do I get to the Library and what files do I need to move to move my folders, I created, one sees in the left margin of the email window?

Unfortunately this did not do the job. I have clicked on all the items in the iCloud preferences and nothing happens. When I click on Sign Out I get the question "Do you want to keep a copy of your iCloud contracts on this Mac?--- I don't know-- What does it matter? So I keep the contract on this Mac. Then I am asked "If you stop using iCloud for Calendars, calendars stored in iCloud will be deleted from this Mac." What is this all about? What should I do?

Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • How do I get my just made movie from iMac to iTunes?

How do I get my just made movie from iMac to iTunes?

    Hello MWWWB,
Unlike iPhoto, Photoshop is only an editor. It does not store or organize images. In iPhoto preferences, you can choose Photoshop as an editor. You will then get a choice when you double click on an iPhoto thumbnail to use iPhoto or Photoshop to make edits. But Photoshop does not have a library to store images like iPhoto.
You may want to use Adobe Bridge or Lightroom to help name and organize your pictures. You can Export your iPhoto Library to a folder and manage the exported images there.
Personally, I hate the arcane manner iPhoto stores and organizes images. I use it only for photos from my iPhone.

  • How to move my iPhoto library to a new iMAC?

how to move my iPhoto library to a new iMAC?

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network, Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • How to put movies from iMac to iPad and use iMovie

I have enjoyed using iMovie on the Mac to create "Trailers" of my family movies. I purchased iMovie for iPad and there are some new interesting "Trailers", different from the ones on the Mac. So I'd like to try them out.
But I cannot figure out how to move .MOV files onto an iPad. (Ironic, I know). Here are the things I've tried.
    1. I tried a straight drag and drop when the iPad was connected, from Finder window to iPad on the Device. No go.
    2. I tried to create an iTunes playlist of the movie, which works fine on iTunes on the Mac. but
          a. It won't show up on iTunes on the iPad, even after making sure it was supposed to be synced and checked
          b. It won't show up in iMovie on the iPad
    3. I tried to put it into iPhoto on the Mac, and made an 'album' with it. It won't show up on the iPad even after careful syncing.
As a test, i recorded a few seconds of video on the iPad, and of course it works fine. But the videos I am interested in turning into Trailers are movies I have already recorded of my family. "Gee, Wally, isn't there a way to do this?"
Is there any way to put a video from iMac to iPad?

additional info: I found some hint that the iPad can't take just any old movie format, so I used "Convert to format for iPad", an option i had never seen on iTunes on my imac before. But sadly, even the .m4v format of the movie will not show up on the iPad under iTunes nor under iMovie.
I can certainly take an iPad iMovie trailer to the iMac if I 'finish' it, but it is a final a product, so i would have to break it up into all the little sections again.
So I still cannot seem to move a movie file to the iPad iMovie edit window. All my 'finished' iMovies show up under "movies" on the iPad, but never under the iMovie edit window. Hope that's clear.
I want to use those new trailers with my home video.
    NEWEST Update, still no joy
I found this tech article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4792 that says i can move an iMovie from iOS to iMovie on my Mac. I followed the steps exactly, but iMovie on teh Mac does not recognize the iMovie Trailer, so the Import button stays grayed out.
    so close.

  • How to move old e-mail from iMac to shared MacMini - separate user accounts?

My wife and I share a new MacMini.  We each have separate user accounts.  She would like her old e-mail messages moved from her old iMac to the MacMini.  I believe they are in her old iMac's USER--LIBRARY--MAIL  directory.  Is this right?   Do I just copy these files and paste them in the same directory in the MacMini?
Also does anyone know how to move her old Keychain files on her old iMac to her user account on the macmini?
    Thanks for the help.   -Bruce

There are two issues when I do so. First of all I have "ghost" accounts who do not show up in my e-mail preferences but keep on showing up randomly. Secondly I cannot remove "other accounts" in Mail>Preferences I will get the following error message: The account "XXXX.XXXX.Com"  is shared using iCloud. You can remove this account from iCloud in Internet Accounts.
And in iCloud internet accounts the particular account will not be visible.

  • HT1498 rented movie on iMac how can I play on apple tv ?

rnted movie on imac, how can I play on apple tv

iMac need to be on with iTunes running and Home Sharing enabled on the imac and AppleTV.
Provided the movie has FULLY downloaded to the imac you should be able to play it on AppleTV using the Computers icon.  The iMac may say it's ready to watch but it won't show on AppleTV until fully downloaded.
Under Computers you will have options for Movies, TV Shows etc.
Select Movies and any available rentals will be seen in a Rentals row that appears only when a valid rental is available to play.
Do not try to play from the main menu movies icon (logical if it allowed you to but it won't!).

  • Selling wife's mac - how to move all her stuff to sub-account on my iMac?

Selling wife's MacBook - how do I move all her stuff to sub-account on my iMac, so that when she logs into her user account, it looks and feels exactly like she was on her MacBook? Needs to sync her iPad to her own library of apps & music, needs to have her documents lined up in the exact folder structure, her photos in iPhoto, etc... basically, logging into her user account on my iMac needs to feel to her exactly like she was using her MacBook. iMac and MacBook are both running 10.6.6. I've found discussion forums about how to move stuff from user folders around on the same computer, how to restore a hard drive from a backup... not sure how to do the specific move I'm talking about here. I'm basically trying to take an entire harddrive backup and make it into it's own user account on a different machine.
I've started by running a backup through SuperDuper. What next? Any ideas? Thanks!

Shutdown the MacBook, connect it to the iMac via Firewire, and start it up holding down the t key.
If you don't have a firewire cable to connect the two, you can do it over the network, it will just be slower.
On the iMac, run Migration Assisstant and migrate her account from the MacBook to your iMac. Just migrate her user account. MA will create an identical copy of her account on your iMac.
You could also migrate from the clone you made with SuperDuper.

  • HT4236 How to move photos from iphone to imac?

Not from the camera roll. I have 6000 photos from my old iphone3g that aren't on my current computer, and would like to know how to move them without e-mailling each one to myself. There must be an easy solution, does anyone know what that is?

The sync is one way - computer to iphone.  the iphone is not a backup/storage device.  it simply mirror the selected content of your computer.
Since the pics came from your computer in the first place, then they should still be there.  Certainly you maintained a backup copy of your pics.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a abckup ( not good), then you can e-mail the pics to yourself.  They will never be of the original qaulity as pics are reduced in size/quality when syncing to iphone.  You may be abl;e to find 3rd party software as well.  Again, then pics will not be of the original quality.

  • How to move iTunes Library to new computer

I am selling my imac and getting a retina mbp, but the imac will be gone before I can get the new one. So, I need to move all my music from the imac onto an external hard drive to import later. How can I go about doing this? If possible I could just copy all mp3s into a folder on the external and then import it into itunes on new computer. Can I do this? What other ways are there/are they easier? Thanks.

  • How to move Downloads, Movies, Music& Pictures folders to an external drive

I have a 2008 iMac which hard disk (as you probably know) is not upgradable. After 16 months of use the disk became full so I bought an external firewire drive (1T LaCie d2). My plan is to move most folders located under /Users/username/ (the Documents, Downloads, Movies, Music and Pictures folders) to the external drive and replace them with aliases.
Searching on the net, I found instructions on how to move the iTunes Music folder and how to change iPhoto default photos folder. I then moved the said folders and their contents to the external drive and created the aliases. Now when I try to delete the folders for their original location I get a message stating that "folders cannot be modified or deleted because they are required by Mac OS X". I know that I can delete these folders using terminal Unix commands but is this the correct approach?
Or should I go and create a new user account using as Home directory a folder located on the external drive? Or, alternatively, just change the existing user Home to one in the external drive?
I think my question is important and of general interest and I was really disappointed to find out that Apple has no documentation on this subject (or at least, I couldn't find any).

this happens because they are protected by "deny delete" ACLs.
I know that I can delete these folders using terminal Unix commands but is this the correct approach?
that's one way to do it. then you can move the folders to teh external and put symbolic links, *NOT aliases* in their original locations.
Or should I go and create a new user account using as Home directory a folder located on the external drive?
Or, alternatively, just change the existing user Home to one in the external drive?
that might be the easiest option. just copy the whole home folder to the external. then go to system preferences->accounts. unlock the lock at the bottom, control-click on your user and choose 'advanced options". in the popup change the location of the home directory to the external. then reboot and when you log in your home directory should be on the external. then you can trash the old home directory on the internal.

  • Please help with updated info how to Move iTunes 10.5.2 to a new MacBook Pro

With Christmas fast approaching, and new MAC computers being left under the tree, I would find it helpful for an update as to how best to move my son's iTunes library from my iMac (late 2011 version with Lion) which he is sharing to his new MacBook Pro (Early 2011 with Lion upgrade) . There is a lot of old information floating around on how to do this with prior versions of iTunes, but with iCloud and Apps now in the cloud I would like someone knowledgeable to update me and the community with the best way to do this for the latest versions of iTunes running on Lion. He also has his iPhone 4 synched with his account on my iMac and would like to deauthorize his iTunes on my iMac and have him sync on his new computer as well.   I know it is probably hidden among the forums somewhere, but with a lot of people upgrading to new computers, it would be helpful for a refresher on this thread. Thanks!

You cannot use the iPhone unless you have the previous owners AppleID & password.
