How to move to new computer without migration assistant?

I am getting a new iMac and need some help with how to move photos, mail, music etc. I am going from iMac power pc to an intel based iMac. I do not have a firewire cable, and am not anxious to spend any more than I already have on computer equipment just to transfer files. Is there a way to move things using flash drives or something to recreate my iTunes library, photo library, mail and such?
Any easy, step by step instructions?
Many thanks in advance,
Jane

It all has me a bit nervous, which is another reason I find myself leaning toward just moving music, photos, calendar, addresses, and some documents manually.
Keep in mind that:
1. You still have to connect the computers together in some way. A Firewire connection is many times faster than an Ethernet one.
2. Kappy's manual migration method specifies copying over a long list of *home folder items* for good reasons. Basically, you should consider your home folder's contents as an interrelated set of items designed to be used together. If you try to pick & choose among them, there is a good chance some things will not work as expected, at least not without more work to (for example) reset user preferences or go back & find missing application support file(s) you neglected to copy over on the first try. This can become tedious & frustrating unless you understand the function of each file.
3. There is very little chance that using Setup or Migration Assistant will cause any operating system 'malfunction' of any sort, & even less of one that this will cause any issues that are more difficult to resolve than an inadequate partial manual migration.

  • IWork to new computer without migration

I just bought a new computer, and want to transfer my old iWork license to my computer, but I can't migrate as my old computer is back in the UK with my boyfriend, and I'm in the USA. If I get him to uninstall it and give me the serial number, can I just download the trial and put in the serial numbers?
    Jules

Just checking, how did you buy it?
    1. Purchased DVD in box which has no serial number, just install from disk.
    2. Downloaded version prior to MAS, which requires SN and is only to be used on 1 Mac, unless Family licence purchased.
    3. Purchased from Mac App Store (MAS) where you just need to log in using your Apple ID and then can install on any Macs using the same ID. In this case I would say it is a stretch for you and your boyfriend (ethically) to be both using it, though physically there is nothing stopping you. The reason for this is you do not meet the same household requirement in the licensing.

  • Hard disk crashed: How to sync to new computer without erasing my iphone

    Hello,
I have an Iphone 4 and Win XP laptop. My old notebook's hard drive crashed and I do not have any itunes backup. Now I have a new laptop and I want to start syncing my iphone to the new computer. I am concerned that as soon as I sync the phone to the computer, itunes will erase everything on the phone. What do I do?
    Thanks in advance,
    -CIL

Download iTunes, log into your account(same one as the purchases on the iPhone).
Plug the iPhone in-you will get warning about different computer, etc.-do not sync.
Either use the prompt to transfer purchases or once the iPhone shows up in iTunes-right click on it and select transfer purchases.
You will only be able to downloaded iTunes purchased content(songs, videos, apps)-nothing from CD or bought from other sources.

  • All menus greyed out after transfer to new computer via Migration Assistant

    Hi!
My collegue just moved all his stuff to a new computer using the Migration Assistant.
All seem to work fine except Apple Remote Desktop 3 which start up, but the main window isn't shown and the menus are all grey.
We have tried to re-install and also tried to toss everything that's related to ARD (Like the ”Remote Desktop” folder in /Library/Application Support/Apple and the ARD prefs. file in ~/Library/Preferences) and re-installed again, but still the same.
    Any ideas?
    A permission problem somewhere perhaps?

It helped to do this command:
    +sudo rm -rf /var/db/RemoteManagement+
    Found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2577
This let us type in the serial number again when starting up the ”Remote Desktop.app” and all seems fine.

  • HT4889 Using USB time machine drive to move to new rMBP and Migration assistant can't find my drive

I have a time machine backup on my USB drive.  I can see it clearly in finder, then when I run migration assistant, it can't be found.
I've tried repairing the disk, it's fine, it just can't find it.  Any ideas?
Both machines are on the same rev of Mt. Lion, 2010 MBP and 2013 rMBP. . . .
    Please advise.
    --Andrew

No, both the backup and the new system are OSX10.6.
I'm afraid your solution doesn't work.  If I go through finder and open up the folders on the backup, and try, for example, to open my "Movies" folder (which is one I dearly hope to recover), I get a message that:
"The folder "Movies" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents."
I have tried Repair Permissions, but this doesn't help.  All of the important folders have a little red stop sign on them.
    Thanks though.

  • How can synchronized local imap folders be migrated to a new computer, without new download from imap server, so that everything is working as before?

How can synchronized local imap folders be migrated to a new computer, without new download from imap server, so that everything is working as before?
I only managed to import synchronized folders (from old computer) to local folders in thunderbird at the new computer. Then I tried to move the messages to the folder of the imap account at the new computer where I temporarily limited the synchronization to one month. When I remove this limit the thunderbird program starts to redownload all the messages again nonetheless.
Since I have a dual boot system (Windows/Linux, thunderbird is installed twice) and have to pay for every megabyte, this is very annoying.

Have you considered using a shared profile folder for the dual boot? so the two remain in sync?v It will require a drive both operating systems can access, but most people who dual boot have such. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Moving_your_profile_folder_-_Thunderbird
otherwise copy the entire profile, not parts of it.

  • How do I switch my ipod to a new computer without losing all of my songs?

My computer just crashed and I bought a new one downloaded iTunes then plugged in my iPod to sync all of my content to my new comp. and it won't let me do it without erasing all of my content which I neglected to back up. How do I get my iPod's content onto my new computer without it being backed up?

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
SharePod Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

This should be a pretty good guide for setting up the iPad with a new computer and for keeping your content.
Don't forget to authorize the new computer as well. Launch iTunes and go to Store>Authorize this Computer.

    1) Without connecting your iPad to your laptop, start iTunes. Click on Edit. Click on Preferences. Click on Devices. Check the box next to "Prevent your iPod etc. from automatically syncing." Click OK.
    2) Now connect your iPad to your laptop and start iTunes.
    3) When iTunes starts, right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select Transfer purchases etc.
    4) After it finishes transferring all your apps to your new laptop, right click on your iPad and select Backup your iPad.
    5) After it finishes backing up your iPad, right click on your iPad and select Restore etc.
    6) After it finishes restoring, left click on your iPad , then click on the Apps tab on top, and check the box next to Sync Apps, then click on Apply below.
If everything on your iPad looks good after the sync, go back and click on Edit / Preferences / Devices and UN-check the box next to Prevent your iPod etc. The only other thing you may want to check is if your contacts, bookmarks, etc. are syncing correctly now. If not, go to the Info tab after connecting and make sure you indicate which features you want to sync with what sources.
Make sure that you move your iTunes library from the old computer to the new one as well for all of your music.
Here is an article that can help you with that.

    Hi,
    I lost my computer.
How can I sincronize me Iphone with the new computer without loose my contacts and apps?
    Thanks

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.
Use your backup copy to move everything to the new computer.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from the iphone:  File>Transfer Purchases
If you enter one unique contact and calendar entry on your computer, then when you first sync you should get the option to merge the data.
