How to mute startup sound? (iMac, OS 10.8)

Ever since I've upgraded to Mountain Lion, the startup sound came back.
I am using an iMac so you clearly didn't read this post if you're suggesting the Silent Ninja application. I've even tried it myself, and it doesn't work.
The Arcana is what I used to use with Snow Leopard and seems it's incompatible with 10.8.

If you use the iMac's built-in speakers for sound when using the iMac, the startup sound reflects the volume setting for the built-in speakers.
If you use headphones or external speakers connected to the headphones port on the iMac, that volume setting is stored separately (from the built-in speakers).  To mute the startup sound, disconnect anything in the headphones port, so that the iMac is using the built-in speakers.  Set the volume to mute.
You can now reconnect the headphones or external speakers, and the volume level should go back to normal, but the setting for the built-in speakers has been set to mute and it is retained.  When you startup, the startup sound should be muted.

Yes, I agree but sometimes in certain situation, i need it to be mute, like when to snap picture in some quite place. I tried off the warning tones but the n82 camera sound still can be heard.
In that case I'm afraid you're out of luck. Your N82 was obviously intended for a region where the camera must make a noise.

Don't edit the audio into the timeline. Or pull the audio level down to zero in the inspector or on the audio waveform in the timeline.

  • Mute Startup Sound

    Hi,
I was using it for a long time StartupSoundPrefPane11b3 with no problems, but this week I had to erase my hd and restore the disk from time machine.
Since then I can't use anymore your program, I checked the boxes "Turn on startup volume control" and "Mute" and turn on the lock.
After turn off and on again I get the startup sound.
I went to system preferences, and "Startup Sound" program but the "Mute" checkbox is not active anymore...
What do you suggest me to do, please ?
    Many thanks!
PS: I'm ruuning on a Mid 2007 iMac with 10.7.3 Lion software.

You can make a Mac do what you can't always make a baby do:
    SLEEP!
Instead of shutting down your Mac (requiring a restart with a BOING!) just let it sleep. It is designed to do that.
(Anyone who dreams up a way to fit a similar system preference to a baby will win the Nobel Prize...)

Look at Psst.  Also look at the Similar Software section lower down on page  linked to.
I suggest you turn it down if you want but don't completely mute it since it acts as a error signal in certain cases.
(I just realized you also posted this in another thread earlier)

  • How to mute incomming sound from all callers when ...

We sometimes transmit a meeting for worship to sick ones who dial in to listen. If they don't remember (or don't know how to) mute their microphones we get feedback through the PA because the laptop headphone socket is fed into the PA to play music.
Is there a button I've not yet seen in Skype that will "Mute all incomming sound from callers"?

I've never tried this but I think its what you are after.
On the skype menu, go to Tools and then Options
    Select Sounds
The is an option to Mute all sounds - this should stop any incoming sound including erroneous cam and mic audio from all callers and I think will allow your outgoing sound to transmit ok.

  • How to mute camera sound??

i have iphone 4 ios7, i can't mute my camera sound but i've been switch the silent button. heelp me

Laws in some countries don't allow silent phone cameras to discourage surreptitious photography.   iPhones sold in those countries will not silence the camera.
You may be able to reduce its volume via
Settings > Sounds > RINGER AND ALERTS

  • How do I mute the startup sound

How do I mute the startup sound on my imac

The start up sound is there for specific reasons, for example if you do a Safe Boot or PRAM reset  you need the start up sound to do those key functions. I would recommend against masking it and follow Apple's suggestions.  Please read your owners manual, where Apple states:
    Putting Your iMac to Sleep
If you‘ll be away from your iMac for less than a few days, put it to sleep. When your iMac is in sleep, its screen is dark. You can quickly wake your iMac and bypass the startup process.
This means don't turn it off, my iMac is about 5 years old now. The only time it's restarted is when I'm doing updates, it has reliably that way and has never given me any problems. In short, let it sleep when it's not being used.

  • How to mute/delete startup sound in Mountain Lion?

Is there a way to shut off/mute the startup sound in Mountain Lion without simply turning down all sounds?  For years I have used a third party pref pane called startup sound, but it has not been updated for OS 10.8.  Thanks.

    1. Login as administrator and open Terminal
    2. Create scriptfile for muting
    sudo nano /path/to/mute-on.sh
    3. Enter this as content, when done press Ctrl+O to save and Ctrl+X to exit:
    #!/bin/bash
osascript -e 'set volume with output muted'
    4. Create scriptfile for unmuting
    sudo nano /path/to/mute-off.sh
    5. Enter this as content, when done press Ctrl+O to save and Ctrl+X to exit:
    #!/bin/bash
osascript -e 'set volume without output muted'
    6. Make both files executable:
    sudo chmod u+x /path/to/mute-on.sh
    sudo chmod u+x /path/to/mute-off.sh
    7. Check if any hooks already exist (these will be overwritten, so make sure it is OK for you)
    sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook
    sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LogoutHook
    8. Add hooks for muting
sudo defaults write com.apple.loginwindow LogoutHook /path/to/mute-on.sh
sudo defaults write com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook /path/to/mute-off.sh

  • How do I turn off startup sound?

Every computer I ever had, the first thing I do is to turn off the startup sound because it is very annoying in a public place and sometimes in a quiet place. I have not been able to find out how to trun it off on my Air. I asked the guys at the stores and they just say you can't. That is really dumb. I turned off my speaker but that is not a practical way because I may not remember to turn it off when I shut down.
The question is how do I turn it off permenantly.
    Love to know.
    Thanks.

  • How disable startup sound mountain lion?

How do I disable startup sound OSX 10.8.2?

    no problem:
before going deep, some points here:
I own about 13 Apple Devices since almost 7 years and my country is the first where Apple has the most OS market share:
    http://royal.pingdom.com/2011/03/16/the-10-most-mac-friendly-countries-on-the-pl anet/
Also, I have about 50 "close" friends that have Mac OS products (imacs, MacBook, Air...)
I never, ever had a recovery problems in 7 years and that's why I buy Apple products.I never, ever heard a friend, in my country or in another that was stuck because of the start sound. (i already have had a friend that have to replace it, but starting sound was not necessary on this case). Here 4 situations with a MacBook Air:
You try to start the Mac, nothing happen, even if the sound would work. In this case, battery was completly down. So you plug it, wait 3 mn and start it. What would be the use of the sound here? Should they not "spare" some battery just to make the sound work? No I do not think so.
You try to start the Mac, you disabled the sound and nothing happen. You bring it to Apple and they discover that your screen is dead. What would be the use of the sound here?
You try to start the Mac, you disabled the sound and nothing happen. You bring it to Apple and they discover that your processor is dead. What would be the use of the sound here?
You try to start the Mac, you disabled the sound and nothing happen. You bring it to Apple and they discover that you could repaired the problem if the starting sound could be heared. But you just putted on mute before the last shutdown. (so why not make the sound work, even though you putted on mute on this case?)
Seeing your "level" and points, I am pretty sure you will come with many counter arguments and I do not really care about them frankly.
My point is, after 7 years using Apple products, I am more than happy to have them and I will continue to buy them because they are so amazing, it never appear to me that I need this starting sound that causes me more trouble when i start it and my wife or kids are sleeping not too far, trying everytime to put me far away and try to hide the Air under pillows when I start it.
Frankly, if that's going to happen to me in the next 7 years, I would be more than happy to go to my Apple store and bring them back to their specialists and hear I was a bad boy, i should not have disabled the sound. I will not care 1 second trying to fix it myself if I do not see how to fix it. And I will return home, with new Apple products I would have buyed in the meantime.
My turn to ask you a question, if your car tomorrow does not start (you do not hear the starting sound ;-)), are you going to try to remove the motor and see if perhaps you can do something yourself?
If you are a mecanics, maybe, if no, I doubt.
If there so many threads about this and some software build around this, it means there is something about it.
I guess you are going to defend your point telling other things...
If that happen to me, I am sure Apple guys will fix it. That's my ultimate solution. Period.

  • How do i turn off the startup sound on macbook pro?

how do i turn off the startup sound on macbook pro?

You don't. You may find some third-party software that will, however. Try Auto Mute.
    Alternatively, you can try this:
I think this is the best and simplest solution. Open a Terminal window and type (or copy/paste) the following to turn down the startup noise:
         sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume="%00"
    Press RETURN.
And to restore it to the original value type:
         sudo nvram -d SystemAudioVolume
    Press RETURN.
    That's all folks.

    3. How do I update the computer (e.g. Windows update kind off thing)
    Please help.
    Cheers,

    1. Make sure the volume is on. Check that the machine makes other sounds.
    2. Here is a link for Safari for a Mac 10.2.8
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2964
Though I'd be surprised if it would be very useful. Things have changed a lot on the internet since that came out. An old version of Firefox might be better. I don't know where you would get an old version of flash. It is an Adobe product.
    3. There are no further updates to  Jaguar 10.2 than you already have, 10.2.8 that was the last update.
