How to neatly transfer to a new address?

I have changed ISPs and now have a new email address.
I maintained my old email address for a month to make sure I had not missed informing contacts of the change or missed out on sites with the old address.
I have now fully switched and am exclusively using the new email address.
However Mail defaults to tagging my emails with the old address so when people reply it goes to the dead email box.
If I try to delete my old email address in the preferences it tells me that this will delete all the contents of my In and Out boxes which used the old email address.
How do I keep all my old mail but have Mail only use my new address for all links?

Go to Mail Preferences>Accounts. Select and drag the old account in the list so that it is below the new account.

To change it, you have delete the existing account. However you can avoid losing any pictures in the process. To avoid losing photo stream photos, save them to your camera roll (if not already there) before deleting the account. To do this, open your my photo stream album, tap Edit, tap the photos, tap Share, then tap Save to Camera Roll. (Camera roll photos are not effected by deleting the account.)
Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, then sign back in with the new ID. This deletes the account and your iCloud data from your device, but not from iCloud. Provided you are signing back into the same account, your iCloud data will reappear on your device when you sign back in.

Sync them via iTunes from the contact manager on your computer (that's Address Book if you're a Mac user or Outlook if you're a Windows user).

Welcome to the Apple community.
I assume you are trying to syjnc via IiCloud. Do you have contact syncing enabled in the settings on both devices.
You might also take a look at this User Tip, to ensure you understand the differences between the different accounts in Address Book.

You can move your iTunes music Library folder to external media from the G5 to the Mavericks machine and point a modern version of iTunes at it.
I don't know what you'll have to do with your Contacts, however.

Many thanks for this. This was very useful and a good starting point. I'm a very recently converted and proud new owner of one of the 20", 2GHz Intel Core Duo Imacs, and am in the process of converting all of my important files and data over from my home PC to my Mac.
So far all has gone well; sorting out my ITunes and Digital Photos was easy as pie, as was my documents, however my last hurdle to overcome is trying to transfer my emails from MS Outlook on my Home PC to my Mac Mail. I have tried your Thunderbird suggestion which seems to have me on the right track, but the outcome was that only 1 of the 130 emails in my Outlook Inbox were imported. I've also tried using installing Eudora on my Home PC and importing all my Outlook email to that, however each time I try that Eudora ends up crashing leaving me back at square one.
I will keep searching this discussion forum for other ideas, but in the meantime if you have any other helpful suggestion I'd be grateful!

You can authorize up to 5 computers with the same iTunes account with iTunes.
There is no device limit for the number of iPods, iPads, and iPhones that can be synced with the same iTunes library and iTunes account on the same computer.
The iPhone can be synced or manually managed with music and video with an iTunes library on a single computer only and photos can be transferred from a single computer only. When transferring iTunes content and photos from another computer, all iTunes content and photos transferred from a different computer will be erased from the iPhone first.
To avoid this with a new computer, transfer your iTunes library from your old computer to your new computer along with all other important data that you will want or need to access on your new computer such as documents, photos, etc. For your iTunes library, follow the instructions included with this link.

No I haven't backed up the computer. I know that I can get my purchased apps and songs back as iTunes keeps a record of what you have bought but what about your CD's that you have downloaded and how do you preserve your notes and info.
I use my iPad to download my photos to and edit them. Am I able to off load those on to an external hard drive before I sync.
I may have a copy of something's on an old iPod classic as I had to transfer from a PC to a Mac some months ago so I am hoping I won't be in too much trouble with this. But I worry about a locked notes file I have and my photos, contacts etc.
I guess that I am in a position to manually record or print off any info I need to keep but what a job!!!!

Ideally you would have backed up the library from your old comupter on a regular basis, and have restored that library to your new computer...
You should be able to:
Backup the device to the new installation
Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post
Restore the device from the backup
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

Make one final USB sync with the old iPod. The sync includes a backup. Then connect the new iPod to the same computer/iTunes library and restore from the backup of the old iPOd. All the synced media like apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media is not included in the backup that iTunes makes. For how to restore see:
