How to not be asked to save unchanged documents?

New MacBook with Leopard Snow. Files from an old iMac Panther. In Pages, opening old Claris Works .cwk files, when there's no changes I'm asked to discard or save changes. When there have been changes made I can't just just save, I'm given the save dialogue box as if I said save as, and it doesn't even remember where the document was from, I have to refind it. Both of these things are asoundingly annoying.
Can anyone tell me please, how to stop this happening? I guess one way is to install Claris Works. That way the person who uses it will never be able to upgrade OS though as Leopard Snow is the last to be able to run older software. So I'm wondering if there's something I can do to Pages?
Thanks.

When you open an Appleworks (previously ClarisWorks) file in Pages (or Numbers) you're creating a new document. If you discard changes, the Pages document will be deleted; the change was the creation of the document.
If you accept the save, you will get the normal dialogue asking for a name and location.
You will then have a Pages document and an AppleWorks document.
There is no further need to open that particular AW file again
It will occur each time you open a AW (CW) file in iWork, once per file unless you discard the changes and then open the same file again.
You could if you wish install AppleWorks 6.2.9 if you can find it. However, once converted to iWork formats the only use for the old AW files is as an archive.
In other words, no you can't get round it, but you only need to do it once per file.

    Hi Erika1987,
If you have not saved the document and Acrobat closed then it's not possible to retrieve the lost data on the pdf file.

  • Anytime I click on a .pdf I am asked to save the document rather than allowing me to just view it.

Anytime I click on a link to a .pdf I am asked to save the document. I would like to simply view most. I have been unable to determine how to change this. I am not sure whether it is a setting in Firefox, Acrobat, or my system. In the dialogue box that asks whether I would like to open or save the file, I had checked the box indicating that the files should always be opened, but this did not happen. It kept asking whether to "open file" or "save file." Then I had a file I wanted to save, so I clicked that radio button and saved that file. Now, it will no longer allow me to open files.
    Thanks for your help...

Please update to the most recent version of Firefox:
*[[Update Firefox to the latest version]]
[[How to fix preferences that won't save]] or reset the saved setting in the Applications panel-> [[Applications panel - Set how Firefox handles different types of files]]
    Or set it as default:
In order to change the default reader for PDF files (to not open PDF files with Firefox's internal PDF reader), follow these steps:
#Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and click Options (Preferences for Linux and Mac).
#In the Options (Preferences for Linux and Mac) window, select the ''Applications'' panel.
#In the ''Search'' field, type ''PDF''. You should find ''Portable Document Format (PDF)''.
#On the right hand side you should find an ''Action'' column. Use that to select your favorite PDF reader. In order to view PDF files in Firefox, choose ''Preview in Firefox''.

  • "save as" pop up box does not allow me to save the document.

    Hello ,
"save as" pop up box does not allow me to save the document. Shows a blank screen. Any idea what would cause this? I just purchased acrobat pro dc.
    Thanks!

    Found this solution:
The default "Save As" dialog in Acrobat DC is different than the dialog that you've had in earlier releases of Acrobat, it also allows you to save to the cloud and previous locations you've saved files to. It is possible that when Acrobat tries to connect to "the cloud", it runs into problems. You may want to try to turn this feature off to see if that brings your save as dialog back: Open up Acrobat's preferences, then go to the "General" category and deselect "Show online storage when saving files":

  • Reader asks to save some documents

Sometimes (I think older pdf-documents) the reader 11 asks me to save the document even if I haven't done any changes.
    How can I stop this?

That I couldn't do. I'm a freelance web designer, not an Adobe employee. I just volunteer here. The "prevent security breaches" came from a release note I read some time back. It's generic for "we fixed some things we missed the first time" as far as I know.

  • Why are some of my links not opening when I save a document as a pdf?  They are opening in word.

The links are opening in microsoft word documents but when I save the document to a pdf some of the links are not opening.  The links are containing % or lots of extra numbers.  How can I prevent this from happening?

What is your operating system?  Reader version?  How do you convert to PDF?
You write that "some" of the links don't open; what's the difference with links that do open?

  • Save unchanged documents?

    Hi,
when I open an MSOffice document with Pages (or Keynote), and I close it without ANY change... why does the program always ask me if I want to save the document?
I am a new MAC user, so I have tons of Word and Powerpoint documents!
I have already change the default application to pages (from “Word” to “Pages”), but the program always ask me for the “save” when I close it without changes!
can anyone explain me if there’s something to do about that?
    thanks

    Pedro,
When you open a Word document in Pages (or a PowerPoint doc in Keynote), the document is still in its original format -- it's still a Word doc. Pages' default action is to save the document as a Pages document, not a Word document. Changing the default application only tells Pages to open the document, not save it. Pages (rightfully) assumes that any Word doc you open in Pages is a doc you want to save in Pages format. So it's behaving normally by asking you to save it as a Pages document.
    Does this make sense?

  • How to create crop mars to save a document

Hi, I recently u[graded from a very old Illustrator version to CS6 and I noticed the crop tool is missing. It used to be really easy in the old version to drag the crop tool around the area in question and crop marks would be generated automatically. Then I could save and print just that area only. Now this tool is gone and I am having trouble with finding a way to define the area I want to save or print. When i generate crop marks and then save, all i get is a file with plenty of white around it that also shows the crop marks.... please help!!!

The crop has been intregrated into the artboards. Click on the art board tool then in the top tool bar, you can select the properties icon. In there, you can crop the artboard to the artwork and turn on print and video marks.

  • How can I disable iCloud without having my documents deleted?

    Hello everyone.
Before trying out iCloud, I had a number of documents on my ipad. I decided to try iCloud, but upon switching it back off, my documents were deleted off of pages. Upon restarting iCloud, they reappear.
So my question is, how do I turn off iCloud without having my documents deleted?

    > Syncing documents with iCloud is not enabled by default.
Then you shouldn't come on so strong. I have a 200 Gig Dropbox account and I have been wary from day 1 of using my 1 year MobileMe "free" storage that would eventually go away if I didn't pay Apple. I would not, and did not, set iCloud to save my documents.
I'd like to get the real answer from Apple emloyees. If you can not delete from iCloud without deleting on the computer, it's a bad design. What I'm talking about is very easy with Dropbox.
    thanks

  • I changed a password to a frequesntly used site. Firefox has not asked me if I want to save this new password and I have to keep changing the saved one to the correct one. How do I get it to save the new password?

I have websites I use for my employer that require a password. The employer requires these be changed periodically. Always before, if I changed the password, about the second or third time I tried to log in and changed the saved password to the correct one, Firefox would ask if I wanted to save the new password. It is not doing this now. How can I get it to save a new password? It keeps putting in the old one.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.
*You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
*To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting <b>Firefox will: Use custom settings for history</b>
    * Deselect: [ ] "Permanent Private Browsing mode"
The website may be using autocomplete=off to prevent Firefox from saving the name and password.

Firefox now always stores the old session, and you can access it by going to the History menu and selecting "Restore Previous Session"
If you want Firefox to display the message to save the session, it can be turned back on by changing some preferences.
    # Type '''about:config''' into the location bar and press enter
    # Accept the warning message that appears, you will be taken to a list of preferences
    # Locate the preference '''browser.tabs.warnOnClose''', if its value is set to '''false''', double-click on it to change its value to '''true'''
    # Repeat this for these 3 preferences '''browser.warnOnQuit''', '''browser.warnOnRestart''' and '''browser.showQuitWarning'''
If you always open the last set of tabs, an alternative approach is this:
    # Click the orange Firefox button, then select options to open the options window
    # Go to the General panel
    # Change the setting "When Firefox starts" to "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

  • How do I move files from my iMac to my Airport without getting 'AirPort can not be modified' message. File sharing is enabled and I'm not getting asked for a password. Thanks

How do I move files from my iMac to my Airport without getting 'AirPort can not be modified' message. File sharing is enabled and I'm not getting asked for a password. Thanks

What OS are you running.. this is usually only a problem in Mavericks.
If so I recommend you mount the hard disk manually..
    Use Go, Connect to server.
Type in the IP address if static.. eg
    AFP://10.0.1.1
Or the name.. but you will have issues unless the name is short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. if you are using bad names.. fix it by a full factory reset in airport utility and give it all names that comply to the above.
    Type in
AFP://TCname.local Where TCname is replaced with the actual name.
You will be asked for the password the first time which is public unless you changed it.. please remember to save this in the keychain.
Copy files then to a new directory you create on the TC.. do not place files inside the TM sparsebundle. Nor directly under the main directory.

  • After upgrading from Vista to Windows 7, Firefox lost all my stored passwords, never asks to save them, even though I've checked box for saving them, have made sure history is not cleared, and am not in Private Browsing.

In Windows 7, Firefox 8.0 does not ask to save passwords, and does not save, them, even though I checked the box to save passwords. I have confirmed that clearing history is not on and that I am not in Private Browsing. This is so frustrating, it almost makes me want to go back to Vista. I have looked at all the suggestions to fix the problem in "Help" and have followed the suggestions, and none of them help.

I have the TX2 1012NR and its can upgrade just fine!  Here is a few recommendations "only if u have the HP Upgrade program disks"
If you have them you can install a clean copy and delete everything... Do not use the use me first disk included because it prompts you to install an older BIOS....  Just use the windows 7 upgrade disk and start the process.  The clean install clears your entire drive but does not void your warranty!   When you use the use me first disk after the install it actually loads everything else needed to get you up in running.  The touchscreen driver and the HP Mediasmart programs will have to be downloaded from the HP support site.  Once again its recommended that if there were any programs installed delete them do not try to update them!  This causes issues and countless errors.  Specifically with touchscreen drivers etc uninstall them before installing the ones from HP support.  I found this was not the easy way to do it but the best way...  I also recommend that when doing any sort of BIOS update that you remove your Battery and leave it connected to a power cord only!  Last but not least if you really mess up and its under warranty... Send it to HP they will set it back up to factory defaults under Windows Vista with the more up to date BIOS installed.  I hope my information helps! Sure you might loose some programs but in the end your computer runs faster and smoother because all the programs installed are made for Windows 7....  Also they did release the Touch Pack for download from the Microsoft website here is a link telling more about the features and benefits and how to get it as it is a totally free download...
