How to obtain Mac OS 10.3 discs

Hi, I'm a new Mac user and I have to replace a hard drive in an IMac G5. There are no installation discs, and the data is not recoverable off the old hard drive.
I have called Apple and they told me they would have to "manufacture" my discs and it would cost like $48.
I have a couple questions. I want legitimate and legal discs, but does OS X work like Windows where I have to have to activate, or have to have an install key?
Can I get on EBay and buy a set of discs and use them? Would a copy of a friends discs work? I'm not sure of the legal issues with this and how it works. Please inform me.
On a PC I can use a copied XP disc as long as I have the installation key that is valid with the computer. I wouldn't suppose this is similar with the Mac, because I don't see any COA sticker or product key on the computer.

Hi Appleoddity,
First of all, Welcome to the  Discussion forums!
"And, if a copy a friends discs wont work, but I can buy a set of retail discs on Ebay? What exactly is the difference? What if the retail discs have already been used? How would I know if it is a legitimate deal?"
Depending upon what version you are looking for (on ebay or other third party resellers) just make sure the seller states "Full" retail install disks.
Personally, since you are starting from scratch, have you considered just purchasing a set of the latest OS disks (Leopard 10.5)?
Your iMac G5 meets the "Leopard 10.5 System Requirements" albeit you may have to upgrade the RAM in the computer if you don't have much installed already. Panther 10.3 at this point is becoming less and less usable with newer softwares and web features coming along.
If you decide to just purchase Panther disks the price quoted for replacement disks from Apple is probably a pretty good deal as even Panther now on ebay has been selling for more than the $48 Apple quoted you.

  • How to obtain original legitimate Leopard install discs?

Hi, I'm the proud owner of Snow Leopard but my poor old dad still has Tiger - he would dearly like to upgrade but requires Leopard prior to installing Snow Leopard. Trouble is Apple don't provide or sell older OS software - and the only place I can find is on eBay but it all looks dodgy to me.
Has anyone any idea how to obtain original legit Leopard OS?
    Many thanks, Chuckles

    Hi,
Here is the UK web site to get Snow Leopard.

I insert it into the mac, but the OS cannot load the disc and the disc cannot be ejected even i pressed the "eject" button.

This happened to a family members macbookpro. A mini-cd inserted, couldn't be mounted or ejected by the drive.
I cut a rectangle from a cereal box about two inches wide and 6 inches long. Abour an inch and half from one end in the middle I cut a notch and bent it down a little.

I dropped my mac pro. The disc drive plays but will not record. medium drive error. How hard is it to replace the drive my self. i see screws on the bottom. Could I just order a new internal drive and replace it? Or is it too complicated for the average person? Would be cheaper to buy an external drive than to replace internal one? Any advice is appreciated

How certain are you the superdrive ONLY is at fault?
That depends on your skill level, if you grew up tearing things apart and putting them together, its absurd how easy it is.
For some however its too daunting.   On a general skill level for the "average" person its about a 3 out of 10 in difficulty.
    Can you order same? yes.

  • Mac mini 2011  how do i restore with out a disc

i would like to restart my man mini so i can make it not have a password for everything can anyone help as im very new to mac only had it not even a week and sick of the password thing already

OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion includes a built in set of utilities in the Recovery System. Restart your Mac and hold down the Command key and the R key (Command-R), and keep holding them until the Apple icon appears, indicating that your Mac is starting up. After the Recovery System is finished starting up, you should see a desktop with a OS X menu bar and a "Mac OS X Utilities" application window. Note: If you see a login window or your own desktop and icons, it is possible that you didn't hold Command-R early enough. Restart and try again.
I do not believe that this will help your password issue but this is how you do a restore without a disc.

  • How do I do this:  "This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk?"

"This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk."

Stick the disk in, reboot holding c.
Disk Utility is a menu option about the 2 or 3rd screen in the installer. (don't install OS X!)
Because your booted form the installer disk, you can repair the disk.
Quit and exit the installer and reboot.
If your drive is not repaired, make a note of all what it says, for Apple to use.
Reboot and get your files off to a external drive,
Take the note and your comptuer to Apple for a warranty/Apple care call, they will replace the drive.

I have a colleague with a 2.33 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo on which he has Snow Leopard.  He needs to move to Lion 10.7 but can't find how, and his Mac (which is the same as mine) is not able to download Mountain Lion.
I see that when I downloaded Lion, I should have made a Disc as back up.  However, I did not do this, does anyone know how to move to Lion ?

I've installed windows 7 with the help of bootcamp on my macbook pro 2011.
Please help me how to install mac drivers for windows7 64 bit???

You either download drivers from within Boot Camp Assistant and save to USB FAT disk, or you insert and use 10.6.x OS X DVD when in Windows and install and run the SETUP from there.

Step 4: Install the Boot Camp Drivers for Windows
After installing Windows, install Mac-specific drivers and other software for Windows using your Mac OS X installation disc.  The Mac OS X disc installs drivers to support Mac components, including AirPort,built-in iSight camera, the Apple Remote, the trackpad on a portable Mac, and thefunction keys on an Apple keyboard.
The Mac OS X disc also installs the Boot Camp control panel for Windows and theApple Boot Camp system tray item.
To install the Boot Camp drivers:
1 Eject the Windows installation disc.
2 Insert the Mac OS X disc.  If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
    3 Follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed Windows  Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
Windows that appear only briefly during the installation don’t require your input.
If nothing appears to be happening, there may be a hidden window that you mustrespond to. Check the taskbar and look behind open windows.
Important: Do not click the Cancel button in any of the installer dialogs.
4 After your computer restarts, follow the instructions in the Found New Hardware  Wizard to update your software drivers (Windows XP only).
5 Follow the instructions for any other wizards that appear.
6 Check for updated Boot Camp drivers by using Apple Software Update or going to www.apple.com/support/bootcamp.
If You Have Problems Installing the Device Drivers
If it appears that the Boot Camp drivers weren’t successfully installed, try repairing them.
    To repair Boot Camp drivers:
1 Start up your computer in Windows.
2 Insert your Mac OS X installation disc.
3 If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
4 Click Repair and follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed Windows  Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
If you need to reinstall specific drivers, you can install one driver at a time. For example,if your built-in iSight camera isn’t working, you can reinstall just the iSight driver.
Individual drivers are in the Drivers folder on the Mac OS X installation disc.

Here is a way to get around not knowing the admin password on Macs.
To reset your OS X password without an OS X CD you need to enter terminal and create a new admin account:
       1. Reboot
       2. Hold apple + s down after you hear the chime.
       3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
              * mount -uw /
              * rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
              * shutdown -h now
       4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can simply delete the old one and you’re good to go again!

  • Mac OS X install disc not installing drivers in Windows 7

So I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate OEM 32 bit, and everything went (relatively) smoothly...
The problem is that now I'm at the desktop and when I insert the Mac OS X install disc, I am not able to install drivers. Instead, I am prompted to either "remote install Mac OS X" on my MacBook Air or install DVD and CD Sharing on my MacBook Air. I don't own a MacBook Air nor have I ever used either the Windows 7 install DVD or the Mac OS X install DVD on a MacBook Air. What's going on, and how else can I install the proper drivers? Also, please note that I used the Mac OS X install disc to install drivers for Windows XP previously. Long story short, that installation expired (lost my CD key) so I had to start over with Windows 7. I know the drivers are there, why aren't they working?

Sorry to state the obvious first, is it a Snow Leopard DVD?
You can always browse the DVD to the correct folder for the drivers.
