Opening AppleWorks Drawing docs in Pages

One of the frustrations some Pages users have expressed is not being able to open AppleWorks drawing docs. I've discovered a way to open AppleWorks drawings in Pages and keep the drawings editable. (The document has to be from a recent enough version of AppleWorks, 6.2.4 or 6.2.9.) It is basically just a matter of copying and pasting the drawing objects into an AW word processing document in the proper way, saving, then opening the doc in Pages.
To do this use the following procedure: Open the drawing document in AppleWorks, use "Select all" and then copy the selection. Now open a new Word Processor document in AppleWorks. If you don't have the tools palette visible, select Show Tools from the Window menu. Now click on the arrow pointer toward the top of the tool palette. (This deactivates the insert text cursor from the WP doc you just created. If you don't do this step your drawing objects will be pasted as a single uneditable graphic.)
Now do the Paste command and everything from your Drawing document is pasted into the WP doc, but still as a collection of individual drawing objects. Now save this document with whatever name you want. Then open the resulting document in Pages. It WILL open and all the drawing objects are still editable. I even found that you can still ungroup objects that were grouped in AW.
I doubt this is a perfect solution, but I was pleasantly surprised to see it work as well as it did in my limited testing.

Unfortunately, this is the only way to get those AppleWorks draw documents into Pages. I believe I described much the same process three years ago when Pages 1/iWork '05 was released. Back then, I don't think text boxes remained editable, but they do in Pages 2 & 3. Links between text boxes may be lost, but they are easily recreated in Pages.
I think that page layout mode in Pages 3 is very similar to AppleWorks draw & am surprised that this function doesn't exist. It's something I've left feedback for the Pages team about more than once.

Opening Appleworks 6 documents in iWork--how to?

I am just "moving into" my new iMac with iWork software. I have several years' worth of documents created in Appleworks 6 in my eMac--dutifully backed up and thinking that they would be available to me forever. Ha!
I read that iWork can open Appleworks documents, but when I tried to open some of them I had backed-up to a CD, I got a message that "This is not an Appleworks document" and a blank page icon. Please help--I read that iWork can open Appleworks documents, but how? What do I need to do?

AppleWorks documents can be many things, wordprocessing, spreadsheets, databases, drawings, paint etc.
Pages can only handle the word processing ones and they have to be at least version 6.
AppleWorks still functions under OSX so the alternative is to open them in AppleWorks and copy and paste the contents across or find some intermediary file format to export to.

How do I secure individual documents in Lion?

I'm sure this question has been answered but I can't seem to figure out how to secure individual documents in Lion.
Here is what I'm trying to do;
I'm scanning or saving from various sources certain forms or files to Lion and keeping in documents. Which works great, but I can't figure out how to secure these documents individually.
Would someone mind pointing out my error and perhaps recommend a resource where I can learn more of these basic Mac operations?

1. open automator (it's in applications)
2. when it asks you what you want to make, pick service.
3. at the top, where it says "service receives selected", pick files or folders
4. where it says "in", pick Finder.
4.1 on the left, under library, select files & folders
4.2 to the right, pick New Disc Image and drag it over to the right
5. Size: Size disk image to fit contents
6. check encrypt
7. when done: unmount and return the image file
8. close or save the window; give it a name, like "encrypt".
9. try it out. Select the file you want to encrypt in the finder; control click on it to open the contextual menu; scroll down to services, and pick the service you just created.
10. It should make a disc image and ask you to create a password.
11. when you open the disc image, it will ask for the password, and then a virtual disc (looks like a little generic white drive) will open. In that virtual disc will be the decrypted file.
12. you can delete the original file and work from the decrypted version in the virtual disc.
13. When you close the decrypted version and either eject the virual disc (by dragging it to the trash) or restart or shut off your computer, the changes should be saved in the encrypted disc image.
14. let me know how it works.

In order to "study" some documents (underline, write comments, etc as it was presented in the Maverick Video Show), i added some pdf documents to iBooks (on Maverick).
How to open it/them? when i click on a "book" (document), nothing happens. Why?

The annotations tools you describe only work on iBooks, not PDFs.
when you click on a PDF in iBooks Library, the document should open in Preview. Is that not happening?

How to open with uploaded document

Hi, I need upload my document online and then preview the uploaded document to check if it worked. Unforturnatly, I was unable to open the preview, error massege stated an error occured repeatedly, but I could save it and then open it which is not fit the case of intended party. The document is word doc, with the microsoft word 2004. the ducument was created on MacBook OS X 10.6.8. I am wodering if it is that becasue the microsoft word 2004 is too old for this particular site. (I was ABLE to open the uploaded document in different sites).
If this it the case, how can I get free and relative newer Microsoft Word?

Hmm, what about *.numbers documents that are not on my iCloud?
I need to open a document that is located on my hard drive. When I try to open it using latest Numbers (3.0.1) it says "The document can't be opened.". But when I try to open this document using Numbers 2.3 it says "The document does not have a valid format."
Any ideas?

AppleWorks 6 isn't bundled with the MacBook's anymore, so you'll have to buy it. This will open the AppleWorks 5 documents and give your Dad a familiar productivity suite to use on the MacBook. (AW 6 is very similar to AW 5.)
Alternatively, you could buy iWork or Mac Office. There are 30 day trials for both on the MacBook I think. However, both products will only open AppleWorks 6 word processing documents.
While AppleWorks 6 will open the AppleWorks 5 documents, another tool that will do so is either icWord or OneClickConvert. Both products are made by the same company. Trial versions are available here:

I have Link to URL UI element in webdynpro java layout - on click of the link we need to open the pdf document from KM respository.
KM Document location : irj/go/km/docs/documents/RHPortal//USA/A/Test/Employee_details.pdf.
Once this is transported to Test and Production portals , we need to retrieve the KM document from the respective portal location through the Link to URL UI element .

Hi,
If you set the link to your document in a Context attribute by using a relative path this should work just fine.
Example:
wdContext.currentContextElement().setUrl("/irj/go/km/docs/documents/RHPortal//USA/A/Test/Employee_details.pdf");
Bind that attribute to the reference property of the LinkToURL element.
