How to open iPhoto
I recently lost my iPhoto library after having a new hard drive installed on my iMac. Now the new iPhoto won't open. Instead a logo comes up that says "To use iPhoto 11, you need to upgrade your photo library". When I click on Continue the whole logo just disappears and nothing happens. I think the iPhoto I now have is iPhoto 9.1.3. That's what the software installer says. I did actually get it working once and put the first few photos in it. But now it won't open. Do I need to purchase the latest iPhoto to correct this problem?
I think I lost all my old photos from the original HD.

If you only have a few photos in the library quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library to the desktop, depress the option key and launch iPhoto and create a new library. Then open the library on the desktop and go to the masters folder. Drag it to the iPhoto window
As to your old photos, restore your back of it and use iPhoto Library Manager to merge it into your new library

You simply connect the hard drive with the library and double-click the iPhoto library on the external drive to open it in iPhoto. That will work, if you are using iPhoto 9.6, the only version of iPhoto, that is compatible with MacOS X 10.10.
Or hold down the alt/options key while double clicking the iPhoto icon. This will bring up a library chooser panel. Select your library on the external drive.
If the iPhoto Library has been created by an older version of iPhoto it will need to be upgraded to the new version, and that may require temorary additional free storage on your system drive and the drive with the library.
If the library has been created by iPhoto 7.1.2 or earlier, you need to install and run iPhoto Library Upgrader, see: iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrader -

One guess is that you have upgraded form a pre iphoto '09 version and have not yet run the iphoto library upgrader - it is in the utilities folder in your applications folder - double click on it to run and then launch iPhoto

iPhoto is an application that's part of the iLife software suite (it's a separate product, but a copy is bundled with and pre-installed on Macs). Newer versions of iLife can read libraries from previous versions, but not necessarily the other way around. If you use a newer version of iPhoto, it will ask you if you want to convert to the new library format. If you say yes, the format is changed.
Once the format is changed, the library cannot be used with an older version of iPhoto.
The user can do any one of a number of things. The easiest solution is simply to get a current version of iLife and install it and use the current version of iPhoto. iLife '09 works fine on both Leopard and Snow Leopard.
The user can also go to the folder where the photos are stored and reimport them into his older version of iPhoto. Go to the user's Pictures folder, and find the folder labelled 'iPhoto Library'. Change the name to something snappy like 'old iPhoto Library' and then open it. The original images are found in the sub-folder named 'Originals'. You can simply select everything in that sub-folder and drag it onto the iPhoto application icon and iPhoto will start and import all the pictures. You lose the metadata iPhoto had associated with the photos, but you do have the photos back in the older version of iPhoto.
I've never tried it, but you may even be able to get back some of the metadata if you are clever at programming. iPhoto libraries are just 3 things: image files, some Objective-C object dumps, and XML. The images and XML are simple enough to deal with, you just need to figure out how to make sense of the binary object files (Objective-C's answer to Java's POJO data files). -

If the library were in a default location when you used iPhoto, then it would automatically open in Photos.
If Photos cannot locate the library, then open Photos by holding the option key down when pressing the Photos icon in the dock, and specify where the iPhoto library is right now. -
Opening iphoto album images in photoshop etc
Hi - does anybody know how to open iphoto albums and import your photos into applications like Photoshop and Illustrator? When you search the iphoto library from within these applicaitons it displays your photo files by date and then separate sub folders - very infuriating! If you're using illustrator and want to import say 8 images, you have to drag them from iphoto library to the desk top so when you import them you can find them instantly. Copying everything over like this has virtually rendered my iphoto app as completely useless. Annoying because I like it very much otherwise. Any suggestions?

The way you are doing is the best way (exporting to the desktop). If an application supports drag and drop, you can drag from the iPhoto viewing window into your application.
If you just want to edit a photo in PS, you can set up PS as your external editor in iPhoto's Preferences.
From iPhoto Help menu:
"Choosing what happens when you click the Edit button
When you want to edit a photo, you can have the photo open in iPhoto's edit view, in a separate window, in full-screen view, or in another application.
To choose a preference:
Choose iPhoto > Preferences.
Click General at the top of the Preferences window.
Under Edit Photo, select one of the following options:
"In main window" opens the photo in the main viewing area.
"In separate window" opens the photo in a separate window.
"Using full screen" opens the photo in full-screen view.
"In application" opens the photo in another application you choose.
To open a photo in its own window when "Main window" is selected, press the Option key when double-clicking the photo.
To open a photo in edit view when "Separate window" is selected, press the Option key when double-clicking the photo.
Note: Any video clip you imported into iPhoto will always open in QuickTime Player when you double-click it."
To have the edits reflected in iPhoto you must "save" a flattened image with the same name. -

There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:

You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.

Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: File -> Reveal in FInder will produce a Finder window with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
All of the above are a: safer and b: faster than surfing the old Library folders.

When I open iPhoto 9.2.1 it says that my library needs to be upgraded but when I upgrade the library I am trying to open (33 GB worth of pictures from 2006) the new application says it cannot read the files and how to find them on the system to reimport?! and then I'd like to erase the original files since the space requirement is huge!!!! Why is upgrading software iPhoto such a pain. I've gotta get a presentation done and all I get for my money is roadblock!!!
hello, it sounds like the library is damaged.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. -
When I open Iphoto, I see all my photos for a second and then they disappear and only a white dotted box appears. Then I click on it and for photos is a triangle with an exclamation point. It doesn't happen to all but quite a lot. how to I get them back
Have you recently deleted photos using the finder or run clean up software? Is so restore your backup
If not the backup your iPhoto Library and launch iPhoto while depressing the option and command keys. Rebuild your database

How do i solve this problem? Dpes rebuilding your photo library delete all your photos? I have thousands of photos with no back up HELP!!Well if you have no back up you need to make a back up now. It might be too late, but you're not going to know until you fix this.
Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
Then try:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
