How to open the disk tray?

Working with an old G4 tower, and OS9.
No eject key on the keyboard, and the eject option in the menu at the top is greyed out.
F12 doesn't work either.
I can get it open by going via iTunes, but surely there should be a less convoluted way of doing this?

Hi-
"Open tray" does exactly that, opens an empty tray.
"Eject" dismounts a loaded disk, and then opens the tray.
If you don't have an extended, or Pro keyboard (which has an eject button, which also opens and closes the tray) opening the tray is done manually- push the button on the tray cover. Thats how I did it for years in OS 7 thru 9...
Pushing f12 should eject a cd/dvd, if there is a disk to be dismounted. If not, nothing happens.
Holding down the f12 for for a period of time is for OS 10.1.2 and later.
See this for other magic keys:

  • OS 10.4, non-Apple keyboard, How to open the CD tray?

    How do you open the CD tray with OS 10.4 and a non-Apple keyboard?
    F12 used to work but this was changed in 10.4 to trigger the stupid Dashboard.

    F12 does not work for me, but I accept that if other people can make it work, then I need to figure out why it doesn't work for me. Glad to know there is a solution on the horizon.
    Regarding adding the CD eject control to the Finder menu; that's a great idea. I should have remembered that was possible. For reference, the location of that menu add-on and others is:
    System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras

  • How to open the CD tray in a Poserbook that does not start up?

    When I start up my G5, I get the gray screen with the apple for about 3 minutes and then it shuts down. I have disconnected my peripherals, performed a safe boot and reset the pram. Now,I should insert my system disk.
    This is not easy,since the machine refuses to open the tray. I have pressed the button before, after and in sync with the gong, to no avail. The tray just doesn't open.
    Any ideas,please?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    No Powerbook has a G5 processor. Your subject line inquires about a Powerbook (assuming you made a simple typographical error), yet the body of your post says g5.
    If it is a Powerbook G4, which it would say under the screen, then you just need to follow these directions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2179?viewlocale=en_US
    If that doesn't work, and it is a 15" or 17" Powerbook G4, see if the clock battery needs replacing at an authorized service center.
    Otherwise you may have a logicboard issue, or bad RAM.
    Intel MacBooks and Intel MacBook Pros, are labeled under the screen too. If you are talking a desktop, that's known as either a PowerMac G5 or an iMac G5, or Intel Mac Pro, or iMac Intel Core machine. To tell those apart, see this article:
    Mac Pro
    PowerMac G5
    are all iMac Intel Core2Duo.
    iMac Intel CoreDuo and Core2Duo if the EMC# on the base says: 2104, 2105, 2110, 2114, 2118, 2111, 2133, 2134. Otherwise it is a G5.
    All G4s and G5s can use the above Apple article to eject discs.
    All Intel Macs can not, and may need other directions, so getting the identification of your machine precisely is important before we proceed. So please tell us what Mac model you actually have?

  • How do I open the disc tray if it goes straight to console?

    I am having an issue where my G5 boots straight to the console. I have been told to re-install the os, but nobody has been able to tell me how to open the disc tray to put the install disc in.
    anybody know?
    thanks,
    mvw

    Press the mouse button or the eject key or F12 at startup. You can also press the Option, Command, O, and F keys, and enter 'eject cd' followed by 'mac-boot' without the quote marks.

  • How do you open the DVD tray on a K430 without using Windows Explorer?

    How do you open the DVD tray on a K430 without using Windows Explorer? I can't find a button on or below the door.  Am I missing something?  Additionally, will the K430 boot from a DVD/CD if it finds one in the DVD tray instead of the hard disk?  Please help. Thanks.

    hi penguin247,
    Regarding your questions:
    1. Can you try to press the eject symbol on the DVD bay and observe if the DVD tray comes out.
    Link to picture
    2. By default, the HDD is set as the first boot device and the ODD second on the K430. You will need to change the boot order or continuously tap F12 during POST to boot from the ODD (assuming you have a bootable media inserted).

  • How do I open the CD tray using Windows Keyboard

    How do I open the CD tray of my eMac using a Windows Keyboard that does not have a eject button? If I use uControl Program to switch the alt and Window Keys (the option and ⌘ Keys) I can't use the iJect Program.

    shulmice,
    While not a perfect answer since you have to be logged in before you can open the tray, you can put an eject icon in the menu bar by double-clicking on ~/System/ Library/ CoreServices/ Menu Extras/ Eject.menu

  • How come i can't open the sim tray even if i use the small pin?

    how come i can't open the sim tray even if i use the small pin?

    Press firmly and push either the sim eject tool or a small paperclip straight in until the tray pops out.
    If that doesn't work make an appointment at an Apple store.

  • I can't open the DVD tray

    I can't open the DVD tray. There's nothing inside. I hear a sound (a grrrr) but it won't open.
    I had that 2-3 times in the last 5 years and I always managed to open it by pushing the "DVD ROM drive open button" while I restart but not this time.
    I also tried to put a paper clip in the little hole but that doesn't work either.
    In the Apple help site, they say push the "eject media key" on your keyboard; I didn't know where that is but I know now it's the F12 key; when I push it I hear a sound coming from the tray (like a electric screwdriver) but nothing happens.
    So what can I do ?
    I saw that Andrew Favret had the same problem in October and Don Archibald said:
    • Boot or restart the machine, immediately press the Option key, keep it held down. This will bring up Startup Manager. Once Startup Manager has finished loading, press the key combo Command-. (Command-Periodkey). This should open the tray.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I tried the "Option" key. The Start Up Manager appeared: A display with my 5 drives in the middle, and a Right Arrow icon on the right.
    I did click on the right arrow and it started to load normally as it does when you turn the computer on.
    So I try the whole thing again and now instead of clicking on the right arrow, I tried the command and period key. I hear again, a sound coming from the tray and I see the icon for "eject" on the screen but nothing happens. Tried 5-6 times. And the F12 key don't have any effect at this time.
    If I had a disc in the tray, I'm sure the icons for the DVD drive will appear but the tray is empty.
    Not sure if there's a relation but I just upgraded that same day to a new version of iTunes (from version 7 to 8.0.2) and 3 other upgrades: QuickTime player (from 7.1.3 to 7.5.5) Plus Java and Security something.
    Usually there is a CD/DVD in the tray that won't eject, but you say the tray is empty. Are there any other users of you Mac, especially kids? Someone may have placed something in the tray that is causing the jam.
    Here's the usual fixes.
    First try a Restart while holding down the mouse button.
    If that doesn’t work, look at these links:
  • Iogear and tiger, can not open the cd tray
    I have the iogear miniview that was working great with my old g4 and xp box, but now I have a g5...great of course, and it does work well, I can see my USB drives, etc.
    BUT..... when I try to open the cd tray with the keyboard arrow, it doesn't work. I have to plug my apple keyboard directly into the computer to get it to open the tray.
    Not the worse problem I've encountered, but I would hope there is a work aorund, anyone know?
    thanks!
    Try "Terminal" found in Utilities. Type in at the prompt <man drutil> (without the chevrons). This will list a set of usefull commands for intracting with cd/dvd drives. The one to try for opening the tray ( or ejecting a disk from a slot drive which of course has no tray) is <drutil tray open>.
    I use laptops and found this (drutil tray eject) to get a disk out of the unfamiliar G5 of a friend before we found the
    "eject" key on the keyboard.
    Have also found <drutil getconfig> helpful to get information on a problematical dvd writer.
    I personally keep "Terminal" to my admin accounts because of its danger potentials.
    there is no disk:) i have no idea what this warning means.. i have restarted and nothing.. i updated itunes and same warning.. there is no disk in the drive at all..
    infact i made sure i was in a room with no other disks.. Help??
    A few things to try:
    • Restore Permissions, using Disk Utility (in ~Applications/Utilities)
    • Set the correct Ownership & Permissions for the iTunes folder:
    Select the iTunes folder in ~/Users/YourUsername/Music.
    Get Info (command-I).
    Expand 'Ownership & Permissions' and 'Details:'
    You must read: 'You can Read & Write': if not, change it.
    Click on the 'Apply to enclosed items...' button.
    Hope this helps.
    disk utility can't repair the Macintosh HD, asking toback up all files as possible? and how to  reformat the disk?
    Some problems can indeed be fixed this way. But working from Recovery_HD or Disk Warrior DVDs and working in the restricted environment those provide can be difficult. You can literally spend days working on this problem (while your regular work is unavailable) only to discover the old drive is unsalvageable.
    There is no way to know up front whether you are facing a major Hardware failure or a minor software glitch, or something in between. Often you are forced to work from the drive you no longer trust. I continue to recommend you do this work from a different, fully functioning Mac OS X booted from a different drive.
    If you have had the foresight to (as The hatter often recommends) clone your virgin install onto another drive for use in such situations, you will be able to recover from such problems in record time. If not, my previous recommendations stands:
    Buy a new Drive. Or  two. Install Mac OS X from scratch on a new drive, and get your Mac running again. Later, you can use the full power of Mac OS X to attempt to rescue your data, if needed. Then Zero the old drive, to see if it can hold data again reliably.
    If the old drive eventually provides some needed data, and is salvageable, Merry Christmas.
