How to operate the trackpad

I have just purchased a new MacBookPro with retina display. I am still learning how to use the trackpad because prior to buying this laptop I always used a mouse with my iMac. I have looked at the Systems Preferences and see that I should be able to Zoom by pinching with finger and thum or alternatively double tapping with two fingers.However this does not happen, neither can I rotate the pages as suggested. I have all the boxes checked so is there something else I should be doing?
Also can anyone tell me if I install iCloud will it automatically transfer data from my iMac on which I don't have iCloud. I would like to be able to sync things like mail, but I don't want to transfer every single file and application.
This laptop is offering to install iCloud but I am not sure I want to if it is going to transfer all.
Many thanks

Are you using any hand lotion. I have heard this can confuse the trackpad because of the oils in the lotion. You could try cleaning the trackpad and washing your hands to see if these gestures become available.
Have no real knowledge of how icloud works but for it to work at all the mac must be able to use icloud. So it would need to be installed on a mac for it to work on that system. If your version of os x is older and does not have icloud then there is no way for you to sign on to it from that mac.

    please let me know how to do the trackpad test

    What model year is it? If older than a 2011 model, and even some early 2011 models, you will need the original install discs that came with it.
    If older than a 2011 model then you use the Online Internet Recovery system to erase the drive, format it Mac Extended and then reinstall OS X.
    To access that online recovery system at startup hold down the Command + Option/Alt + r key and keep them held down until you see a globe on the screen.

  • How to center the TrackPad pointer on startup

    Hi guys (and ladies)!
    New on this forum, I confess I didn't have much time to prowl it in search for an answer to the question in the tittle of this post. I apologize for this, but the question itself is pretty straightforward: I'd like my TrackPad pointer to appear in the center of the screen on startup, the way it does on... err, um, you know, the OS from Redmond... You know?
    I find it a hassle to have to dislodge it from its upper left corner every time I boot up my MBP, especially considering it takes several attempts to move it, with the Apple menu usually appearing when all I need is to click on a Dock icon...
    I read somewhere that an AppleScript could be devised that would remedy to my problem, but I'm not fluent in AppleScript, so if you guys suggest something along this route, please make it understandable for the newbie that I am!
    Thanks in advance...

    OK, that's one way to put it, but I already have a PC with Windoze installed (I happen to beta-test Seven like a half-dozen billion other people...), so if I wanted to run Windoze, I'd do it on my other computer.
    No, seriously, doesn't anyone know of a script that would center the pointer on the screen of my MBP when it boots up? Like giving it new spacial coordinates (e.g. x=720, y=450 for my 1440x900px display)?
    OK, I'll make it simple (???): how do you instruct the pointer to act the way I've just described via AppleScript?

  • HT2474 how to operate the dock - when i pull up the dock Command Tab, the dock appears centre screen but  can select an item to open

    Hi
    I am trying to use the dock like i have seen on other screens, by pressing command and tab - i can pull up the dock so it appears and cycles through, but when i try and select an item it just disappears, i am holding hte command button when selecting it or it just disappears. any helps appreciated.
    thanks

    That's not the Dock.. the Dock is the thing at the bottom of the screen that shows apps and a trash can.
    Regarding command-tab, the window that brings up should show all running apps. As long as you hold down command, it will stay open. Selecting an item in that window should cause that app to come to the front. However, if the app in question does not have any open windows, there may not be much change on the screen, so you could miss it. Keep an eye on the menu next to the Apple menu, which has the name of the current app. Does that menu change to whatever app you selected using command-tab?

  • How to turn on trackpad without mouse

    I have disabled my trackpad and use a mouse to operate the computer. I have left my mouse behind and now cannot use the computer because the trackpad is off. Does anyone know how to turn the trackpad back on without the mouse?
    Crucially I can get into system prefs and then get to accessibility but I cannot uncheck the box "ignore built in trackpad...etc" .
    Can anyone help? This is quite urgent.
    Thanks

    There's no easy way, but if it's such a large email that it takes a while to send, if you go into Airplane Mode (Settings, and it's the top option) as soon as you power on, you should be fine. Don't forget, the phone has to connect to the 3G network, Mail has to initialise, find the mail server, handshake and figure out what needs to be done before any mail gets sent.
    Alternatively, if you want zero risk, find a location with no 3G signal (subway/underground, elevator/lift etc) and switch on the phone there

  • GRC AChow to operate the scheduler (Daemon manager )  with a WebDispatcher?

    Hi all,
    A technical question:
    We access the application via a Web dispatcher (hc001wck: 80) which leads us either to AS Java hc001wdm: 52000 or to the Java AS hc001wdn: 52100.$
    Everything works well for the Java "transaction" but the backgroundjobs fail to communicate with the Daemon manager (scheduler). The Daemon seems to work very well (ok status on each server and bgstatus ok when the call via WebDisp).
    The settings are made via SQL update in the table virsa_cc_config; following configuration
    105

    J2EE Engine Protocol

    I tried to set it on one of the AS but this does not!
    I have been testing all day and nothing works on jobs background.
    The question is: how to operate the scheduler with a WebDispatcher?
    Best regards

    Hi Vincent,
    What about adding the port to the URL for config parameter 107?

    Hope it helps. Best regards,

  • I updated to Firefox 4.0.1 and can no longer use the thumb/finger spreading feature on the trackpad of my Mac Powerbook (Mac OSX 10.6.7) to enlarge text on websites. How do I restore this function?

    I updated to Firefox 4.0.1 and can no longer use the thumb/finger spreading feature on the trackpad of my Mac Powerbook (Mac OSX 10.6.7) to enlarge text on websites. How do I restore this function?

    * [/questions/777886]
    Some gestures have been removed in Firefox 4.
    You can restore the zoom feature by changing the values of the related prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page.
    browser.gesture.pinch.in -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReduce</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.in.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.out -> <b>cmd_fullZoomEnlarge</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.out.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.latched -> <b>false</b>
    To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
    If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
    You can use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a pref more easily.
