How to order hard drive sled screws for MacPro HD sled?

I got a refurb. 2.66 and it working great. However, when I tried to change out the Apple/Seagate drive the last screw looked like someone had used the wrong sized screw drive and slightly stripped the Philips head slots on the top of the screw. I managed to get it out, but would like to replace it.
Does anyone have a source for these. They look different than the usual screws that fasten hard drives down.

There's nothing unique about the threads on those screws. I've used regular screws that ship with some of my drives when I misplaced my sled screws. Any screw that matches the threads on the hard drive will work.
If you don't have any, go to the nearest Frys Electronics or order some "anti vibration" screws:

  • How Much External Hard Drive Partition Recommended for Audio Recording?

    Hi,
I have a glyph 300 gigabyte drive. Does anyone have thoughts on how to partition it? I was thinking 200 gb for samples, etc and 100gig for recording audio? Is that too much or too little for recording audio? Or should I use all 300 gigs for audio recording. I also want to do video editing in FCP eventually.
    Thanks

Okay...There are 3 guys and each has a basket full of marbles. The 1st guy has a basket full of red marbles, the second guy has a basket full of blue marbles, and you have a basket full of red and blue marbles. All three of you have your left hand tied behind your back. You are in competition with the other two guys, you are on your own and they work as a team. Someone starts shouting give me 3 reds and 2 blue marbles. You reach in your basket and grab 3 reds and 2 blues as fast as you can, but the other guys are way ahead of you because there are 2 of them and they each only have to worry about grabbing one color of marble at a time. So you lose the contest badly... that is why you need at least
2 hard drives instead of just one (whether partitioned or not). Buy an external firewire drive. you'll be glad you did.

  • How to order hard drive PCB?

    thanks alot

The thing is I have important stuff on my hdd. At least if I can make it run for 1-2 hours just to bring back my data
If I extract the disks from the hdd and replace them with another 500GB hdd disk. will it work at least for 1 hour? I know it sounds crazy but I have to do something. I know my data is there, there should be a way to get them back
Or it could only work for 5min.  Any contaminants will trash the hard drive, possibly permanently.  Hard drives are assembled in clean rooms because even something as small as a smoke particle can cause a hard drive failure.  Unless you have access to a clean room, it is nearly impossible to physical open a hard drive and expect to be able to access the data again.  (If you're really lucky or sign a deal in blood with you-know-who. )
The previous company I worked for had to send a drive for recovery.  This was several years ago and it was only a 20GB hard drive, but it cost us $25,000.  (Yes twenty five thousand.)  This was to cover us from a multi-million dollar liability so obviously the math works out in that case.
You are normally charged a minimum fee and additional per byte recovered.  So if anything, the costs to you now is likely to be higher since hard drives have gotten larger, so the bytes recovered tend to increase.
    Luck be with thee!

  • Help, hard drive sled 4 torx screws are different types

I have a late 2007 Santa Rosa MacBook. I was a Boy Scout and try to always be prepared. So I ordered a spare Seagate ST9160821AS drive. The copy went just fine. So I decided to order a spare hard drive sled from Ifixit.
There I notice the 4 torx T-8 screws are not the same. 2 have "shoulders / built in washers" while 2 do not.
So I remove my original sled and see the same 2 with shoulders and 2 without torx screws.
Problem is I didn't pay any attention as to where they originally went.
So if you have a virgin MacBook (or knowledge), could you tell me where the shouldered screws go. Maybe the end with the pull out tab or on the same side? I do not know.

Thank you for the reply. I have carefully studied the 4 holes in the sled and they all seem to be the same diameter.

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.
Here's a cheap SATA external hard drive case on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/HDE-SATA-Hard-Drive-Enclosure/dp/B001AAVA08/ref=pd_bxgy_pc _text_b
If you don’t have the tools to open up the MacBook OWC has a set for $5

  • Hard Drive Sled/Caddy Problem - screws/washers?

One of my hard drive sleds (after changing up HDDs a few times) is starting to give me trouble.
The plastic thing that sits beneath the screw is basically damaged by use, which I think this is causing it to not align properly with the mobo, (i've tried this sled with two confirmed working HDDs) - screw seems fine.
As oppose to coughing up £20 to buy a new sled (seriously?) - I wonder if anyone could recommend me what I need to buy to replace the screws and the plastic thing that the screw sits on top of.
Attached image shows where grey plastic thing (washer?) in question no longer stacks up (it's the one you see first, doesn't go through all the way)
Please let me know if you need more info
    Thank you!

Of course I cannot see what condition the washer is in from your photo.
But have you taken the drive off, removed the screw competely, and tried to position the washer so that it has some rubber on each side of the sled?
If that does not work, those screws are not really available for less than the US$30 price of a new Apple sled. And most third-party sleds do not use those washers at all.
So what you should do is improvise. Perhaps you could cut a small piece of some sort of rubber sheet (a rubber "jar opener", perhaps) and drill a hole in the center to place between the drive and the sled.

  • How do I capture tape-based media to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The manual says to import tape footage directly into fcpx, but then I lose my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

In FCP X How do I capture tape-based media (hdv clips)- which I want to import-to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The FCPX manual says to import tape footage directly into final cut, which works, but then I lose  my external hard drive    Do I  have to import it into an event, then copy it over to an external hard drive?  On Larry Jordan's tutorial, he has 3 external hard drives that show up on his monitor WHILE he imports his tape based media.  How is that done?  I can only get either the camera to appear OR my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

Thanks for your response, but that doesn't solve the problem.  Yes, the LaCie hard drive has 2 firewire ports-
I have always done what you suggest (works fine in FCP7), but in FCPX when I do that the camcorder icon
does not appear.  It only shows up when I DIRECTLY import the footage via firewire.  ????

  • How to install hard drive into mac pro

how to install hard drive into mac pro

I recently bought a new 2TB internal sata drive for my Macpro.
The installation was easy, but I'm not sure what to do next.
For one, should I partition the drive?
My purpose for buying the drive was to use it as my go to drive for Parallels. I used to run my music studio on Windows based machines, and my older project files require a windows OS to recover. I installed Parallels so I can have my studio running Mac and Windows programs which will enable me to access my old project files and take them into my newer Protools system.
So now, I've installed my new hard drive, but I'm not sure if I should partition it....And!? I'm not sure how to designate that drive for my virtual pc on Parallels. I was able to allocate enough disk space to parallels in order to load my music software, but at this point, I'm not sure if I've just promised it disk space from my original partitioned drive (which only has about 350 GB left on it).
I would love to be able to make one internal drive available for Parallels, and the other available for the rest of my OSX. When I use Parallels, I still would like to save some extra information on the 2TB drive as well from my dekstop running OSX.
I hope this makes sense! Your help is much appreciated!

  • Need advice on hard drive set up for a Mac Pro

Just changed over to a Mac and would like some advice on hard drive setup. Have a Mac Pro 2.8 with the 320 gig hard drive.
I plan to run Windows with MS Flight Simulator and Office 2007 through VMware Fusion/Boot Camp.
Will be transferring camcorder video to edit and make DVDs. Lots of music, podcasts, photos, and short videos will be stored.
I'm planning to buy additional hard drives.
Any suggestions on how many/what size hard drives to get.
What should the stock 320 hard drive be used for?
Where would I put the Windows stuff? What format/partion size?
    Where should the backup go?
I've seen many positive comments on Western Digital Caviar Black drives, would that be a good choice?

    Welcome to Discussions!
    Here's my (current) setup.
4 x WD640AAKS. As Hatter says, brilliant drives. Whisper quiet and very fast. Plus extremesly good-priced.
    Drives 1 and 2:
Raid0 boot volume. Also set as Photoshop scratch. I ran lots of tests on different setups and this is faster than having a separate scratch drive, almost the same as having a separate internal raid0 for scratch. But I felt I couldn't motivate that use of harddrive bays for the little extra it offered in speed.
Drive 3: User account on first partition and a second, 23GB partition for Windows XP.
Drive 4: Time Machine, which only backs up the User account partition.
I clone the startup drive to an external regularly. In fact I have three bootable clones, one OS X with latest updates, one with OS X with latest updates and my applications, and one of the boot volume before any major updates - overkill perhaps... I use the 320GB OEM drive in an FW800 enclosure for this.

  • How to find hard drives connected to router on my mac

how to find hard drives connected to router on my mac

    Hello Thatguy1233,
It sounds like you have a Time Machine back up of your computer that you would like to restore. You may be able to use the following article to restore that backup:
OS X Lion: Recover your entire system
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph4351
Make sure your Time Machine backup disk is connected and turned on. If your backup disk is on a network, make sure your computer is on the same network.
Choose Apple menu > Restart, and then hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys while the computer restarts.
Select “Restore from a Time Machine Backup,” and then click Continue.
Depending on your type of backup disk, do one of the following:
If you use an external disk, select it and click Continue.
If you use a Time Capsule, choose your AirPort network from the AirPort menu on the right side of the menu bar, and then select your Time Capsule and click “Connect to Remote Disk.”
If you use a network disk, select it and click “Connect to Remote Disk.”
If necessary, enter the name and password you use to connect to your backup disk, and then click Connect.
Select the date and time of the backup you want to restore, and then follow the onscreen instructions.
After you restore your system from a Time Machine backup, Time Machine may perform a full backup at the next scheduled backup time. This is normal. Time Machine resumes incremental backups after the full backup is completed.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

How come my hard drive is not showing up on the desktop?

Those are preferences you speify from INSIDE The Finder:
    Finder > Preferences:

  • Wipe my hard drive clean except for the OS whats the best way?

I need to wipe my hard drive clean except for the OS whats the best way?

From Kappy (note: with this method, you will need to update to the present OS version using the appropriate Combo Update from Apple Downloads.)
Boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities (Installer menu if using Panther or Jaguar) menu. After DU loads select the startup volume from the left side list then click on the Erase tab. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then click on the Options button. Select the one pass Zero Data option and click on the OK button. Then click on the Erase button.
Note: You can skip the Zero Data option if you are not concerned about removing sensitive personal data from the hard drive. If you choose to skip this part of the process then it is possible for others to recover data from the hard drive. The Zero Data procedure will prevent others from getting access to your personal information.
This process will take 30 minutes to several hours depending upon the size of the hard drive. After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Now complete the OS X installation. At the completion of the installation do not restart the computer. Instead just shut it off. The next user will be presented with the Setup Assistant when they turn on the computer just as it would if new out of the box.

  • How do I find how large my Hard Drive is? Please help!

Recently been getting messages saying that my startup disk is full. And I'm thinking about getting a Time Capsule. But the thing is, I can't find out how big my hard drive is. I clicked the apple, then About this mac, and I could only find "Memory", which was only 1 GB. I know that can't be it, because my iTunes is over 90 GB. But I can't find the hard drive. Either I'm blind, or it's not there.
    Please help
    Thanks

Click more info in the about this mac pop up. Then under Serial-ATA. This will give you the size.
You can also click on your drive in finder and choose Get Info. This will also let you see the size.
