How to organize photos in iPhoto after editing in Photoshop Elements?

Hello. This is my first post with this group. I have iPhoto set up to automatically go to Photoshop Elements (PE) for editing. That works just fine, but I have never learned an easy way to get edited images back into the original iPhoto folder (Event).
I've been flattening the layers in PE and saving as a JPEG or TIF to my desktop. Then I drag to iPhoto. I often make multiple versions of the same image and wish there was an easier way to get these versions into iPhoto, preferably into the same Event the original photo came from.
Is this possible? I also wish I didn't have to flatten because I want to be able to edit in layers again if necessary. I have about given up and have been storing non-flattened images elsewhere on the computer.
Thanks,
dgjtalkin

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

    You have two options:
    1. Set PSE as your external editor for iphoto and send the photos from iphoto. Save (not Save As) without changing the name or format and iPhoto will remember the original + the last edited version. (To get back to the original you will have to lose the edits, though.)
    2. Export the photos from iphoto, work on the copies, make all the changes you want to name and format and then reimport the edited versions to iphoto as new files. This lets you save as many different versions as you like.

  • Can I select multiple photos from iPhoto to edit in Photoshop Elements?

From iPhoto I am wanting to select all the photos from an event or album to edit in Photoshop Elements to avoid having to switch back and forth between the two. I have PSE set up as the external editor in iPhoto. When I have the photos selected in iPhoto and click the edit button, the most photos that will show in the PSE project bin is 4. I can go back to iPhoto and select more and they will be added to the existing photos in the project bin, but again I am trying to avoid having to go back and forth, and want to be able to edit one event/album in one sitting. I've tried highlighting each individual photo within an event, and also just the event, but still the max is 4 photos. It seems when I did this a couple months ago it worked fine, but since it is not doing it now I am questioning whether I imagined the whole thing! Is there a way to have more than 4 photos at a time? Thanks in advance for all help provided.

Hi, cyndy. Welcome to the discussions. No, 4 is the largest number you can send to PSE at one time. (This is an iphoto limitation, incidentally, not a PSE limitation.)

  • Can't save files back to iPhoto after editing in Photoshop Elements

    Hi
I am tring to edit pictures in Photoshop Elements 2.0. Here are the Steps i am doing
    1. Open iPhoto 6.0.4
    2. Go to the picture in the slideshow that i am trying to edit
    3. Double click the picture to open in an external editor (Photoshop Elements 2.0)
    4. Make my changes in PS
    5. Try to save file. Save as a JPG I am trying to replace the original file (it is in the modifiled folder)
    -- here is the problem
Can not replace the file--I get the message, "you do not have the right privileges."
So I check the permissions on the file. The original jpg file is a read only file, so I change it.
However I get the same error message.
I don't understand. Any help would be greatly appriceated. This is taking all the fun out of editing my images.
    Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. By your statement I take it you've setup PSE in iPhoto's preferences as the editor of choice when you double click on a thumbnail, right? That's how it should be.
iPhoto puts the edited version of the file in a separate folder titled Modified. So you don't want to try to force save to the same location as the original file. If you opened the file in PSE as you've stated (this indicated that you've set up iPhoto's preferences to use PSE when you double click on a thumbnail or photo) all you have to do is do a Save as long as the extension has not been changed to .psd. If PSE wants to use that extension then you need to either do a Save As to the desktop and import the new .psd file
    OR f
    1 - flatten the image
    2 - do a normal Save
3 - in the next window select jpg
    4 - hit Save
    5 - select Replace.
6 - select quality and the format options and hit the OK button.
If you look close you'll see that you're in the Modified folder of the Library and not the Originals folder.
Now if that's what you're doing and you still get the permissions thing, try the following: download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, substituting your account name for mine. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.

  • How to import photos from iPhoto Library to Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 Editor?

I can't use Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 Editor to edit photos from iPhoto Library. If I choose File, Open, and then select 'iPhoto Library', error message is "could not complete your request because of a program error."

You can't do it that way. Any attempt to poke around in the iphoto library from outside iphoto is very likely to damage the library and cause you to lose your photos, so PSE won't let you. You have two choices:
    1. Set PSE as your external editor, send the photos from iphoto, and save them without changing the name or format (you may need to adjust the editor prefs>Saving Files>On First Save to let you do this). Then iphoto will remember your original and the last edited version.
Be sure to choose this file in Applications>Adobe Photoshop Elements 10>Support files as your external editor, not the one at the top level of the PSE 10 folder in Applications:
    2. Export the photos from iphoto, use File>Open in the PSE editor to open the images and then save them with whatever changes to name or format you like, and reimport the saved images to iphoto as new files. This way you can save as many versions as you like.

  • How do i get photos from iphoto library over to photoshop elements for editing?

how do i get photos from iphoto library over to photoshop elements 10 for editing?
this is an iMac that I just got so its all new to me...
    thank you

If you set PSE as external editor, be sure you pick the right file, which is not by any means the logical choice. You want this one:
You can also export the photos from iphoto, edit them and save them under new names and reimport the edited photos as new files. This is more trouble, but lets you save as many different versions of your image as you like (iphoto only remembers the last edited version + original).

  • How do I save a photo exported from iPhoto and edited in Photoshop Elements 6 back to iPhoto?

My photos are downloaded to my iMac iPhoto 09.  I am able to export directly to Photoshop Elements '06 to edit but when I try to export the edited photo back to iPhoto it goes to Pictures, not to iPhoto where I want it to go.  Any suggestions?

Did you really export it or did you set PSE as your external editor? If you used file>export in iphoto, then you must import the edited photo back to iphoto as a new file.
To avoid that you can set PSE as your external editor in the iphoto preferences, and iphoto will remember your last saved edits + original, but you must not change the name or format of the image when saving. If you see the save as window it won't work. You may need to go to the PSE preferences>saving files and set On First Save to save over existing to avoid seeing the save as window. It will not work with raw files.

  • How do I upload pictures from iphone 5c and iPhoto for editing in photoshop elements 12 please?

I used to be able to edit all my iphoto pictures in PSE10. I  set the advanced section of preferences in iphoto to edit in PSE.  Since installing Photoshop Elements 12, I cannot get the transfer into PSE  of the photos (unedited and unreduced)  to work.
The general preferences only give a camera the options of connecting to iphoto, aperture, image capture, or, no application. Assuming my phone is a camera for editing purposes, I would like to give it the option of connecting to PSE 12.
Also, I would like to import my photos from the iphone 5C into PSE12 for editing. There is an import action in PSE12 which does not seem to work with the imac and iphone.
In addition, my email application is greyed out in the general preferences;  I use Microsoft Outlook for Mac.
How can I change the settings  in 'general' and 'advanced' preferences to work for me, Please?
    Thanks

  • Refreshing thumbnails/view in iphoto after editing in photoshop

I imported some images into iPhoto 08. The original images were then edited in Photoshop.
Problem: Once I open up iPhoto to look th eimages, they are not updated with the changes unless I go to full size mode. how do i update the views like it does automatically if edited in iPhoto itself.

    Ashwath:
Here's how you should use Photoshop to edit photos in iPhoto:
Editing photos in iPhoto with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements
1 - setup PS or PSE as theeditor of choice in iPhoto's General preferences.
2 - open the photo to be edited, perform the desired edits and use the Save menu option.
3 - if you get this window go ahead and save.
4 - if your edit is one that has PS/PSE changing the format to its own, psd, the you'll get this window.
5- choose the option you want and save as indicated in the screenshot.
These methods will let iPhoto know an edit has taken place and the thumbnail will be updated to reflect the edit.

  • I tried to copy 2,000  photos from iPhoto (v9.2) to Photoshop Elements 13 Organizer. It looked like they all copied, but then I got a crash report that the program had unexpectedly quit. I can't get back in to remove any photos. What do I do now?

I have repeatedly tried to re-open PE13 Organizer with no luck. The first time there was a message that the catalog was being organized and then it crashed. From that time on, I only get a crash message that it unexpectedly quit. How can I get the photos off the organizer so I can open it back up again? Thanks!

    zna22121,
Close computer down, and restart. If it does not work, it should, then re-install. But, do not attempt more than 200 at a time it just cannot handle it ?
    Good luck
Ps. I just dislike Organiser, (it is too slow, and disorganised) you can go from PE 13 Editor ( My wife tried it and went back to PE 6 ) and Process Multiple Files only 200 at a time. in Photoshop Elements, Organizer may handle it ?
We often do video production stills of 2,000 from PE 6 and we know it works ,when you use the images in Adobe CS5.5.2 Premiere Pro..for HD & Blue -ray transfers.. It is very easy ?

  • Using iPhoto but editing in Photoshop Elements 4.0

I am using iPhoto to organize my photos and PS4 to edit. Can someone please explain to me what happens to the original and new picture after I edit the picture in PE4. Also can someone explain the Adobe Bridge?

If there are Modified pics there will be a Modified folder. Where are you looking? Are you using v6 of iPhoto?
A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.

  • Faces lost after editing in Photoshop Elements 6

I just upgraded to iLife '09. I use iPhoto 8.1.2 to organize my photos and Photoshop Elements 6 to edit them externally. My problem: when I edit a photo that has Faces data in PE 6 and then view the (updated) photo in iPhoto, the face data is gone and I have to reassign it manually. I don't think this is how it's supposed to work, otherwise what's the point of using an external editor. I've rebuilt my iPhoto Library a couple time to no effect. Appreciate any help on this.

  • Using iPhoto and editing with Photoshop Elements 4

    Hello
I am new to Macs after many years using PC and I am struggling to set up my photo workflow. I shoot in RAW format and input into iPhoto from iPhoto I double click on the photo and which opens the RAW editor in Photoshop Elements. After making changes I open the file in Photoshop and then save as a TIFF.
My problem is I do not see the changed and saved file in iPhoto and if I double click on the photo again it opens back up in the RAW editor not as a TIFF.
Can any one point me in the right direction to solve this or is what I am trying to do not possible
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
What you're trying to do is not possible.
When you save as a TIFF you create a whole new file that needs to be imported into iPhoto anew. iPhoto will track an edit as long as you stay with the same file - so, edit your jpeg in PSE and use the 'Save' command and the change is reflected in iPhoto. However, you cannot Save RAW files, it's always a Save As... and so the resulting file has to be imported.

  • Organizer will not open after downloading Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premier Elements

I first downloaded Premier and Photoshop from Dell Digital Download with a new computer.  It appeared to be installed, and the opening screen appeared, but when I click on the Organizer side of either software, it will do nothing.  Doesn't open.  No error messages, it just doesn't open.  I contacted Dell and they reinstalled - which took numerous tries - and it still didn't open Organizer.  Then we contacted Adobe, who took over the computer after we downloaded it from Adobe instead. It still wouldn't open the Organizer side for them either.  They said to post the question, they don't know how to fix it!  Anyone?

    Hi,
I'm probably older than the tech guys combined age.
The welcome has often caused problems for many versions although not everyone suffers from it. The problem seems to be that a process gets stuck.
I usually recommend creating desktop shortcuts to each of the main programs. Most of the time I tend to start with the organizer and then I select an image and click on Editor button at the bottom of the organizer screen - that should load the image into the editor.
The editor can be found here.
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 12\PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe"
If you want to get back to the welcome screen, load the organizer, go to the Help menu and select Welcome screen. Then click on the gear wheel (top right) and you can change the settings.
One little tip if you are new to PSE 12, in the organizer go to the Edit menu and select Preferences -> Media-Analysis. Turn off all the options. The other thing to do is to go to the Help menu and select Updates. You should be on version 12.1.

  • When I take a photo and try to edit in Photoshop Elements 11 from Lightroom 4, it brings me to PSE 11 and opens the photo in there, but doesn't allow me to do anything - no layers, masks...anything.

I work on a PC - Windows Vista, and currently use Lightroom 4. When I try to choose the 'edit in' option and go to PSE11, it will go there and open the file, but it won't let me do anything with it.  All the buttons/masks...etc are faded out and when I scroll over them a circle with a line through it comes up. Is there any way to fix this so that when I edit-in from Lightroom to PSE11 that I can actually use it? And if not, how should I save my files then so I can re-open them in PSE11? Would they need to be JPEGs, or something else? I shoot in RAW.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hillsitter,
I use a Windows PC and PSE Version 8.
However, I set up the link to PSE by going to Edit > Preferences and
clicking on the External Editing Tab.
I then clicked on the 'Choose' box and browsed to > Program Files > Adobe >
Photoshop Elements 8.0 and I then clicked on the Elements Organiser 8.0.exe
file to create the Link to the Elements Organiser. I could have linked to
    the PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe file.
I know this will be somewhat different on a Mac but the principle should be
the same i.e. link directly to the .exe file.
    I hope this helps.
