How to output a 16:9 movie to a DVCAM deck without letter boxing it

I need to take a 16:9 movie, convert it to DV codec so I can then export it to a DSR25 DVCAM deck. How do I squeeze the 16:9 footage onto the 4:3 DVCAM format, so when I play the footage from deck out of the deck it will be unsqueezed by the 16:9 monitor and play back normally?
I can't seem to find the setting or filter to tell FCP to export a squeezed version.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

I've never heard of a pro deck having a consumer dvd-style setting that automatically corrects for anamorphic footage. That would be a monitor setting if you ask me.
I'm a little confused by the question however, are you working with hd source material? Any 16:9 SD should be anamorphic anyway so the only thing necessary would be to play out to your deck as is.
What is the source footage? and the sequence setting?

I bought a HD movie that but it is very buggie on my computer. I want to change the movie to SD so it is not as buggie. How can change the movie I bought to SD without buying it again.

Do you mean you need to make a 4:3 from your 16:9 high definition footage ?
Or are you making 16:9 standard definition?
Is your output to the web, DVD or what?

  • How do I play all my Movies from the iTunes'  Library?

How do I play all the Movies from within my LIBRARY without having to click PLAY everytime on each individual movie? All my movies in the Library have the check marks on them already.
When I play my "Music" LIBRARY, as soon as a song is over the next one starts up. Fine. Great! But, the same is not happening from within my "Movies" LIBRARY.
This play-all-Movies type of action works fine from within each of my playlists. Once selected a movie to play from any playlist, other movies will keep on playing, one after another, until told to stop. But, I also would like to play all movies from my library.
It would seem redundant to copy my entire library into a single playlist just to have this function available. Besides, every time I would add a new movie to the library, I would also have to remember to add it to said playlist.
Could anyone, please, tell me if it is possible to play all movies from within the LIBRARY? (iTunes v.8.01).

Thanks for your prompt reply, Meg. I've applied exactly your "smart playlist" directions (always wondered what that "smart playlist" was for while it worked wonders! Great going.

  • How do I edit a .mov file in iMovie '09 without losing quality?

    Hi!
Can anyone tell me how to edit .mov files in iMovie '09 without losing quality?
I have perfectly fine looking screen capture video from iShowU. It's 1024x768, 30 fps, Animation compression codec. It's a .mov file that looks great played in the QuickTime player. I can't even tell it's a movie -- it just looks like the screen I captured.
Now, I bring it into iMovie '09, trim the ends, and Export to QuickTime using no compression and the same fps and size. The output quality is noticeably lower than the input quality, which makes no sense to me because I'm telling the export not to compress (and my Preferences are set to "Import HD video as Full-Original Size".
I just want to trim the ends off a video -- maybe combine a couple files -- but without wrecking the quality of the originals. That really doesn't sound like it should be all that hard, but so far, it's been impossible.
    Any pointers are greatly appreciated!!

I've found the answer. On the File/Import/Movies... dialog, uncheck "Optimize Video" even if you have "Full - Original Size" selected. You don't want any optimizations done, even at original size. Then make sure you are exporting at precisely the same size as the original file, which means that under the Export to Quicktime/Options/Video Size dialog you do NOT want to check "Preserve aspect ratio using:" Just use "Custom" size and set your size to exactly what "Get Info" tells you when you view the file in the Finder.
Make sure that Video/Settings is set to Compression Type: None, and that you have the Frame Rate exactly what your original was.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • How do I create a streaming movie in QT Pro??

I have a Darwin streaming server and I'm trying to figure out how to stream movies on it.
I've got QT Pro and I understand that I need to use this, somehow, to encode videos correctly for streaming.
    How do I do this?
Do I need a ".sdp" file, and if so, how do I get one?
Darwin Streaming Server appears to require one as a playlist option, 'mount-point'.

When you encode your files you must make sure that they are hinted. Here are some general directions for creating sutable media. This is taken from a ducument that I am writing for a university at the current time so the applicable copyrights apply.
There are many codecs which can be wrapped in a Quicktime Move but only several codecs which can be wrapped in a Quicktime Movie, can be streamed. Several of the compatible streaming codecs include MP4, H.264, AAC and Sorenson. Additionally the Quicktime files MUST be hinted. The easiest way to create compatible files is with either Quicktime Pro or with iMovie. Neither of which are free. Free tools exist but they are very difficult to use. One way to create a compatible file is the following. Please note that the following directions will cause you to create a standards compliant file. In Quicktime Pro choosing export and in iMovie by choosing Quicktime Advanced export. Choose Movie to MPEG4. Click Options. File format should be MP4. Change the video format to H.264 and set the data rate to 1000 kbs. You can use any value that you wish but 1000 kbs looks very nice also note that this file probably will not be playable for anyone outside of the LAN unless they have an extremely fast internet connection. Your total kbs of both the video and audio must be less than that of the end users internet connection. For example for anyone unfortunate enough to still be on 56k would need the file to be under 56 kbs, 44 kbs would be a good bitrate to use for them. You can use any image size that you choose but note that the movie will usually look better at a smaller size. You can leave the frame rate at 30 but if you do not have any fast action sequences you can easily reduce it to 15 without much loss. Click Video options. If you don't mind spending more time encoding the file then change the encoding mode to Best quality but if you don't have the time to spend encoding then choose Faster encode. Change video to Audio and make sure that the audio format is AAC. You can reduce the data rate if you wish but if you have any music then it will sound terrible if you reduce the quality much below 128 kbs. If you only have someone speaking in the video you will most likely want to change the movie down to one channel (mono). You can also change the output sample rate but 44.1 kHz works well. You can also increase the encoding quality if you want better sound. Change audio to streaming. Make sure that the box is checked for enable streaming (if that is not enabled then no matter how you encode your file it will NOT work on the streaming server). Also make sure that you click the chick for optimize for server. Click OK and save. Some time later your movie will be encoded. To link to the file first place the file on the streaming server. After it is there play the file using Quicktime. The formula for the address to open it is rtsp://servername/path-to-file/filename.mp4 (or rtsp://servername/path-to-file/filename.mov). If that works without a problem in Quicktime Pro click save. Choose the option to save a reference file and press save. Place the reference file on the web server and link to that reference file just like you would any other file. (If you used iMovie there is a free tool made by apple for mac os x to create hinted files. The tool can be found here: http://developer.apple.com/quicktime/quicktimeintro/tools/index.html .)

  • How do I combine several short movies into one large project?

You’ll often find a longer project much easier to work with if you work on it in shorter pieces. Doing this can minimize system lugging and maximize program responsiveness as well as reduce the likelihood that you’ll run into problems when you try to output your finished movie.
Once each segment is finished and output, open a new project and combine the segments into a final mix.
In order to do with this minimal loss of quality and maximum performance, you’ll want to output each segment in its ideal video format – a format that the program is designed to work with natively and won’t have to re-render. Instructions for outputting each of these ideal video formats are found below.
The ideal source video format for a standard definition video project is the DV-AVI, although DV-MOVs will also work.
The ideal source video format for a high definition video project is either the 1920x1080 HDV MPEG or the 1920x1080 MTS AVCHD file.
    For standard video
If you’d like to export your video project – or even a portion of your project – so that you can import it into a standard definition Premiere Elements video project on a Windows computer, use Publish & Share/Computer/AVI with the DV preset option.  The file you output will have an .avi suffix
The Macintosh equivalent to the DV-AVI file is the DV-MOV. To output a DV-MOV file from your project, use Publish & Share/Computer/MOV with the DV preset.  The file you output will have a .mov suffix.
    For high-definition video
If you’d like to export your video project – or a portion of your project – from an HDV (tape-based high-definition) project for use in another HDV project, use Publish & Share/Computer/MPEG with the MPEG2 1920x1080i 30 preset (or 1920x1080i 25 for PAL).
If you’re working on an Full AVCHD project, output your video by clicking Publish & Share/Computer/AVCHD and using the M2T 1920x1080i preset (with the appropriate frame rate). For more information on outputting AVCHD video.
Both forms of high-definition video will output with the .m2t suffix.

The best way is to use an audio editor.  A popular one that is free, and has both Windows and Mac versions, is Audacity.
If you want to try to do it with iTunes, you will need to burn the tracks to a CD, and then rip back from the CD using the "join tracks" option.  However, this method will not give you any control over the transitions.

Both the AVI and the MOV file extensions refer to the file container and not the compressed data the file contains. Both are generic file containers in that each may contain any valid combination of audio and/or video data that is compatible with the codec component configuration of the system on which the file was created. On the other hand, whether a file is playback compatible, conversion compatible, and/or edit compatible depends on the data actually contained in the file container. So, you are basically dealing with two separate issues here—the container and what is inside it.
Basically, if you want to make your files ediit compatible with iMovie, you must change your file container to one that is acceptable to iMovie and convert the data to edit compatible audio and/or video compression formats as may be necessary. The best approach is to determine what codecs were actually used to create the original AVI files and add them to your system if possible. In most cases a codec package like Perian can be added to your system's codec component configuration to may the AVI file playable. Once they are playable, in the QT 7 app then they can be chnged or converted to file types and compression formats that can be edited in iMovie. (While Perian handles most codecs commonly used to create AVI files, it does not handle all possibilities and, while the Perian codec package still works under cureent Mac OS versions, its development group has decided to drop further development/support of the package.)
Background: AVI is a file container originally developed by Microsoft back in 1992 but for which official support was discontinued about 11 years. Despite its limitations, Windows users still tend to use this file based on its open source ease of use and generic nature, thus, making its use so popular that most users are unwilling to switch to more modern but less generic file types. Since some AVI legacy compression formats have never been transcoded for the Mac or use beyond OS 9 or OS X PPC platforms, it is often important to know what specific compression formats are contained in the AVI file to know which codecs to add to your system and which not to add in order to avoid possible codec conflicts.
You can use many different converters to convert AVI files to iMovie edit compatible files. Most third-party apps contain their own buit-in codecs which do not relay on the Mac codec component configuration. Free ones, like HandBrake, usually have limited conversion capabilities while those that have more varied outputs are usually commercial in nature and will cost you additional cash. QT 7 Pro or the free MPEG Streamclip app allow you to access you own system's component configuration and use any available codec component like DV, AIC, MPEG-4, H.264, Photo JPEG, etc.—all of which are iMovie compatible for editing purposes—but only after making the AVI file QT 7 player compatible.
In order to determine what compression formats wewre used in your AVI files you can
    1) Try checking the Finder "Info" window,
    2) Use the "Inspector", "Media Info", or "Properties" window of any player app that will open the file, or
    3) Use a general media utility app like "MediaInfo" to read the file characteristics.

I check OMJR/OMJ3, but zwa1 or wa01 output type doesn'et setup in it. OMJR setup the printer item as 6 for movement type . only OMJ4 setup wa01 and zwa1 output type . NACE could see the output type configure, but I don't know if user A set user group in profile for ND9. it should trigger out zwa1 output , why wa01 output will also trigger out ,
How IM trigger the output type ? In mn23, the two output type both setup for printer item 6.

Really? I need to check that out!
You should certainly be able to add content by reference to itunes from such a disk (even before the update) - so long as itunes knows the location of the file (set Preferences not to copy to local library when adding the media) it will stream it to AppleTV if the disk is available.
I hope you're right, but I'd be surprised if current Extremes can be upgarded to provide a full Home Sharing service - marvellous if they can but I'd be surprised as i've long said we need an Apple media server either based on TC or AE to do this kind of thing.

You don't use Airplay.  You set up Home Sharing on both and under the Computers section of AppleTV you'll then find it under Movies (or Rentals if rented), assuming it's in a compatible format.

I just noticed that some of the movies I had in iTunes did not get transferred to the iPhone 5. The missing movies are shown as generic movie icons in the iTunes panel and are checked to select them. But they do not show up in iPhone Videos. How do I get the original movies to show up again and transfer to the iPhone? I recently upgraded Mac OS to 10.6.8

    1. iTunes won't offer cloud downloads for songs that it "thinks" are in your library, even if it "knows" the files are missing. If you've exhaustively searched for the missing files and there is no prospect of repair by restoring to them to their original locations, or connecting to new ones, then delete that tracks that display both the missing exclamation mark and are of media kind Purchased/Protected AAC audio file. Don't hide from iTunes in the cloud when asked, close iTunes, then reopen. You can download from the cloud links or iTunes Store > Quicklinks > Purchased > Music > Not on this computer > All songs > Download all.
    2. Why? Not sure, perhaps 3rd party tools or accidental key presses combined with previously hidden warning messages when trying to organize the library. There is a hint that using the feature to downsample media as it is synced to a device may also be involved, though I've not replicated it. Whatever the reason a backup would protect your media.

There are more attractive versions of this type of adapter. Radio Shack shows at least a dozen from different companies.
