How to overcome Flash sniffers on old sites? (FWA)

Hi folks,
It's Rob Ford here from FWA (http://www.thefwa.com)
I am currently researching and writing an epic article called The History of Flash Websites, which highlights those pioneering sites in the last 15 or so years.
An issue I am coming up against is old Flash sniffers on splash pages, saying I don't have the relevant Flash player installed, i.e. FP3, FP4, FP5, FP6 etc. This is stopping me be able to get to the actual website of some sites.
Here's an example of a FP6 sniffer gone bad:
http://web.archive.org/web/20030719211508id_/http://www.playmore.com/
Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this!

I don't think there is an easy way to overcome this.
One way I could think of is using a virtual machine, where you could install older Flash Player versions, and access these sites from there.  You can download archived Flash Players from http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html
But I am not sure if you can actually install and run very old versions on a modern OS, even in compatibility mode.

YOu need to be clear about the products you are using, so we can help you. In particular there is no trial of Adobe Reader, it is free and keeps running. Sounds like you are using some versions of Acrobat - which?
YOu must properly uninstall the trial, don't just delete files or you may get a mess impossible to recover.

  • How can I add a library of flash movies to my site?

I posted this same question on the Dreamweaver forum and a suggestion was made that I try over here for help, so please excuse the duplicate question.
How can I add a library of flash movies to my site?
Hey there everyone and thanks for reading my question.
I have a library of flash movies (specifically a library of maps) and when the map movies are run in Flash they call each other just fine (i.e. the USA map will load the Georgia map when Georgia is clicked on the USA map, etc etc etc for each state).
HOWEVER, when I insert the USA map in one of my site pages (I'm working on the site using Dreamweaver CS4) the USA map page will load, but when a state is clicked the area on the page for the map goes blank and the state map does not load.
Short of coding a specific path in each of my state maps (in the Flash editor) is there a way to tell Dreamweaver there is a library of maps, look there for the sub-map?
and if I do have to code the path to the map, can I code a relative path rather than a specific URL address for the maps?
I know this is probably one of those simple things, but I'm not seeing it (can you tell I'm new at this??)
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Frances

    Hey again,
Thanks for the helpful suggestions. Everyone's comments got me to thinking about what the path was in the calls from the maps.
    here is what finally worked:
    on (release)
    loadMovie("../FlashIMapDownloads/georgia.swf", 0);
this script code is in the action script for the "georgia" button of my main map - a US Map. (I hope I'm describing all this correctly).
I'll post this same info in the Dreamweaver forum too.
    Thanks again!

You de-activate the software on the first machine. Then use the Installer DVD or downloaded installer file that you have archived for safe keeping on the second computer.

  • How do I republishing an old site, from an older version of iWeb?

Ok. I had an Old site that I want to continue. I created it on an older version of iWeb. Is there anyway to salvage that site or do I just have to do it over?

As often discussed in this forum, you'll need the domain.sites2 file iWeb uses to store its assets.
If that file is missing, or not available from a backup, you'll have to start from scratch, meaning : Copy/Paste text and images (you can drag them) from the published pages.
Small consolation, if you carefully copy text from the webpage in the browser window, iWeb will retain the formatting when you do Command-V (= paste). The textbox is automagically created.
And no, iWeb cannot import or open HTML files.

  • How to get flash template name from a site.

Hello, I recently discovered a site and loved the gallery image used on the home page. I tried to find the name of the flash template used in the image gallery but couldn't find any way on the site. Could you kindly tell if there is any way to find the name of flash template from a site where it is used. The site link is dsm.com/corporate/home.html.
If you have any idea about the flash template used in this site, please inform me. I want to integrate on my site. Thanks for your effort.

you'd have to download and decompile the swf.  and that will only help if the template author left comments indicating the template's origin and the user did not remove those comments.

  • Putting Flash Intros on my site?

    >>The splash screen becomes the index
    Yup!
And just for the record, when a prospective client demands a
    splash page or
autoplay music I refuse to build the site. Not saying you or
    anyone else
    should do that.
There's an old joke about a man asking a woman if she would
    sleep with him
for $1M. She says, "Absolutely; Yes!" He then asks, "Will you
    sleep with me
for $10?". She replies vehemently, "Hell No! What do you
    think I am?" To
which he replies, "We have already established that. Now we
    are merely
    negotiating the price."
To me, if I tell a client or prospect that auto play music or
    a splash page
will be significantly counterproductive and they should not
    even consider
either and then I go ahead and add either to the site, I'm
    nothing more than
    what that woman was.
    You see I don't think my primary goal is to please my client;
    that's my
secondary goal. My primary goal is to please my client's
    prospective
clients/customers. Not surprisingly, when I am unencumbered
    in pursuing my
primary goal I routinely accomplish that secondary goal.
That's just me. Not saying you should take that rigid
    position, but you
might want to at least think about it. ;-)

can any one tell me how to install flash player on powerbookg4.i actully uninstall it to upgrade it but now i can not install new one.it always says get flash player for powerpc when i try to install it after downloading.it is 10.5.8 version

Flash Player version 10.1.102.64 is the last version available to PPC Mac users. However, this Flash version won't work for many videos on Facebook, YouTube and other sites. Adobe's latest version, 10.2.x or later, is only for Intel Macs. Adobe will not provide a newer Flash version for PPC Macs.
The message requesting that you download Adobe Flash Player takes you to Flash Player requiring an Intel processor. Doesn't work on a PowerPC processor. I found a hack, installed it & it works with Firefox, TenFourFox & Safari.
Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.

  • How to put flash as a table or cell background or put HTML elements on top of flash file?

    Hi Guys,
Could anyone please suggest me that how to put flash file as a table or cell background. I want to design a website and want to put HTML elements like table, images, text on top of flash file. so its look like animation in background. please visit following websites for an example: http://www.gagudju-dreaming.com/ and http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/
Please guide me ASAP, thanks a lot in advance.
    Nitz.

    Hi Nitz
The first thing you must do is convert your layout from table based to css based, (tables are o/k for tabular data, but not layout) but if you have never used css for layout it may be a steep learning curve.
My recommendation is to start with the following tutorial on converting a table based comp to a css layout -
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/dw_fw_css_pt1.html
More info on using css is available here - http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/css.html.
Once you have converted your site the 'procedure' for using swf's as a background, (does not work well with flv's, but can be done using html5 video without a skin, to a limited extent) is the same as having a background-image resize automatically to the full browser view-port. The best way to learn how to do this is to view the code on a page using the background-image technique, view the code on this page - http://www.pziecina.com/indexold.php.
However, instead of having a fluid layout I would recommend using a fixed layout size to start with, as this overcomes many problems. I have uploaded a basic test page to illustrate the idea to - http://www.pziecina.com/test_ideas/swfbg_test.html. As I said the page must be resized in this example in order to see the effect, (so do not forget to resize the browser, even if it is only by 1px), but if you use a fixed size layout and your swf's size fits the desired area correctly the resize should not be required.
