How to override external mic

Hello I know this is probably a very simple thing to do but I have looked everywhere and cant find anything on it. I am currently on OS X Version 10.9.4 with a mac book pro early 2011. I am trying to use my internal microphone because it is a better microphone then the one on my apple ear buds. I just cant find a way to override it to allow me to use the internal one. Every time i plug it in it switches to the external and I either cant use the microphone or have to unplug the earbuds. Anything helps and is highly appreciate.

Hey androo907,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you would like to use your Apple headphones as the output device on your MacBook Pro, but would like to continue to use the internal microphone of the computer as the input device. You can achieve this by simply adjusting the sound settings in System Preferences:
OS X Mavericks: Adjust your computer’s sound input

  • How to connect extern mic in to input

How to conect extern mic (Shure sm58)and use it with prologic ?

You could use a small mixer with appropriate cabling, or an actual Audio Interface that's designed for what you want to do. The SM58 is a low impedance Mic and needs a mixer or audio interface.

  • How to add external mic in sound?

I'm trying to audio record with external mic through USB. Built in mic won't turn off. How do I add the external mic and select it in system preferences?

Try looking for an input selection option in the preferences of the particular app you are using. Make sure your optional mic is plugged in first.

  • External mic for out-door shooting

When I'm shooting video out of doors, the mic picks up wind noise. How about an external mic?

The only thing I can think of for you to experiment with would be a PC mic, you know those wand looking ones meant for VOIP meetings or calls. (Pre headset mics)
Theoretically you can get 1/8th inch plugs for commercial microphones, but I doubt the iPad has the drivers and such to handle them. It should handle headsets however and maybe either a PC mic or a discreet headset (they have ones that fit behind the ears with the mic boom coming down by your cheek) would work.

  • How to record with en external mic instead of built-in in iSight

    Hi,
I just want to record simple videos with the webb cam iSight. I want the audio to sound better and use an external mic during the recording.
After testing I see that iMove uses only the built-in mic, there is no difference if I connect the external mic to the computer with USB or 3,5mm blug mic.
How can change that iMovie would use the external mic instead of built-in?
The audio sounds really bad I want to sound better with the mic. For sure now in iMovie 11 there's an equalizer which makes a difference but I still can't make the sound more "close", it sounds more like eco.
    Any audio tips?

Your built-in iSight is only a camera. It has no mic of its own, so you started with your Mac's built-in mic.
iMovie lets you select among connected mics in the "Voiceover" pane as shown here:
When you click on the "Voiceover" choices bar, you will be able to select among all mics available to your system. (The only reason that this picture shows "iSight" as the "Record from:" mic is that I captured the image while using an external iSight, which does have its own built-in mic.)

    (1) Like you, I use the Logitech USB Desktop mic for my voiceovers. It offers sound good enough for me at a price I can afford.
    (2) Note that other apps that allow you to select various audio sources each have their own way of doing so. For instance, FaceTime changes mics with a FaceTime > Video menu command as shown here:
You can also record A/V in Snow Leopard's QuickTime Player, which lets you select mics in its "Preferences..." as shown here:
    (3) The Help menu of any Mac app that lets you select among various sources may give info on how that particular app lets you select which microphone you use.

  • How can I use an external mic to record meeting audio with quicktime player

I'm trying to use a SoundTech CM-1000 conference mic to record meetings at a conference I am running.
I'm using Quicktime for the recordings.
The SoundTech CM-1000 conference mic does not transmit any sound when connected to the Audio-in plug on my MacBook Pro.
Does my MacBook Pro require external mics that are also powered - connected via a usb port rather than, or at least in addition to, the audio-in plug, for instance?
    What's happening here?
    Steve

Macbook Pro does not have a microphone input
    You have two options:
1 buy a USB mic and connect to a USB port
2 buy a small very cheap sound mixer that has 3.5 mic level input and a line level out put
    something like this:
    DAP Audio

  • I want to use an external mic, on my DV6. But the on-board mic remains on. How can I switch it off?

On every other piece of kit I've ever used, plugging in an external mic (or headphones for that matter) automatically disables the on-board microphone (either side of the webcam on this notebook).  I have managed to turn off the on-board mic but doing so disables the external mic input too. I'm running Windows 7.
Please help - it's driving me nuts!

  • External mic not detected? (R705)

Hi all, I recently got an R705 but am having an issue with the mics. Somehow the computer can't detect any external mics that I have plugged in too the mic jack, and in turn doesn't disable the internal one. Whatever I try to record just gets picked up by the internal mic, nothing else.
I've gone through the Realtek settings to no avail, and can't find the usual windows volume control. (I assume the Realtek settings replaced them?) The microphone properties menu yielded no results either, none of the settings I tried allowed the external mic to work.
Any ideas? I hope it's just a software issue...
    Thanks!

Interesting...I'm having the exact opposite problem w/my Satellite L455-S5975 laptop.
My computer can't detect the internal mic, but will detect the external mic when I plug something into the jack. The internal mic won't  record anything. I'm trying to use it for Skype conferences.
I've also gone through the Realtek settings to no avail. When I trouble shoot I get the below screen. Problem is, I can't click the option to set is back as my default.
Any ideas on how to solve.
    Thanks!

  • Need help recording with an external mic on garageband!!!

I'm a singer and i'm trying to figure out how to record vocals on garageband with an external mic that can plug into the powerbook. However, when i record it uses the internal mic instead I have no clue how to change it so it will use the external mic. Please help!!!
    Thanks,
    Stef=)

You HAVE to use a Mic that is powered! Just plugging a Mic into the Powerbook and switching the input to Line-in doesn't cause it to work.
I believe Griffin Techologies makes an adapter that will work and there are some other one out there. Google powered mics and see what comes up.
