How to Overwrite Keywords

I just imported my library of photos into Lightroom and now I'm on a mission to correct the sins of the past. One of those sins is that the keywords embedded into the photos themselves are in some cases Helter Skelter. In other words, I'm not completely sure how they ended up with the keywords they did. I now have the correct set of keywords and their hierarchy defined in Lightroom but when I Save Metadata Lightroom doesn't overwrite the complete set of keywords already in the files. I end up with some of the trash from yesteryear. What I'd like to make happen is completely overwrite the photo keywords with what I've defined in Lightroom but I've yet to figure out how to make that happen. So, I hope some of you brainiacs can help me.

Thanks John. One of the things I want to make sure is explain well is that the keywords, as displayed, in Lightroom are purrrrfect. Unfortunately the same can't be said when I view the keywords in Windows Explorer. In other words, even after I Save Metadata the "miscreant" keywords remain with the files. So, at that point Lightroom and Windows Explorer are displaying different sets of keywords for the same photos.

Make sure you are in Grid View, primary monitor (if you have two), select 10 pictures and type (or delete) the keywords in the Keywording panel in the left upper corner.
Make sure the Metadata->Show Metadata for Target Photo Only is unchecked in the menus. Otherwise your edits will only apply to the primary selected (most selected) image.

RE: How to export keywords tied to images

Can someone give me a step by step as to how to export keywords from one computer so that they will be linked to images in an identical folder in another computer? Haven't been able to find a clear answer in this forum.

I figured out that a change has to be done to load in the configuration, specifically in the Prepare View Stream component.

Could someone explain to me how categories and keywords work?

I have some questions with regard to iTunes U categories and keywords and would be grateful for any advice.
1. Is our RSS code (below)correct?
2. Does the category and sub category of each feed item have to match the category stated at channel level? This is quite important since we have items with different categories and sub categories within a single collection.
3. Is it compulsory to state a category at channel level and item level?
4. Is it worth adding a keywords element for each item and if so how do the keywords improve discoverability in iTunes U?

In the channel element of our RSS feeds (collections) we’re stating the iTunes U category element like this (we can add a subcategory if required) –

Within the item element we’re stating the category and sub category for each item, as per the example here - http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/specs.html#category but with the addition of the itunesu code attribute - like this -

How to edit keywords?

My question is: how to consolidate keywords, which by mistake differ by capital (small) letter. For example I have photos with keyword "flowers" and photos with keyword "Flowers". I would like to have all of them with one keyword "flowers".
Unfortunately I cannot change the name in keyword HUD getting message that the keyword already exists. So, what is the simplest and fastest way to make the consolidation?

You can merge identical keywords, but for some reason beyond my grasp they made keywords case sensitive so it won't fix your problem.
The only solution I can think of is inelegant to say the least: Make a smart Album that gathers all the images with the keyword "Flowers" then drag the keyword "flowers" onto all the images in that album. Finally, delete the keyword "Flowers" from your keyword HUD.
You need to make this Smart Album on the library level so you're sure to capture ALL the images with that keyword.
I really hope that someone has a better suggestion.

How to overwrite ratings and keywords when moving files?

I have just edited a number of photos on my computer by adding ratings and keywords. I tried to export them to an external hard drive, so I could free up space on my computer, but I discovered that copies of those photos already existed on the external HD. I selected the "overwrite" option, but the ratings and keywords didn't copy over from the computer versions to the hard drive versions. Is there a way of doing that?

I detect a lot of confusion here.
Originally, you want to move a photo to your external HD to free up space on your computer's internal HD. That's what you said.
Then later, you said that your backups are on your external HD.
So, if you are successful at moving photos from your internal HD to your external HD (however you do it), then you no longer have backups of those photos. This is not a good thing. Now, you have only ONE copy of these moved photos (you used to have two). Furthermore, when your external HD fails (and it will), now you have ZERO copies of these photos. ZERO copies is not good. ZERO copies is bad. You are living dangerously.
You need to address this issue, most likely by purchasing more disk space, and then beginning regular, automatic backups so that you always have two copies of each photo, one copy on each of two physically distinct drives.
Next source of confusion ... you seem to be implying that copies of photos on both hard drives are cataloged in Lightroom. This seems unnecessary and a way to cause confusion. I wouldn't do things this way.

How to Overwrite Document Properties (Title, Author) for Indexing Purposes

SES Experts...
Our client is running SES 1.1.1.2.0.0 and using a Database Data Source to index various documents (PDFs, DOC, XLS, PPT, etc.). The document metadata is taken from column data (TITLE, AUTHORS, KEYWORDS, etc.) rather than the properties of the document.
The client does not want SES to index the properties of the document (Author, Title, Subject, Keywords, etc.).
Is there a way to accomplish this? I believe the Document Service API could accomplish this but it's not clear to me how exactly we would do this.
Any help/pseudo code would be appreciated.

You have to implement a document service and place it in the pipeline after the default summarizer.
You could also try to remove the default summarizer from your pipeline. Try it out before wasting time on a document service implementation. Depends on the way you retrieve your column data.
If however you really need to develop your own DS simply overwrite the title attribute with the value from the column data you mentioned or delete unwanted entries.

How to copy keywords from one image to many in Bridge CS6 (workaround)

I see a few questions about how to do this, but I didn't see this workaround (maybe it's even the workflow Adobe had in mind). Hope it helps others searching for this.
To copy keywords from one photo, and then apply the same keywords to many, in Bridge CS6:
Select one image that has the keywords you want to copy.
Right-click and choose File Info...
On the IPTC tab, scroll down to find the Keywords field. Select and copy the keywords you want (probably all).
Click Cancel to exit without making accidental changes.
Select the files you want to add the keywords to.
Right-click and choose File Info...
On the IPTC tab, scroll down to find the Keywords field.
Click in it and paste your copied keywords.
Click OK. Keywords are applied to all files. (NOTE: I think this replaces keywords, rather than adding to them).
I'm using CS6 on OS X 10.6.8.

Why wouldn't you just use a Windows .bat file with xcopy statements? You could even schedule it to run with the Windows task scheduler.

How to use keywords in a correct way for Acrobat Pro AND Spotlight

When I enter keywords in a PDF using CMD-D in Acrobat Professional I also want to find those keywords via OS X Spotlight. At the same time I to be able to use keywords when I enter keywords in PDFs using Preview.app.
What's the path to do this, and how do these three applications work together to provide a consistent search. I also need to know the details like do I enter keywords in Acrobat with komma or without, with a space before the komma or not etc.
The goal is to be able to have a constistant, compatible workflow for keywords/tags in PDFs using Acrobat, prevoew.app, and other applications; in order to manage large amounts of PDF files.

Thank you for your answers. I hope I can ask some more of your time because it is not totally clear yet.
I tried your suggestion to change the stroke width. This has no effect, other than the stroke width, the curves stay filled. It would be nice to show this in a picture... And I just noticed that I had the arguments wrong in my example (been playing around with it too much), the null and green should be the other way round. But also this did not make any difference. Specifying the fill color with the same color as the background color of the map is a workaround though.
Adding the theme_name to the feature attributes is an option, but would that be possible with predefined themes? At the moment we have all the theme definitions in the database.
The most important question however is how do I draw a single feature, based on some condition. The only method I can find in the MapViewer api is drawLiveFeatures with no feature args which "Draws all the live features that are returned to this client from MapViewer". I must be overlooking something.
