How to pad OST file to prevent fragmentation

Does anyone have any clever tricks on how to quickly fill then empty an OST file, so you can get it to what your maximum mailbox size in, then clear out the padded space so it has a ton of free space in it, and the file will no longer become fragmented then.
We have performance issues once large OSTs get heavily fragmented due to them constantly expanding as more and more email builds up, so was wondering if there was a way to grow it or pad it to make it the max their actual mailbox could get, then free the
space from the garbage files.

Hi RJ022,
Yes, I agree with Daine that compacting a file just help to reduce only approx 20% of white spaces in the data file. But, if you really want to solve this large OST data issue, then you should prefer archiving
instead of this one. It will help you to make an archive of Outlook data file and reduce the risk of damaged data and slow Outlook interface.

  • How to open OST files?

Hi, my Exchange Server not work. I need to open my ost file. Is it possible to do this using the Outlook? Files are larger than, which stores a lot of information.

    JonhLokson: You
can easily open OST file. Get OST file to PST converter application it helps you to convert all OST contacts, calendars and tasks etc in PST file format. You can then easy to import into Outlook. You can do this with the help of OST Open File
    Tool: http://www.ost.openfiletool.com
More detailed information you can read in this thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/461c2a94-4cb1-439b-940c-3ef9fe601651/couldnt-open-the-ost?forum=w7itproappcompat
You can also perform the conversion by export the contents of the OST file to a PST file by following the
    instructions at: http://www.filerepairforum.com/showthread.php?29-How-To-Convert-OST-To-PST-in-Outlook-2007

  • How to open .ost file in unconfigured 2007 Outlook

On this computer, no need to connect to an active email account with Outlook 2007, simply want to open old archive of previous email (.ost file) for reference.  I've copied the .ost file to the desktop
but cannot open it based on previous instructions: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/officesetupdeploylegacy/thread/af6f7941-b6c7-4fa9-a8b3-a5b88caa8ff2
Is there a way to do this without an email account set up in outlook?  (If "add new email account"...manually configure...next..."microsoft exchange" radio button...next...random letters
in server and user name fields will ungrey "more settings..." button...advanced tab..."offline folder file settings..." button...can browse to .ost file)  Doing this procedure requires a valid exchange server to connect to, but I don't
want to do that, just view the .ost file.

When domain controller is lost after that you want to retrieve entire emails with attachments, contacts, tasks, notes and calendar same as previous. In such condition, OST Recovery
tool is well suited to recover emails from OST file with all email properties.

  • How can I transfer files from my computer to my I pad ?

How can I transfer files from my computer to my I Pad?

Try a conduit such as Dropbox.
Goodreader or Documents to Go also have helper apps that allow transfers.
Goodreader is particularly good in that it has a integal file tree and you can mount your computers harddrive and navigate directly on your ipad.
Use the open with to view/move files into other apps.

  • How can I download files from my PC to my new I-Pad? Mainly PDF files. The manual doesn't make sense to me...

I have read the manual on how to transfer a file from a computer to my I-Pad. It says in I-Tunes, go to devices Apps pane...
I open the I-Tunes App and can not find anything referencing an Apps pane.
    What am I missing?

You connect your device to your comptuer and open iTunes. Once it 'sees' the ipad, you can click on the name of your device and then you should see the tabs. In the Apps tab is your interface to remove apps, also to use the file transfer protocol - if your app supports that - to move files from your computer to your iPad. You can also use this interface to move the app icons from menu page to menu page on your device.
First, to use that apps tab, you'll need an app that'll read PDF files.
The file structure on an iPad is different than that from a computer or Mac. There is no general 'overall' file manager. Every file on your iPad needs to be associated with an app. So to read PDF files, you'll first need to install an app. iBooks will read PDF files. as will ReaddleDocs. I also see goodreader recommended a lot. So just search for PDF reader and find one that looks good to you.
Install the app. After the app is installed, you can go to the apps tab and move files onto your device.

  • How can I find out which .pst or .ost file itunes referres to when synchronising with outlook

I´ve switched to iphone 4S from my 3Gs and would like to "clean" my itunes Sync before I use the new phone. Problem is, that the synchronisation with Outlook 2003 doesn´t work anymore. I guess the reason is that itunes refers to an old .ost or .pst file on my computer. I ve got several outlook profiles and changed from exchange to pop3. My question: How can I find out which .pst or .ost file itunes referres to?
Thanks a lot in advance :-)

Select the tune and then - Get Info - in the dialog box is a note of the Apple ID used to purchase.

  • How to deal with the extremely big *.ost files in a Terminal Server environment which is running out of space

    Hi,
Our Terminal Server is running out of hard disk space, and the major files which occupy most of the space are *.ost files of the Outook, which come form the users which use the Terminal Server all the time through remote desktop. The Outlook is installed
on the Terminal Server and various users can use it.
What would be a solution in this case. Is there a way to limit the size of the *.ost files? I read in forums that having the Outlook 2010 set up in Cached Exchange Mode isn't the best practice for an environment where the hdd space is a major constraint.
    What do you suggest?
    Thanks,

Is the Exchange server local or remote? If it's local then it might be worth considering disabling cached mode, since the traffic will be going over the local network and therefore having the data cached becomes much less useful. If it's a remote exchange
server then realistically turning off cached mode would likely make it unusable.
If Exchange is remote then other than increasing the available storage, another option might be to upgrade your Outlook / Office installation to 2013. In Outlook 2013 you can configure how much of the users mailbox is cached in terms of time, so for instance
you could set it to only cache the last 6 months worth of mail, and then all recent messages would continue to be quick to view, but older messages that are less likely to be accessed frequently would have to be downloaded from Exchange each time since they
    would no longer be cached.

I had the same problem after I gave my old iPad to my parents and tried to install Netflix. This is what you have to do:  Open iTunes on your computer, the one you sync your iPad to. Then go to iTunes Store and search for and download Netflix app. After you download it, if your iPad is set to download new purchases it may start downloading on your iPad. If so, tap and hold to delete the app (because it is trying to install the new version on the iPad) Next step, go to the App Store on your iPad and find Netflix and it should say install since you already purchased it on the computer. Tap to install, and it will say the version is not compatible, tap to download a previous version. Click that and it will install the older version!    One more thing, if and when you sync to your computer again it will say something like " Unable to install Netflix on your iPad" Just click the box to never remind you again, because it's trying to sync the newer Netflix app to your iPad, but it doesn't work so it displays the message. The old app will remain on the ipad. Hope this helps, good luck

  • When I clicked on ost file and nothing. How to open it?

I decided to go ahead this morning and set up Outlook 2013 this morning.
When I clicked on it, it came up with this message:
"Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. The file C:\Users\XXX\AppData\local\Microsoft\Outlook\XXX_m sn.ost cannot be opened."
I looked the file is there, and Outlook '07 works just fine. All of the other O365 programs work great, no problems.
How do I open ost file?
    Ideas?

    Use OST Open File Tool
    for solution your problem.
If you can open the OST file in off-line mode, you can then create a PST and simply copy the
contents of the OST over to the PST. The trick here is opening the OST at all, since it is
typically tied to a specific profile or Exchange Server account settings. If that account is not
available, then you may not be able to open the OST.

  • Prevent OST file from being excluded from workstation backups

Is there a way to prevent OST files from being excluded from client/workstation backups in WS2012E?
    Thanks,
    Reg
This is especially a problem for clients that have migrated to Office 365 exchange service as they have no local backup of emails that were deleted and think synced with Office 365.
    Reginald Hook

OST files are not a local backup, they are a cache of what is in the mailbox.

  • How to tackle corrupt OST File Problem ???

In past days I faced lot of problem due to inaccessible and unreadable offline storage (.ost) file. By the manual methodology, I was unsuccessful to tackle this problem along with it took lot of my time. Then after few days, I found
SysTools OST Converter, it is one best third party OST file recovery application that retrieve my OST file database just in few seconds. It provides me facility to split my large OST file in small PST files.
You can search this SysTools OST Converter in-

  • How to recover access to OST file if removed Exchange Server

I am just one person and don't want to spend $200 for a OST to PST conversion, to recover a handful of contacts, not emails, that I neglected to archive before removing my Exchange email account.  I have the OST file, and its on the same machine, but
unable to re-add the Exchange Account as the Server is no longer there.
ALL the threads on this are full of 3rd party tool self promotion, that I frankly can't trust.  I can't believe there isn't a sanctioned MSFT approach for this common problem.
    Anyone with an official answer?

    Hi
If you don’t want to purchase third party application, then you can follow manual steps of Microsoft. These steps really work to access OST file without any Exchange
server, but this take lot of time.
There is also some better solution that takes very small time period to recover OST database without spending money. SysTools release its
latest version of freeware OST to PST that convert 25 items per folder. Few feature are mentioned below-
    Advance Scan Mode
     Recover
OST Data (Mails, contacts, journal, to-do list) in tree like structure
     Convert
OST in EML, MSG and PST
    Preview Option
     Selection
    Facility
     Split
    Option
     Naming
    Convention for EML and MSG.

    1) For some reason this happens once in a while with FAT32 enabled external harddrives. I have no idea why this happens but it most easily solved by reformatting the drive. First make sure you've copied everything from the external drive to your internal harddrive. You've done this earlier so I assume you know how to do this.
Now the reformatting part. Open Finder and go to Applications. Look for the folder called "Utilities". Click on it. In it you find a program called "Disk Utility". Click on it. Now look for the external drive. You probably see two entries for the disk. Click on the one that contains the name of the drive NOT the one that describes the disk (Like for example 320.07 GB Samsung S2 Portable Media).
Now you see four tabs in the righthand part of the window. They're called "First Aid", "Erase", "RAID" and "Restore". Click on "Erase". This opens the tab with (amongst others) a dropdownbox (Format) and a textbox (Name) . In the dropdownbox select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Take note! This selection disables usage of the drive with Windows PC's. If your goal is to share the drive with Windows PC's select the MS-DOS FAT option.
Enter a label for the drive in the textbox Name. Now click on the button "Erase". This will format the drive.
Now when it's done you can copy back all the items you've copied to your internal harddrive earlier.
    2) Opening two windows like Explorer on Windows is opening two Finder windows on the Mac. Simply click on the background. In the menubar you items like 'Finder", "File", "Edit", "View", et cetera. Click on "File" and "New Finder Window". Do this two times. Alternatively you can click on the background and press CMD-N two times.
    3) You can right click on the trackpad. This however depends on if you've enabled the feature in System Preferences. In the topmenubar click on the Apple icon and select "System Preferences". Now look for Trackpad in Hardware. Click on it. You see three tabs with the names "Point & Click", "Scroll & Zoom" and "More Gestures". Select "Point & Click" and look for "Secondary Click'. Make sure it is checked and make sure it has written "Click or tap with two fingers" written beneath "Secondary Click". When you're done exit System Preferences. Now select the background and tap with two fingers on the trackpad. This should open the contextuel menu with options like "New Folder", "Get Info" et cetera.

  • How do i move files from pc to icloud?

I have 2 questions, first of all how do I move files from my PC to icloud?  Secondly how do I access icloud from my PC so I can view and grab files in case I need them?  I have about 7 GB of photos and videos from my iphone4 that I want to move to icloud and I just bought 100GB of icloud storage so I can store stuff on the cloud.  I am sorry for the newbie question.

What is it then? How and what exactly do i use it for? My i pad says there is not enough storage available so i have purchased more in i cloud. I now want to save some TV programmes and films to i cloud to free up some space but don't know how to... When you are told there is not enough space to download you are prompted to go to settings and to purchase more storage - so it is not unreasonable to assume that this will solve the problem - or am I missing something here? Or is this just a way for apple to get money out of me?
If this is not what it is meant for then what is it meant for? Is it just space to back up files to? If so then surely what i need is stored there - so i can delete the TV programmes from my i pad and grab them from i cloud later?
    Am rather perplexed...

  • How do I delete files permanently from a usb flash key? On my mac (Yosemite 10.10) it's telling me the files are deleted, however on plugging key into television they're still there

I've a problem I've never come across before and it's how to permanently delete files on a usb flash key? I've just migrated from using Windows for 15 years onto Apple iMac and had been deleting files easily and permanently from the key on Windows without any hassle and thought I'd done the same on my iMac but seemingly they're still there as the tele is showing them when key is plugged in, BUT they can not be seen on iMac. I wondered why the key wouldn't take anymore files after, what I thought was, deletion and now I know why-imac hasn't deleted them!
I've actually gone into Disk Utility and formatted the key in it's usual FAT32 format to finally delete the files.  Anyone any ideas as to why this happens and how to solve this please?
    Many thanks

In addition to what Drew wrote, remember the Mac has a data fork and a resource fork.
Here is an old thread but a nice recap by Dr. Smoke
    ._Files
Note that the ._file files you note are the resource forks of Mac files you copied to the drive from your Mac, and these are only visible when you use the Flash drive on a PC. These are normal and indicate the Flash drive is already formatted for Windows.
When you copy or save a file from a Mac OS X system to a Windows shared volume or a Windows-formatted disk, the Mac creates two files: the data fork (xxx) and the resource fork (._xxx). This is called Apple Double Format and is normal. The resource fork contains additional data about the file that is exclusive to the Mac that cannot be saved otherwise on Windows-formatted disks. This is new with Mac OS X, as documented in Mac OS X: Apple Double Format Creates File Name With the Prefix '._'.
The resource fork files (._xxx) are necessary if you want to copy the file back to the Mac and retain the metadata. The resource forks of files are invisible when they are used on the Mac: the Mac OS Extended file system (aka HFS Plus or HFS+) uses forked files, with a file having both data and resource forks.
You can delete the resource forks on the Windows disk if and only if you don't care about losing the resource fork information should you copy them back to the Mac, such as comments, image preview icon, etc. Some Mac applications use the resource fork data, so deleting the resource fork can be problematic if you copy the file back to the Mac. Likewise moving the file while not also moving its associated resource fork when using the data on a PC can result in problems when using some files again on the Mac.
You can't prevent the resource forks from being created if you copy or save files from the Mac to the Windows share or Windows-formatted disk via Finder.
