How to partition my imac

Every time i try to partition my hard drive it says my version of operating system is old and therfore i get an error message
I use snow lepeord 10.6.8 and have tried using Disk utility and Boot Camp please help
Regards Tony

I have never heard, if that is the actual error message. Usually it says something like "update the firmware" but it is still missleading and ambiguous. And there is no firmware update.
He said he tried Boot Camp, so that would have had to be "Assistant."
Try using your OS X DVD and repair the hard drive.
Zap PRAM.
Repair Permissions (while booted from your hard drive, not from DVD)
Do have a clone or TimeMachine backup.
How old or what model of iMac? 2009 or earlier? in some cases if the hard drive has never been reformatted it may have an old partition table.

If you used Disk Utility first, that could make it harder to remove the partition it created and create using BCA.

  • Windows 7 partition on imac 21.5" mid-2011

    hi,
I want to partition my imac so I can go from Yosemite to Windows 7. When using boot camp, I do not have the option "Create a windows 7 install disk" although I have a disk drive on my mac.
Can someone help me with the installation ?
    Lea

    1. You need a physical DVD. If you have a valid ISO, you can burn it to a physical DVD - Disk Utility 12.x: Burn a disk image to a CD or DVD.
    2. Your Optical drive should be functional.
    3. Run Bootcamp Assistant. Check both boxes (Download Software, Install Windows).
    4. You will need a USB2 (not a USB3) flash drive, from which BC drivers will be used. It will be erased and formatted to FAT32, and BCA will download drivers from Apple servers.
Please see How to install Windows using Boot Camp - Apple Support
Most Macs with built-in Optical drives do not provide the option to create a USB-based Windows Installer and require physical media. Some 2011-2012 Notebooks are an exception.

  • How do I stop iMac from going to sleep automatically after 15minutes of inactivity

How do I stop imac from shutting down automatically after 15minutes of inactivity, trying to play music but the imac keeps going to sleep, tried changing power saving preferences to never shut down, never go to sleep, unticked put the hard disks to sleep, automatically reduce brightness, but still goes to sleep.

    Try a PRAM/NVRAM reset.
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
After resetting NVRAM or PRAM, you may need to reconfigure your settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information. If issues persist, your Mac's logic board battery may need to be replaced. The logic board battery helps retain NVRAM/PRAM settings when your computer is shut down. You can take your Mac to a Mac Genius or Apple Authorized Service Provider to replace the battery on the logic board.

  • How to Sleep an IMac using the Magic Mouse

I received a Magic Mouse as a Christmas present. It works really nice but I
must be doing something wrong as it is battery hog. It is just the middle
of January (less than a month of use) and the 2nd set of batteries are now
down to 40%. I noticed it starts getting a little flakey at 30% so I may have
to replace the 2nd set soon. Yes they were good when installed as it read
    100%.
I have not figured out how to Sleep the iMac and turn off the bluetooth
Magic Mouse. If I put the iMac to sleep with the Mouse, it wakes when I
slide the Magic Mouse power switch to OFF. I must be doing something
    wrong.
Again, I like the Magic Mouse but really likes it suck down batteries.

Same problem here. Batteries last about 10 days. Checked each with a digital multimeter. One battery was drained, the other was perfect.
I replaced the dead battery and marked the other one I left in. One week later, the new battery was dead. The marked battery was fine. The mouse is defective, it is only using the power on one side. Time for a return to the Apple Store. I hope it will be a quick swap.

How do i get iMac to move past grey screen.

Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Failing at Partitioning my iMac HD

    Hi Guys,
This is my first time posting so sorry if it is in the wrong section. I am trying to partition my iMac HD for 100GB for Windows XP. The first problem I encounter is this, in Boot Camp Assistant it says this "The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again. ", then I "Verify Disk" in Disk Utility and it says something has an invalid item count it should be something instead of something. So... I try to boot from the install disk that came with my iMac and it spins for about 15-20 seconds and then spits it out, my iMac reads all other discs. I have tried booting into safe mode and booting up and holding CMD + S and then put fsck -fy, when I do that it says the same as it does in Disk Utility then it says it's repaired but it hasn't. Any help will be MUCH appreciated.
    Thankyou

When you insert the Leopard disc and restart with the C key held down, do you still get to Installer's first screen? Are you able to run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu? When you are doing this, does performance seem normal (for running off the optical drive), or does it stall?
In Disk Utility, when you look at the sidebar, does the internal drive have the +Macintosh HD+ volume indented under it, or is it just the internal drive by itself with no volume under it?
You said that if you select the drive in the sidebar, you are not allowed to do +Repair Disk+ on the +First Aid+ tab? If so, and if there is a volume under the drive, try selecting it (instead of the drive) and going to the +First Aid+ tab. Can you them run +Repair Disk+ ?
If there is no volume under the drive, it is possible that you have a serious hard drive failure.
If you have not already, you should try this procedure to reset SMU (power management)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767
Be sure to unplug everything. When you reconnect just the power cord, if you have been using a crowded or old power strip, try connecting it directly to a wall outlet, at least initially for this test. Try powering it up with nothing connected, except the power cord. Is there any improvement?
If not, based on what you described, my guess is that your hard drive has become faulty. If it is also not booting or running normally from the optical drive now, then it may be something else.

Is there a way to find out how many hours an iMac has been running? I am thinking of buying a second hand iMac 20' or 21.5' as for space reasons, the actual 27' versions are too big. And of course, all adverts state "hardly never used"!!

In the case of using Target Disk mode between computers, a similar restriction is also present. The adapter will work in Target Disk Mode; however, it will only do so if first plugged into the system before invoking target disk mode so it can be initialized by the firmware.
