How to password protect folders

I have looked on the forums and I have found that it is somehow possible, but there are no explanations on how to do it, it just shows how to hide the folders. I don't want to hide anything, I would just like to password protect the folder. How can I do this?

Bokat57's suggestion is an excellent one, suitable for almost any purpose. The subject folder is well-protected, and when the encrypted disk image is opened, the folder and its contents can be manipulated and changed just as in their original, unencrypted state. (The only thing to watch out for is that you can't expand the folder and its contents beyond the size of the disk image you create.) Finally, when you're done with the folder, just eject the disk image and everything is all encrypted again.
Spotlight will not, by default, index the contents of the expanded folder. It can, however, be enabled via terminal. With the disk image open, enter this command in terminal:
sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/[volumename]
- where [volumename] is the name of the expanded, mounted disk image. There is little downside to enabling indexing in this fashion, because the index for that volume is stored on the disk image, and when it's ejected (i.e., re-encrypted), it becomes invisible to Spotlight. That means that Spotlight only works to search it while it's mounted. When it's not mounted, the contents are private again.

  • How to password protect sensitive info

    Hey all,
I have an Imac that is shared by the family. Occasionally, the kids move or delete things that I need for work.
Can anyone help me with how to password protect specific folders so that the Imac is open to use but some files can not be accessed without a password.
I would settle for a "hiding" program so they can't delete what they can't see.
    Thanks

You can use Disk Utility to create encrypted disk images of your secret folders (menu File > New), also encrypted sparse images that can grow as you add more data to it.
But the different User Accounts for each member of family is by far the most friendly and natural solution IMO.
For your common family email, you know you could just create yet another User Account and name it "Family Account" or whatever, and it would be the one which hosts family mail?

  • How to password protect a numbers document

I'm trying to figure out how to password protect a numbers document.

And the Numbers User Guide, supplied with iWork '08, make no mention of password protection, which was introduced in Numbers '09.
Looks like the best option is Wayne's second suggestion—open via File > Print > PDF > Open in Preview, then Save the resulting PDF document with encryption turned on.
An alternate, if you want the recipients to receive a copy of the Numbers '08 file, and to be able to edit that file, you could enclose it in a secure disk image file.
    The basic procedure is to:
Use Disk Utility to create a new, blank, sparse disk image, assign a password and save.
Double-click the .dmg file (and enter the password when requested) to mount the disk image on your desktop, then Save a copy of your file to the (open) disk image.
When done, eject the image, and upload the (encrypted) .dmg file to the website.
Detailed instructions may be found in Disk Utility's Help files.
Launch DU (found in the Utilities folder in Applications), click the Help menu and choose Disk Utility help.
Go to the index, scroll to and click Security, then click a title similar to "Protecting confidential documents in a secure disk image." (a search on 'confidential' should also take you to a list containing that title.)
My version of DU is old enough that sparse images hadn't been introduced, or I'd post a copy of the article here.

How to password protect numbers file on iphone?
I've made a password protected numbers file on iMac and saved it to itunes.
When i open this file on my iphone for the first time i have to type in the password. But afterwards it's not protected anymore and i can open the file without the password!
How can i secure my files?

There is at this time no way to put a password in the Numbers app nor on a Numbers spreadsheet, and as Michael said it's not something a third-party developer could add. You can suggest that Apple add a password feature via their feedback pages:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback
or you can look for a third-party spreadsheet app that does allow password-protecting a sheet. Documents To Go from Dataviz is a commonly-recommended app that supports spreadsheets, but I don't know if they support passwording.

  • Backing up password protected folders

I want to use the instructions in this link to create an encrypted disc image on an external hard drive so that one folder with important files is password protected.  I've never done this before.
    Two questions:
    1)  Is there a more current or better way to create a password protected folder than these instructions?  Or is this the latest and best way to do it?  (It seems like I read somewhere there is a way to password protect folders without creating a disc image, but I can't remember for sure.)
    2)  I use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup my external hard drive to a second external hard drive.  It don't have it set up to create bootable mirror copies of the drive, rather it goes file by file and simply copies whatever new files and folders were recently added.  Is there any reason to believe that the encryption and password protection on the one password-protected folder won't transfer over perfectly to the second drive?  Obviously, the copy of the password protected folder needs to work as perfectly and easily as the original.

    Dave,
When a disk image is copied (or otherwise backed up), the copy will contain the same files as the original (at the time the copy was made, of course). Also, the password for the copy will be the same as the original.
    Your files should be safe

    Hi,
Can anyone inform me how to password protect iphone on boot/startup like a normal phone/smartphone. Im not talking about the passcode lock feature.

I'm not sure what you are looking for, Joe. The passcode lock code is also required when restarting the phone after turning it off, and when rebooting after a reset procedure.

  • How to password protect individual folders?

I am trying to protect some files for work on my mac using a password, but haven't been able to find a support page on how to do so. I can change permissions, but I do not want to make myself enter a password every time I logon to the computer. I would like to just password protect a specific folder (or files if I cannot protect a folder).

    Thanks

Is the only solution to this to not save
the password to my keychain and just remember it?
There are some other options you might consider for using keychains...
    1. You can set your "login" keychain to automatically lock itself after a certain number of minutes. Launch "Keychain Access" in your Utilities folder. Select "login" in the keychain list then select "Edit -> Change settings for Keychain 'login'...". After the specified number of minutes the keychain will lock and anyone who accesses something on your system (that tries to get a password from the keychain) will have to enter your account password to unlock it.
    2. You can give your "login" keychain a password that is different from your account password. As above, launch Keychain Access, select the login keychain and go to "Edit -> Change Password for Keychain 'login'...". Once you've done this your login keychain will not automatically unlock when you first login to your account. You will have to enter the new keychain password before any apps can read or write data to it. You can use this in combination with #1 above to have the keychain automatically re-lock itself after a certain number of minutes if you want. Note that once you've done this it has the side-effect that if you ever change your account password it will not change the login keychain's password... the login keychain will retain it's own separate password.
    3. You can create one or more additional keychains that have their own passwords. This is what I do for storing various pieces of secure information - I have one for personal stuff and another for work related stuff. Similar to #2 above these additional keychains will not be automatically unlocked when you login to your account. In Keychain Access choose "File -> New Keychain...". Give the new keychain a password that's different from your account password. In this case other applications that are "keychain aware" (such as the disk image mounter) will not use the additional keychain(s) by default. But you can manually unlock these keychains and then view the secure info you've stored there. So instead of just storing password "hints" like S.U. suggested you can store the actual passwords inside these keychains without worrying about someone else getting to the information unless they know that password to unlock that particular keychain. Also note that if an application does store a password item in your "login" keychain you can easily move it to one of these additional keychains by simply dragging and dropping the item from the "login" keychain to your other keychain within Keychain Access.
Keychains can be very versatile but there's not too much documentation or tips available for using them.

  • How to password protect non .mac web site

does anyone have step-by-step directions on how to make my web page password protected on a non .mac web space?
    for example, http://www.yoursite.net/~userid
My internet service provider does not support web page creation, they just provide the space.
The only thing they said was the path to my directory is /rmgrazi/public_html/ and I should create my index.html file inside the public folder. I've tried creating and uploading a .htaccess file in the public folder, and then putting a .htpasswd file in my root directory /rmgrazi/
This doesn't seem to work. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for your help -- I'm not an expert by any means -- this is my first website... just wanting to put up a family website to share with friends & people I know.
    OK, the url is http://www.hickorytech.net/~rmgrazi/
Right now I just have a blank page up that says "test website"
My .htaccess file is located in /rmgrazi/public_html/ (yes, I put it inside the public folder in order to password protect my whole site).
By the way I'm using TextEdit in OS X, so when I upload the original file with Fetch, it looks like htaccess.txt -- after it's uploaded (as text, not binary of course) then I simply change the name to .htaccess
My .htaccess file includes the following:
    AuthUserFile /rmgrazi/.htpasswd
    AuthName Members Area
    AuthType Basic
    Require valid-user
Then I uploaded the .htpasswd one level up to /rmgrazi/ like it says in .htaccess.
The text in this file is just one line with my username:password (the password is written in code). I found a website that does this automatically. Then I just cut & paste it in apple+v
I tried using the Terminal application in OS X panther to see if the server path needs to be longer -- I logged into my ftp.hickorytech.net and entered "pwd" -- that command is supposed to show the server path. /rmgrazi/public_html/ are the only folders I can see. "/" is as far back as it will show.
In Fetch I can change the permissions for .htaccess and .htpasswd by clicking Get Info -- I tried all different combinations, 644, 711, etc... Maybe my permissions are set wrong?

  • Password Protect Folders/Pictures

I have a motorola xoom and a razr maxx and have not been able to find any information or how to's on the following:
Can you password protect certain folders or apps?  I have a five year old son and he frequently plays games and apps on my phone and tab, but I don't want him to access certain apps or files.  So I moved them into a folder on the home screen, but can't find a way to lock the folder.  Does anyone know how to lock the folders (password protect) or apps?
I also have pictures that I would like to move from the camera/gallery and hide the pictures, but can't seem to do this to photos that are already in the gallery?

As demmo86rt stated, a third party app from the Play Store will accomplish this - ES File Explorer allows you to "hide" folders, and move things to and from an SD Card more easily than the built in file system; other file manager apps may allow passwording and other options.  Explore the Play Store, read reviews, try the apps to see what works for you.
