How to paste an image on a layer mask?

Hi All,
I've just started using PS Elements 10 again after not having used it for some time, and I've forgotten a few things. When I paste an image which I've selected from another image (image A) into a layer mask for image B, the image A selection appears in black and white. Also, is there a quick way to return PS Elements 10 to its default settings? I'd be grateful if you could help with these questions. Cheers!

Hi Again Michel,
I guess I'd better say what I'm trying to do and then maybe you can help me. Maybe I'm not using the correct tool. What I wanted to do is cut a person from an image and superimpose this person on a second image. I thought I did this using the layer mask. When I do this, and look at the background image, all I can see is an outline of the shape of the person's image on the second image. Can you perhaps point me to a video which explains how to do this. I thought I had to use a layer mask to do this. Thanks for staying with me.

  • Is it possible to paste two images into one layer?

I'm having some issues pasting two images into one layer. Every time I paste the second image, it automatically creates a new layer...is there anyway to prevent that from happening? I'm making an animation on photoshop and I want there to be more than image in some of the frames. Please let me know if you have any suggestions! Thanks!

You can merge the two layers together once they're position. Select the top layer and choose merge down or select both and choose merge layers (from the layers menu).

  • Photoshop Elements 13 how to open an image as a layer?

Hello, I recently received as asked Photoshop Elements 13 for Christmas, and have been using Gimp for about a year now as a substitute. However, when I went to start a project, I couldnt figure out how to open an image as a layer. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Heres an example with 2 images. I want to get the image you see in this picture, and place it in the original image as a layer, not a separate project.

  • Image in a layer mask with gradient problem

    Hi,
I have a image in a layer mask with an gradient on a 30c0m0y100k background and at the gradient from image to background I always get a white "shine". which NOT appears when the background is the standard photoshop-black definition in all colors.
please have look also here (where the problem is): http://adobe.ly/1yXBCix

Hi, I'd like to display a dynamic image from the web inside a JLabel or any other swing component it could work in. I've been looking on the Swing tutorials and others forums, all I can have is that a JLabel can load an Icon object, defined by an image URL, but can this URL be like "http://xxxxx/image.jpg" somehow or can it only be a local image URL?>
I do not know why you start talking about an image on the web then go on to show concerns about whether it will work for a 'local' URL.
But perhaps this answer will cover the possibilities.
So long as you can from an URL to the image, and the bytes are available for download (e.g. some web sites wrap a direct call to an image in HTML that embeds the image), the URL based icon constructors will successfully load it.
It does not matter if that URL points to
    - a web site,
    - a local server ('localhost'),
    - an URL representation of a File on the local file system, or
    - it is inside a Jar file that is on the application's run-time classpath.
How you go about forming a valid URL to a 'local resources' (or indeed what you regard as local resources) is another matter, depending on the form of the project, and how the resources are stored (see list above).
Probably the main reason that examples use images at a hard coded URL on the net is that it makes an 'image example' self contained. As soon as we compile and run it, we can see the result. I have posted a few examples like that on these forums.

  • How to paste paths to a new layer ??

I`m having trouble pasting paths to a new layer from a current layer....
I select the paths - edit/cut - select the new layer as visible and blue highlighted in the layers palette - edit/paste... the paths get pasted back to the previous layer instead of the new layer...
I would also like it if I could use "paste in front" to have them paste into the same xy location in the new layer.

On the layers palette, right click on the three little lines at the top
At the bottom of the list you will see an option of "Paste remembers layers"
    Untick it
    I'll bet that solves it

  • How to crop an image on a layer?

I am using PSE 6 for Mac. I have dragged an image onto a canvas with three layers. When I crop the image using either the crop tool or a selection>image≥crop, it crops the entire canvas, rather than just the image on the layer. Can this be done?
Related question: I dragged an image onto the canvas and wanted to scale it up. I grabbed it with the move tool and dragged the corner box, holding the shift key to constrain proportion. But it does not constrain with the shift key. Am I doing it wrong?
    Thanks.

To just crop a layer, you need to use the rectangular marquee tool to select where the layer is to be cropped then invert the selection and press the delete key. (Shortcut for Selection<Inverse = I believe on Mac it's Command + Shift + I...on PC it's Ctrl + Shift + I).
This did not work for me. I got an error message that "the Smart Object is not directly editable."

You need to use the transform command not the move tool. Shortcut Edit<Free Transform = I believe on Mac it's Command + T...on PC it's Ctrl T.
Yes, hold in the shift key to constrain it to scale. If you want it to scale to the center instead of to one of the corners, hold in the Shift + Option key (I believe it's Option on the Mac...On PC it's Shift + Alt.) Alternately, you can set the width (either by using transform handles or by inputting numbers in the width box) then click the chain between width and height in the options bar to make the height match the width.
I have stumbled onto the solution: if I DON'T hold down the shift key while dragging, proportions are constrained. If I DO hold down the shift key, proportions are NOT constrained. This seems to be the opposite of what I remember, but it works.
    Thanks.

  • In RGB mode, why does pasting 50% gray into a layer mask actually put K 59% in the mask?

Create a new (small) document in RBG mode, 8 bit, transparent background.
Fill the resulting Layer 1 with 50% gray, 100% opacity.  The eyedropper reports RGB=(128,128,128).
Copy the layer to the clipboard.
Create a new Layer 2. Fill it with Green #00ff00 (the contents don't actually matter here).
Add a layer mask to Layer 2.
Bring that mask up for editing.
Paste in the contents of the clipboard.  The eyedropper reports the contents of the mask as K 59%.
    I was expecting 50% gray (or K 50%). Why did I get K 59%?
    Addenda:
I'm using CS3 on a Mac. I haven't had a chance to see if the same thing happens with more current versions of PS.
Apply the layer mask in Layer 2. Extract the transparency to a new layer.  The eyedropper gives the RGB of the
new layer as (106,106,106), with variations pixel by pixel of plus/minus 1.
Take the Difference between that new layer and Layer 1; the eyedropper gives the RGB of the difference as (22,22,22),
again with variations of plus/minus 1.
Paste the contents of the clipboard into a new layer.  The eyedropper gives the RGB contents of that new
layer as (128,128,128), both without and with a Black & White adjustment applied.
Create a new layer, add a layer mask, fill the mask with 50% gray. The eyedropper gives the contents of
the new mask as (128,128,128) (now as expected).
The 50% gray used above is just for simplicity. I'm actually interested in inserting a complicated RGB
image containing only shades of gray into the layer mask. This example indicates that pasting won't
preserve the gray levels. Indeed, when I replace the initial 50% gray with a Black to White gradient,
the differences between the initial gradient and the one in the mask range roughly quadratically from 0 at 0,
      22 at 128, and 0 at 255.

Thanks. First doing Edit > Color Settings, Gray > Gray Gamma 2.2 resulted in putting 50% gray in the layer mask.
Does changing the Gray setting have any effect on channel calculations, via Image > Calculations?
    Or what you get from
Image > Apply Image, Channel > Transparency ?
I don't see "sGray" listed among the options for Gray in the Color Settings. Is it somewhere else?

  • Can you designate an image as a layer mask?

I've been wondering if this is possible for a long time -- say I have an awesome grayscale image that I want to use as a layer mask for another layer. Is there a way to make that happen?

Copy your image to the clipboard (i.e. Select All>Copy)
Then Alt or Option click on the layer mask and Edit>Paste

  • Pasting an image as new layer: Any way to turn off automatic resize?

If I paste a large image onto a smaller one, CS5 will automatically resize it so that it fits in the frame. You can then manually transform it back into its original size but this is inconvenient for what I'm doing, so I was wondering if there was a way to turn that off so that it keeps the original size (with parts of the layer ending up off-screen). Even better would be if I could just paste without automatically entering free transform, as with the earlier versions of Photoshop.
    Thanks in advance.

You can disable "free transform" in the Preferences/General

  • How to paste pictures, images from the clipboard

    Hey all,
    I've made a java-application and with a click on a button, I jump to a drawprogram.
When I've finished my picture, copied it to the clipboard(ctrl c), I want to show it in my application.
How can I do this and in which component must I paste it?
    Thanks

There isn't a way to do it that is part of Lightroom. There is a plug-in that might help you, though. Check it out here: Locktastic
It doesn't say if its compatible with LR4, but you can try it to find out.
Plug-ins aren't usually as efficient as built-in functionality (like PM), but it might be a solution for you.

    Point p = tabbedpane.getLocation();
    Image.setLocation(p.x-d,p.y-c);

  • How can I automatically create a rectangular layer mask from an irregularly shaped selection?

I am trying to automatically crop images. The subject is on a white background and extends from the left edge of the image to the right. The top and bottom of the subject are within the frame. I need to crop a certain distance from the top and bottom of the subject and a predefined width that would be calculated from the height of the subject.
My current idea is to create a duplicate layer and run Threshold on it, which allows me to select the subject clearly. Once I have the subject selected I can use Image -> Crop to create the desired rectangle, but I can't figure out a way to create a mask from the irregularly selected subject. Does anyone know a way to take a selection and convert it to a rectangle? I hope this makes sense, I can try to explain better if not. Thanks.
