How to paste paths to a new layer ??

I`m having trouble pasting paths to a new layer from a current layer....
I select the paths - edit/cut - select the new layer as visible and blue highlighted in the layers palette - edit/paste... the paths get pasted back to the previous layer instead of the new layer...
I would also like it if I could use "paste in front" to have them paste into the same xy location in the new layer.

On the layers palette, right click on the three little lines at the top
At the bottom of the list you will see an option of "Paste remembers layers"
Untick it
I'll bet that solves it

You know that you lost the layers when you saved it as a jpeg, right? But you're saying you can't add layers to the jpeg now when it's open in the editor? Go to Image>mode and be sure it's RGB, for starters. Are all the commands in the Layer menu grayed out?

Work Path Wont Start New Layer

Usually when I'm working in photoshop, and I go to create a path using the pen tool, my photoshop automatically creates a layer for the shape. Recently, my photoshop has suddenly stopped creating these layers on it's own. I will draw the shape on the image, and it just sits there, with no way to manipulate it (because it has no layer..) is this a photoshop glitch? Is there some setting that I've tripped? How do I get it back?

A path created using the pen tool does not automatically create a new layer.
Once created, a path can be manipulated by using the black & white arrow tools ( path selection tool and direct selection tool ). With the arrow tool active click on the path of interest and manipulate it as necessary. Of course, you can create a path on a separate layer if you want to do that. You can also manually create a new "layer" in the paths panel and this is useful for keeping different paths isolated and named.

I've just started using PS Elements 10 again after not having used it for some time, and I've forgotten a few things. When I paste an image which I've selected from another image (image A) into a layer mask for image B, the image A selection appears in black and white. Also, is there a quick way to return PS Elements 10 to its default settings? I'd be grateful if you could help with these questions. Cheers!

I guess I'd better say what I'm trying to do and then maybe you can help me. Maybe I'm not using the correct tool. What I wanted to do is cut a person from an image and superimpose this person on a second image. I thought I did this using the layer mask. When I do this, and look at the background image, all I can see is an outline of the shape of the person's image on the second image. Can you perhaps point me to a video which explains how to do this. I thought I had to use a layer mask to do this. Thanks for staying with me.

How To Save Path when setting new env variable!!

I am trying to learn how to properly include something in my path. When I run the command echo $PATH, I get /Xcode3.12/usr/bin:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbi n:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/opt/local/bin:/ opt/local/sbin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin,,,,,how ever, as soon as I leave the Terminal and relaunch it and retype the echo $PATH command I no longer see what I just included in the path before logging out. This is what i do first:
export PATH=/Xcode3.12/usr/bin:${PATH}
export PATH
export MANPATH=/Xcode3.12/usr/share/man:{MANPATH}
export PATH
After typing this in the Terminal, I exit the Terminal and it is no longer there. Can anyone explain to me how I go about saving this so it remains permanently part of the PATH. The reason why I'm asking about this is I am trying to install OpenMotif and it is asking me to add the lib path to the DYLDLIBRARYPATH envi.,, I have no idea what this is. Any help would be greratly appreciated.

You are going to have to post the contents of your .bash_profile file. Make sure to put it between two lines of:

It isn't normal. You have some duplicates in there. Still, you have at least two different ports packages in there. Even when correct, your path is going to be pretty long.
You normally shouldn't source .bash_profile. It is loaded automatically when you login. If you keep source-ing it, it will just keep adding junk to your path and other variables.
When hacking around on these files, it is best to keep several (or at least two) terminal windows open. That way, you can hack up a file, then open a new window to check it out. If that new window hangs entirely, you still have one functional window where you can fix it.

That sounds like you are doing my job!
You don't need curl, it comes with the OS. You don't need libxml2, that comes with the OS too. Same for pcre.
I know imagemagick builds right out of the box on MacOS X. I'm still not convinced you need openmotif. If you do, doug has posted a link to the official installer package for it.

It sounds like the ports packages are all screwed up.
I wasn't kidding about you doing my job. Those are all the tools I use on a daily basis. Normally I work in Linux, but I am supposed to be getting a new Mac soon that I can use for local development. I plan to be building all those tools on my machine, but I won't use any porting package. So, I'll be glad to help you install them, because I need to install them myself (I've already done ImageMagick - it was easy). But I can't fix bugs in the ports packages.

Pasting an image as new layer: Any way to turn off automatic resize?

If I paste a large image onto a smaller one, CS5 will automatically resize it so that it fits in the frame. You can then manually transform it back into its original size but this is inconvenient for what I'm doing, so I was wondering if there was a way to turn that off so that it keeps the original size (with parts of the layer ending up off-screen). Even better would be if I could just paste without automatically entering free transform, as with the earlier versions of Photoshop.

While using marquee tool to cut and past section to new layer, outline stays transparent

Hello,
I am testing the trial version of Photoshop CS5.5 and I am experiencing a weird issue while using the marquee tool while selecting a portion of an image, cutting that section and pasting it to a new layer.
First off I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, 2.8Ghz Dual Core Processor, 4 Gigs Memory, 2 Gig Video card and current on updates with a fresh vanilla install of CS5.5. Not filters or plugin installed.
Step by step of issue is as follows,
I take an image on layer 1 and while using the marquee tool select and area on that image. I want to cut and Past In Place that selection on a new layer, layer 3.
This will allow me to insert another layer, layer 2, in between layer 1 and layer 3 and show what ever I place on layer 2 but still have a complete background if the image does not fill the entire transparent section.
A good example is a wanted poster. You have your picture frame with the Wanted letters and reward. In the center you have a transparent square. In the back you have a black background. In between the frame and the background you place a face. The face will not fill the entire sqaure so you will see some of the black back ground.
Now the problem appears to be that the dotted line of the marquee selection makes so you can see your selection stays transparent or deletes the ares directly unter it when you cut and past to a new layer. The transparent outline looks to be the same size of the dotted line when that selection is selected. I have looked and searched for this promblem and resolution but can not see one.
The picture below is the result after I deselect the area. You can see just above another section that I tried to cover up but did not get it all.
This is driving me nuts and I just can not figure out what is causing this behavior. If I try and stretch the section, it skews the contents out of proportion.
An suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated!

Instead of cut, one way is to duplicate the layer and add a layer mask from the selection. Alt click on the layer mask icon at the bottom of the layers panel to add a Layer Mask>Hide Selection.
Then you can put a layer in the middle.
The reason your seeing what's in your screenshot is the selection is anti-aliased,

Font size changes when pasting ito new layer

Since I updated Phothoshop to CC a strange error occures. When I copy text from one layer and paste it into a new layer the font size changes. I have tried resetting the texttool but this has no effect. Does anybody know what the solution to this problem can be?

This should not happen.
Try duplicating the layer with Ctlr + J...

'Cut to new layer' function for pixel selection.

hey guys. This is a pretty minor feature, but it might be handy.
The feature would be a single comand that could remove pixels from one layer and paste them into a new layer.
CTL-X technically does this, but since CTL-X clears the selection, the paste has no guide in order paste the pixels into the same location.
CTL-C, DEL, CTL-V , has the effect of cutting pixels from one layer into a new layer while preserving the selection, but it would be nice to have as a single command.
The obvious shoice would be CTL-SHIFT-X, but that's liquify, and I like it there.
So, I propose ALT-SHIFT-X. I know that the alt-shift combination is never ever used, but honestly, it's not a really importnant feature either

Already there - control J (new layer via copy) and control Shift J (new layer via cut) - which is exactly what you have asked for. To redload the selection you can simply control click the new layer - mostly you WOULDN'T want to do this, since it just gets in the way. You could reassign them if you wanted.
Do you seriously think that photoshop version 11- wouldn't have this shortcut by now? These ones were there back in 4 or 5 at least

Copy to New Layer

Simple gray scale photo of kite in sky. The kite is not completely surrounded by sky, part of it is out of the shot. I want to make the sky flash the gray it is now to white(gif). I used the polygonal lasso tool to select the sky. I dont know how to copy it to a new layer so I can change the exposure and make one frame with the original layer showing, another with the exposed layer showing. After I select with the lasso, all the items under "layer" are grayed out including "new". I tried the new layer icon at the bottom of the palette but no go. The closest I have come is edit>copy but where to put it?
Also, if I lasso the kite, isnt it subjective which is the background and which is the foreground?

Thanks for that Bob. Got it. But having trouble finishing project. Progress so far: Lassoed the kite. Layer via copy. Now in layers palette have a thumbnail with the sky I want and the outline of the kite still visible (background)and one with just the kite with checker board sky(Layer 1). image>adjustments>exposure, 5.20 exposure/+0.2400 offset, changing the dark gray sky to 'white'. Opened the animation palette and now have kite (layer 1) as first frame. Frame delay, tweening, duplicating frames to tweak the animation I can do but the one thing missing is a frame with the "original" photo in it so the animation will flit between dark gray sky and white sky. Im guessing animation frames come from layers of the photo being worked on. So I cant just use the original as the second frame because the focus, for lack of the right term, of the palettes shift to THAT photo when I open it. How do I get the kite with the dark gray sky into the animation?

I recive an email included an embeded picture. I use gmail app and i can copy picture to clipboard, but i dont know how to paste the picture to new file and save as jpg. I can paste to new mail im gmail app or origin Apple mail app. I cant paste to pages document. Do You know some app wicth i can use to mąkę new jpg file?

The App already includes the feature. But the image has to be sent as an attachment rather than embedded in the email.

You could always try to open the email through the default mail app. Embedded Pictures in emails can be saved just fine from there.

For instance, I have a combined shape of 2 rectangles (not merged) and I want a copy of one of those rectangles as a new shape layer. I know I can duplicate the entire layer and delete the shape(s) I don't need - but I was wondering if there was an easier, more straightforward solution.

In Editor, go to the expert tab.
Open picture B, the one you wish to select the radio from to add to another picture.
Use one of the selection tools, e.g. selection brush, lasso tool, to select the object. You will see an outline ("marching ants") once the selection is complete
Go to Edit menu>copy to copy the selection to the clipboard
Open picture A, then go to Edit>paste
Use the move tool to position object from picture B.
In the layers palette you should see picture A as the background layer, and the radio B on a separate layer.

If you purchased all of the songs through itunes store, please follow these steps:
1. Open up Itunes and Click on Itunes Store
2. Once you're in the Itunes Store look to right side of the screen and you should see the word "purchased". Click purchased and you'll be sent to a purchase screen.
3. Click on "All Songs" and then it will show all the songs you've downloaded. From there you just hit the button that looks like a cloud with an arrow on it, and it will download all the songs all over again.

How to get rid of the new bottom layer with piano roll etc. in arrange??

Hey guys,
Just a quick question i suppose.
I work with 2 screens.
When I double click a midi event, i want the piano roll to open in a floating window, just like it used to be, and not in the new bottom layer (pop up) bar in the bottom of the arrange window. I want this because i like to edit on the second screen while still haveing an overview of my arrange on my 1st screen.
Does anyone know how to do this? Or perhaps know how to get rid of this new bar all together?

how annoying is it to go to a seperate screen set and then click a midi region just to edit it?
You haven't grasped the concept of screensets.
In the "old" way of working, in your arrange, you double-click on a region, which opens that region in an editor. You may have to move the editor position/size etc. You make your edits, and then close the window.
The screenset way of doing this is simpler and quicker. In your arrange, you select your region (one click, rather than a double click). You then hit a key command, lets' say "2" to switch to your editor screenset, which has the eitor or combination of editors you use, in link mode. As soon as you hit your 2 key, the editors will be recalled at the precise locations you specified, showing you the contents of your selected region.
When you are finished editing, just hit "1" to go back to your main arrange window.
Once you get used to this, you'll find it's a lot quicker and more efficient than all that rsi double clicking and window closing...
