How to Perform In-Place Upgrade of Windows Vista Home Professional amd64

I'm trying to perform an in-place upgrade of Windows Vista Home Professional amd64 but the setup process fails stating that I need to remove Windows PowerShell prior to the upgrade.
I didn't have http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928439 installed so I couldn't uninstall it.
I checked Windows features and PowerShell and the ISE were listed.
I tried removing it (via optionalfeatures.exe) but it fails with 'An error has occurred. Not all of the features were successfully changed.'
I tried installing http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928439 then removing the Windows feature - same error as above.
I tried installing http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821 then removing the Windows feature - same error as above.
I tried uninstalling http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928439 then removing the Windows feature - same error as above.
I tried performing an in-placce upgrade again and it continues to say that Windows PowerShell needs to be removed.
I cannot remove PowerShell (or the ISE) via ocsetup.exe as no such option exists according to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff716463.aspx
I tried removing it with DISM via /online /Remove-Package /Disable-Feature, but "DISM does not support servicing Windows Vista with the /Online option."
I tried sfc /scannow again - same 'Windows
Resource Protection' error.
I tried the in-place upgrade again and it still needs PowerShell to be removed.
There have been chkdsks and reboots peppered throughout this process.
I don't know what else to try & I  feel like I'm stuck in a possibly crazy catch 22 situation.
Note: This is a Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 64-bit machine.
For those that need more history on how I got here, I'm going to refer you to my 'Windows
Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation' post in the, incorrectly categorized, Windows 7 forums.  In short:
Whenever I run Windows updates, all the updates fail.  It doesn't matter if I do one, all or something in between - they all fail.
I ran sfc /scannow but that fails with 'Windows
Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation'
I tried performing an offline scan as well but that failed with the same 'Windows
Resource Protection' error.
Not sure what to do at this point and I don't know what logs would be helpful for you to review at this stage (cbs.log, windowsupdate.log, other?)

Please try below and check if we can boot normally now.
1.
Boot to Recovery console2. Use the backup
System registry hiv to replace the current hiv
In the Recovery Console.
In CMD, go to:
     %systemroot%\System32\Config\
Run: ren system system.old
Go to:
     %systemroot%\System32\Config\regback
Run: copy
     %systemroot%\system32\config\regback\system %systemroot%\system32\config
Restart your computer.
After that, please try to test if the server can boot to normal mode now.

Apologies for the delay.  I will first try your suggestion above followed by system restore if that fails.
I'll do this over the weekend (if not this evening) and update this post.

    Hello
In dec 2006 I purchased an equium laptop which was installed with windows xp. It had a free upgrade to windows vista home premium in june 2007
All the Toshiba driver info on the laptop still refers to windows xp and I wondered if a package can be downloaded to
update all the drivers to vista and change the Toshiba Assist/Protect & Fix/Preinstalled Drivers Depository/Tools & Utilities window to read Vista Home Premium instead of Windows xp.
    Thanks for advice

  • Upgrading from Windows Vista Home Premium to Vista Ultimate

    Hi all
I am trying to upgrade my windows Vista from home premium to ultimate and I have the original CD for the ultimate but when I put the CD and upgrade it wont upgrade and it gives me this message:
" - The upgrade cannot be started. To upgrade, cancel the installation and the choose to upgrade to a version of windows that is more recent than the version you are currently running."
And my computer is up to date so I dont understand is there something messing or I have to install a clean version of windows Vista?!
And if I have to install a clean version is the any way to install the windows without deleting my documents ?!
Hope someone will help me :D
    Thx

To be honest I don't know how it works exactly and maybe you should ask this on some Microsoft forum or make call by Microsoft in your country. I think they are the right address for such issues.
Of course you can make clean Vista installation. All your data can be saved if you have two partitions and all important data will be saved on second partition. When Vista installation starts for Vista destination choose first partition. This partition will be deleted but all your data on second partition will be untasted.

  • Tx2120us, upgrade from Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

I wonder if there's anyone out there who has managed to sucessfully upgrade his/her HP tx2120us tablet PC from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Ultimate or to do a fresh Windows 7 ultimate install on a HP tx2120us tablet PC.
I purchased a Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit edition AND a 320GB 7200rpm hard drive and started a fresh Windows 7 installation. After the installation was done, the network adapters fixed and wireless were working. I also managed to install the Audio drivers for the built in realtek audio adapter. Even the touchpad, touchscreen and pen seem to work but then I stopped after several attempts to install a suitable display driver for the NVIDIA G-Force video adapter. The resolution with my Vista OS is 1280 x 800 but the default Windows 7 OS only provides a generic 1064 x 768 resolution and not any download from HP could install a suitable NVIDIA driver for Windows 7.
As I stopped there I don't even know if there is a driver for the card reader or the Light Scribe DVD burner and whatever is buit in into this tx2120us.
I'd really very much appreciate if someone who had succeeded with the installation of Win 7 Ultimate 64bit on the tx2120us could provide me with working drivers or the links to them.
    thanks

  • "Windows 8.1 installation has failed" - in-place upgrade to Windows 8.1 U1

I am unable to upgrade my toshiba laptop that has Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 U1. I am getting an error message at 37% or 39% through the upgrade process and am met with an error message similar to this:
Ignore the 96%, but this is the same exact error message I am getting each time I try to do an in-place upgrade of Windows 8.1 U1 Pro.
I am currently running Windows 8 Pro on my laptop. I have the .cbs log file contents here:
    http://pastebin.com/52QpQzZA
I really would like to do an in-place upgrade and not have to re-configure all the apps and their settings again. What could be causing this failure?

I have seem to have figured out the problem after some trial and error.
First, I followed another user's solution about turning off Windows Update service before I performed the Windows 8.1 Upgrade via USB flash drive.
Second, my mistake here was I was upgrading Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 U1. When I tried upgrading Windows 8 to
Windows 8.1, it finally worked without issue.
Either I was upgrading two versions ahead that made the Windows Upgrade process fail each time or it had something to do with Windows Update service being on during the upgrade process.
    It has completed without failure!
    Thank you for your replies!

  • In-place upgrade from windows 2008 R2 to windows 2012

    Hi all,
we are currently running SAP ERP EHP7 (Netweaver 7.40 ) on Windows 2008 R2 server, MS SQL 2012 database.
Is it possible to do in-place upgrade to Windows Server 2012?
We want to do upgrade without buying new hardware  and perform system copy.
    Regards

    Hi,
the only note where we discussed our findings about in-place upgrades of the Windows operating system is SAP Note 1494740.
Even though the upgrade to Windows Server 2012 is not discussed explicitly, the note is also valid for Windows Server 2012.
The only thing you have to take care is: upgrade your system components (database, other 3rd party software) to versions supported on Windows Server 2012 before you are performing the in-place upgrade.
    Regards
    Peter

I have a new SSD drive and need to either migrate my old HD data, including the Windows 8.1 OS or do a a clean install.  I have obtained the ISO, prepared the boot for the flashdrive and downloaded the install software.  It asks for the product key.   I used the suggested BIOS reader and obtained "a" product key off the BIOS and used that it but (as above) it does not recognize the image.
How id I get my single Windows license onto my new SSD HD?  Reload, clean install, ???
How do I get the proper product key or confirm it is correct?
It is a new system with little data that I need to copy. I just want the operating system.  I have the driver disc that came with it.

  • Satellite L300 - Perform a repair installation of Windows Vista

    Hi,
I have a Satellite L300. I have NO dvd of windows vista, the seller says me that the dvd of windows is inside the pc.

    Can you help me???
*Method 3: Perform a repair installation of Windows Vista*

*To perform a repair installation of Windows Vista, follow these steps:*
    *Restart the computer.*
*Insert the Windows Vista DVD in the computer's DVD drive.*
*Note If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, click Start, type <Drive>:\setup.exe in the Search box, and then click Setup in the programs list. Then, click Install Now.*
*Click Go online to obtain the latest updates for installation (recommended).*
*Insert the product key if you are prompted for it.*
*Click to accept the Microsoft Software License Terms.*
*On the Which type of installation to you want screen, click Upgrade.*
*When the installation is complete, restart the computer, and then try to install updates again.*

    Hi fardei,
If you use the HDD recovery to reinstall Windows, your whole computer will not be formatted. Only the first partition will be deleted and thats all. Check the Toshiba document how the HDD recovery option works.
Using the Toshiba recovery disk creator tool allows you to create a recovery disk. Normally on the first start up where you purchased the notebook, you did get the following message:
    +Important INFORMATION+
+your system is equipped with hard disk recovery system. if you need to repair+
+your computer by restoring it to original factory state, you can do it directly+
+from harddisk (press F8 when you boot your computer, choose "Repair your computer"+
+and follow the menue instructions) or create a bootable Recovery Disc Medium for this purpose.+
+Toshiba recommends you to create Recovery Disc Medium using the "Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator" to ensure+

    Steve,
I appreciate your answer.  While it might work, I'm a bit hesitant to remove the other programs as a possible solution since they are all currently working.
With Acrobat 9 Pro failing with the OS 10.7 upgrade, I'm hoping that there is a less severe solution.
Since the trigger appears to be 10.7 and may have something to do with the discontinued support of Rosetta, I could be spending a few hours working on a reinstall without a change.  Yes, it might work.  The "might" is the part that makes me hesitate.
Is anyone else out there on OS 10.7 and running Acrobat 9 Pro?  Any issues with anyone else?
Thanks Steve.  I do appreciate your offering a solution.  I may end up trying it if nothing else comes together.

  • Windows 7 32-bit Upgraded from Windows Vista

    Hello Everyone
I have a Satellite A500-15M, with a Windows 7 32-bit running on it which was upgraded from Windows Vista 32-bit by an upgrade DVD from Toshiba sent to me in January.
I need to have my Windows 7 as 64-bit instead of 32-bit. I have been searching on the internet about this matter, and I have discovered that I cannot do this unless I have a fresh copy of Windows, but the only disks that I have are the Windows Vista RECOVERY DVDs, and the Windows 7 Upgrade DVD.
Is it possible to have a fresh copy of Windows Vista 64-bit from my Revocery DVDs, then upgrade to Windows 7? Or do I need a Windows 64-Bit DVD?
    I really appreciate your cooperation.
    Kind Regards,
    Ala'

    Hello
According notebook specification your notebook was delivered with Vista 32bit and 64bit dual boot.
If you have created recovery discs it will be interesting to know how many DVD disc you have.
For instance on my Satellite A500-157 I have 4 DVD discs. With other words I have recovery discs for 32 and 64bit Vista. When you start first DVD you will be asked which version you want to install.
Please check if this works with your recovery discs too.
If you have this option install Vista 64bit on your notebook and later use upgrade DVD and try to upgrade it to Win7 64bit.
Please test it and let me know if this works for you.
Depending on your answer we will search next solution for you.

  • Songs stop playing after upgrading to Windows Vista

I upgraded to Windows Vista Business the released version.
After the upgrade I started iTunes 7.02 and tried to play a song. It required me to reauthorize my song. Unfortunately, I had 5 computers already authorized so I just went to the iTune Store to deauthorized all my computers and reauthorizes the upgraded Vista computer.
After reauthorization, I still cannot play my songs. ITunes pops up with the message that my songs needs authorization. I authorize the song and it says it is okay but will not play the song.
I can still buy stuff from the iTunes Store but cannot play them or sync them with my ipod.
Has the Apple testers ran into this problem?
This is a problem for Apple since Windows Media Player works for Zune. It's sad what Microsoft has done.
        Windows Vista

I finally solved my problem and here is how I did it:
    - De-authorized my computer
    - Uninstall iTunes
    - Re-install iTunes
Now make sure you have another user account with administrator privileges.
    - Logged out of my user account
    - Logged in using the built in Administrator account
    - Launched iTunes from this account
    - Launched Windows Explorer and double clicked on one of my purchased songs.
    - Enter your password when the popup window for the password is shown.
    My song started to play.
    - Exited iTunes and logged out of that account.
    - Logged back into my user account.
    - Launched iTunes, and I was ok.

  • Upgrading to Windows vista means itunes wont detect my ipod?? Help please.

Recently upgraded to windows Vista. Big whopdeedo.
But anyway, when I plug my ipod in, windows tries to update drivers for it, but of course failas horribly.
However, this is having a knock on effect that means itunes wont detect my ipod. So, while my ipod recharges, I cannot sync it. Thus I can't add new songs and what-not.
    Please help.

Yes my ipod is jailbroken, but this has never proved an issue before.
Its not just itunes that now wont recognise my ipod, my other software wont either, and they used to work with the jailbroken ipod.
This all started after i synced a nano, then connected my ipod and a screen came up saying ipod camera connected.
I click on the camera icon in mycomputer and properties tab then selected take no action in the events tab.
This hasnt resolved my issue, and the ipod still comes up as a camera in mycomputer, the only difference being im now not prompted to choose a program to view my photos with.
This is really getting up my nose, as for the second poster, sorry that article was no help at all.
    Please someone help me
