How to persist change in finder sidebar width?

Hello guys, I want to persist change in finder sidebar width once I change it. Now what happens is that I drag to resize then go to view->show view options->Use as defaults but next time I create a new folder, it resizes to wrong setting again. I even tried resizing by holding option but no result. How can I persist this change in width
This is what it looks like when new folder is created:
but I want it to be like this each time:
How can I achieve this?
Thank you

Hi kashif789us,
Thanks for the question.   For most applications, when you resize a window, you need to quit the app and relaunch it for the changes to take affect.   The Finder app is a little different, since you can't quit it.
I would recommend that you make the change to the sidebar width, then choose Force Quit from the Apple menu.  You will be given the option to relaunch the Finder app.  When you do, choose File > New Finder Window.   You should see the resized sidebar in the new window.  When you restart your Mac, this same window should persist.
OS X Yosemite: Customize the Finder toolbar and sidebar
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19079
Customize the sidebar
Hide or show the sidebar: Choose View > Hide Sidebar or View > Show Sidebar. (If Show Sidebar is dimmed, choose View > Show Toolbar.)
Resize the sidebar: Drag the right side of the divider bar to the right or left.
Change what’s in the sidebar: Choose Finder > Preferences, click Sidebar, then select or deselect items.
Rearrange items in the sidebar: Drag an item to a new location. You can’t rearrange items in the Shared section.
Add a file, folder, or disk: Drag the item to the Favorites section.
If you don’t see the Favorites section, go to Finder > Preferences > Sidebar, then select at least one item in the section.
Add an app: Hold down the Command (⌘) key, then drag its icon to the Favorites section.
Remove an item: Drag the item icon out of the sidebar until you see a puff of smoke.
The sidebar link disappears, but the original item is still on your Mac. You can’t remove items from the Shared section.
To change other Finder preferences, choose Finder > Preferences. For more information, see Finder preferences.
To set the scrolling behavior for Finder (and other) windows, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click General.

OS X: How to quit an unresponsive application using Force Quit
Press Command-Option-Esc, then select the unresponsive app from the Force Quit window that appears, and click Force Quit.
OS X automatically relaunches the Finder when it is quit. If the Finder is unresponsive, use Force Quit to relaunch it. Select Finder in the Force Quit Window or Dock, then click Relaunch.
Give it a try!

  • How do I change the Finder Sidebar size?

It an earlier preview build of Lion, I was able to change the Finder sidebar text size to make it smaller.  The default was too large, taking up too much real estate.  Unfortunately, I don't remember what I did to fix it.  Finder Preferences and View Options don't seem to offer any option to change the sidebar's font.
    Does anyone know?

Go to System Preferences/General and check the Sidebar Icon Size box.  Make your selection.  This controls the Mailbox sidebar and the Finder sidebar.
Previous F.A.N reply answered this for me.  I'm just adding the solution to this thread.  I couldn't easily find the way to close out this query.

How do I change(or find) my restrictions passcode if I forgot it?

    Hi, klittle24.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you lose or forget a restriction passcode, you will need to perform a factory restore to remove it.  Make sure to import your photos and manually backup your device prior to processing these steps.

I know how to change the font size of the window contents, but the setting does not affect the sidebar. How do I change the font size of the sidebar?

  • How can I change the find function so that it "IS" shared between tabs?

In the notes about what changed in Firefox 25 is this: "The find bar is no longer shared between tabs." I use the find function all day every day and absolutely need the find bar "to be shared" between tabs. How can I change the function back to how it worked before?
This new change in version 25 will cost me hours of search time everyday.

  • How do I restore missing Finder sidebar?

My Finder sidebar won't show Home, Desktop, Applications, All My Files -- even though they are checked in Finder Preferences.
I tried three suggestions I spotted in the forums, but didn't fix:
    1. Disk utility repairs
    2. Deleting 'com.apple.sidebarlists.plist'  (file not in Library)
    3. View - show sidebar.
    I have MBA, 1.6GHz, 4GB, v10.7.4
    Any suggestions?

    Hi Michael,
I had the same problem and solved it a very easy way. Infact I felt pretty silly. Haha hopefully this solves your problem too.
Close all finder windows so when you click the finder icon it opens a new finder window, one with no sidebar. Then go View>Show Toolbar
Then once the toolbar is enabled, the view/hide sidebar toggle becomes activated in that same menu.
Good Luck! Let me know if that fixed it.

  • How can I change my Bookmarks Sidebar to transparent - can't find the proper code for CSS file

I have recently changed my #nav-bar and #PersonalToolbar to transparent thanks to suggestions I found online. But I cannot seem to get my Bookmarks Toolbar to do the same. I tried #BookmarksSidebar with no luck. Any suggestions?

That's great, matthungo, I'm glad it worked and you've got your Bookmarks back. Wishing you and yours a wonderful and blessed Holiday season as well!

  • How to indefinitely hide the Finder Sidebar?

Hiding the sidebar for any given item or folder doesn't seem to affect the way newly created folders or other folders in general are displayed.
I want to "disable" or "permanently" hide the sidebar with some master preference (i.e. reverting to classic-style finder). Does such a preference exist?

OK, I understand now how that works. New folders created in folders with that view also open in the same view, regardless of what you set it to.
However, new folders created right on the desktop always inherit the full finder view until I manually change it.
Does this hold true for anyone else? It's kind of annoying for me because I tend to work with folders on the desktop first, so the benefit of inheriting the root's folder view isn't as effective for me It appears the Desktop automatically imposes the full view on the folder. Will I have to hide the sidebar for every new folder I create on the Desktop?

  • Change Default Finder Column Width

Is it possible to change the default widths of the columns in Finder windows? I know that I can temporarily change it, and as long as I don't restart, all subsequent windows will open at this width. But is there a way to make the change the new system default?

    This may be it...
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20030329162110811
I didn't have theNlisv, and can't reboot to test right now.
If you do not have a Nlsv item, quit Property List Editor, go to the Finder and open a directory window, change View to "as List," select "Select View Options," click on "All windows," change one of the items shown, and close the View Options window. This will write to the Finder's com.apple.finder.plist file within a few seconds.

  • How do I change and set the width of the Address and Search box

Currently, the Address box crowds out the Search. I really don't need the Address box as much as I need the Search box. I recall a method of setting them using a routine in the Chrome folder but I sure can't find it. Can you help?
    Thank
    Ed

    Method 1:<br/>
Using the resizer on the interface. See - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/search-bar-easily-choose-your-search-engine#w_moving-or-removing-the-search-bar (''second bullet item; done without entering customize mode.'' By default, Location and Search bars will occupy all available space on the Navigation toolbar in a 2 to 1 ratio, respectively.)
    Method 2:<br/>
Add code to userChrome.css below the @namespace line.
    ''@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* only needed once */
    See - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Editing_configuration#How_to_edit_configuration_files<br/>
Adjust the width to your needs, no space before px
    *urlbar-container {max-width: 400px !important;}
    *search-container {max-width: 200px !important;}

  • Snow Leopard sidebar width in open/save dialog boxes

I think I found the answer to the infuriating non adjustable sidebar width in the open/save dialog box.
It requires finding the plist of every program you want to change (I know... annoying)
Close the application if open. Open the plist in Property List Editor (which is the default anyway so just double click) and delete any line which begins NSNavPanelExpanded...
Reopen the application and the sidebar now mirrors the settings in Finder (where the sidebar stays adjusted if you alt+click drag it).
I haven't restarted yet so don't know if it will stick but I don't see why it shouldn't, and I don't know if it will reflect further finder changes to the sidebar width.

In the case of Photoshop it looks like NSNavBrowserPreferedColumnContentWidth also needs to be deleted, or a new value entered.
So it might be different for different programs

  • Finder Sidebar without text, just icons?

How can I get the Finder Sidebar without text, just the icons?
(I want it as small as possible.) Thanks.

There is no way to have it display icons only, and there is no way to shrink it down beyond a certain point. You USED to be able to shrink it by dragging, until the text disappeared leaving the icons only, but that changed with Leopard. The screenshot you saw was undoubtedly of an earlier version of the OS. Furthermore, in Leopard if you turned it off you also turned off the toolbar. In Snow Leopard it is now possible to turn off the Sidebar, but keep the toolbar: either go to the View menu and select Hide Sidebar, or press the keyboard shortcut Command-Option-S. Clicking the lozenge in the upper right corner of a Finder window still turns off both the Sidebar and toolbar.

  • Dynamically changing the height and width of Stage

    Hi,
I would like to know how can I change the height and width of stage dynamically. I tried it with the following code:
                             Stage.height = 250;
                             Stage.width = 250;
during the run time. Initially the Stage is at a height and width of 370 and 450 respectively. Also when I tried to trace the height and width of Stage after resizing the stage width and height, its showing the old value of width and height. That means the width and height not chnaging. Anybody have any idea about this.

    Hi Ross,
I could understand something about the problem after making a research on this topic. We can't change the width and height of stage from actionscript itself, right? I will explain the way I am planning to do. I don't know whether its right or not. Anyway you just go through it. First the player need to be resized, according to the specified height and width. Then in the object tag, there are two fields named height and width. We should change these value according to the specified height and width of video controller, dynamically. Am I right? But I am confused with two properties of Stage such as: align and scaleMode. The code was actually developed my trainer. There, the scaleMode is set to "noScale" and no align property is used. My doubt is how should I set align and scaleMode properties of Stage. Hope you understood what I meant.
