How to play electric guitar through garageband

Hi,
Macbook Pro mid 2009 running OSX 10.10
GarageBand 10.0.3
I have seen on the internet that it is possible to connect my electric guitar to my Macbook Pro and then use the Amps and effects in GarageBand to produce different sounds and effects from my guitar.
I have tried with a couple of different cables (standard 1/4" with an adapter as well as a Rocksmith USB cable), but GarageBand is not producing any sound.
I have repeatedly checked my input and output Sound settings, the cables, making sure I have the cables plugged in properly, but still nothing.
I've been working on this for a week and I'm stumped!
Help appreciated.
Regards,
Jim P.

You are going to need a USB audio interface. There are so many good ones you can't go wrong with any of the newest big name interfaces. I personally like interfaces that are at least 2 in 2 out  with both a ¼" and a XLR input. This way you can record instrument or mic or both at the same time.

    yes this will work
    you can also get a splitter cable that goes in to your in/out port so you can have 2 (or more) separate ports

  • GB11 Learn to Play: Electric guitar too dirty, want clean

    Hi everyone,
    Is there a way to switch my electric guitar sound during Learn to Play from dirty to clean? For example, in basic lesson 7 (Major Barre Chords), the instructor's guitar is clean. However, my own instrument comes through horribly dirty/distorted. It's hard for me to audibly compare my recording to the instructor, and I think it's screwing up my score as well. I also suspect the effects processing might be adding a bit of lag, further hurting my score. (I couldn't be that bad, right? )
    Thanks in advance!

  • What do I need to play my guitar into garageband?

    Just got my macbook pro and I play guitar and I found out that this neat app garage band is on here, but I don't know what exactly do I need to connect it to the mac book. Is it best to use and audio interface and if so which one? and will any audio interface work with it?

    Connect the guitar to an audio interface and connect the audio interface to the MBP. The electric guitar signal is not suitable for connecting directly to the MBP's audio in.
    A fairly simple interface is this
    <http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FastTrack.html>
    It is just an example, I do not recommend any particular brand or model. The best one is the one that does what you need at the price you can afford.

  • I am trying to run my electric guitar in garageband 11 but there is no options to modify the inputs/outputs to built

    There is no option to modify the sound input/output to built-in input or built-in output.  I'm guessing the electric guitar is not being registered.  I am using a 1/8" mono -1/4" mono cable to go directly from the output jack on my electric to the headphone jack on a macbook pro.  How can I get this to work?

    When you use an external device for input, GB often automatically selects that same device for output. It's an ease-of-use feature for most external devices. If your device doesn't give you the option to output to speakers/headphones, you don't want GB to do that.
    Within GB, go to GB>Preferences, Select the Audio/Midi tab. In the Drop-down under output, choose "Built-in Output" and connect your external speakers/headphones to the Mac's headphone port (Alternately, you could use system preferences to direct your Mac's audio-output to your speakers and select "System Setting" in GB Prefs. The Mac's own speakers aren't going to be nearly as much fun as running it to your big speakers/headphones).
    Hope that makes sense...

  • How do you input guitar in GarageBand on iMac

    I've tried to input my guitar into GarageBand on my iMac, but have not been very successful. How can i do this?  I have iRig, and plug it into the back port, but that doesn't work.  I also have a USB Guitar Link that works with Amplitube 3 that is on the same iMac, but doesn't work with GarageBand.  I've tried changing the input choices under preferences, but no luck.  With the USB Guitar Link, the Audio Preferences menu gives me the choice of "USB Audio CODEC" and I choose that...but, that doesn't work either.  The ONLY thing that has worked is the "Built-In Microphone"...but that records everything in the room...and its of very low quality.  Any help is appreciated.

    the iMac has separate input and output jacks, it does not work like your laptop's jack

  • Now how to rcord electric guitar?

    My USB M-Audio Fast Track is plugged in, with driver installed. System settings have the M-Audio set for input and output. Guitar is plugged into it. Headphones are also in place. I see the clip monitor is working on the M-Audio, and I can hear the guitar in the headphones. I made a new track, and selected Electric Guitar, so I can use the built in amps and stomp boxes. Input source set to "Mono 1 (M-Audio)". The recording level slider cannot be moved from the zero position. The amp sims and stomps do not change the tone of the guitar when heard in the headphones (they have no effect) and I cannot record when I hit the Record button (nothing records onto the track).
    SUPPLIMENT: Mono 2 now allows guitar to be recorded. I do not understand, as both Monos say M-Audio.

    Sorry for the late response the discussion board seems to have been down for the better part of yesterday.
    Here's the part I don't really understand: There's "Guitar Track" and "Master Track" under the settings (circle with "i" button). If I go to Master Track-->Edit, I see both "Track Effects" and "Master Effects". My only options for Track Effects are echo and reverb. They cannot be changed for any other kind of effect. Below this I have Master Effects, which have four possibles, three of which are not changeable (visual EQ, compressor, and "ducker", whatever that is). The fourth slot can be changed. Interesting that when the Track Effects are switched on, they have NO effect! Master Effects when turned on, do work.
    So question 1 is what is the difference between a Track Effect and a Master Effect, and when should one be used over another.
    And question 2 is why can't most of these effects be changed to another effect (or can they and I'm just not seeing it)?
    Thanks-

  • Problems recording electric guitar in Garageband

    I'm fairly new to using Garageband. I have Garageband 09 on my Macbook Pro. I'm playing a Fender Telecaster and a Stratocaster and am going through an Edirol (USB) interface and using Guitar Rig 4 plugins for amp modeling.
    I'm running into a few problems that I don't understand how to solve and am hoping someone can offer some help or advice.
    First, when going through the Edirol, I notice that the Recording Level setting on the Track Info pane on the far right of the screen is not active. I'm assuming the Edirol interface is over-riding this. Is that normal when using an interface?
    I use the input level knob on the Edirol to control the volume when I record (because the Recording Level is not active) and I keep it fairly low (about level 3). When I record the track using a clean guitar sound I watch the meter on the track pane on the left side of the arrange window. I adjust the settings so it never goes into red, and I watch to make sure it doesn't.
    Then when I play back what I've recorded, it jumps into the red in a few spots.
    I'm baffled by that. Is there any explanation and fix for this?
    Also, the recording of the song (with drum loops and vocals on it) has some clicks or sounds like a scratchy phonograph needle. I thought it might be the sound breaking up from distortion, but they don't always correspond to when the meters hit the red zone.
    What are these sounds, why are they appearing and how can I avoid/get rid of them?
    Lastly, just about every amp setting using Guitar Rig 4 and Garageband's own amp models that have distortion (I use distortion on lead parts at times) have a terrible level of hiss and noise.
    I've tried using the noise gate to get rid of it, but, while it silences the hiss and noise when you're not actually playing anything, the hiss is still very present when you are.
    Also, if the noise gate is set too high, it kills any sustain. And the hiss is still there anyway when playing, although it's a bit less.
    Is there some explanation for this, and any solutions? How can I get rid of this noise/hiss and still have a great sounding lead with sustain?
    Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer any help.

    Yes, that's how it works!
    When I record the track using a clean guitar sound I watch the meter on the track pane on the left side of the arrange window. I adjust the settings so it never goes into red, and I watch to make sure it doesn't.
    It's perfectly fine for the recording level to go into the read, actually that's what you want. Just make sure it never clips (the two little dots at the end of the meter scale lighting up).
    Then when I play back what I've recorded, it jumps into the red in a few spots.
    I'm baffled by that. Is there any explanation and fix for this?
    Recording level and playback level are two different things. The latter depends on how you set your track's volume. Turn it down if it clips (again, red is fine.)
    Maybe other people can comment on your distortion problems!

  • How to play wav files with Garageband/Midi keyboard

    Hello,
    I'm using Garagband (on my MAC, not iPad) and a midi keyboard for making songs. I just got a couple of cd's from Miroslav Philharmonik, but the sounds are all in standalone WAV files. There is no installation required. How can i use these sounds with Garageband? Must i copy/paste them in a specified directory on the HD? Or is a sample library necessary? I tried drag and drop, but that dind't work out...
    Thanx in advance for your help.

    this should help:
    import com.ms.win32.*;
    public void play()
              try
              URL url = new URL("file","C:\\","Hallo.wav");
              String wav= new String(url.getHost()+url.getFile());
              Winmm.PlaySound(wav,1,1);
              catch(MalformedURLException e)
    or something like this ;))

  • Connecting Electric Guitar to Garageband on G5 iMac

    I've seen other discussions about this, but cannot figure out this seemingly simple process.
    -I connected the guitar via 1/4 to 1/8 cables into the "line in" port on the back of the iMac.
    -I chose "real instrument" when adding a new track in garageband
    -I made sure that the sound input preferences under system preferences correctly states "line in" (and not internal audio/speakers).
    -I have the drop down menu set to "Monitor On" and the Sound menu to "Stereo"
    (even when I mess with these settings nothing gets recorded).
    When I hit record nothing comes through the computer - nothing gets recorded.
    Do I need the Griffin iMac or similar device?
    Any suggestions?

    it depends which iMac you're using:
