How to play HD in low quality

Hello.
I have Sanyo’s latest Xacti gizmo VPC-FH1, which shoots “Full” HD at 1920x1080. The MP4 clips are obviously huge, at some 3MB per second. I can play the clips fairly well with QuickTime, but it’s a different story in Final Cut 6.
Whether in viewer or in canvass (with audio tracks deleted for good measure) it plays for two seconds and then freezes and just skips to a frame a few seconds ahead every few seconds. Downsizing even down to 12% makes no difference, and even if it did, it’d be way to small to be any good for editing.
I remember having similar issues with 1080p back with the HVX200, but I think I managed to downgrade the playback/render quality to a point where it played smoothly.
I’ve messed with different settings now, to no avail.
There’s user preferences, systems settings, timeline setting, RT, etc, etc...
What can I do for the clips to play smoothly?
I have a 2Ghz Core Duo 15” MBP with 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
For future reference, is there a MacBook that could play these clips smoothly without sacrificing quality?
Thank you much,
MaW

What a bummer.
Now I'm stuck with a just-about useless camera. I really need something as small as the FH1 (it's TINY).
Hard-drive camcorders record MPG2, which I assume makes them just as useless.
Is then MiniDV the only choice for a sub-$500 1080i/p camera that will allow me to edit footage without converting?
If so, any tips on the smallest one out there?
Google came up with Sony's DCR-PC55, but it's four years old and only does SD...
Do you want good OR do you want cheap? That is the decision you need to make. Also, tiny tends to be the opposite of good.
P.S. AIC converted it best; ProRes(Lo/HQ) left it pixelated for playback. But it takes about an hour a minute, and increases the file-size tenfold, so it's no good anyway.
Yes, your actual editable video file is going to be 10x bigger than a MPEG-4 file. That is what you want.
P.S. 2 "....FCP is converting your video behind the scenes which is causing all your problems."
If that's the case, then my oldish MacBook Pro (2GHz Duo, 2GB RAM) has enough juice to play the 640x480 MPG4 clips smoothly, but not the HD ones. Could the latest MacBook (2.5/6/8GHz, 8GB RAM) could play the 1080p30 clips smoothly?
No, you still have the same problem. MPEG-4 files are non-editable. You really need to convert to an editable format and then bring that into FCP. MPEG Streamclip is going to be your best choice.

  • My iphone still plays songs with lower quality instead of 256kbps

I enabled iTunes match on my iPad and iPhone 4S. However, it already
has my songs already synced on them and when I play songs it plays at
lower quality than at 256kbps as claimed by Apple.
One option is to delete all the songs on the iPad and iPhone. But that
will require me to delete every song individually. How do I solve this
    problem?

When you turn on iTunes match on your iOS device it should warn you that it is going to delete your songs.  You will then need to redownload the ones you want to listen to from the cloud.

  • How can I replace one low quality source with another high quality one ?

Am I really this dumb or is it really this hard ?
I have one timeline / project / edit that essentially references one long source clip / event / file.
I have a newer higher quality transcoded version of the same source and want to replace the original lower quality version and end up with the same edited result just with better quality images !?
It's the same frame rate and image dimensions  but "relink" tells me the new file is not "similar" enough and won't do it !
Why is this so hard ? Is there a way to export a good old fashioned edl and then just reconform using the new source ?
What if I wanted to to replace low res offline footage with finished colour-corrected material and output a finished master - would that be this clueless as well ?
Please let me know the problem is between the chair and the keyboard - not between the hard disk and the power cord !

Guessing that when you created the higher quality media, it was done outside of FCP and probably changed some important metadata that the app is looking for. Or perhaps there is a difference between the original audio and the new audio.
Anyway, Luis' advice about the replace edit seems like the easiest solution.

The usual way to do offline online is within FCP – creating the proxies and then using Preferences to switch back to and from.
If you sent it out for grading, the Relink should work fine. If you haven't seen this kb doc, it's worth reviewing.

  • How to republish stream with lower quality

Hey guys, I was wondering is there a way that I can receive stream on my broadcast server and then republish that stream with lower quality on the same broadcast server. I was reading server side API reference but I couldnt find anything like that.
Only thing I found is to use %i in FMLE Stream field and then broadcast same stream with different bitrates, but can I take live stream that is being broadcasted and republish it with lower quality/bitrate on the server side somehow?
Or there is another way to achieve this?
I am running FMS 4.5 and I am using FMLE to broadcast video to the server.
    Thank you for your answers.

FMS can't transcode streams. What you could do is use FFMPEG to pull the stream from FMS and publish a transcoded stream back into FMS.
Alternately, you could use Wowza Media Server and their transcoder plugin (fairly easy), or Wowza and Xuggler (requires a fair amount of programming)

  • How can i choose a lower quality print density when printing from firefox on my Mac. I cant move the slider along the scale ( I can when printing from the computer).

I can't change the print density when printing from Firefox. It is set at standard and although there is a "slider button" to use for choosing less or more density, it can't be moved. I can tick "grayscale". I can choose the density when printing from the computer. I have a Mac

I also have this problem where I used to be able to shrink a 2 page doc to a single page. Since upgrade to FF4 it no longer works - but you can choose say 60% and it will work. All used to work fine in FF3

  • How to suggest flash objects they should play at low quality.

You will need to use mozilla firefox and the greasemonkey plugin and then the script found at or near:http://userscripts.org/topics/1792  http://userscripts.org/topics/1792 . using this setup you can force most flash pages to low quality.
Take note adobe, if you keep enforcing your ideas and ideals on me i will disable the flash interpreter for all but the pages that require it to be able to read them.
i'm tired of ads on web pages using 95% of my cpu (yeah thats right bigpond i'm watching you). for a start you havn't asked my permission to use my cpu and you aren't paying the electricty bill or my bandwith bill which you would need to do to be able to legally force this.
Also do not moderate or change my post as this will only increase my distaste with your company.
I should also note that this doesn't stop developer from inserting code in thier flash content that a. sets the flash quality to high and b. removes the quality menu from the client.
I have seen this done for a competition from a company in australia.
As soon as this activity becomes widespread the plugin will be disabled as i stated above. And i will request a non flash content version from that website as they may not force me to use flash and i believe there may be legal repurcussions to any entity that tries to force thier customers to use flash.
Anyone having the same problem and feeling the same way about flash please feel free to post below.

It is not Flash Player that inserts ads onto websites, but the site owners.  If you don't like these ads, don't visit their websites.

  • How to edit and make a high quality swf a low quality one

How to edit and make a high quality swf a low quality one. how do you do this in adobe flash cs5? The file i edited is entirely too large

click file/publish settings/html and use the quality settings dropdown.
if that doesn't lead to satisfactory file size, you may need to check the properties of each bitmap in the library to see if it's set to over-ride the global settings.

I uploaded a video from a flashdrive to my Mac and it compressed the video to lower quality and shrunk it in size. How do I get it to the original size?

It changed the Aspect ratio of the video, as if it had been shot on a phone instead of a camera. When first looking at the footage it was in landscape aspect but when I transfered it to a memory unit to put on a different computer it uploaded it in a different ratio

  • How to fix low quality icons in dock?

I know it's been around for a while but I still didn't find any solution. My problem is that any new icons that appears in my dock are low quality only. Even if it's native Apple app like Pages...
Any solution how to permanently fix this issue?

I have a similar (or worse) problem.
Many of my icons appear in very low quality. This affects customised folder or hard disk icons, but also applications. Both in the Finder and in the dock.
Even the just updated iWorks icons appear as if a tiny size image has been blowen up.
Funnily, they did appear just fine before installing the update.
It looks like everything that was on my boot disk when upgrading to ML looks still fine, but everything copied afterwards, or mounted afterwards gets these low resolution icons.

  • DVD Playing Low Quality?

Ok, so I watch DVDs on my laptop.
I am also one who hates to watch videos in HD/High Quality.
(Especially if the information states the video is High Quality)
Correct me if I am wrong but the information specifies that this DVD is 720 by 576.
This is definetely not the case when playing the DVD on DVD Player and VLC Player.
Is it the disc drive, or the fact that the DVDs dont allow high quality to be played on a Mac.
I also played it on a windows desktop computer and this also played in low quality, so.
I know this is probably not a problem with the disc drive or operating system or software used to play the disc or the disc itself (I tried other discs too).
    But does anyone know if you can play a 720 x 576 DVD in 720 x 576 ?

Just read over the message, I meant
"I am also on who hates to NOT watch videos in HD"

  • How to work with low quality offline media efficiently?

I have a late 2013 rMBP with an NVIDA GPU that is a fantastic platform for editing when I am travelling. The downside is that it doesn't have allot of storage and when I have high bit rate material it can struggle. I often shoot DNxHD 220 on an Atomos Ninja 2 and for a recent project I used AME to convert all of this to DNxHD 36. I then kept the original files on my NAS and copied the low quality files to my laptop to edit while travelling. This worked really nicely, but when it comes to rendering out the finished project it can be laborious to switch the media files. I have numerous clips and I had to go to each one and follow these steps: Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Create clips for offline editing
Is there a way of replacing all clips in a bin rather than doing it one by one? This time I had 30 clips which was annoying but not the end of the world. For future projects this could be many more clips and currently the process documented in the Premier help is going to be time consuming and annoying. Does anyone have any tips or are there new features in the latest CC updates which allow this type of functionality to be done in bulk?

shooternz uses a LOT of digital intermediate workflow ... he might have ideas on this, hope he chimes in ...

  • How to get lower-quality previews when working with Full-HD?

I'm working with Full-HD video, but I don't need preview (rendered) files to be 1920x1080 too. It takes a lot of disk space and a lot of time to render preview files.
Is there a way to have them some lower quality? For example 720x405 resolution would be enough.
But when I want to make a final export, I need to get Full-HD video.
    Thanks!

Use a Custom sequence and change the previews as desired.
