How to play music cd in Rhythmbox? (or anything else)

The situation is this: I can play music in Ryhthmbox that is on my hard disk (copied over from other distro) and am listening to jazz as I write this), but I can not put a CD into my dvd drive and play a music CD. I would like to rip it to disk using Rhythmbox as I have done in the past but it seems impossible in Arch. I am using Xfce4.
If I insert a music CD just now, Totem starts up and then tells me that there is no media in drive for device '/dev/sr0'. Well, how did it know I inserted a CD in the drive for crying out loud?
Any ideas out there?

Start Rhythmbox and double-click the audio CD item in the Devices list???

iPhone 4 can AirPlay audio just fine, I'd forgotten that it can't do screen mirroring. It's been so long since I had my iPhone 4 but I'm certain that some apps will allow video output over AirPlay (which is not the same as screen mirroring). The stock iOS Photo and Video apps could stream pictures and video to ATV, but true mirroring of everything you see on the screen is not supported on iPhone 4. How to play music through my external hard drive through iTunes on my mac?

I recently purchased a external hard drive for my mac for my movies and music, as my disc was almost full.
I have spent HOURS searching how to play music through my itunes without transferring them onto the mac.
BUT everytime I click media destination folder in prefrences and advance, the whole music library in my external hard drive folder is greyed out, and when i click it nothing happens.
PLEASE someone help...

First, a brand new drive is likely formatted for use with Windows. You need to reformat it for use with Mac.

Second, you are better off moving the whole iTunes library to the external drive, not just the media.

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.
Do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in

How to play music from iPod through Windows Media Player

I don't want to insult anyone's intelligence .... but just in case anyone hasn't yet figured it out, here's how to play music from your iPod on a computer that does not have iTunes installed:
On your computer, connect the iPod to iTunes and click on it's name. Then under the general tab, check "allow disk use". Your iPod will then act as a USB hard drive and will then show up as a drive in My Computer. Now all you need to do is to create a Music folder on it and then copy all your music to it!
Your iPod's USB hard drive should show up under My Computer on most Windows computers. Therefore providing the computer has Windows Media Player installed, you will be able to play all your music on it! This saves you having to bother with portable/travel speakers, some of which sound terrible anyway!

Hi and thanks for sharing. Trying to figure out how to play sound files such as wavs or mp3s on my ipad2 while I browse the internet or use my computer. I was trying to see if the music feature will play my songs or if I can import downloaded files from the net to itunes and if that will play in the background. I have an audio program that can send sound files to email and was trying to figure out how, similarly, to get this play in the background while I do things too. The only way to get content into the Music app is via iTunes store downloads or syncing with itunes on a computer. You will need to find a third party media player such as VLC (whick integrates with DropBox and GoogleDrive, if that appeals to you).

The value of the Channel Strip volume etc is not stored within the C Strip setting, as you have discovered.
If you really wanted, you could add a Gain plug to the strip, with it set to give the correct output level with the Fader set to 0

I wanted to give a big thanks to all that gave me great and very needed help. I wanted to let everyone know that. I did fix my problom with get music out of my computer and into my stereo. Here is how I did it. If you already have a stereo with a RCA line in you are good to go. All you need is a hifi-link I got one from circuit city. With it you can take the music from your computer be PC or Mac and play it though your stereo but again your stereo must have a audio in for you to get music to come though your stereo or at least it was the only way I could get it to work for me. Oh and you will need a free USB port on your computer for the hifi-link to hook to see it dose not us your computers audio card. Instead it go's though your USB. It work just great. But you should read on the back of the box or when you are looking for iy on the net make shour it will work with your computer some older systems it will not work with.
I have been needing a new stereo for sometime now. I really like shelf stereo systems. So I got me a Sony MHC-GX570XM. Now it sells for $249.95. Now I did a search for this system and the only plays I could find that sells it was Sony. Now here is the kicker I went to Sams with my Dad. We had stoped to look a the flat screen TVs. As we were walking away from the electronics. I saw it as plain has day there it was in all it glory. Now the crazy thing is this system was not on there web site though it could be now. But when I was looking for this cool system they did not have it on there web site. I got this system for get this $199 thats like I think $50 off the asking price. Now I would have been more then happy to pay the $249.95. I liked to have had a fit right there in the store LOL. I thought I was going to have to order it online. If I had did that I would had haved to pay even more with s/h...
Now two of the big reasons I got this system was for the PC/line in or you can hook up a MP3 player and play it though the system very cool. Sec reason It has to cassettes decks 1 plays and the other recordes. The really cool thing is it is XM radio ready. Though you will need a XM membership and a XM antina. But from what I have read thats all you need. It also has a 3 CD changer that swivals. It has so many cool thing I can not name them all. Now this system my not be for everyone. But it dose all that I need and more. Also it really helps to have a hifi-link so you can hook it to your computer the easy way and not have to go though your sound card. I have an extensive collection of fine music on CDs and DVD. How do I play music on my iMac 27" with Mavericks without having to buy more unneeded discs from iTunes? Find nothing in Apple "help" not my book on Mavericks. Apple doesn't have as much interest in selling fine computing equipment as it does selling goods from the iTunes store.

Not true, personally I have never purchased any music from the iTunes Store and have over a 160GB of music from my CD collection in iTunes.

You can easily Import your CD collection into iTunes.
If you have a newer iMac that does not have a built-in Superdrive, you can use most any USB External Optical DVD Drive to Import your CDs into iTunes.

I'd like to play music off of my external hard drive without itunes adding it to it's library. I unchecked the box that says create a copy in itunes, however i created a playlist, dragged the files to it and played them. When i deleted the playlist, the songs were still listed in my main library, they wont play....b/c the files not there, so why is even listed and how do i prevent that from happening in the future?????

Make sure you have iOS 4.2.1.
Launch the iPod app on the iPad, start playing what you wnat, press Home then open Safari and surf away.
To get back to the iPod, either double tap Home, swipe right and you can FF/RW a song and change volume or tap the iPod icon to open the iPod app.
Not all apps will play in the background.
Youtube won't.
iPod and Pandora will.
