How to play other non-mainstram video formats

merry xmas guys!
former MS user, now in Mac, with quicktime, how can I play other video formats like - .rm, .asf, .wmv etc..
or any other software recommend to cover all of them?
cheers,
Jake

Merry Xmas to you too!
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear/play pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
Download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
RealPlayer 11.1 for Mac from:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15540
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
The latest version of Adobe FlashPlayer can be obtained from here:
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.
NOTE: On December 8, 2009 Adobe announced plans to drop Flash Player security support next year for Mac owners whose machines run PowerPC processors.
"Adobe will be discontinuing support of PowerPC-based G3 computers and will no longer provide security updates after the Flash Player 10.1 release," said Adobe in the same advisory that spelled out the seven patches. "This unavailability is due to performance enhancements that cannot be supported on the older PowerPC architecture."
After Flash Player 10.1, which is slated to ship in the first half of 2010, Adobe's newest software will run only on Intel-based Macs.
http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/index.cfm?email&NewsID=28011
You should also consider the Shockwave Player, which displays Web content that has been created by Adobe Director, much used for multimedia: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/513
You should also ensure that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2009-001 (and for Tiger only, 2009-002 and 003). (N.B. Security Updates require both a restart and a permission repair.)
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
There is an additional 'fix' you could try if you are having problems with Flash and Quicktime, depending on which type of Mac you have:
On Intel Macs, make sure that you are not running Safari in Rosetta. You can check this, and change it, in the Get Info window.
On PPC Macs, go to the Hard Disk/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, and drag the file 'QuickTime Plugin.webplugin' to the desktop. Quit and restart Safari. If things have improved you can trash that file. If they haven't put it back, as the lack of this plug-in can cause QT content in some widgets to cease functioning.
And there is an additional kid on the block: SilverLight. Microsoft has created their own version of what a replacement for Flash could be. You can read more about it here:
http://silverlight.net/
So, if you go to any sites that have been designed for this new Silverlight stuff, you can download the plug-in from here (but make certain that you are downloading SilverLight v.1.0 for OS X (10.4.8 upwards) if you are using a PPC Mac, but even this will not work with Safari 4. Version 2 only works with Intel Macs and does work with Safari 4:
http://silverlight.net/GetStarted/
Recommendation: Close all applications before installing any of the above, repair permissions, reboot, and repair permissions again.

  • Satellite U300 connected to TV - Non supported video format

I am using Toshiba Satellite U300-15q and it has a vga output so i bought a cable and a box that transfers te analogue signal of vga to digital of hdmi so that i can connect it to my 32' TV Sony make.
But if i connect it it says on the tv in yellow letters non supported video format.
Why is that and how can i fix it ?

In the whole story problem is that you use third part hardware or software so this described issue has nothing to do with your Toshiba notebook or Toshiba in general.
On notebooks side is important that video signal is sent on proper way. What happen later and why this signal is not transformed correctly is matter of this box.
    Which box do you use?
In my opinion you should contact manufacturer of this box and their support. They should know how it works and how to fix this.
Generally speaking, Toshiba has nothing to do with this problem.

  • How do you imort a .vob video format into I photo or I movie?

How do you imort a .vob video format into I photo or I movie? I tsays it is not a readable format. can that be changed?

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • How to play DVD movie and video on Blackberry

This guide is mainly about how to rip DVD and convert video to BlackBerry Storm. First, you should know what video format is BlackBerry Storm supports.
Because DVD has CSS copyright protection, we need a program to rip DVD and convert video for BlackBerry Storm. The tool we use is BlackBerry Converter Suite, it includes two programs: DVD to BlackBerry Storm Converter and BlackBerry Storm Video Converter. This program not only supports BlackBerry Storm, but also BlackBerry Curve, BlackBerry Pearl and BlackBerry Bold series.
It supports audio and video format as follow:
Video: DVD, ISO, AVI, MPEG, MKV, MP4, MP4-AVC, M4V, WMV, MOV, 3GP, 3G2, MPG, FLV, ASF, VOB
    Audio: WMA, M4A, MP3, AAC, AC3, WMA
For more info about this BlackBerry Converter Suite, you can refer to here.
And here is the free download link, about 12.4 MB.
Now, let’s start the guide about converting DVD and Video to BlackBerry Storm.
Step1, Download and install the BlackBerry Storm converter, and then run it.
Step2. Load DVD into the software by clicking “Add DVD file”.
Here we can load three kinds of DVD's:
    1. Real DVD, just put the DVD in your DVD drive and click load DVD, (you can find it by clicking the triangle on the right of 'load file' button.)
    2. DVD ISO image, you can amount your ISO files in the daemon tools and then load the virtual DVD drive.
    3. A DVD folder, sometimes you may store the DVD folder in your hard drive, it appears like "Video_TS" "Audio_TS" folders. You can load it by clicking the "load DVD folders" button.
Step3. Select Profile, Subtitle, Audio, output directory setting
After you load DVD into the software, click the Profile drop-down list to select the proper format according to your BlackBerry Type, this guide is mainly about how to convert DVD and video to BlackBerry Storm, so we select the “BlackBerry Storm series(*.mp4)” profile.
Regular DVD movies usually have several subtitles such as English, French, German, etc. You can select one you prefer. You can also delete the subtitle by selecting “No Subtitle”. Selecting Audio is the same. If you want to join all your DVD files into one video file, please select the option named “Merge into one file”. For more advanced setting, you can open the setting panel by clicking “Setting”.
    Step4. Start the conversion
After all things done, you can click the “Start” to begin the conversion; it will take about 30 minutes for converting a regular two hours DVD movie. When the conversion finished, click “find target” to located the converted video on your computer, connect your BlackBerry Storm to computer, and then copy the video to your BlackBerry memory card, that’s all. Then you can enjoy your favorites DVD movies on your BlackBerry Storm.
For converting video to BlackBerry Storm, you can click “Video to BlackBerry” to run the BlackBerry Movie Converter, the operation steps are similar to DVD to BlackBerry Converter, So I’m not repeat here. But I want to add some tips to the BlackBerry Movie Converter.
    1. The Video to BlackBerry Converter supports batch conversion, so you can add multiple video files at one time.
    2. The Video to BlackBerry Converter embeds powerful video editing functions, you can use it to cut video, trim video, crop video, and you can even add a watermark to the video.
    3. The Video to BlackBerry Converter can also help you convert video file to MP3, WMA, AAC, etc audio, so you can set it as your BlackBerry ringtone.

STOP.....WHAT DOES "HOW TO CONVERT DVD MOVIE AND SET THEM ON THE IPOD" HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THIS DISCUSSION FORUM?
    This is very simple:
THe 5G IPOD is designed to seamsleslly play video acquired from the ITUNES music store. What does that mean? It means that if you get the video from the Itunes music store it should work, and if it does not work, you then post the relevant question in the ITUNES discussion forum.
If you want to rip DVD's, by all means, search in websites like www.videohelp.com, or search in google. If you do not find the answer there, then search here.
This particular question has been ASKED countless times and the last time I checked the forum was called Using Your 5th Generation IPOD", not "How do I get XYZ type video to play on the IPOD" nor "How do I use ABC program to rip, convert, a DVD"?
Have you checked first the video specs of the video ipod? What formats, codecs, etc? before posting your question here?
Don't get me wrong, we are here to help, but it is a little bit irritating to see newcomers post questions without having searched for the answers first, specially on a topic that has been addressed so many times as this one

  • Make iTunes 6 accept non-native video formats

I found this tip for adding about any video format that QuickTime Player can play to the iTunes library.
While iTunes 6 might not be the best option as a video media player, you might still want it as a video cataloguing tool for all your movies as long as you can open them with QuickTime Player. You can add many types of files simply by dragging them to iTunes' icon or Library (MOV, MP4, DV, etc.). But if you want to add other file types, such as AVI movies (considering you have appropriate codecs installed), you'll have to resort to a trick and have QuickTime Pro with you (and no, it has nothing to do with reencoding). Read more...
<small>To admins: Can we move this to the FAQ area?</small>

it makes .mov files only readable by people who have QuickTime and the Divx Codec (quite nobody).
I don't think you understood the tip, Romain. It is intended for those who already have the DivX (and other codecs) installed (it's not "quite nobody"; there are many people out there who wish to access media in formats other than those supported natively by QuickTime). Hence the name of the tip.
This method is not meant for people who do not wish to take advantage of it.
The .mov files created with the help of this tip are reference movies. In other words, they do not contain the media themselves. The method is much like adding songs to the library without copying the files. Naturally, the .xml library file that iTunes creates will also be readable only by people who have your songs in the exact same locations (quite nobody, indeed).
I apologize if this tip was of no use to you. Just skip it then. ;)))

  • Is it possible to embedd other Non YouTube videos on iWeb sites?

You know how there's a YouTube Widget that lets you easily embed YouTube videos on iWeb sites? I imagine this Widget doesn't work for none YouTube videos (e.g. MetCafe), so how do we embed those on our web site pages?

Use an HTML Snippet and an iFrame code.....
    http://web.me.com/roddymckay/Web-Media-Test/Night-City.html
There are two versions of the same movie on this test page. One uses the Vimeo code and the other uses an iFrame code with the URL to the Video.

  • How to play the pdf embedded video on firefox

I embed video into pdf quite often, if I want everyone with Acrobat reader version earlier than 9 (6,7,8) can open it, I have to chose "Create legacy multimedia content..." when I embed the video. The problem is, when I make the pdf with Mac, usually I use mp4 video, but a lot of PC's can not open it because they don't have the codec (they have to install it first); but if I embed it with wmv, Mac users can not open it. Also the latest Firefox browser doesn't have the plug-ins for the new pdf, thus can not play the embedded video. Anyone can help? Many thanks...

    bayu_the_editor wrote:
    Hi Philips,
Thanks for your input, but that's not the problem. I've got Flip4Mac  already installed, and I have quicktime pro, so no problem for my intel  based Mac running WMV under quicktime.
The problem is, I can not play the PDF embedded video WITHIN FIREFOX /  SAFARI browser. Just found out that they only have plug-ins for viewing  pdf files, not with embedded video.
    Thanks anyway.
Adobe has not had a PDFPlugin for Mozilla Products Since OS 9. I have put in a bug about it at least once every year.
There is a PDF Browser Plugin by Shubert of Germany, that will view PDF's. Now Safari will work with the Acrobat PDFViewer Plugin and any other Browsers using Webkit including iCab. You can set SeaMonkey FireFox, Camino,  to use the Adobe Reader or even Acrobat rather than a plugin.
It's sad and funny at the same time. Adobe until Acrobat came out was just a Font provider. And Adobe got started with other products on the Mac, because mac users were a little more bold and daring and would try out new technology. Acrobat on PC (Widows/DOS) wasn't accepted for another two years. Then when then got a foot in the door in the Windows world, they all but abandoned the Mac Platform.
They refuse to fix crash and performance issues on Mac for Flash. One reason why Jobs has took the stance he has about Flash on the iPad/iPhone.
But they are not the only ones. Intuit (Quicken) got started on Mac first. Then when they got toe hold in PC world they have been shafting Mac Users every since.

    Mr_Dunce,
You're going to need software that can convert the songs to an iPod-playable video format..
You can follow these steps if you have or would like to buy Quicktime Pro to convert the videos.
Or you can try something like Videora:

  • How to achieve good non-interlaced video using compressor (newbie question)

    Dear all,
I am completely at sea but I know that I have to use the "none" setting for the field order and cannot for the life of me work this out.
Now- I usually export direct from Final Cut Pro (H.264, best quality etc etc) but this time the exported QT file just will not de-interlace (not my footage but I have to deliver the edit), come **** or high water.
So- a kind soul said to use Compressor... And to not use any field ordering.
But HOW? I watched videos, sought to use the instructions given me here but am still totally lost.
    What I did:
    1. Launched Compressor,
    2. Dragged in the self-contained reference QT file from my desktop,
    3. Picked a setting (H.264 which has field reordering ON by default),
    4. Dropped the "setting" into the blue field to right of clip thumb,
    5. Double-clicked the "setting" and then-
    6. picked the "Encoder" button, as instructed but cannot change the Field Order.
Because Compressor is completely new to me I don't know if I ought to NOT pick a setting until I have it how I want it, saved it as a "custom setting" and THEN bring it into the project or if I am to do it once brought in to the project. Either way- how to change the field order to "none". Or should I pick a de-interlace filter? Just that I have been looking and testing and nothing I do creates a de-interlaced final file.
All the tutorial videos I have watched (erm- about 5 now) go over exporting and how to pick your settings from those which exist but what I need to know is how to change a setting to suit (ie get rid of the evil interlacing).
I am hoping someone here can give me a very simple step by step or point me in the direction of one.

Let me see if I can wrap my head around what you're trying to do. You started with an HD timeline 1280 x 720 (16:9). Into this you want to add your SD PAL clips, shrunk down for a picture in picture effect (a completely different concept from multicam.) But your shrunk down clips have nasty interlacing, and the one clip which was meant to be full frame looks like rubbish, right? Sorry but there's no way to blow a clip up 180% and have it look even halfway decent. At least not in FCP. Compressor has an upscale algorithm, available in the same Frame Controls tab where you did the de-interlacing, which can give you somewhat better results. There's also a plug-in from Red Giant called Instant HD which may or may not yield better results than Compressor.
Here's where you went wrong. The clips to be shrunk should have been deinterlaced before bringing them into FCP, and into your sequence. Go ahead and do this, using the ProRes 422 setting, with the deinterlacing technique from before.
Your sequence in FCP is fine, except that you want to change its compressor to ProRes 422 so that it matches your newly imported de-interlaced clips.
You want to de-interlace your P2 1080i clips beforehand as well. The other change to make to your sequence is to change Field Dominance to None.
If you've already finished your edit, you can still do all of the de-interlacing, outputting all of the results to a new folder. But you have to do every source clip in its entirety if you want to re-link to retain your edit.
When Compressor's done - this will probably take all night - open your FCP project, select all the source clips, right-click and choose Reconnect Media. Locate the newly de-interlaced ProRes clips and Connect.
Then you only need to export your sequence as a Quicktime Movie, Current Settings, Self-contained. This will give you a pristine master which will play fine on your computer, and from which you may then use Compressor to create a web or dvd version as needed.

  • How to play MP4 files in Video Display compoenent?

    Hello,
I am facing probelm with playing MP4 H.264 format 16/9 format in VideoDisplay compoenent on mobile devices.
I had tried with VideoDisplay and MP4 files from local storage as well as server located mp4 but

  • How to play sound from a proprietary format

I would like to convert a small java applet to flex as3
The current applet connects  to a remote server to receive audio in a proprietry compressed and encrypted format using a tcp connection (the data is encoded as text)
It then decrypts, decompresses the audio and uses java sound to play it.
Looking at the as3 classes all I could find is a sound object that seems to only play mp3 audio and a urlrequest object that is used to download (what about streaming) mp3 audio from a server.
I am looking for a simple sample that will incorporate retreving data from a server (perhaps using the http service) into e.g. a byte array, and playing pcm audio from a byte array.
Ideally it would be a small set of files (1?) that I can compile using mxmlc; I am not good with IDEs, linux command line is my thing

  • How to play few times a video

Hi everyone, i`d like to put a video for i play how many times it necessary by clicking at apple remote control... I do no how many times i will play in my presentantion, maybe i need 2, 3, 4, i do no, so, i`d like to put anything for i play the video with remote control, and after this, i push other button (i do no) in my remote control and the presentation will go for next slide. Is it possible. I do no if i say what i`d like to say, but i tried. Thanks a lot. Sorry for my english. I`m learning.

The easiest way is to have a slide with only that video. Then its easy. Set video to start on click. Make sure the transition between slides is set on click also. When the video is finished, you can press "right key" for next slide or "left key" to jump to the beginning of the video, and then pres "right key" to play video again. I didn't try this with Apple remote but it works with other remote contoler (like Kensington Wireless Presenter http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-33374-Wireless-Presenter-Pointer/dp/B000FPGP4U/ ref=dpcp_ob_e_image0) and it should work with Apple Remote too.

  • How to play other audio files in Podcasts app?

Hi all. Whenever I add audiobooks or recordings of radio shows to my iPhone, they go into the Music app. However, this doesn't have a placeholder function (that is, it doesn't remember at which you point you paused the file) or a sleep timer like the Podcasts app does. I find this really annoying, especially the lack of placeholder. Is there any way to get these things to play from Podcasts instead? I've searched on this but can't find any other questions about it. Surely other people find this irritating as well? Hoping there is some solution, maybe using a third party app?

Close Windows Media Player. Make sure you know where the song files are on your hard drive. Use the iTunes command File > Add File (or Folder) to Library.
If they are MP3s they will add directly to your iTunes library. If they are non-protected WMA files, they will be automatically converted and added. If they are something else, "measures" must be taken...
Let is know how this works!

  • How to play mixture of photos + video clips?

Most of my iPhoto events include a mixture of both still photos + video clips (taken on the same digicam).
I'd like to play these back as just such a mixture i.e. part slide-show + interspersed quicktime movie clips (whether in an album, slideshow, event, or something else).
What are some ways I can do this? Simple preferred to hi-featured
    Thanks!

    how do they handle this?
They use an app like iMovie or PhotoPresenter.
Isn't iMovie primarily a video editing program?
    Yes.
a bit too much work for just easily and seamlessly viewing pictures + video clips?
You won't know till you try, will you?
    Regards
    TD
