How to position chapter number on the master page according to the chapter number?

I'm working with a catalog for a customer with about 250 pages divided into apx 30 chapters. The person who made this document in the first place have a separate master page for each Chapter.
If I use the the Running Header (Paragraph style) text variable I can use the same master page on all chapters - this will be much easier I think.
BUT I have a problem because the chapter number is going to be displayed in different position according to the number (along on the edge of the page with white text in a black rectangle, with the first chapter number on top, the next one beneath and so on - so the reader of the book can see the chapters just by looking at the edge of the book without opening it)
Is there any possibility to have the Chapter Number text variable to be displayed in different location on the page based on the number it self? Or do you have any other ways to solve this in a easy way?

Well, you can not create dependencies like this, but you could use nested master pages. You would still need 30 master pages for 30 chapters, in order to place the chapter number in different positions, but you
would only need one or two main master pages for the rest of master page content. That would make it at least easier to change something on all master pages at once.

I have created a navigation system on the master pages and set the presentation to links only mode. I also have other links scattered throughout the program, like a linkable table of contents, etc. Some of them work, some of them don't. Not sure why. Anyone out there having similar issues? Or have any idea on how I can solve this issue? Any help would be appreciated!

Links should not create any problems in Keynote. If they are set up correctly on text, the text will be underlined. Objects that have links will have a curved arrow bottom right, if you click the arrow a popup will display the link information.
Try this repair for Keynote, ensure you complete all the tasks and in the order shown:

delete all the iWork applications if you have them, not just Keynote, using Appcleaner from Mac Update, its a freeware application

empty the trash: Finder > Empty Trash

Shut down your Mac, wait 30 seconds, then power on the Mac, immediately after the start chime, hold down the Shift key
When you see the grey Apple symbol and progress indicator (a spinning gear), release the Shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, then hold down the Shift key again as you click Log in.

Let the Mac fully boot up, it will take longer as the OS is repairing the drive

when fully booted, go to Applications > Utilities > Disc Utility; click on the boot drive then First Aid tab and click repair disc permissions

when complete, restart the Mac normally, Apple menu > Restart

How to link a text box to an anchor frame in the master pages?

Ok, as the title states, we are trying to figure out if it is possible to link a text box to an anchor frame in the master page. When you look at our Master Page layout, we have a text box in the upper left hand corner of the left hand page, this is used for our machine serial numbers. Then we have an anchor frame that automatically fills out the figure number. Let's say I have pages 2 & 3 (left & right), they have a S/N at the top of the page for the machine, then pages 4 & 5 have a different S/N. If I have to add more pages in between pages 2 & 3 (bumping the current 4 & 5 to 6 & 7), the anchor frame bumps to the next page, but the S/N text box doesn't. Is there a way to fix it so that they both move to the next page? Thanks for the help.
P.S. I can include images and other info if needed.

Master Page:
This is the master page set up, the "Page Text Box" has the flow set to "B" while the S/N text box has the flow set to "A". This setup is for our parts manuals, the left page is usually an illustration while the right page is usually a parts list. The text box, anchored frame & paragraph tag are empty in the master page set up. The "page text box" has a flow of "B" and the "S/N text box" has a master flow of "A".
Body Page 1:
When we create new pages, the paragraph tag automatically fills in the figure title on the left page, then we add an anchor frame within the text box to hold the illustration. You will notice that I added in a "test" serial number at the top of the page. Now if I need to go back and add two pages before this, the anchor frame, illustration and parts list will move to a new page, but the S/N text box will not. The "Before S/N TBD" would stay on the original page.
This is what happens, the text box containing the illustration and the parts list "bump" to the next page, but the S/N text box does not. So the question we have is there a way to link that text box to the page so when we create new pages the S/N text box moves with the illustration.

Master pages working with the books panel

Hi everyone,
I'm starting a book which will have about 20 chapters in it. I'm using the books panel to work with it all but I'm not sure how to handle the master pages so that they'll work across all chapters within the books panel. I have a 2-page master spread set up with both of the pages having automatic numbering and the left hand spread with the name of the publication. The right hand spread will have the chapter name and this will be the only element that will change from chapter to chapter.
So I wondered if there was a way to set it up so that all the chapters were based on this master page. I'd then need to change each of the chapter headings for each chapter but then if I needed to make a change to the left master page, ie. with the publication name on it, is there a way to make this change on just one of the chapters and then all the other chapters would update to reflect the change.
Appreciate any advice.

Normally I would say make a second master page for the chapter start nad use that, then include the master pages when synchronizing the book, but there's another thread from yesterday where that is not working for the user, and I'm still trying to figure out why.

Everytime I copy pages from one ID CS3 doc to another, it re-applies the master page objects!!

This is a topic I would really like to get to the bottom of.
We have InDesign CS3 templates for creating our reports.
These templates contain around 10 different master pages with grey placeholder image boxes and text boxes with dummy text.
When we copy pages from one ID document to another, all the master page objects that were originally assigned to the pages are re-applied!!
Resulting in lots of grey dummy boxes and text boxes re-appearing on top of the page items!!
It's so annoying because we always customise the pages once we've pulled down master pages to work on, so when we copy pages across to other documents we have to apply the blank master to be able to kick out all the master objects easily. Then we need to add the page numbers and footers back onto the blank master page.
My question is, is there a way to switch this off, so when I move or copy pages from one document to another, nothing happens relating to master page objects, the pages simply just copy across as they are?
Please help! If not I may have to ask an external developer to write a script to fix this, it drives 900 of us crazy!

Just a bit of further clarification on this issue (very few people really understand what's going on with master pages and overridden master page items):
When you override a master page item, the object is moved to a local page, but a connection is maintained with the original master page item. This a) allows for the override to be removed (and return the object to its original state). This also, b) allows for changes made to the original master page item (other than the changes made to the local item from the point that it was overridden) to effect the local item as well.
When the connection to the master page item cannot be maintained, the local item gets disconnected totally from the master page, and becomes a regular, run-of-the-mill page item.
In light of this, there's three ways you can end up with duplicate master items:
Reapplying a master page (or applying a new one). When you reapply a master, all overridden master page items get detached from the master, and the original mster page item appears again in its original state. Most of the time this produces unwanted duplication of objects. To fix up your page, you have two options: a) Delete the master page item, and b) copying the contents of the original to the new master page item. The disadvantage of "a" is that you end up with an item which is totally detached from the master, and changing the item on the master will have no effect on the local item. The disadavantage of "b" is that it's a lot of work...
Moving a page to a different document. When you move a page to a different document which has the same master as the one originally applied, the master in the new doc is applied, and the effects are identical to reapplying a master page (i.e. overridden objects are detached). If the applied master (i.e. a master with the same name) does not exist in the new doc, the master is transferred over to the new doc along with the page, and the connections to the master page are preserved (well, re-created actually...). The workarounds in case #1 apply here as well.
When page sides change in a document, the objects on the facing page appears.
What happens here is a bit confusing, but here's an approximate explanation:
When you apply a master to a page or spread in InDesign, what you are actually doing is applying an entire spread to an individual page. You can thing of a master spread as an overlay (or more precisely: underlay) on the page with a window cut out to the exact page dimensions.
When the page side changes that "window cut-out" shifts to show the master spread items which correspond to the position within the spread of your current page (i.e. recto or verso). All objects which exist outside the window shift out of view (but still exist!).
When an object is overridden, the position of the object is defined by its location on the local page, NOT its position on the master spread. When the page then changes sides, the object remains where it was on the page (even though the object it's connected to on the master spread moves out of the window of view). A corresponding object on the facing page of the master (if it exists) will then show in addition to the overridden one.
Now remember: contrary to the first two cases, both objects are based on master ones: one visible one and one invisible one.
Dealing with this third case requires much more care than the first two.
The obvious way to deal with this would be similar to the first two, but if you remove the local object and transfer the content to the new maste object, the invisible master object on the non-visible page was actually removed, so when the page sides change again, the object will now be connected to the now-invisible master page item, and the correct master page item will be gone!
The "correct" way to deal with this would be to transfer the content to the new master page item and remove overrides (not delete!) on the local item (which will make it disappear, because it moves back to the invisible page). Of course, when page sides change again, it becomes necessary to repeat the entire process.
If the local object gets deleted, then your master spread is missing objects with no visible indicator of the fact. This can lead to confusion when the document might be edited at some later point in time.
I believe that this complicated and un-intuitive behavior of master pages is part of the reason people tend to avoid using master page items. Documents tend to get messed up in really odd ways... It's a real shame, because extensive use of master page items has a lot of potential for streamlining workflows and saving an awful lot of time. This behavior really puts a damper on really using master pages as templates.
Getting master page items to work the way they "should" was a big part of what I was trying to accomplish with AutoFlow Pro... When the master page items are defined as such (i.e. given a unique name), AutoFlow Pro solves all three of the above issues by keeping overridden master page items connected to the master page items on the currently applied master (and when a new master is applied as well!).
(When I have a bit of spare time, I think I'll write this up on my blog with some visuals to make this easier to grasp...)

"New Document" button on ribbon not working in the "Master Page Gallery" in Internet Explorer 10 & 11

I'm trying to add a "JavaScript Display Template" to my "Master Page Gallery" but when I click on the "New Document" button and select "JavaScript Display Template" it opens the "Add a master page" dialog
and prompts me to upload a file. I've ran into this problem with "Compatibility View" set to both "On" or "Off". I'm able to upload files but I can't get the new forms to show up.
This happens on the root site collection site. For subsites, the "New Document" button is completely grayed out.
FYI - I am a site collection admin and in the "Owners" group for each site.
How can I fix this?

According to your post, my understanding is that "New Document" button on ribbon falied to work in the "Master Page Gallery".
In the root site, please make sure you enter all the necessary information when you upload file.
In the other word, you need to make sure the save the “JavaScript Display Template" successfully.
In the subsites, when you click the “Master Page” under Master Page Gallery in the sub site site setting page, the "New Document" button is completely grayed out.
If you want to add the template, you need to active the “SharePoint Server Publishing” feature in the Site sitting->Manage site features.
However, the “Master Page” under Master Page Gallery will become to “Master pages and page layouts”.
If you click the Master pages and page layouts”, you will go to the
Master Page Gallery of the root site, and then you can add Document.

According to your description, my understanding is that you want to change the master page and theme dynamically based on the anonymous users or authenticated users.
Per my knowledge, there is not an OOB way to change the master page and theme dynamically.
SharePoint is based on Asp.net, as we know Asp.Net request processing is based on pipeline model, so we can delevlop a custom HttpModule to dynamic change the master page based on current logon user profile(using SP Object Model to get).
Another solution could be to use the SecurityTrimmed control that injects the CSS depending on global user permissions, more information, please refer to
it.

How can I hide the master page when saving a pdf?

I designed a form that uses a master page so that I can use headers and footers without changing 10 different pages. When I save to PDF so the form can be filled out it saves the Master Page as the first page though it has no content. I have to save the PDF as a static file because it needs to be filled out on the iPad.
Anyhelp please?

Hmm,
Not really. Acrobat must display at least one page of the form. You can set the presence of all of your Design Pages to hidden, but Acrobat will display at least one instance of the Master Page.
The Master Page is available in LC Designer for objects that you want to repeat on more than one page. Yes, typically this includes header and footer objects.
If you want to hide all of your main form pages, then include a blank page and display this when hiding all of the other pages. See an example here: http://assure.ly/frjYW5.

Enhancement in the Master data Tab in the BP transaction

Dear all,I need to create news fileds in the Master data tab in the BP transaction. This fields are not imput fields but the content of this fields are customer specifics number which will be generated when creating a BP. This numebr will be generated in the BUT000 Table in the BP number field.
My Question is : How can i create New Fields in the Master Data Tab, is it possible to use the EEWB for that or not ?

Hi liliane,
You can use eewb however it should be used very cautiously as once changes are made there are tables and attributes that are created correspondingly. I mean activities like Bdoc creation for the fields added happen simultaneously and you may not be able to revert changes.

Can't change the master page after upgrading to SharePoint 2013.

After upgrading our farm to SharePoint 2013 we are having trouble changing the master page for sites that don't have sub-sites. We are still using the v4 UI version, and that appears to be what is causing the problem. The error we get when going to /_layouts/ChangeSiteMasterPage.aspx
is:

I took a peek at the source code for AreaChromeSettingsPage.OnLoad and found that it references a CheckBox control that does not exist in the v4 ChangeSiteMasterPage.aspx:

Thanks Mike - Could you please share what is your next step then? I also have custom master pages and layout but I am going to make new master page and layout in 2013 as we need to change the existing branding too. so, i upgrade the site collection. I understand
the Look and Feel will not persist after the upgrade but I am concern that at least the page should show the content on the page after the upgrade. The page had Calendar webppart on it but after the upgrade it is coming blank.
any suggestion?

How do I apply a Script to Master Pages?

Hello,
Please can anyone tell me how to run or edit this script correctly?
I have a simple Find and Replace script that ran perfectly on CS2. Now I am running in CS4 and only the first part of the script works which applies the documents pages, but the second part, which applies to the master pages, does not.
I tried running the CS2 script from “Adobe\InDesign\Version 6.0\en_US\Scripts\Scripts Panel\Version 4.0 Scripts” and it still does not work on the master pages.

How do one apply 2 different types of page numbers in the same document??? I do not want a number on the first page!

Click in the second section text:
Inspector > Layout > Section > Configuration > uncheck Use previous headers and footers
Then go back and simply delete what's in the header/footer of the first section.

Why Is The Menu On The Master Page BELOW The Objects In Other Pages?

I added a menu on the master page using the Composition widget called featured news and it stays behind the other objects on normal pages.
How do I fix this? Here are the pictures of the menu when it's closed and when it's open.

Make a new layer, which is by default placed above all other layers.
Go to your master page and drag the menu onto this layer.

Add a left column to the master page

Good day.
I am working on removing the Quick launch column from my master page and inserting in its place a column where i could put my own html with links, images, comments etc, basically a tall and narrow page on the left side of the master page.
I successfully removed the Quick launch bar (by display:none). But when i try to carve out a space for my own left column, using div or table, it gets ugly - when the IE opens any page in the site the contents of the page is displayed below - not alongside
and to the right - of my column.
Do you know how to create that custom left column on a master page?
