How To Post Sites On Non .Mac Servers

Hi Everyone!
I like iWeb - very easy to use indeed.
My wife has a small company that could do with a decent web site, but the business already has its own .co.uk site and I would like to create a new web site for her and then upload it onto the current ISP's server.
Is this possible, and, if so, how do you do it?
TIA
David

Hello
I've tried Fetch and Captain FTP. Both very easy to use. Captain seems to let you customise your uploads a little more, but Fetch looks cleaner and has a cute little running dog icon - if you like that sort of thing
Good luck

  • How to translate/convert read non-mac files

I can't open my bank statement which I download from the internet. It's in 'Money' format.
But since I can 'translate' .xls when working in Appleworks why can't I get a downloaded equivalent version?
What's the best way to convert non-mac files that can't be concerted by maclinkplus (which is installed in my iBook)?
    Thanks
    Gordon

That's something to take up with your bank. Most bank & some credit card company web sites give you the option of what format you can download your account information in. Unfortunately, most don't give an option of tab-delimited text, just CSV (comma-delimited), & AppleWorks can't open CSV natively. You can, though, open the file in a work processing document & use Find/Replace to Find the comma delimiters, usually "," including the quotes & replace with \t, the "code" for tab. You will need to manually remove the beginning & ending quotes. Then select all & paste into a spreadsheet.
Or you can do what I do for several of mine. I access my account info using Camino or Firefox, not Safari, & select > copy > paste into my spreadsheet. I use Camino or Firefox because the tabs between fields are usually copies as such. Safari doesn't "understand" these tabs & will paste as a lot of spaces & returns.

  • How do I download a non Mac Application?

I am new to Macs and have looked in my systems preferences and security but cannot find anything that says I can download a non Mac application / programme.
Can anyone help. Where do I find this setting. Right now all I can dowload is Mac stuff
    Thanks
    Jane

OS X Mountain Lion has got Gatekeeper, that is set up to allow only Mac App Store apps and apps from identified developers. To change this, open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General, and choose "Never" under "Allow applications downloaded from"

  • HELP PLEASE: Trying to upload site to non .mac server

    Hi there,
I am a complete newbie when it comes to uploading a site to a server.
I have completed the site I made in iWeb, have not included spaces in the title for each page. All the movies are in .mov or .mp4 format. all my pictures have been attached through iPhoto. I have published it to a folder on my desktop. I am trying to upload to my cousin's server which he created himself using Cyberduck. Unfortunetly he is away the the moment so I can not ask for his assitance. I have the password and user name to the server, & have tried uploading the site once before. nothing came up, apart from a blank page with a few folders that were orignally there before I uploaded the site. Cyberduck says the upload was successful, clearly it wasn't. All the files and folders are shown within the program.
Can anyone help me? I need to upload the site by today, thanks...

blank page with a few folders that were orignally
there before I uploaded the site.
This usually means you failed to upload the index.html file. You must upload two items: the index.html file and the folder which has the same name as your site does inside the iWeb app.
    Here are some tips:

Please provide your url and the name of your site inside iWeb.

  • Links to slideshow stopped working on non .mac published site

I was helping my friend redo his website in iWeb. It was previously done in iWeb, and worked fine when published to a folder and uploaded to his verizon account.
Today, when we exported and upload none of the links on the photo gallery pages worked. Clicking a photo to enlarge it found a broken link, and the slide show stopped working too.
I thought I forgot to do something, so I uploaded the old version of the site. That stopped working, too.
    Am I missing something?

The Apple slideshow (the one built-in to iWeb) using the photo template is supposedly one of the ".Mac-only" features of iWeb. It uses some resources off the .Mac servers, so it probably won't work when the pages are hosted on other non-.Mac servers.

  • RSS button on non mac server

    Greetings,
Very new at this. I want to install an RSS button on my blog. The mac button doesn't work on Yahoo. Any suggestion?
Any reaction as well regarding the Technorati button?
    Counting button?
    Many thanks.

I'm not sure why you are saying that the RSS subscribe button isn't working at Yahoo. This is most likely due to the fact that you entered the incorrect host address in the "Publish to Folder" dialog window.
For example...if your hosting account is accessed by typing in http://www.yourdomain.com then you must type this into the URL box of the "Publish to Folder" dialog window. Then when you upload to your host, you must upload the two items that iWeb puts into the folder....
    My Folder
    \__ index.html
    \__ mysite folder
Don't upload the enclosing folder (My Folder)....just upload the index.html file and the mysite folder, so that your server directory structure looks like...
    http://www.mydomain.com
    \__ index.html
    \__ mysite folder
It is important to keep the relationship between the index.html file and the mysite folder intact as published by iWeb....otherwise your RSS feed URL will not work.
On a non-.Mac button, the RSS feed and Podcast subscribe buttons should work fine. The Apple counter does not work on non-.Mac servers. You will have to look into other services like http://www.statcounter.com for that.

  • How to password protect non .mac web site

does anyone have step-by-step directions on how to make my web page password protected on a non .mac web space?
    for example, http://www.yoursite.net/~userid
My internet service provider does not support web page creation, they just provide the space.
The only thing they said was the path to my directory is /rmgrazi/public_html/ and I should create my index.html file inside the public folder. I've tried creating and uploading a .htaccess file in the public folder, and then putting a .htpasswd file in my root directory /rmgrazi/
This doesn't seem to work. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for your help -- I'm not an expert by any means -- this is my first website... just wanting to put up a family website to share with friends & people I know.
    OK, the url is http://www.hickorytech.net/~rmgrazi/
Right now I just have a blank page up that says "test website"
My .htaccess file is located in /rmgrazi/public_html/ (yes, I put it inside the public folder in order to password protect my whole site).
By the way I'm using TextEdit in OS X, so when I upload the original file with Fetch, it looks like htaccess.txt -- after it's uploaded (as text, not binary of course) then I simply change the name to .htaccess
My .htaccess file includes the following:
    AuthUserFile /rmgrazi/.htpasswd
    AuthName Members Area
    AuthType Basic
    Require valid-user
Then I uploaded the .htpasswd one level up to /rmgrazi/ like it says in .htaccess.
The text in this file is just one line with my username:password (the password is written in code). I found a website that does this automatically. Then I just cut & paste it in apple+v
I tried using the Terminal application in OS X panther to see if the server path needs to be longer -- I logged into my ftp.hickorytech.net and entered "pwd" -- that command is supposed to show the server path. /rmgrazi/public_html/ are the only folders I can see. "/" is as far back as it will show.
In Fetch I can change the permissions for .htaccess and .htpasswd by clicking Get Info -- I tried all different combinations, 644, 711, etc... Maybe my permissions are set wrong?

  • Can You Create a Fully-functional Web Gallery for a Non-.Mac Site?

I love the idea of the web galleries that iPhoto '08 uses and would buy iLife '08 for that alone... but I don't have a ,Mac account and don't plan to. I have seen only one mention of this in these discussions, and it was only speculation. So here's the question:
Can iPhoto '08 create web galleries with all the goodies involved--skimming over a gallery to see thumbnails of all the images for example--which will be fully functional on a private, non-.mac web site?
If so, then count me in.

this may seem other than your request, but I have a suggestion:
just buy a darn .Mac account already. Personally, I've grown tired of hearning about how .Mac is unreasonably priced all these years. Well guess what, a basic account now gets you 10 gigs of space for about $90 if you pay the taxes. Thats an additional fee that you feel you shouldn't have to blah, blah, blah. -Sure, you can host to your own .com via iWeb and I'm sure we'll all hear about how to host other things without a .Mac account soon. But just pretend iLife costs an additional $90 and move on. It's worth it once you start to use it and you can say good buy to your concern. again, sorry for the indifference, but you can easily get past your issue. Think of it this way... there are many ways to upgrade to iLife '08 that will save you the same amount of money. If you're that cheap, go that route. If you're reasonable, like the rest of us that understand we need to pay (yes, unfortunately) for Apple's innovation, get on the boat and enjoy the ride.
crucify me if you want... this ends my rant.

I'm using a Mac. After swithcing to ICloud will I be able to use IWeb to upload and publish my sites hosted by other servers like Prohosting ?

iWeb has two other ways to publish your site...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/Publish-Website.html
... and the second method allows you a choice of how you upload the files...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/URLs-Favicons.html
    Here's a publishing workflow checklist...

The MobileMe only features can be replaced by alternatives...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/Comments-Password-Protect.html
If you have folders of assets outside of the main website folder on MobileMe, download them from the Apple server. From the Finder Go menu, follow the path iDisk/My iDisk/ to get there. Your website files are in the Web/Sites folder. Drag any files/folders onto the desktop.
Use an FTP application to upload these assets to the root folder on your new server...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/Search-Engine-Optimization/Upload.html
...and change the relevant URLs to...
    http://www.domain-name.com/Folder-Name/file-name.file-extension
There are lots of options for hosting for about half the cost of MobileMe...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/Website-Hosting.html
If you have been using a web.me.com domain name, you need to register a new one. Most hosting services give you at least one free and registering with your hosting company will make forwarding and managing it a lot easier.
Make sure you add the new name to Google and create, upload and enter a new sitemap.xml...

If you have inbound links on other sites...

  • How to Defragment a FATx or NTFS (NON-MAC) partition/drive in Mac OSx

This is not another discussion about "How to defragment a native Mac partition/drive"
I've been roaming around lots of forums and everybody ask how to defragment a Mac Drive or Partition.. and the answers are always like "Why would you even want to defragment a your Mac.. OSx automatically does it for you.. Mac is so wonderful that ... bla bla bla..." ... I GOT IT, Ok..?
This time is different, I would like to know...
What tool should I use to defragment a NON-Mac Disk/Partition??
Say that you happend to have an external hard drive, which is in FATx or NTFS (Windows) format, then you attach it to your Mac and.. wel.. you want to defragment the disk from there because you just dont have windows Laptop/PC on hand.
Is this even possible from Mac, given that Mac OS is so wonderful that does not even need to defrag its file system?
I hope everybody understand my question before giving me the same answers once again.
    Thank you very much!

Use DiskWarrior, respect your fellow users here, and perhaps stop with the multicolour, multi-font sized posts, which annoy the h#ll out of people that would normally help you.
DiskWarrior will do all you need to do, except perhaps for a Permissions repair once or twice a year if you believe it to be necessary.
    Cheers
