How to preserve albums/folders when transferring library

I just copied my entire iPhoto library folder on my iMac to an external drive, then I transferred the library to my MacBook. I have organized my photos on my iMac into many albums and folders. That organization did not remain on the external drive or the MacBook (even though iPhoto is installed on the laptop).
Is there any way to transfer photos with albums and folders intact? Do I have to create new albums and folders on the laptop? Yikes! I have 4000 photos.
iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

moreconfused:
What you did is the correct way to transfer an entire library from one Mac to another: copy the iPhoto Library folder intact from the one Mac into the Pictures folder on the other Mac. It should be the only iPhoto Library folder in the Picture folder on the second Mac. Then, when launched, iPhoto will open it by default. I would, however, do the following before trying to open the library for the first time on the second Mac: download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administartive name in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
Give it another go from Mac A to Mac B and run BatChmod on the library folder once it gets to Mac B.
I didn't ask before hand but both iPhoto apps are the save version, right?
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Can I force iTunes NOT to create artist/album folders when importing?

I've unchecked the "Let iTunes organize your music" box. All I want is to have iTunes rip the song, and place the song (unburdened by artist and album folders) in an external hard drive.
I can't seem to make that happen - can iTunes do it? If not, any Mac-based program you can recommend?
    Thanks.

Can I force iTunes NOT to create artist/album folders when importing?
    No.
Just RIP it and drag it from the main iTunes screen to wherever you want it.

  • How to preserve embedded artwork when converting to AAC 128kbps for iPod?

    Hi
I am using the new 'convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps ACC' option in iTunes 9.1.1 (12). All of my artwork is embedded in Apple Lossless files, but on conversion to AAC for the iPod this embedded artwork gets stripped out of the file. Instead I am getting about 12 ithmb files in the iPod_Control/Artwork/ folder totalling about 6GB which probably corresponds to all the embedded artwork for all the tracks, i.e. 20000 tracks x 300KB = 6GB, and an ArtworkDB file, which presumably is for CoverFlow.
Because I use PodWorks to backup my iPod Music to my Mac I would like all of the artwork to stay embedded in the AAC files, so that it gets uploaded to the Mac. Artwork stays embedded when you make an AAC version of an Apple Lossless track in iTunes normally, but not it would seem when transferring to the iPod. And if this new method of encoding on the fly to the iPod can't preserve embedded artwork then it makes little sense to clog up the iPod with 6GB of artwork!
I am wondering if there is any setting I am missing to get this working, or if this is something Apple still need to get around to sorting,
    Thanks
    Nick

    Please!!
    I'm not silly...
As I said, selecting View actual size shows the image with sometimes drastically impaired quality (regardless of the window size).
I also said I have preferences set to view at 100%
It now seems as if this is only happening with scans I've made here.
Images downloaded from the internet are converting indentically, no problem. But my scans are being resized when converting.
I wonder if anyone with a bit of technical know-how can give me some clues as to why this is happening. It would seem to be something to do with the file itself.
(There was another post on here with the same problem but for some reason its been 'archived' though the last posting was this month and the query was not answered. So I've posted the question again.)

  • Using Illustrator CS6, how to preserve drawn colors when Save For Web to PNG?

Using Illustrator CS6 on Mac OSX 10.9.1:
step 1. I open a new file for Web profile.
step 2. I verify that File > Document Color Mode is RGB.
step 3. I draw a square and set it's color to 0,103,197 (decimal).
step 4. I click File > Save For Web
step 5. In the popup that opens, I set to PNG-24, and verify the option Convert To sRGB is not selected.
step 6. Using the Mac's DigitalColorMeter, I observe the color is 0,109,191 in the Save For Web popup. If I save it, then open the saved PNG file, it's color is also 0,109,191.
How to do this so the colors don't change?
step 7. I close Save For Web popup.
step 8. I verify Edit > Color Settings for Working Spaces is set to Monitor RGB, and that the Color Management Policies for RGB is off.
step 9. I verify Edit > Assign Profile is set to Don't Color Manage This Document.
step 10. I verify View > Proof Colors is off.
Can anyone provide a set of Illustrator CS6 settings that let me save a PNG image with the same colors it's drawn in so I can use that PNG image in a website?
I must be missing something obvious, because anyone working in web design must do this day in and day out, please let me know what procedure people follow to achieve this.
    UPDATE:
Using the above procedure DOES preserve the colors when embedding the PNG image in a webpage viewed in Firefox and Chome, but NOT for Safari. Also, the colors are not preserved in Mac's Preview software, as well as Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac.
I'm pretty new to all this. Hoping someone can provide some perspective on what typical procedure people use for web development when working with colors in Illustrator CS6.

    Hi, Kiran,
As the others have said, the only way ^1^ to get the result set in any particular order is to use an ORDER BY clause.
Here's the general way to do that in SQL in case of a UNION:
    WITH  union_results     AS
select 'a' AS txt, 1 AS sort_key from DUAL
        union
         select 'd',        2             from DUAL
        union
         select 'b',        3           from DUAL
        union
         select 'c',        4           from dual
    SELECT    txt
    FROM       union_results
    ORDER BY  sort_key
;In SQL, you can only ORDER BY expressions that arei n the SELECT clause, so to avoid displaying sort_key, the sub-query is necessary. A lot of people don't use pure SQL for this; they have their front end hide the sort_key column. In SQL*Plus, for example, you can say COLUMN sort_key NOPRINT.
^1^ There is one exception, which does NOT apply to this case, or most others. CONNECT BY, even without ORDER BY, does impose a partial ordering.

  • How to get album illustrations when i-tunes can't find it?

    Hello!
Anything is in the question, uh?
    Thanks a lot!

Try doing an Internet search for the album. When you find the cover picture copy it. Then, in iTunes, right-click on the song (or songs), then choose Get Info. Then the last tab should be Artwork. You can then paste the picture there.

  • How can I use iTunes when my library is somewhere else?

Sounds like a dumb question, I know. But here it goes.
I just put my whole iTunes library on an external FW drive and symlinked to it in my music folder.
I love having the extra space on my PowerBook, and I rarely listen to music on my PB when I'm away from my desk.
One problem, though. If I try to listen to an MP3 feed (Shoutcast) without my FW drive, iTunes launches, but it won't continue because it can't find the library.
So is there any solution to this? I guess I'd have to use QuickTime Player for those streams when I don't have my library attached?
Thanks for any ideas or solutions.

Hmm - OK.  Thanks. I've tried but can't figure out how.  If you have any descriptions of how to do this, please send.  Or, am I over-thinking it?  It's not working for me.
    Thanks again!!

  • How to fix: Music corrupts when transferred to ipod. This happens with the same songs on multiple ipods and the song plays regularly in itunes...

Basically, I've already described the problem. Some songs play perfectly fine in itunes but the same songs corrupt when placed on different devices of varying age. Therefore, I don't think there's something wrong with the original file and I don't think there's something wrong with all of my devices. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

    Hello there klundie,
I was researching the issue you are experiencing, and have come to the conclusion that the songs in question may need to be converted and re imported. This article, iTunes: How to convert a song to a different file format outlines how to re import songs that are already in your itunes library, which I believe will resolve the issue.
You can find the article here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1550
To convert a song's file format:
    Open iTunes Preferences.
    Windows: Choose Edit > Preferences.
    Mac: Choose iTunes > Preferences.
Click the General button, then click the Importing Settings button in the second section of the window.
From the Import Using pop-up menu, choose the encoding format that you want to convert the song to, then click OK to save the settings.
Select one or more songs in your library, then from the Advanced menu, choose one of the following (The menu item changes to show what's selected in your Importing preferences):
    Create MP3 version
    Create AAC version
    Create AIFF version
    Create WAV version
    Create Apple Lossless version
If you haven't imported some songs into iTunes yet, you can import and convert them at the same time. This will create a converted copy of the file in your iTunes Library based on your iTunes preferences. To convert all the songs in a folder or on a disk, hold down the Option key (Mac) or Shift key (Windows) and choose Advanced > ConvertImport preference setting. The Import preference setting will match what you chose in step 3. iTunes will prompt you for the location of the folder or disk you want to import and convert. All the songs in the folder or on the disk will be converted. Note: Some purchased songs are encoded using a protected AAC format that prevents them from being converted. iTunes Plus purchases are not protected and can be converted.
The song in its original format and the newly converted song appear in your library.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • Saving my folders when transfering from pc

I had all (9500) my photos organized nicely in my pictures on my pc. I exported them to an external hardrive. then imported the photos into iphoto. I was hoping the folders would become rolls. instead I have one library divided into years. How can I get the pictures grouped and labeled the way they were in my folders? I am new to Mac can anyone help?

To recreate your folders as Rolls, drag them one at a time to the Source (or left-hand) Pane. Then switch to Roll View (View -> Film Rolls).

  • How to preserve original size when converting to PDF in Preview.

I'm using Preview in Snow Leopard.
Trying to create multipage PDFs from document scans.
I'm finding that when the scanned image (tiff, png, jpg) is converted to PDF in Preview the size reduces.
Selecting 'View actual size' shows the image with sometimes drastically impaired quality.
This does not always happen. I have some images that stay the same size and quality.
What factors cause this reduction in size in some images but not in others?
I'm not sure but this could be only images that have been scanned by me. If so, what do I need to do to prevent the problem?
These are not large images, just standard size pages.
I have all the preferences to view at 100%
This is not for printing, only for viewing on-screen.

  • How do you upload playlists when your library size exceeds the ipod size?

So I recently loaded more music onto my computer than my ipod can hold. Itunes created a new playlist, which the ipod is now using as the "library" that is uploaded into the ipod. That is all fine and dandy, but now my other playlists are no longer being uploaded into the ipod. How do I create playlists within a playlist?

Quit using the playlist that iTunes created. Tell your iPod options to only update selected playlists. Then check off your favorite playlists you created.

  • EPS-file: How to preserve resource fork when moving file to Linux

    Hi!
We have a following problem on our DAM system:
When saving an EPS-file from Photoshop CS2 on 10.4 with Machintosh preview we can´t transfer the file to Linux DAM system without losing the preview picture. Apparently this is because the PICT preview file is in resource fork of the file and Linux doesn´t understand anything about those.
The problem occurs only with Freehand MX when using these un-"resource forked" files. Then using EPS with TIFF-preview we get a black background if cut path is used in the image so that´s not a proper solution.
Can ANYONE point me a possible solution: how can I transfer Macintosh files on Linux without losing resource forks??
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Control-click on the file and choose the Create
Archive of "blah" item in the menu that pops up.
This creates a file called "blah.zip", which has
been compressed in such a way that it can be safely
stored on non-Mac systems. When it is de-archived
on another Mac OS X system (by double-clicking it),
the file should be intact. (Note that third-party
apps for decoding zip files may not properly restore
the resource fork, as the Mac's archive function
creates a zip archive with the resource contents
stored in a special way, which other unzip utilities
will just read as another file (or folder, don't
    recall which).
Thanks but I should have been more precise:
What I meant was that is there any tool for Linux to handle resource forks without archiving/compressing the file?
Our DAM generates preview image for the EPS automatically so it can´t be inside compressed file.

  • How to preserve row heights when copy/pasting in Numbers 3.2.2?

I've created an invoice in Numbers with different row heights and column widths. When I copy a series of rows and then paste them on a new row, all the formatting is there except all the rows where I paste are all the same heights. Do I need to manually re-adjust every single row or is there some way to preserve the row heights when pasting.  Thanks anyone.

When I try to duplicate the problem you are describing, I get the behavior you are wishing for. Sorry, there must be something going on that you aren't including in your conditions statement.
