How to preserve image quality.

I'm using a Cannon 7.1 Canon point-and-shoot camera on the highest quality settings. I've been adding pictures from this camera to iPhoto for years and they look fine on screen. Recently, after uploading to an online picture printing service, I noticed that the pictures were pixilated and low quality. I looked in my Data folder that holds the pictures and most of my images are about 60kb. Is this low? Have I been importing at a low quality? If so, how do I fix this so I preserve the full quality of the photos?
Thanks,
Nile.

There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • How do l preserve image quality when reducing the size of my brochure for use as a pdf?

l've designed a brochure full of my work, and reduced the size so l can email the final pdf...but my test recipients are saying the images are not sharp...they are too soft.
Can anyone help me preserve image sharpness?

Don't use the resize feature as the images will be changed to 72 dpi. Resize the images BEFORE adding them to Pages. Make them about 200 dpi if they are to be printed. You can have less resolution if the pdf is only for the screen.

  • InDesignCC. How to keep image quality with exporting Interactive PDF?

Hello everyone, I'm using InDesign CC, I'm exporting a PDF that has PNG images, the problem is that I'm loosing the sharpness and the pureness in the images after exporting the file into PDF Interactive... the Settings I'm using for Image Handling are Compression: Automatic , JPEG Quality: Maximum, Resolution PPI: 300..
The file size is "Letter" with web Intent (792px x 612px) the images I'm using are big and have great quality, can anyone tell me how I export into PDF interactive without loosig images quality? I want to keep this pureness and sharpness in the images
    Thanks in advance

It depends on the image. Best way for us to advise you is to open your image, then go to Image > Image Size and upload a screen capture of the Image Size box with the readings.
What you might have working against you is not enough pixels. Upsampling may just make it blurred. But we will see.
300 ppi is also not carved in stone, you may get away with 200 ppi depending on where you are sending it for printing.
And lastly, if you are paying a commercial printer to do this, it's best to consult with them and see what they can do.

  • How to improve image quality for book

I recently had a book printed from iPhoto 9 (large, hardcover) and the images in the book seem dull and dark compared to the actual images. For example, in one image of a church taken at dusk you can clearly see the outline of the church, including some details, and even people in front of it - but in the book, this area is completely black. I have had books printed before from iPhoto8 and had been happy with the past results.
Apple is refunding my purchase and letting me submit the book again, but told me if I don't edit the photos, I may have the same issue (though they also said it could have been a printer issue that day). Customer support did agree that the image quality itself is good. So, my question is, before I resubmit this book - in general, what attributes or combination of attributes are best to change to make the images more vibrant and not dark when printed for the book (ie. increase color saturation and exposure?)
    Thank you.

Thanks. I did indeed preview the book before, and I have followed their tips. As, I said, I have purchased several books in the past and no issue. Apple even sent a couple pictures back to me as an attachment to show what they received, and they matched what I sent, but NOT what was printed. What printed is definitely much darker and in many cases you can't even make out the detail that you could in the images (including the ones they sent back to me for comparison). Maybe the printer really was off. I'll try a few enhancements and try again.

  • PDF Portfolio - how to keep image quality?

    Hello!
So today I decided to make a pdf portfolio using acrobate and I must say it's a pretty neat feature, really simple to use. I had no problem until I dicovered it downgraded the quality of all the jpg images I put in my portfolio (which doesn't happen when I just make a single pdf file from those same jpg-es).I'm guessing that happens for a reason, I mean to make the whole portfolio smaller in size for web publishing purposes, but in this particular case I keep my images in their original size no matter how big it all gets.
So I tried all the different settings and options but nothing helped. I even looked online for a solution, but no one even mentions this problem. I know it's probably some detail that just needs to be adjusted but I just cant find that one (or I'm being blind/stupid as usual).
So dear adobe community you are my last solution, please somebody help me figure this one out!

  • How to improve image quality

I've been using Motion for a couple of years now and although I'm no expert, I'm really pleased with the possibilities. I mainly use it to create animations that are then watched on a computer - either on a CD or on the web. I've also done a few animations that were later exported to a DVD. I must say, the quality of the image on a TV is terrible. It really looks like an amateur animation. I was just wondering if there was a way to improve the quality of the animation shown on a TV screen. Is it just a question of settings, compression or codec?

The color space on a TV is completely different, and much, much more restrictive, than that of a computer monitor. If you work is destined for NTSC or PAL TV, you really should use a calibrated monitor to view your project as it will be seen so you can make the right choices of color, title and action safe, and watch for interlace issues. You need to make sure your luma and chroma levels are broadcast safe as well.

  • How to improve image quality on mobile devices?

I'm setting up a webcomic at http://minigiggles.com that uses a Flash SWF to show a sequence of images and text within the SWF for each cartoon. I don't want to use a slideshow type setup with individual images because I want people to be able to hotlink and embed the webcomic in their websites. So the images are part of the SWF. On my Droid phone the edge of the images is ragged, while the text is smooth. (When using a Wordpress slideshow plugin where the images are separate files, they display very nicely on my Droid phone, but I don't want to do it that way.) The images are FireworksCS4 PNGs with alpha transparency, converted to symbols in FlashCS4.
Is there anything I can do to the way the images are imported to Flash that will make them display more smoothly in a Droid smartphone?
    Thanks,
    Tom

  • How to maintain image quality?

Hi, what happens is that when I import an image (Object Library -> Image -> click Image -> URL -> pick my image file) the image gets resiszed to a bigger size.
I mean, I design something in Illustrator, I export the work as PNG, I check the output, it looks ok. I import the image into Designer, I preview the page, and it is pixealted or blurry because of the resize. (I'm sure it is a resize problem because I compare both images and one is obviously bigger than the other, like a 20-25% I guess).
I've heard that this happens because Designer only works in 72dpi, but, is there any workaround?.
    Thanks.

Remember that Premiere's program monitor shows the images as video.  If your sequence is interlaced, the program monitor may be displaying every other trace (this is a display option as I recall).
What does it look like when exported and viewed on a TV.
Did the image size on import match the sequence parameters? if your image in Lightroom was say 6 x 4 inches and the resultion set to 72 dpi, the pixel dimensions are 432 x 288.  If you expecting this to fill a 1920 x 1081 sequence, you are going to see degradation as Premier Pro scales it up to fill the image.
It important to remember the difference in mission of lightroom and premiere.  Premiere doesn't give a hoot what the dpi is--it only cares what the pixel dimensions are.
Best approach is to do all scaling in photoshop by cropping the image to the pixel size, e.g. 1920 x 1080.  In the crop tool set a fixed height and width "1920 px" by "1080 px" ===the dpi is irrelevant to premiere pro.
Before cropping check the general preferences in photoshop to ensure you have the best scaling algorithm depending on whether you scaling up or down.

  • How to standardize image quality?

I am working in an INDD (CS 5.5) file and have placed into it EPS graphics that use layers of color at various transparencies. I embedded all the EPS links into this INDD file, then exported it as a PDF. The AI (CS4) file in which I created the graphics, the INDD file, and the PDF (CS5.5) are all in CMYK mode. For some reason, some of the images in the PDF appear washed out, with small dots at various edges of the image. I'm stumped--any ideas as to what the root problem could be?

    Asley,
    in addition to John's comment:
EPS doesn't ever contain layers with variable transparency (besides ordinary
transparency in areas, where no objects are placed).
Exporting AI files as EPS results in flattening. This is not generally wrong,
but it should be done deliberately.
For your workflow it's probably recommended to use AI files in ID.
A very different question is then, whether the ID file should be flattenened,
exporting as PDF. In my opinion it's recommended, because the result can
be checked by you. Flattening at RIP level may cause shifts which are not
    under your control.
I'm aware of the cheap advice 'if your printer is not able to handle Adobe files
with live transparency correctly, the find a better one'.
By the way: I'm using regularly EPS for graphics which are programmed
directly in the programming language PostScript.

  • How come the image quality is so low when sharing a document via the cloud?

I was very intrested in using the cloud for sharing documents, but the resolution is too low. I am on a new creative cloud team subscription.

ok the resolution in the browser is for preview purpose only. if you need to look at the actual resolution you need to download the file.
Lets take an example where you have multiple files more then 10-15 MB and everytime you preview it then you need to download complete 10-15 MB file and then only you will be able to look at it. so to eliminate that we have preview functionality.
    Hope that helps.

  • Lightroom export file size: why so small? How can I maximize image quality?

My image file sizes are much smaller after editing and exporting through Lightroom. Is it impossible to maintain original file size to preserve image quality? Will this smaller file size have negative impact on prints? Any help is appreciated!

Jpgs should never be edited, except as a last resort. And it defeats the purpose of working with raw files if you export a jpg, and then edit it.
Agreed. Unfortunately there are many cameras that only output JPEG format files. The camera file (or any other original JPEG file) is your "raw" unedited file inside LR. If you need to send the file to someone else for further editing who doesn't have LR then Exporting with 100% Quality setting might make sense. I say "might" because it's still possible to get very good results using lower Quality setting JPEGs if you only re-save the file one (1) time after further editing. I agree that 16 bit, ProPhoto RGB, TIFF Export files are best for "critical" work and when using 'Edit in Photoshop' from LR.
I suggest taking a look at the JPEG compression image tests on Jeffrey Friedl's Blog. It's a wealth of information! LR's Quality settings range from 0% to 100% or 100 Quality levels. In reality there are only 13 Quality levels, which are the same as in PS.

If someone gives me a jpg to edit, I always save it as a tiff and convert to 16-bit, to minimize furhter deterioration. I realize that this will not be true 16-bit - no information is added to the image - but my impression is that it will withstand heavy editing better, and not end up with a comb-like histogram.
Why not simply Import the JPEG file into LR and do all your editing non-destructively? There's no need to convert the JPEG file to TIFF unless you need to use LR 'Edit in PS.' Lightroom uses a16 bit/color, ProPhoto RGB, Linear Gamma workspace for all images even when editing sRGB JPEG files.

  • Does Export Version reduces image quality?

    Hi,
I got smaller file size when I "export version" at "original size". My master was jpeg of 5.1MB and I exported in jpeg format, I got 3.6MB. If I "export master", I do get 5.1MB. What does Aperture do to the jpeg image that reduces the file size?
Then I played around with "image quality", which is 10 by default. If I set it to 11, I got a file of 4.1 MB, still smaller than the original 5.1MB. Set it to 12 I got a file of 10.4MB. I am kind of confused. I guess the "image quality" relates to degree of jpeg compression, and a 12 setting means that Aperture compresses the jpeg image at a lower compression ratio than my camera? Does Aperture uncompress jpeg image and re-compress it when "export version"?
The bottom line is, how do I preserve image quality after adjustments? In other words, I would like to export at the same image quality as my original photo, or as close as possible (I assume Aperture reduces jpeg image quality a bit every time I apply adjustments to the image via export). Thanks much for your time.

    Wanderzhuanyou wrote:
    2) When I make adjustments in Aperture I actually work on the image Aperture produces out of the master file - which should be about 73MB in my computer memory as the size of the image is 2848 x 4272 and Aperture works in 16 bit.
Internally, Core Image (which Aperture uses) actually works in 32-bit, but your basic idea is right.
    3) When I export, Apertures compresses this 73MB image (assume adjustments don't make much difference to the image size) to a jpeg file.
First the image will be reduced to the bit depth of your export preset. Image adjustments will make quite a difference to the final file size because areas of high definition detail and a large tonal range will both increase the file size for a given compression setting. So any sharpening, for example, will increase the file size.
As a test, export an image with no sharpening applied, then add some edge sharpening and export it again. You should see a noticeable difference in file sizes.
    Correct?
    Pretty much.

  • Image quality of HDTV vs. monitor

How does the image quality compare, of sending the output of a Powermac to an LCD HDTV with a VGA input, vs. getting a regular LCD monitor (with DVI input)?
I can get a 23" or greater HDTV for about the same price as the Apple 20" Cinema display. Unless the image quality would be significantly worse, this would seem to be the better option as I could also watch TV or hook up a video game console as well. I could kill two birds with one stone and get both a better TV and monitor than what I already have, with just one purchase.
Or a related question, if I were to get an adapter to output to S-Video or Component for use on my current SDTV, is the image quality acceptable? I've tried it in the past with my PC and I wasn't too impressed.

It depends a lot on the HDTV. Some HDTV only display 780 lines which is not much for a modern computer. Other potential problems are overscan (menu bar and dock off the edge) and non-square pixels (distorted images). DVI will give a shaper picture but some HDTV DVI ports do not wok well with computers. Sometimes the manual for the HDTV will give useful information, sometimes you just have to try it and see how it looks.

With SDTV the best you can get is about 640 X 480 interlaced. This is not much, and fine detail will flicker due to the interlace.
