How to preview video transitions in CS4

Is there a way to preview a video transition before applying the effect in the timeline, similar to the feature in Elements 7? Alternatively, is there a site that demonstrates each of these effects so as to save time and avoid having to memorize them all?

I use butt-cuts, Dip-to-Black and Cross-Dissolves for 99% of my Transitions. There have been a very few others used over the years, but I must have a compelling aesthetic reason to do so.
Now, I do not do weddings, soccer camp videos, music videos or several other genre of Projects. Were I doing these, then I might be coerced into using a few more, but only if the client offered "hazard pay."
No, I do not want anybody really noticing any Transition. I want to convey things like a "change of place," or a "passage of time," but on a subliminal level. The most scathing criticism that I could receive would be a viewer asking how I did such-n-such Transition. That would indicate major failure on my part.
If you look at most feature films, you will see but a very few Transitions, outside of maybe the intro, or the trailer. Obviously, music videos are a major exception, but even concert features normally butt-cut from camera to camera.
That is also why I never even think about doing things like "Random Pan & Zooms." Each image is unique, and requires that I treat each one as such.
Some where, I have hundreds of Hollywood FX, that came with earlier programs. All it would take is just a batch file extension change, to use them in PrPro. However, I have seen no reason to even do that. If it is not an integral part of the story, I do not use it. Maybe that's just my days in cine, where there were but three ways to do it?
Good luck,

  • Problems with DV video & transitions in CS4

    In a nutshell:
When I am using DV video on the timeline and do a transition (like a dissolve), I get a black flash before and after the transition.  If I use analog video that I import through the AJA card, I don't have this problem.
The DV video in question is 24p, coming in from a Sony HDV cam via Firewire.  Could it be the 24p causing a problem?
(one other thing --- when I put a graphic on the line above, there is no flash once this is rendered on top)

    Three things to look into:
Is there a gap between your Clips? If so, you will need to place an instance of the Transition on the Head of one, and the tail of the other, as they cannot span a gap, even a 1-Frame gap.
Do you have adequate Handles on the Head and Tail of your Clips?
When you Render that Transition, do you still have the black flash?
Good luck, and welcome to the forum,

  • L have to have Quicktime loaded to import video to Photoshop CS4 but it doesn't work. Does anyone know why??

    Hello there
Can anyone tell me how to import video into Photoshop CS4 as l was told to download Quicktime 7.1 or later but this hasn
not worked. l have read that it is probably that l have not got the right codex but which one is it......If you have an idea or could point me in the right direction this would be really helpful...
    many thanks
    seannybro

Many Thanks for the reply, Maybe l didn't word it correctly as l've been searching for days now for a solution, sorry, but l have just found out while watching tutorials on a education program that you can actual edit each frame in a video in Photoshop by importing the video into it. In these tutorials they said you have to download Quicktime 7.1 or later in order for this to work and then you can go through every frame of your video and change it, draw on it, do mainly anything you what, basically what you can do on a photo you can do with a video. It works with one of my AVI,files but not on any of my others or on any of my MOV. files. l just get a white screen the video is there in the AVI but l can't get MOV. to import. In AVI format it shows no pictures but it is there in the time/animation dilation and l was wondering does anyone know if l need to upload a new codec for it to work or have to switch or activate something for it to work on quicktime......but l have found others with the same problem but there all say upload a new codec but which??
any help would be really appreciated
    Seannybro
(If your wondering how too try changing your workspace from ESSENTIALS to VIDEO the icon is in the right hand corner near the close down button in Photoshop and double click on the grey interface (a photo uploads) to get to upload your videos from files then you should be able to upload from there....Import in the file menu doesn't work...hope this helps you. If it works for you then l must be going wrong somewhere....enjoy:)

  • How to view the video transition ?

    Hi there,
I am new to Final Cut Express. I just bought it bcos the store has opening 10% discount offer.
I went to effects > transition tab & saw there are a list of video transition. I can only see how the transition looks like after I drag it into the video timeline & placed it between 2 still photos.
But how to I skim thru & see how each one looks like before I choose it ? When I click any of the transition, both the preview screens do not show the transition !!
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks

    I personally print a manual.
You should be able to print just the pages you require without printing the entire 1150 odd pages.
In Help>Final cut Express User Manual, open it up and go to Index, Click T and find Transition in the list.
There will be a load of sub-entries, click the page number of a likely sub-entry and the PDF opens to that exact page. I find this quicker than looking in a book, although like you a real pain to study. Give me a real book any day.
Chapter 35 pages 520 through 524 explains what transitions do in the PDF manual I use.

  • How to preview ENTIRE video (basic question but its not working)

    Hi
Ive been fiddling with this for over 2 hours and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to preview the entire video. All I can get are the clips. When I click the source tab it only allows me to select individual clips not the whole track. How on earth do I preview the entire video?
    Thank you!
And for bonus marks, is there a way to slim down the sides of the video (there are black bars in the native file) and re-render it? E.g. Change a video from 720x480 to 720x380 but not by shrinking the whole file, but rather trimming the sides (Sony Vegas can do this so Im wondering if Premiere can too)

You are most welcome, and glad that it helped.
Craig has addressed how to get another color. [It pays that he's in NZ, and is about 2 days ahead of me in the US... ]
Depending on the effect that you want, you might also consider doing an "abstract" background, rather than a single, flat Color Matte. The choice will depend on what you want to do, and probably also on your material. When faced with vertical images in a "SlideShow," I use this often, and will often use it for all images in a SlideShow. This ARTICLE goes into more detail, just in case you might want to do something similar.

  • How to apply audio and video transitions automatically when drop multiple clips to timeline?

If I remember OK, in previos versions of Premiere it was possible to Drag multiple Clips from project area to timeline, and apply automatically audio/video transitions.
It was possible to configure how many video frames will be overlapped to do a default transitions (and for audio, also).
Is it possible in Premiere CS6 to do the same thing ?  Leave me a link to documentation, or a hint, how to get this thing done.
I have searched over the documentation, but i have not found.
    Thanks for hints.

I believe the feature you're referring to is Automate to Sequence. In CS6, it was in the Project Menu; for those using CC, it is in the Clip Menu.

  • Video Transitions for Adobe Premiere Pro CS4

Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 contains/includes very few useful video transitions for my work. There were many very useful, sophicticated and great third party plugins for video transitions for earlier versions of Premiere (i.e. Premiere 6.5), but most of these no longer work with Premiere Pro CS4. Adobe kept changing the plugin architecture so that third party plugins for earlier versions of Premiere would stop working with newer versions of Premiere.
What third party plugins are available for Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 that will provide sophisticated, fancy and useful video transitions? What third party plugins are available for Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 that will provide sophisticated, fancy and useful video effects filters? Most third party plugins that I am aware of only work with Adobe After Effects CS4, but I would like to find those that will work with Adobe Premiere Pro CS4.
Unless there are some very good third party plugins available for Adobe Premier Pro CS4, I am about ready to uninstall CS4 and reinstall Premiere 6.5 and the third party plugins I had for it and work with those.
Thank you for any information you can provide!

    Richard,
    Welcome to the forum.
The term "useful" can mean different things to different people.
Here are some of the 3rd party Transition plug-ins, that will work (in their current versions) in CS4:
    Pixelan SpiceMaster
    ProDAD Adorage
    NewblueFX
HollywoodFX used to work, with a bit of file renaming, but I think that Pinnacle has dropped that line of Transitions
    Good luck,

  • How can I restore Deprecated video transitions

A number of video transitions, in particular 3D Motion transitions, have been eliminated in CC 2014.  How can I get them back?  There are some that I use regularly.   Another used wrote that simply "syncing" the older version of PP ("CC") to the Cloud, then opening and "syncing" PP CC 2014 would restore the missing transitions. I followed the instructions to the letter but the transitions are still not showing.   Is there some kind of workaround?  Otherwise I'm forced to remove CC 2014 and revert to CC.  That's fine for one or two projects, but is obviously not a working solution.

This place claims they can if yu send it to them:

I cannot do that with all of my video files just some of the video files are able to be previewed.
Some of the files show a thumb of the video and some just show the quicktime logo are other logos
I am running the latest Lion
    Thanks.

You need to investigate BLOB = Binary Large Objects.
Start with Google where you will find plenty of info to start with.
Next time, you'd better mentioned the OS and Oracle version (4 digits) that you are using.

  • When importing Abode premiere footage with video transitions they get wipped out :-(

Afternoon from York UK,  (USING LATEST VERSIONS OF ALL SOFTWARE)
Ok here's today's stress.... I build i video clip with Video transitions, dissolve dip to white to be specific. When i imported the project into After effects all transitions are lost :-( I'm so very confused.
To help here is a screen shot showing the transitions effects exist in the layers but on ram preview and export to mpeg no video transitions show. It is as if i added no transition effects between the clips!

    Thanks in advance,

    Thanks Rick,
But I'm such a noob at Ae i've little idea on how to go about "Dynamically linked AE..." I appreciate now Ae is a technical tool which is going to take time to master which is difficult when I had yesterday to send the completed video to the client. Big problems for me are getting generated when I try to import Pr with Ae. Case in point is my Ae created animation being so much bigger than my imported video clip creating this effect: http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc53/zymurgy_bucket/misfit-video-clip-langleys-glitch_z pseec728d8.jpg
Spent all day trying to fix this but no joy, I have today to fix this, wish me luck ;-)

  • Exporting video from PPro CS4 to Encore CS4 is jerky

    Hi Guys
I need help urgently as I have to finish my client's work today:
I used a HDD camcoder to record video & I downloaded to my PC via Bridge
The video is in MPEG format
I used the media encoder to convert from MPEG to AVI: microsoft avi, pal, 720 X 576, lower field first, 48Khz audio
I imported in PPro and edited: used fast color correction, dip to black video transition, edited audio using soundbooth
I then went to each video clip I edited and reversed field dominance (set to always deinterlace, then tried flicker removal)
Then I imported the sequence into Encore using adobe dynamic link, and then created a timeline
If I test the video in Encore or on TV, guess what? The video is crap - it's jerky
I have also tried to first export the video from PPro to an AVI file and then import into Encore as AVI but it's the same bad result
Please, I don't know what to try now. I tried converting using ulead video studio from MPEG to AVI, using DV-AVI settings: frame based, 720 X 576, 48KHz audio, type 2 compressor
The other thing is I don't know what the media encoder uses as a compressor (type 1 or 2) and how come there's no option of choosing DV-AVI. There's only microsoft AVI.
    Many thanks in advance guys
    Live Fantasy

Glad that you got it sorted.
The "Preview" in Encore is just that, an emulation. You method of Burning the DVD RW is the best method to check all aspects of an authored DVD. Besides some of the quality issues you noted, there are also some other "gottchas" in En Preview. One of the most notable is the "black flash," when using Button Transitions, or transitioning from a Play First to a Menu. The emulation is just not perfect. Also, depending on which navigational aids one uses, things can work differently, than with a remote on a set-top player and can trip one up when testing a navigational scheme.
I even find that testing on hardware is preferable to doing so on a software player, unless the delivery is exclusively to a computer and not to a set-top player.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Problem with sound, and problem with video transitions

For some reason my audio isnt locked with my video anymore so when I move a clip the audio doesnt follow does anyone know how to fix that?
Also, when I put in video transitions instead of just switching from the first clip to the second clip it flashes an image from other pieces of footage while transitioning and I need to figure out how to fix that too.
Anyone know how to fix these?
    thanks

Thanks i got the audio problem fixed.
When I open up final cut it says some of the media has been disconnected but it then says I can't reconnect it or something like that, I don't know if that effects the transitions. I split up a lot of footage and rearranged it and for one of the places where it flashes a clip it shows one of the pieces of footage that I had deleted because it had a glitch and the other places I noticed it it had random clips from throughout the project, like a flash of an interview that happens way later in the film. So it is random clips that are in the film and even clips that I deleted.

  • Preview video jagged in CS3 (after system upgrade)

My production company just upgraded our production machines:
    Intel Core i7 870 chips
    16 GB DDR3 ram
    GeForce GTX 465 graphics cards
    Windows 7 Pro 64-bit OS
... so these machines should have no problem running anything. We are still using CS 3 though, which is running in 32-bit, so it's not fully taking advantage of the processing power/RAM.
Anyway, upon loading a Premiere project I instantly noticed that the preview video (in both the source and program monitors) is now playing back quite jagged... like it's in "draft" mode or looks ridiculous interlaced. BTW, all the projects/footage we work with is in regular old DV NTSC 720/480 (0.9) 29.97fps. We have external NTSC preview monitors that take a feed from a DV deck that is connected to the computer via firewire, and the NTSC monitor video looks perfectly fine... it's just the preview video inside of Premiere. I went through all of the display options that I could think of: changed quality inbetween "high" and "automatic", optimized rendering for both "performance" and "memory", selected on and off "maximum bit depth" and "optimize stills" options, and selected all three different options in Playback Settings > Desktop Display Mode (the only difference here is that when "compatible" is selected, the still images look smooth and normal... but when you play the video the jagged look starts happening).
I also tried going into the Nvidia display settings to see if there were any options regarding video rendering or altering hardware acceleration or something... but nothing there helped the problem.
My only guess as to what the problem is, is that now I'm running CS3 in 32-bit on a 64-bit operating system with a different video card. All I know, is that the preview video never looked like this on my old machine (dual Xeon 3Ghz, 4GB DDR2 ram, Win XP 32-bit).
    Any ideas?

For starters, if things look good on a properly calibrated external CRT display, then don't worry too much about how they look inside Premiere.  The internal monitors are for viewing content only, not for judging quality.
Having said that, keep the Playback Quality on High.  Change the size from Fit (the default) to 100% and see if that helps.

  • Missing video transitions in Premiere CS6

    Greeting everyone,
It seems that I am missing some 3D motion transition effects in Premiere CS6. I only have Cube Spin and Flip Over, but I know (and have seen) more transitions on other people's installations. I can't seem to find anywhere to download them either. I assumed they came with base CS6, but I don't have them. Where can I download some more? Or how do I restore the ones that I should have?
