How to print from linux to Mac printer using cups - password?

I think that I have done the correct things to share my printer from my OS X 10.4 Mac mini (my MacBook is happy to print on the Mac mini printer), and my Ubuntu Linux computer seems to be ready to print using cups. Linux can see the printer on Mac mini, but when I try to send a print job the Mac refuses access. I assume the problem is that the Linux computer needs to send the Mac a password, but I don't know how to do that -- where in the sequence of information coming from the Linux computer the password should be, what format, how to get the Linux computer to send the info through lpadmin or the GUI. All that.
Can anyone help? Preferably with step-by-step instructions for the complete idiot. I have seen FAQs on printing, but there is no information about passwords. And most are focussed on smb rather than cups.

I use linux and print through the Mac - but I don't have the trouble you are describing.
There are 2 places to enable print sharing on Mac - have you done both of those?
What protocol are you using - the easiest for CUPS is IPP (port 631). I have an Ubuntu computer at home - describe exactly how you add the printer and I'll be able to follow through.

  • IPP Printing from Linux or Mac to Windows server

I have windows server 2003 R2 ent with ipp printing installed. All windows clients are ale to connect, install and print to a shared printer via ipp. When connecting via a linux or mac machine, I am not able to print. I am asked for the creditionals to print but it does nothing.
The ipp server is set to accept authentication via Intergrated Windows Authentication. I had read this is compatible with firefox and other browsers.
Is there any particular settings I am missing on this one?
The goal is to require only domain users access to the printers.

    Hi,
    Thank you for posting here.
Since we can print from Windows clients properly, it indicates Windows Printing Server is working OK. Base on my research, we may have to setup a CUPS server so that Linux client communicate with CUPS Server and CUPS communicate with Windows Printer Server using IPP. For your reference:

  • Pictures that i print from my I-Mac print too Big?

When I go to I-Photo and attempt to print to my HP-7210 printer it prints the photos bigger than the paper.  In other words you some of the picture in the original picture on the monitor.  Normally loosing a small amount of the print is not a problem but I am printing screen captures from my I phone and part of the print I would like to have is lost because the printed picture is probably 9x11-1/2 and the text outside of the border is important.
Can you tell me how to print i-phone prints so the picture is all on the paper.

    Hello,
Different Printers will have different choices, some even on the printer itself where you put the paper, but in iPhoto look for settings like this when the Print Dialog opens...
Or under iPhoto's File>Page Setup menu item...

How can I print to my HP OfficeJet 6500 Wireless Printer from my iPhone 4S which used to work (on prior iPhones) before AirPrint printers were even available? (running Mac Lion OS, all software and HP sw updates are all performed)
I don't get it, I read one post about why would we have to buy an AirPrint Printer when we have used the "print to a wifi printer" just fine in the past?  Yes I feel that's exactly what's happening to me now too. I want to print from my iPhone and iPad to my WiFi Printer which is also now connected to my Airport Express WiFi network just fine. No problems.

Very glad you added that bit of information because I see different problems similar to this.  I want to share with them what you did and hopefully you not only fixed your specific problem but you can lend some more advice to others with problems like this. Thanks!
Don't forgot to say thanks by giving "Kudos" if I helped solve your problem.

  • How can page margins be changed when printing from Firefox for Mac OS X? (This is easy to do on the Windows version.)

Page margins can be adjusted from the page setup menu in the Windows version of Firefox, but there does not appear to be an equivalent menu in the Mac version.

    Hi onlyhuman2-
I'm not familiar with the printing options using Windows. I've found this article on editing print options for a Mac: [[Printing a web page]]
That shows you how to shrink the page, and to edit page headers and footers. I'm hoping that covers the margins you were hoping to change.
    Good luck!

Rather than use SMB to connect from Lion to the Windows XP printer share, a better method is to enable Print Services for UNIX on Windows XP and then use LPD on the Mac to print via the Windows share.
To install Print Services for UNIX on Windows XP:
Log on to the Windows server with an administrative-level account.
Start the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.
    Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
Click Other Network File and Print Services, and then click Details.
Click to select the Print Services for UNIX check box, and then click OK.
Follow the instructions on the screen to finish the installation
If you haven't done so already, share the printer on Windows XP and make the name one word - no spaces or special characters
With the print services enabled you can then create the printer queue on Lion.
Open Print & Scan and click + to add a printer
Select the IP icon and set the protocol to Line Printer Daemon - LPD
For the Address, enter the IP address of the Windows XP computer
For the Queue name, enter the share name set for the printer in Windows XP
Name and Location are free text so you can set this to something meaningful
For the Print Using menu, select the supporting printer driver. Note that like connections via SMB, the vendors driver for Lion in some cases cannot be used and an alternate like those offered by the Gutenprint suite must be used.
Click the OK button to complete the queue creation.
Now you are ready to test the new print queue.

  • I am trying to print from iphoto to my printer.  When I click print on under File tab it says that a theme cannot be found and that a theme needs to be intalled?  Why is this window popping up and how I install a "theme" on iphoto?

I am trying to print from iphoto to my printer.  When I click print on under File tab it says that a theme cannot be found and that a theme needs to be intalled?  Why is this window popping up and how I install a "theme" on iphoto?

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • How do I print from my I Pad 2 using Airport Express

How do I print from my I pad 2 using airport express.

At this time you can't, not if you mean a printer connected via USB to the Airport unless there's been an app or workaround released that I haven't seen, or unless the printer is one of the few wireless printers that support AirPrint or for which the manufacturer has released their own app. At this time only HP has come out with printers that support AirPrint, which allows an iOS device to natively print directly to a wireless printer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356
It's possible other printer manufacturers may provide updates to their printers to make them AirPrint capable. It's also possible that eventually Apple will support printers connected to a computer or Time Capsule. HP also has an app that allows printing to some of their other wireless printers, as if memory serves does Brother.
If you don't have an HP printer or a another printer with an app available, then for now, you would have to connect the printer to your computer, then search the web for something like "airprint Windows hack" and you'll find instructions on enabling printing. If you have a Mac, try Printopia.
    Regards.

  • I'm running Adobe 9 pro on snow leopard and when I save or print from word for mac 14 the bottom gets cuts off

I'm running Adobe 9 pro on snow leopard and when I save or print from word for mac 14 the bottom gets cuts off. Can someone help?

Ah! You're creating a PDF out of Word through Acrobat. The cutoff is most likely being affected by the printer chosen.
When you call up the print dialogue in Word, check to see what printer is being used. If it's a typical inkjet printer, Acrobat is using the print margins of that printer as the cutoff area. Since most such printers can't print to the last inch and half or so of the paper, that's where it would be cut off.
Near the bottom, under the preview of the document, click on the Page Setup button. It doesn't really matter which printer you select here. Under Paper Size, choose Manage Custom Sizes. Under the Non-Printable Area heading, choose the same printer and set the paper size you're using.
Note that the unprintable margins for that printer will be filled in automatically. That's what's being cut off. Click the + button to create a modified version. The default will be "Untitled". Give it a new name if you want. Then set all of the margins to zero. Click OK. Now you'll have that as a choice under Paper Size. Doesn't matter that the actual printer can't use this setting since you're going to a PDF. Click OK to get back to the main Word print dialogue.
Now choose Save as Adobe PDF. It should give you an exact duplicate of what's on screen in Word since as far as Acrobat is concerned, your "printer" has no unprintable margins.

try print from Microsoft Word XP: printer (HP Officejet 4500 G510n-z) lops off top of random lines

CD didn't work. Download software, didn't work when it came to plugging into usb port, don't even get a BACK button, nothing. Printer not recognized by laptop. Did all the solutions/uninstall/install etc. Printer is working though, prints out the exact same thing each time I press the green button on the printer, but is not connected to laptop. So it's not the printer, it works.
